rounding up to 5 stars. Author C.J. Box has written 24 (or so) novels; Treasure State is the sixth in the Cassie Dewell series. I believe I've read one prior book by C.J. Box, but it was before I started keeping track diligently on via GoodReads.

Cassie Dewell becomes involved when another Private Investigator seems to have taken retainer fees but gone missing. There are a lot of layers to Treasure State and that is why I've decided to "round up" to 5 stars.

Treasure State references some of Cassie's prior cases, I had not read any other books in this series and didn't feel at a disadvantage in reading this book.

Many thanks to NetGalley for approving my request to for the advance read (listen) copy of the audiobook. I thought that the narrator Christina Delaine did a pretty good job; the poet who called Cassie sounded quite creepy. Some voices of different characters in the book sounded similar, although it really didn't detract from the performance. Thank you to the author C.J. Box and to Macmillan Audio for making the NetGalley review available. The opportunity to listen to the advance read copy is in exchange for this honest review.

This time around Casey is investigating two different situations one is a Forster the second is a thief the first is easy but it wouldn’t be a great CJ box book if the second one was as well. Are usually am over the moon for Casey’s investigations and I believe this is the fifth or sixth one and have loved all the ones before this one was only OK for me. I found it started slow and now though like most books by Mr. box it wrapped up quickly there were still parts of the books I kept losing interest. I don’t know if that’s because of the plot or my mood because I usually as I said I’m over the moon for his books. I thought the narrator did an awesome job and I did finish it and was interested to find out the ending, I still think it is worth Reading and I will recommend it because he is such a great writer and it was still very interesting I just couldn’t get into it. I received this book from net galley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

TREASURE STATE is a mystery story by C.J. Box involving female private investigator Cassie Dewell. The setting is modern day Montana, specifically a small former mining town named Anaconda. Cassie is working simultaneously on two cases – one involves fraud and a slick operator who has stolen significant funds from her client, an older woman named Candyce Fly. The other involves a fortune that treasure seekers are competing to find. The founder of that hunt hires Cassie to see if see can find him – it is his contention that being hidden will make for a fairer contest. C.J. Box is a well-regarded author (Joe Pickett is another of his characters) and it should be no surprise that TREASURE STATE received starred reviews from Booklist and Publishers Weekly. I greatly enjoyed the audio version read by Christina Delaine. The story is intricately plotted and while there are references to previous Cassie Dewell adventures (this is number six in the series), this Montana mystery is full of its own twists and turns and works as a stand-alone.

This is the first I have read/listened to in this series and found this could be deemed a standalone. Cassie Dewel is a PI and she is working two cases. One is for a woman in Florida who feels she has been taken for millions from another PI and she wants this proven and the other is about the treasure chest, actually the author of the treasure. She has been hired by the author to figure out who he is. All is not what it seems in Big Sky Country but Cassie does a great job of figuring it out even when danger is lurking around all the corners. I am a fan of Big Sky and even if I wasn't I would have been hooked by this one. I will be watching for more in this series, I'm hooked now.

This is the latest addition to the Cassie Dewell series. We find Cassie on the hunt for a con man and the fortune his has stolen. She follows him to Anaconda, Montana where she runs into some very "colorful" characters to say the least. She is also on the trail of treasure that can be found if you follow the strange poem to the exact location. We also are reintroduced to a previous character from one of the other books. As is Cassie's style she ruffles some feathers and puts herself in danger. You will have to stick around to find out if she "gets her man" and finds a treasure. Another good one from C.J. Box.

This was my first C.J. Box book and I was pleasantly surprised. It had all of the things I look for in a mystery/thriller book. The characters were interesting and well-developed. Even though this wasn't the first book in this series, I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything, like an inside joke. The plot and story were well thought out and planned. I will definitely be going back and reading the other books in this series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for giving me an ARC audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Treasure State is the sixth book in the Cassie Dewell series (The Highway Quartet) from CJ Box.

"Cassie's latest case has her hunting for a con-man who took millions from a widow in Florida. She's also looking for the last PI that was also hunting him, but has disappeared.
She's also working for a client with a strange request. He wrote a poem in a steak house promising riches to whoever could find the treasure he's hidden away, using only the clues in the poem. He wants Cassie to try to find him. Since five people have died looking for the treasure, she just wants to end the treasure hunt.
Cassie has her hands full with the two cases and knows that Big Sky Country can hide much darker things behind the picturesque landscape."

Cassie is an interesting character from Box. Many times in fiction, detectives are almost superhuman in their ability to solve crime and vanquish bad guys. Cassie is a middle-aged widow, mother of a teenage boy and likes a package of gas station doughnuts. But she's smart and has the doggedness to pursue a lead.
Some great bad guys in this book.

Lots of characters but the narrator, Christina Delaine, does a great job. This is one of the better audiobooks I've listened to this year.

Great story and great character from Box

This is the sixth in the series. This story is set in Montana and involves Cassie looking for a con man that has fleeced several women of millions of dollars. Candyce Fly of Boca Grande, Florida has hired Cassie to find the conman. Cassie is curious to learn what has happened to the PI she initially hired once he hit Anocanda, MT. Anocanda is an old mining town two hours from Butte. The second case is the originator of Sir Scott’s treasure who has hired her to find him. If she does, there is a bonus in it for her. He doesn’t think she’ll be able.

There are plenty of twists in this case & Mr. Box has a way of building the tension. The motive behind the fleecing was interesting but I believe it came down to greed.

I was allowed to listen to this book by Netgalley and am not required to leave a positive review. I chose to do so.

Oh, this is a really good one! "Treasure State" can be read on its own although it's part six of the Highway Quartlet series or "Big Sky" series on ABC.

Cassie Dewell is a 40-something single mom and a PI in Bozeman, Montana. Here, she has two cases going on for her, the first is discovering the man who claims to have posted a poem at a local bar pointing to the whereabouts of “Sir Scott’s Treasure” that drew treasure hunters to the area. The person who hires her is the poet himself.

The second mystery involves tracking down a conman who charms widows in multiple cities into investing millions with his nonexistent investment firm. Candyce Fly of Boca Grande, Florida lost all her money to this man. Her first PI has gone AWOL after his last contact from Montana. The clues lead Cassie to an old mining town, Anaconda.

If you're new to the series, I don't think you'll have a hard time warming up to Cassie. She's smart and observant. She takes precautions when on the job, none of that wreckless nonsense here. The small cast of characters makes the book easy to follow.

If you decide to read from the beginning, you're in for a surprise and that's all I'm willing to say! I highly recommend this well-written series.

The audiobook narrated by Christina Delaine gives Cassie the "I mean business" attitude. I think her voice of male characters is a little awkward, but I got used to it eventually. I know it's been a while, but I secretly wish January LaVoy was still reading it.

The sixth installment of The Highway Quarter was a page turner!
I’ve watched the tv show, Big Sky before I realized that there were books in the series so I was super excited to read this book.

The story is told mainly in Cassie Dewell POV but it does have alternate viewpoints. The multiple POVs does not take away from the story. I found it intriguing and it added to the story.
I absolutely enjoyed the scenes and interactions with the people of Anaconda while she searches for a con man. You truly see how amazing Cassie is and how fearless she is.
The only reason why I didn’t rate it higher was due to the mention of masks and how it came across-I personally didn’t care for it.

The audiobook narrator, Christina Delaine was a fantastic narrator. She portrayed Cassie and other characters very well. She used a variety of tones and inflections that kept the listener engaged. My only complaint was her laughter. It would come out as a cackle.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys watching the show, and any PI and mystery books.

A very special thanks to Minatour Books, Netgalley, and Macmillan Audio for the gifted copy and ALC.

This new book by CJ Box follows recurring character Cassie Dewell. A private investigator, Cassie is working on a case about a supposed treasure that people from all over are trying to locate. The alleged treasure placer is releasing the odd clue here and there to keep people looking. When Cassie finds a dirty cop and untold truths, she is compelled to push further and figure out what is really going on. Overall, this is an entertaining read, if somewhat predictable. A great audio listen!

Throughly enjoyed this book. Listened to it on a road trip and I couldn't wait to finish it. I enjoyed trying to figure out who the poet was before Cassie. Cassie is a strong independent female private eye which I found more relatable than a male P.I. I really liked how it was written with throw backs to the previous Cassie novels without making it unreadable for those who haven't read any of the previous ones. I am new to Cassie and it made me want to check out more of them. Only issue I had was Cassie seemed very monotoned but that may have been the narrator.

Treasure State is the sixth book in the Cassie Dewell series by the award-winning C.J. Box.

Cassie, a former sheriff's deputy, now works as a private investigator. This time she's on the trail of a con man who swindles wealthy women out of their money. A case she accepts after the original PI working the case disappears. Cassie is also trying to unravel a second mystery involving a poem that leads to hidden treasure and has already killed five treasure hunters. And oddly enough, Cassie's client is the poet who hid the millions in gold and has now hired her to try to find him.

This was my first C.J. Box book, and while primarily a plot-driven story, I connected with the MC, Cassie. She is a strong, intelligent, caring, and relatable female detective succeeding in a male-dominated profession while juggling family responsibilities. The Montana setting is described beautifully, and Box goes into the sad history of copper prospectors and open mining that left the area destroyed and the residents abandoned. This is well-plotted through both investigation storylines and fast-paced. Excellently narrated by Christina Delaine, the mild suspense and danger made for a compelling story. I could not stop listening and finished it in record time!

Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and Minotaur Books for this ALC. I really enjoyed it!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the chance to listen to and review this audiobook.
I’ve read all the Joe Picket novels and some other of CJ Box’s books as well. This is the first one I’ve read/listened to from this series.
While this book is I believe the sixth one of the series it was still easy to follow along. I enjoyed it. I will be looking into listening to or reading the other five books in the series. I am a big CJ Box fan and this one did not let me down. Narrator did a great job as well.

This was my first Cassie Dewell book, although I've read a couple from Box's other series with Joe Pickett and it was a nice surprise to find one of his daughters in this book. The story revolves around a few separate cases - a treasure hunt, a missing PI, a conman stealing millions from lonely women, and tangentially a case from Cassie's past. Box does a great job of handling these threads and keeping them straight for the reader while making me care about the outcome for each. The narrator was good at differentiating the voices, but was a bit too monotone for my taste since I listened on a long drive. A big thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the early listen in return for my honest review. 3.5 stars

3.5 stars, rounded up
Treasure State is the first in the Cassie Dewell series that I’ve read (it’s the sixth in the series), but I found it worked well as a stand-alone. I liked that Cassie was a typical woman - close to 40, slightly overweight, not quite in shape, needs reading glasses. No Super Woman qualities, just a hard working PI. I liked that she didn’t take unnecessary chances and tried to take precautions.
There’s a national treasure hunt going on and people have focused on Montana as the site of the treasure chest. Cassie is working two cases. The first client, supposedly the man who hid the gold, wants her to see if she can discover him. The second is a woman out of Florida looking for a con man she says bamboozled her out her fortune.
Box keeps the story moving along at a brisk pace. The book is told in a nonlinear fashion and includes other POVs besides Cassie’s, which worked well. My one complaint was that the one bad guy was so nasty, at times he felt like a caricature.
Cassie is a single mother and a daughter. Box doesn’t spend a lot of time on her personal life. But what there was worked well and I would have liked to have seen a little more.
The ending worked well for both storylines.
Christina Delaine was a great narrator, perfectly capturing Cassie, while also able to differentiate the other voices (although one of her cackling laughs was pretty irritating.).
My thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for an advance copy of this audiobook.

PI Cassie has a new case that puts her on the hunt for a con man accused of steeling a widow's fortune.
This is book 6 in the Cassie Dewell series, but the first I read, and it can be read as a stand alone. The way the pandemic is broached was frustrating to me, but the setting descriptions were great, so was the narration (I listened to the audio book). This mystery is plot-driven, fast paced and contains two cases.
I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Cassie Dewell, a private investigator who had recently been on the track of a serial killer called “The Lizard King”, is at it again. She is hired to track down a con man who had charmed and relieved wealthy older women of substantial amounts of money. She learns that another private investigator on the same trail had disappeared. She follows the trail that leads to Anaconda, a place in Montana, founded by Marcus Daly, one of the Copper Kings.

She also investigates the weird treasure hunt initiated by an unknown person, which has resulted in a frenzy of activity among hopefuls, some of which has not been salubrious to those involved.

As she investigates both cases, she is drawn into a web with a crooked cop and an affluent man at the center of it all.

Will she be able to decipher what is going on before time runs out?

This was an ALC, and I enjoyed the narration.

I wasn't a huge fan of the narrator, however, she "grows" on me as the writing/story is so good, I learned to quickly get over it, as the story was fast paced, interesting, great characters, great descriptions. I absolutely appreciate a diverse take on the 2020 pandemic - esp with all the new information coming out about the mistakes, the repercussions on children, impoverished people, side effects, etc.
This is a book I'd recommend to new readers of CJ Box, and one that fans of Mr. Box will for sure love.

Well structured mystery in the PI Cassie Dewell series, this one taking place in Montana -- near Anaconda. Good pacing and good characters (as always). I didn't love the reader, who I found a little too slow and unnecessarily drawly. Another reviewer has commented on the attitude in the book toward COVID masking -- I would say the author was simply expressing the kind of views his characters would have had -- and frankly I agree with many of them
