Let me start out by expressing my LOVE for Kelley Armstrong. The Rockton series has been my favorite since I have started it. I was so excited when I found out I was approved for this ARC. The book itself did not disappoint. I have fell in the love the characters since page one and my love has only continued to grow. The different mysteries in each book never fail and they keep me wanting more. I am sad that the series is ending, but I am looking forward to what spin offs are to come!
If you haven't read the Rockton series by Kelley Armstrong RUN and do that so you can start this amazing spin-off series!
***Some Spoilers for the Rockton series ahead so be aware***
Rockton was a town hidden deep in the Yukon where desperate people can find refuge or hide from things that may be plaguing them in the "real world". When Casey a police detective agrees to go here so her best friend can escape an abusive boyfriend she soon realizes this secluded town has way more secrets and dangers than she could have ever imagined.
In Murder at Haven's Rock we join Eric and Casey back in the Yukon with another mystery to solve. Once they left Rockton to create their new haven they thought they have left behind all the drama and murders that seemed to plague Rockton but even before Haven's Rock is officially complete Eric and Casey are called in to investigate the disappearance of two of the workers from the camp. This was not the way they wanted to start off in their new refuge.
I genuinely love anything by Kelly Armstrong but her Rockton series is one of my favorites so I was so excited to hear that she wrote a spin-off. There is always great banter, an interesting plot, and she keeps you guessing throughout the whole book. Casey and Dalton have a very entertaining grumpy/sunshine relationship, and there are so many other characters that you will fall in love with. I can't wait to see what other things are to come for Haven's Rock!!
I have read the Rockton series and loved it...when I heard Kelley Armstrong was doing a spinoff to it I was excited! This book did not disappoint!
They are building a new secret town off the grid and of course there is a murder mystery involved. Many old and new characters popped up in the new series. I am looking forward to see how this new series develops!
Murder at Haven's Rock is a strong first book in a new series growing out of the previous Rockton novels with its most interesting characters. It’s an intriguing disappearance/murder mystery set in the Yukon wilderness where Casey and Dalton are building a new community to take the place of Rockton. The pace is nonstop, all kinds of new developments take place, and it ends with answers to the questions raised and yet is open for another book—which will hopefully come soon.
So happy to see Casey and Eric back! Having fairly recently discovered the Rockton series and read several of the books, this was great to see that their story continues. Thanks to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for the chance to preview an ARC.
I really enjoyed this book, love the quirky characters and the very unique premise that the author has created. The book and action flow very well and it feels like Rockton continues but without the bad administration. Love that Casey and Eric are in charge now ! I especially liked the character April - Casey's autistic physician sister. The author really has a knack for making characters (including animals) come alive.
The plot was intriguing with plenty of unexpected twists!.
Overall a great start to a sort of new series. Can't wait to keep reading these books!.
Expected publication date 2/21/2023.
Casey and Dalton from the Rockton series by Kelley Armstrong set out to build a new town in the depths of the Alaskan wilderness in Murder at Haven's Rock. Amelie has sent a construction crew to the site of Haven's Rock. There are rules not to go into the woods alone and always stay on the trail. The workers start to go missing. Casey and Dalton are called in early, before construction is finished to investigate and find the wandering construction workers. With bodies turning up, strangers presiding in the forest and danger all around, Casey decides to call in other citizens from Rockton to help with the situation. Can they find out what is happening in this part of the uninhabited region they had hoped to call home?
This story felt like coming home. I am glad to have a "spin off" from the original Rockton series. Those of you that have not read that series this can be read as a stand-alone book. Having some of the original characters as well as some new, gave a familiar feel to the start of this new series. The story introduces us to the start of a new town held in the depths of Alaska where people can go to escape and conceal their identities or past experiences. I felt like this story had a lot of the same feel as the original series and I am hoping as we get set in this new environment that a new story line will start to emerge. As some other readers mentioned this story is much like the original series and hasn't found a distinction between the two worlds yet.
Thank you to Net Galley, St. Martin's Press and Minotaur Books for sending me an ARC copy for an honest review.
Thank you Netgalley and Minotaur Books for the chance to read an ARC of Murder at Haven's Rock by Kelley Armstrong. This is the first book in the new series Haven's Rock which continues with characters from the Rockton series. I was not ready to see the end of Casey and Eric, and this book did not disappoint. The plot kept me guessing and I couldn't put the book down! If you haven't read Rockton, do not worry, you will not be lost reading Murder at Haven's Rock. With new people introduced, Haven's Rock is sure to bring a different vibe to the new mystery town. However, if you are like me (and have to start at the beginning), reading the Rockton series will give you more of the background of the returning characters. I love the chemistry between Casey and Eric, and the developing relationship between Casey and her sister April as Casey works on understanding April's form of autism. I am looking forward to reading the next book as Haven's Rock becomes a working town for those who need to disappear, with the introduction of the new citizens (and who is joining Casey and Eric from Rockton).
I was hooked from the beginning. Very fast paced and quick read! I LOVED Casey!
I was suspicious of absolutely everyone. So glad this is only the beginning of a series.
A great who-dun-it that kept me guessing until the end.
Surprisingly, this is the first Kelly Armstrong book I’ve read. I don’t know why, as I’ve known about her books for years and was a fan of the TV show Bitten which was an adaption from her book, but there you have it. It won’t be the last one I read, that’s for sure.
Ms. Armstrong did a great job laying out the clues and peppering the story with red herrings to keep me from zeroing in right away on the murderer. Oh sure, I suspected that person, but I wasn’t sure, and that’s all that mattered.
I really liked Dalton and Casey, their easy-going relationship, utter trust, and the chemistry between the two. I’ll definitely have to go back and read the Rockton series so I can see these two from the start. Actually, if you haven’t read that series, if might be helpful to read it first. I did feel a bit lost a few times with references to Rockton and what went wrong. But you don’t have to read it. Yolanda was also a great character. Strong. Secretive. Stubborn. Gunnar gave the story some run color and a little levity, which I always appreciate.
Great setting, characters, storyline, and setup for a new series. Looking forward to what comes next.
Really good! I liked all the characters and the pace of the book. I’d definitely read more with these people in this town
Thanks to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.
The Haven's Rock series is a spinoff/continuation of the author's Rockton series. While this is the first book by Kelley Armstrong that I have read, Murder at Haven's Rock can be read as a standalone.
The area, in the Yukon, is being developed as a sanctuary town where people can get a second chance at life. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton met in the original town of Rockton. They are the driving forces behind this new venture. The construction crew has only one ironclad rule - "Stay out of the forest." Unfortunately, not everyone obeys and a bodies are discovered in the woods. Duncan and Dalton are called in early to solve the mystery.
I enjoyed this book and look forward to future episodes.
As the story gets twisty, you will need to get out the murder board and string to keep all the players straight.
As the story gets twisty, you are going to need to get out the murder board and string to keep all the players straight.
Unless I forgot something from the end of the Rockton series, I am still not sure why this is a sequel as compared to adding another book to the Rockton series. If Kelley Armstrong was only trying to clean house and attempt a fresh start to separate Haven’s Rock from the Rockton management, I would think there would be easier ways of doing it.
The previous series is rehashed throughout and a couple of old characters are mentioned while others have already returned. The flow and humor are there, which is what lovers of Rockton will enjoy. Unfortunately, there are many slow spots where Casey and Eric rehash, ad nauseum, what has happened so far instead of leaving it up to the reader to keep score and the players lined up.
Kelley Armstrong is my kind of author so of course; I will be awaiting each upcoming book in this new series.
Armstrong spins off her favorite Rockton characters into a new direction, as Casey and her friends set up their own haven for the threatened (and themselves) in the deepest reaches of the Yukon wilderness. Only given all the people (and bodies) they keep running into, it seems almost like Grand Central Station, only with more moose. And wolves. And mysterious people with mysterious motives. Great fun, and I'm glad to see the series still going!
This is a really enjoyable spin-off from the author's Rockton series. If you like that series, this is a perfect continuation.
I was sad to say goodbye to my favorite characters in the Rockton series. Then, I learned that it was not goodbye and they would be coming back. Saying I was excited, is an understatement. Murder at Heaven's Rock is the perfect spin-off to Rockton. I am so happy to have my favorite characters back. This book was everything I love about Casey and Eric. The plot is never what it seems to be. Every time I think I figured out who might been the bad guy, I am always pleasantly wrong. I cannot wait to see what adventures are ahead for Casey and Eric.
Kelley Armstrong’s wrote her newest series’ first book, Murder at Haven’s Rock as a little stash of dynamite on the bookshelf. It exploded with intrigue and almost like world-building that we find in a fantasy genre book.
In Murder at Haven’s Rock, we catch up again with Casey and Eric after they have left Rockton to set up their latest attempt at a sanctuary city in the Yukon.
Rather in the same vein as a classic who-done-it, we meet everyone at the encampment after not one, but two crew-members go missing. Everyone is a suspect, initially, which makes it more fun to try to deduce the ending.
This is a fun mystery, filled with tons of intrigue and lots of revelations that help to set the stage for life at Haven’s Rock for all who seek its shelter. I can’t wait to see what’s next in this series!
Thank you to NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for the ARC of this fun mystery novel!
I enjoyed this newest installment of the Casey and Dalton story immensely. The writing was crisp, the voice was perfect, and the story kept me guessing and looking over my shoulder until the very end. It was a bloody impressive piece of writing.
Thanks, Net Galley, for the ARC!
Murder at Haven's Rock by Kelly Armstrong (book review).
While I have read Kelly Armstrong's writing and enjoyed it, this was my first time reading the Rockton series with Casey and Eric as the main characters. According to my understanding, this is the first spinoff from the original series. As a whole, I enjoyed Murder at Haven's Rock and it kept my attention until the very end. The plot is twisty and keeps you guessing. It will be interesting to learn more about Casey and Eric's adventures and the future of Haven's Rock.

This new series spins off from the popular Rockton Series. Casey and Dalton are ready to start their new lives in a newly contracted town, but disappearances and murder among the construction crew means they need to investigate, and fast if they are to get the new town built in time. I really liked the Rockton series and I'm glad it is continuing in this way. This was a great fast paced mystery and setting it in the Canadian wilderness is very original.
This is the first in a spin-off of the Rockton series (which I haven’t read but now would like to).
Set in the Yukon wilderness, Detective Casey Duncan and her husband Sheriff Eric Dalton have instigated the construction of a small town (Haven’s Rock) which will provide safe haven for those in need. As it nears completion, they are called in early to investigate the disappearance of two of the construction crew. Are the disappearances related? Are they from within the site or from outside?
I enjoyed this, and while yes, I do believe I would have benefited from reading the prior series first, I was able to piece together what I needed to. The plot is a bit convoluted and far-fetched, but there was some tension involved, and I found the characters very likable. Would definitely continue on, both forward and back.
My thanks to the author, NetGalley and Minotaur Books for providing the free early arc of Murder at Haven’s Rock for review. The opinions are strictly my own.
