Fans of Kelley Armstrong’s Rockton series have a treat in store for them. Murder at Haven’s Rock is the first in a new series, essentially a spinoff/continuation of the Rockton series. You will find several of the old “crew” back in this book: Casey and Eric of course, plus April and Anders, with hints of a few others coming back too. Some new intriguing characters, especially Yolanda, Kendra and Gunnar, look like they may be continuing in further Haven’s Rock stories, with any luck.
If you’ve read the Rockton series, you will feel right at home as Casey and Eric attempt to build a new town in the Yukon wilderness. If you haven’t read any of the Rockton books, Armstrong has included some background information, but it’s hard for me to know how someone new to this “world” will feel, whether they will feel lost or not. I think you’ll be okay but obviously you won’t have all the backstory and information that a Rockton reader will have.
The mystery here is the disappearance of two members of the crew who are building the new town: Penny, the architect, and Bruno, the engineer. Casey and Eric are called in to investigate and locate them. The mystery gets more complex as the story unfolds and it definitely kept me guessing and reassessing my guesses as I read the book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for the opportunity to read an advance readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I am so glad Armstrong is continuing Casey and Dalton’s adventures. It is exciting to be able to continue reading about our favorite characters who are hiding out, We also get to meet new characters and will enjoy seeing how they will fit in. Haven’s Rock community isn’t even finished and already there are problems that Casey and Dalton need to fix.
Get out your murder board, Kelly Armstrong is taking us on a ride through the Yukon wilderness to find a killer. “Murder at Havens Rock”, the spinoff of the Rockton series, will throw you into the unforgiving rough country where you will meet unlikely characters who all have secrets. With so many secrets, everyone is suspect. When 2 people go missing while building the hidden town of Havens Rock, Casey and her husband Sherriff Dalton set off to find them, but stumble upon a body instead. Now time is of the essence as they try to find who’s missing..and who left a body hidden in the woods. In their struggle to untangle the threads that wrap up this mystery, they only find more loose ends and more players in the game. Together they need to figure out who to trust, and who is pulling the strings.
Armstrong will pull you along as you flip the pages faster than you can read to get to the bottom of this mystery, only to leave you with a much bigger problem to solve at the end. “Murder at Havens Rock” will leave you dangling on the cliffs edge wondering when someone will be there to pull you up.
Excellent book for the Rockton spin off series. The characters are all so interesting including the main 2 Casey and Eric. If you have not followed the Rockton series you will still enjoy this new series and totally understand what is going on. I believe this would make a terrific series on TV. Its an awesome read and I can't wait for the next Havens Rock book. 5 Gold Stars all the way
What a joy to dive back into the the world of Rockton, even though it was actually Haven's Rock (i.e. Rockton 2.0). I loved reuniting with Casey, Eric, Will, and April. There were also brief cameos from Phil & Isabel, and a handful of new characters that look like they will be regulars in this new series.
The biggest downside of this book is the fact that it won't be published for several months, which means that any future installments in the series are even farther off than that. Given that, I may re-read it before the pub date, or see if NetGalley has the audio ARC available at some point.
Thank you Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for providing an ARC of this book, this review is completely mine.
Murder At Haven's Rock is a spin off of Kelley Armstrong's other series, Rockton. I recommend reading the other series first before this one because it will give you a more complete backstory of each character involved, and it's a great series overall. It could be read as a standalone however, I don't recommend it. I loved all of the characters from the Rockton series and I am very happy that this spinoff continues to be told by Casey. If Casey and Dalton weren't in this new spinoff, I probably would've revolted.
It follows the same narrative where there is either a murder or missing persons and Casey and Dalton (can't forget Storm) are brought in to solve it. Which I absolutely love. I am a big fan of Kelley Armstrong and her mysteries never disappoint, I'm always trying to guess what happens next and sometimes I get it right, but most of the time I'm completely off base which is nice that she's not predictable. I loved the freshness of the narrative with the new people we're introduced too. I can't wait to see what happens from here!
Another great book by Kelley Armstrong, loved finding out what’s been happening with the main characters since they left Rockton. Really enjoyed all the details about the new town and it’s characteristics. The mystery of the killer really kept me guessing until the end and I was pretty surprised with who it turned out to be. Would have loved to see some more intimacy scenes between Casey & Eric but hopefully in the next book. . Can’t wait to read the next one in the series.
Absolutely love this series, so glad that she is continuing it, the characters are excellent and the writing is superb. The story really holds my interest.. and the idea in general is so interesting to me, it is very realistic, can't wait for the next book, they can't come soon enough. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this Arc in exchange for an honest review
Oh man, I loved this book! I love her writing so much, and I was so excited for this spin off, they're finally out from under the thumb of the council, they're building their own safe haven. Of course, things get messy with missing crew members, and finding a body!
Between the fact that they're in a new location, and their new town isn't set up yet, let alone populated by their usuals, this is a new experience investigating. Things quickly become more and more complicated, dealing with the secrets people are carrying, and it was another intriguing mystery.
Between exploring their new town and dealing with the dead bodies, there's a lot going on. We learned some interesting things, that I'll be interested to see play out, for these characters who are sticking around. I'm just so glad that we got this spin off!
That ending? That is totally setting up a possible threat, and it's definitely going to be something to watch out for in the future of this series! I can't wait to see what's going to happen there, because there's so much room for something to go wrong!
I do have one question, and that's about Eric's brother, and Tyrone Cypher. Is their new location somewhere that they can get to? I mean, I know Tyrone managed to get to Hawaii and all, but that's wilderness to civilization, not wilderness to wilderness.
This was another great read, and I can't wait to see where the series goes from here!
With the construction not even finished for Haven's Rock, the town that's replacing the dismantled Rockton, Casey and Dalton are called in when two of the workers go missing. Of course there's a body and the hunt for the killer is on.
I was happy that Armstrong decided to continue on with the Rockton crew, it looks like most of our favorite townies will be here eventually. The environment is a little different and so are the neighbors, but Casey and Dalton in action is just as good as always. I enjoyed this and am looking forward to the next.

Casey and Dalton, you can move your town, but it seems the troubles will follow you! Thank you to the author, NetGalley and the publisher for the Advance copy of Havens Rock. Status quo book in a series I will always read.
I loved this book. It kept me guessing right up to the very end. I enjoy when an author advances the plot and further develops the characters in a series and this new spinoff of the Rockton series doesn't disappoint. I can't wait for the next book as this one definitely leaves the reader wondering what will happen next in Haven's Rock.
I'm so happy to have received an early ARC to read for this book! I'm such a fan of both Casey and Dalton (not to mention Anders and the others).
This has much of the same elements as the Rockton series--starts with a missing person, the Yukon wilderness holding a place an another character, a partially familiar cast of characters. So in some ways much of this felt very similar. But Casey and Dalton are now in charge. Haven is their community. And it isn't ready yet so there is only so much they can say to the construction workers as they investigate the disappearance of two crew members. Casey now has the added layer of having to wrestle with the ethics of a possible murder against the need to stay off grid and unknown as a community. I just love how we jump into that character arc for her right from the beginning.
And there is an added twist at the very end of the book that will add an even greater level of complexity to this new series. I'm very excited to see where that goes.
How fantastically fun this is!! Casey and Eric are starting up a new hidden town, after Rockton is disbanded by its management team. Work is almost complete on the new site, Haven's Rock, when a worker goes missing. In come Eric and Casey to find her, and the excitement begins. Not only are they getting their first looks at their very own new town, but they have twists and turns to investigate, since it seems there is more to this mystery than just someone wandering off when they shouldn't.. Misdirection, lies. and misadventures await. Will they find the missing person, or is there more to the story? Read it yourself, and find out!! What a great start to a glorious spin-off series. WHEN will someone pick this up as a series??
Murder at Haven's Rock is a spinoff of the Rockton mystery series set in the Yukon wilderness.
Rockton is one of my absolute favorite series. So I was excited to see that the characters would continue in this new series.
Can this book be read as a standalone? The narrator of this book is once again Casey. And I would definitely say that you will get so much more out of this book if you've read the previous series. But it is possible to read this one as a standalone since they are starting out in a new location, the mystery is self-contained to this book, and the author does recap a lot of what happened previously.
Casey and Dalton are my favorite book couple. So it was so nice to get to see them again. We do get to see a bunch of characters from the previous series. However most are not in this book till towards the end. However we do get some exciting new characters like Yolanda, Penny, Bruno, Kendra and Gunnar.
It is wonderful to see them build the new Rockton. It's amazing to get a new mystery with some amazing reveals. Overall I absolutely loved this book!
Thank you NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
This book starts up where Armstrong’s Rockton series leaves off. Casey and her husband, Eric Dalton are building a town, a safe refuge for those clients that need a hidden place to shelter.
Their first glimpse of ‘their’ town is complicated with a search for missing contractors and the unexpected find of a dead body. The sheriff and his detective immediately get to work at what they do best, investigating and crime solving.
You are immediately drawn into the book and its complicated mysteries.
The staff of this town are interesting and unusual because of their backgrounds. However, they run a tight ship and work well together.
This book will be a quick read because you won’t want to put it down as you plow through to see how it ends.
Murder at Haven's Rock by Kelley Armstrong is a spin-off series from the author’s really good Rockton series. It was really exciting to find out it was spinning off into a new town and new arc for the characters. Murder at Haven’s Rock is more of what you love with these awesome characters, except this time they are in unfamiliar terrain and there are new characters wrapped up in it. The mystery itself kept me guessing, and it left some long arc threads set up for the rest of the series. I read it in one sitting into the night. A bit more of a lighthearted read than the previous series, but it really worked here. Recommended to Kelly Armstrong fans. You don’t have to have read the previous series, but it probably helps.
I’m glad that we don’t have to leave the Rockton world and characters even if we have left Rockton. It’s nice that the series gets a fresh start where Casey and Dalton get to build the town they want from the beginning. This, of course, brings new challenges and new murders. Hey, it wouldn’t be a Rockton book without it.
The thing that I love about these mysteries is the setting. Haven’s Rock, like Rockton, is set in the Yukon and so besides worrying about a killer in the woods the characters have to cope with the elements and the wildlife which are also deadly. Although this is a new series, everything feels pretty similar in tone, plot, and characters. If you enjoyed the Rockton series, you’ll enjoy this new installment at Haven’s Rock.

OMG Kelley Armstrong has again written another page turner. I loved the Rockton series, but I think this will be even better. Way to go Kelley! Show them that Canadian authors are the best.
This was everything I hoped it would be. It has all the nostalgia of the Rockton series, with enough new elements thrown in to make it feel fresh. I loved the new characters, and honestly the mystery was better than I expected. The last Rockton book left something to be desired, but reading this now, it definitely made up for it!
