Our favorite mess-of-a-life, sometimes contract killer, dynamic duo is back in the third installment of Finlay Donovan and y'all I could not put this down! These stories are so much fun, so ridiculous, and so epically binge-able.
We open on the most hilarious scene of Finlay trying to hostage negotiate her potty-training two-year-old out of the stall being used by another man at the local Walmart (?), and if that didn't perfectly set the stage for the hilarity that follows. Our team of novice contract killers Vero and Finlay team up once again as they work to discover who EasyClean is and get the Russian mob off their backs, all while trying to pay off a loan shark from Atlantic City. These two sure can get themselves in a tangle! And because EasyClean is suspected to be a dirty cop, the our leading ladies head to cop camp hosted by none other than Finlay's beau Nick. During their week they take classes in how to train to be a cop, get a little "extra credit time" in with the head teach, evade people sent to kill them, and have to get to the bottom of who is trying to take them down.
The ending was so satisfying and we're set up for book four which I will be waiting on pins and needles for! I'm left with more questions - Steven is once again on the chopping block of being super sus - and I can't wait to see how Vero and Finlay continue to keep their names clean in the face of everything that is taking place. While you have to suspend reality a bit while reading (because these stories are by NO MEANS grounded in reality), they're just so damn funny and enjoyable! You're rooting for these two to figure their shit out and keep their secrets. Highly recommend! The stories and characters just keep getting better. I cannot wait for the next installment!.
Thank you to NetGalley, Elle Cosimano, St. Martin's Press and Minotaur Books for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Show me a better duo than Finlay and Vero? I'll wait!
Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun is the 3rd book in the series (#1 Finlay Donovan is Killing It, #2 Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead). When I read book one, I was instantly hooked and it became my favorite read ever! Since then, I've been (im)patiently waiting for the next one in the series!
Book number 3 picked up right where book 2 left off and then all pandemonium ensues. In this book, Finlay and Vero attend a citizen's police academy that Nick is heading up.... so you can just imagine the hilarity and trouble that happens!
Buckle up though, because this is a fast-paced and wild ride with lots of action and twist and new characters! I think I have a little bit of whiplash from all the action-packed fun!
If I had to describe this series in one word, it was simply be FUN. These books are the perfect read to bust a reading slump or just make you smile. I'm so excited to see these played out on screen and cannot wait for the TV series!
Also, Elle has already confirmed on her Instagram that book #4 is in the works, so we have more shenanigans in our future!
Thank you so much to Minotaur Books for the chance to read and review this book prior to release. It will be available for purchase on January 31, 2023.
Finlay and Vero are back!!!! I honestly have the best time reading these books by Elle Cosimano. Just when I think I know what’s going to happen, the author throws in a plot twist and it takes me by surprise.
I love the writing style, it’s truly hilarious. I have cackled reading every book thus far. I thought the police academy plot line was a really interesting way to get Finlay and Vero close to the all the cops. I don’t know if it was as exciting as the first two but it was still really good.
FINALLY we get some more action with Nick but man oh man this is a slow burn. As an avid romance reader I think I’m pushing too heavily for the relationship aspect of the story but I just can’t help it… I mean we ALL want Nick and Finlay to be together desperately.
I thought there was going to be a lot of questions answered in this one but honestly it just left me with even more questions, which is exciting as a set up for the next book!
I will always recommend this series. I’m not a mystery lover but the humor and heart in these books is unmatched. Finlay and Vero 5ever!
Thank you NetGalley and Minotaur Books for an advanced e-ARC in exchanged for an honest review. I will post this review on goodreads and instagram on the pub date.
I am such a huge fan of this series and was excited to get an early read of the third installment. However, this book just was ok and did not feel like there was a whole lot going on. The dynamic duo of Finlay and her babysitter Vero are back and determined to find EasyClean the assassin hired to kill Finlay's ex-husband. This third installment just felt flat. This time Finlay and Vero attend a week long citizen policy academy training as they suspect a cop gone bad is EasyClean. All the characters from the first two books are back and Cosimano does a good job of catching you up on previous story lines and characters if it has been awhile from reading the prior two novels. I just didn't enjoy the shenanigans of Finlay and Vero as much this go around and just felt drawn out storyline from the previous books and not much more excitement. Maybe I am not a series book follower but I think there needs to be so major action in the next book or I doubt I will continue to read. Book is fast and easy read with some suspense and mystery as well as added romance and sexual tension between Finlay and her adoring men including Nick, Steven, and the bartender!
Thank you net galley and St. Martin's Press for an ACR in exchange for my honest review and opinion.
How can one mommy, crime writer get into so much trouble? Finlay and her close buddy and crime partner Vero seem to set sparks off wherever they go.
These two swap double entendres, smart and snappy dialogue, and threads that multiply as the plot frays. Finlay has an ex, two little ones, and an editor that won’t leave her alone to work.
In Book 3, the duo are busy trying to identify “EasyClean,” a contract killer working jobs through one of the Russian mob’s website forums and possibly working within the same department as romantic link Detective Nick. Nick makes it easy to infiltrate his department when he heads up the citizens police academy.
I really like the support characters. The writer has managed a scatter-shot of genres, combining snarky comments with humorous suspense(?) or mystery with a crime thriller. The brand of humor has created a staccato-like pattern of hit and retreat, advancing the storyline carefully in well-paced choreography that barrels into a conclusion pocked with cliffhangers.
I enjoyed this tale as much as the first two in the series I listened to in audiobook format. While it would help to read the first two in the series, Book 3 might be read as a standalone and will whet your appetite for the first two. 4.5 stars
Having thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the series, I was all set to love this one as well. Unfortunately, it is my least favorite. The storyline is thin, there are lots of characters, and it just didn't keep me interested in the story. Although the story picks up a bit at the end, it just dragged too much for my liking. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy.
This series is a welcome respite from some of the more series thrillers/mysteries I read.
Finlay and Vero continue to make me laugh out loud as they unashamedly unleash their sarcastic, comical selves into the epicenter of danger and chaos. They somehow mange to get themselves into more trouble while actively trying to get away from danger.
Both of our heroines have some tension happening in the relationship department which generally results in miscommunication and laughter. I just hope Finlay doesn't fall for Steve and his oh too-late realization that he made a huge mistake.
Cosimano does a good job with the twist at the end-which honestly made me want to slap my forehead for not considering this character earlier myself. So,slight surprise.
Already looking forward to the fourth installment!
Wow! I was so delighted to receive an ARC of Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun - I have been a fan of Elle Cosimano's series since the first novel and was absolutely delighted by her latest, coming to a bookstore near you in January 2023. I am not a mom, but any reader can admire Finlay's determination and scrappiness in the face of seemingly impossible situations (be it dealing with contract killers or extracting a toddler from a bathroom stall). The first novel in the series is still my favorite, but I am a fan of Ms. Cosimano and Ms. Donovan and absolutely enjoyed "Jumps the Gun". Many thanks to Minotaur, one of my favorite publishers, for the advanced copy of the latest entry in the Finlay Donovan series in exchange for my honest review!
I laughed, I shouted, I had no idea this was not the end of the line for Finlay...I absolutely ate this book up.
Fin and Vero's shenanigans continue in a unique setting. Under the guise of attending a citizen's police academy for book research, Fin and Vero get to interview and mingle with the local cops, hoping to find out the information they need to get the Russian mob off Fin's back. All the while, Nick is nearby being all sexy and whatnot, which is perfect fodder for Fin's next book (at least according to Vero).
This one had it all: romance, suspense, action, thrills, mystery, toddler shenanigans, crime scenes, an absolutely obnoxious ex-husband (GO JUMP IN A HOLE, STEPHEN). You name it, it's there.
I loved the slow burn angst between Fin and Nick. That mess was palpable and I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what they would do. And the mock trial scene? I was laughing out loud in one second and screaming, "Nooooooooo!" in the next. Such a great scene.
I loved the new characters we met and explored in this volume, and I hope we get to see much more of them in the future. So many things are coming to a head for these characters, and I hope the momentum continues to build. Bring on book 4!
Another fun adventure in the Finlay Donovan saga! Finlay is a single mom, who mistakenly got involved with a Russian mafia boss. In this book she is trying to figure out who the cop informant contract killer is before she gets killed. Add into the mix a hot cop love interest, and her sidekick nanny, and you have a whole lot of fun. Who knew murder could be so funny? The Finlay Donovan series is a fresh addition to the cozy mystery whodunit books, with romance and humor too. I do recommend re-reading the first book, as it was a little hard to remember the original storyline. But overall a fun book to read.
I am a stan of Finlay Donovan. However, I feel like her story is stretching out a bit too much. Give her a different mob boss to deal with. Make her murder someone else, or put her in jail or something. She needs some spice in her life, and she is not going to get it by being chased by the same mob boss for the next four books. That being said, I really enjoyed the sleep away cop camp of this. It was an original idea that I really vibed with. Just feels like there are too many mobsters and their henchmen to keep track of.
Follow Finlay and Vero on another hilarious adventure. This time they find themselves hiding out at a citizen's police camp searching for easy clean. The antics will keep you laughing and the relationship between Nick and Finlay will keep you guessing. All the additional questions you now have will hopefully be answered in book 4! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this one, but it did take some time for me to get into it.
I read where someone called this more like a side quest novel than part of the overall story and I have to agree with that. Doesn’t make it bad though!
I am definitely desperate for the next book as this one totally ended on a cliffhanger #savejavi
Another action packed installment in the Finlay Donovan series. I have read the first 2 books and still had a little trouble keeping up with everything in Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun. This one did not quite resonate with me like the other books in the series did. But, that being said, I still enjoyed it and thought it was a good read. It just felt a little more forced than the first 2 books in the series.
I would like to thank Netgalley , the author and the publishers for an ARC of the book in exchange for my opinion.
I was so excited to get the arc for this one! Loved the first two books in this series. Finlay and Vero have such a fun connection and they always make me laugh. It pains me to say it though, I didn’t love this one as much as the other two…I can’t put my finger on it. Maybe because it was a little too far fetched for me? I couldn’t connect with the characters this time around 😥
Thanks to St.Martin’s Press, Minotaur Books and Netgalley for an advanced ecopy in exchange for an honest review.
Publish Date: January 31, 2023
Fast paced, funny, good mystery. I love Finley and her family. The author does a great job of including her children without making her careless. . I do think it’s time to move on to a new case.
I've read all the books in the Finlay Donovan series and they've all been fun and compelling, good reads that are hard to put down. However, this one felt slightly convoluted and like more of a stretch in terms of how things worked out. It wasn't predictable in the sense that I knew what would happen, but more in the sense that you knew when something dramatic would happen or when something was too good to be true. At a certain point in a series, it's often hard to keep things going at the same level, and perhaps this book was that point? I will probably read the next one as I like to see what happens to the different characters, but I hope it will be less of a stretch.
Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun is a highly anticipated third novel in the series, I had recently finished the second novel and was thrilled to get my hands on this one to continue to follow Finlay's journey. In this book Finlay and Vero are trying to find the identity of Easy Clean, a contract killer that was getting their hits using one of Felik's websites disguised as a hidden women's forum. Felik's is one of the most dangerous mob bosses out there and Finlay and Vero have found themselves entangled in his chaos. Given a task to find out who this Easy Clean is the two come together to look to see if there is a corrupt member of the police force that it behind this identity. The two find themselves in a civilian police training camp that acts as a sleep away camp where regular citizens can get trained to do what police officers do. During their time there they try to talk to various police force to rule them out and find out who this contract killer is. Amongst it all Finlay has to revise her script for her upcoming book and add more spice to it to attract readers. With lack of action in her love life she finds herself at a stand still. That is until....NIck, attractive do good police officer, comes back into her life and ready to leave an impression on her.
This book includes so much action and I really found myself hooked at 70% of the book, They introduce new characters that play a large role and bring back characters from past books that has the reader surprised. This book is very minimal spice and is more focused on the action and the comedy of Finlay and Vero as they continue to find themselves in unfortunate situations.
I give this book a 4/5 stars and recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries and comedy, I'm excited to see if a fourth book comes out in this series since there was a cliffhanger at the end that could lead to one.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC!
I really, really love this series and will continue to read anything this author writes. However, I had a hard time with the slow pace of this book. I didn’t really get into it until close to the end, which closes on a cliffhanger. That said, it’s still a great series with lovable (if maddening) characters, and I will keep on reading them. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
Finlay Donovan is at it again. This time, Finlay owes the Russian mob. How will she and Vero manage to escape this debacle? With humor and suspense intertwined, this book will certainly keep you entertained. I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you to NetGalley for this advanced copy.
