Amelie is down on her luck. Both of her parents have passed away and she's on her own trying to make ends meet. When she finds herself homeless and without a job, she lucks into a job as a live-in assistant/housekeeper for a wealthy woman with connections to a popular magazine and its owner, billionaire Jed Hawthorne.
Flash forward. Amelie is now married to billionaire Jed Hawthorne and has just been kidnapped and trapped in a pitch black room. Is it to do with Jed or something more sinister?
This book was a wild ride. The jarring transitions between present Amelie kidnapped and barely surviving in this pitch black room where she's fed by two mysterious men and only allowed light when she uses the toilet to tales of her life after she's found this amazing job and married a billionaire (though he hides secrets and their marriage is definitely not what it seems) is so unsettling. I loved it.
This book had all the hallmarks of a good thriller. I would give it five stars if it weren't for a few pacing issues and a couple of times when I thought the storyline seemed a bit too unlikely. I don't want to give away spoilers but the circumstances of the marriage of Amelie and Jed seemed unlikely to me.
As for the audiobook itself, the narration was perfect. I would love to have the privilege of listening to another book narrated by Georgia Maguire.
What a thriller! It’s dark but good! I definitely recommend this to thriller fans! I couldn’t put it down.
@baparisauthor is an auto-buy author for me and her newest psychological thriller is another solid read! I finished this novel in one weekend and could not put it down. I switched between the audiobook and e-book. I loved the fast pace and short chapters. While I did guess one of the twists, the plot still held my attention and had me wanting to read more. The audiobook was well narrated and I enjoyed being able to keep up with the story while running errands. You can’t go wrong with adding either the book or audiobook (or both!) to your TBR list!
Thank you to @netgalley @macmillan.audio and @stmartinspress for allowing me access to the book and audiobook ahead of publication in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for this advance listener copy in exchange for my honest review.
Full disclosure, I toggles back and forth between print and audio. This review is for the audio.
I really didn't like this narrator. Her voices were awful and it sounded like she was saying Ned, not Jed. Her voice for Jed was not good either. I just didn't like this book.
My book review: Oh I wanted to like this book so much. I've heard so many good things about BA Paris and this is the first book I've read by her. The premise was amazing. But, I didn't get what I expected. This book was slow moving and I felt my mind wandering while reading it. I just wasn't a fan. I didn't care for any of the characters, especially Amalie. The plot was far fetched and disappointing. I will not give up on BA Paris. I'll give another of her books a go.
People will like this book and I know they already do, it just wasn't for me. Three stars.
What a thrilling, suspenseful, emotional roller coaster! I absolutely loved the time hops from past to present throughout the entire book. This stylistic choice by Paris did wonders for character development and really grabbed my attention. In other books, flashbacks have been confusing and irritating to me, but this book flowed so well and really needed breaks from the present. At the point where past an present collide, you better buckle that seat belt, because it really takes off from there. You better know all of the characters you’ve met along the way.
In this gripping tale of loss, friendship, survival, deception, fortunes, contracts, kidnapping, darkness, and redemption, you’ll never guess which captor locked Amelie up in pitch-black seclusion. You’ll be surprised how she develops a sense of safety and trust….and possibly admiration….for her 2nd captor, whose voice she never hears and face she never sees. Is he trying to protect and care for her all along? Why, when he’s keeping her locked away although she’s done nothing wrong?
The Prisoner is a must read by B.A. Paris. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is I feel this story could have been told with less words. I really enjoyed the narrator for the audiobook. Georgia Maguire speaks with a soothing British accent, and mixes in some sophisticated French tones where needed!
Thanks to Macmillan Audio for the ARC!
Thank you Harper Collins and Netgalley for providing me with an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The first half of this book is intriguing. We are left in suspense to know why the kidnapping of our MC had occurred. There are two timelines we’re following, the past which tells the story of the MC and the present when she’s been kidnapped.
The second half felt a bit lackluster as the justification of the kidnapping was very mediocre.
The narrator did a good job with the audiobook
Oh I loved this.I loved the full circle- If all the info had been out things would have been so different, multiple times over. Such a good psychological thriller as always from BA Paris!!! Thank you!!!!
This was a great "3" part novel: the past, the present, and the present continued
I received an audio ARC.
Story: I found the mystery to be fascinating and definitely full of twists, some of which made me sad. But by the end I was still guessing and was quite surprised!
Narration: excellent. Was clear and concise.
BA Paris is back with The Prisoner! I enjoyed this much more than The Dilemma, which dragged on endlessly. The Prisoner was quick paced with short chapters with a solidly developed main character, Emelie. I was invested almost immediately and rooting for her! I wished we learned more about Ned and his back story (beyond the minimal facts) to validate his villain status. In fact, I wanted the other characters - specifically Emelie’s best friends- to have been more identifiable. They blended together more than I would have liked, The ending wrapped up in somewhat of a far fetched manner, which dropped my rating. I still enjoyed this audio book and listened to it in a day.
Thank you to the author, MacMillan audio, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
The narrator was great. The story was not. I was very disappointed with the total lack of character development, the plot holes, and the predictability. B.A. Paris has done much better than this. 1.5 stars.
The Prisoner is a quick read & I enjoyed it.. It has short chapters and the beginning is very captivating.. I personally prefer shorter chapters, especially in a book that switches timelines.. The end of the story felt a bit rushed and ended up falling flat.. However, the story of Amelie is entertaining & suspenseful.. 3.5 stars
*Narration Note* - The narrator’s voice is slightly “computer generated” sounding. I was able to speed it up and on 1.5 speed it looses a lot of that feeling. I recommend listening at a slightly faster speed, if you can hear everything & keep up. :) The narrator’s voice is very pleasant & I enjoyed listening.
Synopsis- Amelie has always been a survivor, from losing her parents as a child in Paris to making it on her own in London. As she builds a life for herself, she is swept up into a glamorous lifestyle where she married the handsome billionaire Ned Hawthorne.
But then, Amelie wakes up in a pitch-black room, not knowing where she is. Why has she been taken? Who are her mysterious captors? And why does she soon feel safer here, imprisoned, than she had begun to feel with her husband Ned?
Such a thrilling book. I liked how it went past to present to catch up on the backstory or how she ended up stuck. My favorite part was finding out she had a home and money to go back to. The main character was such a bad guy. Wasn’t mad about what happened to him.
This was just meh for me. Felt like it dragged and the twists weren’t too interesting. Definitely wasn’t my favorite of his books but was quick listen.
This is my first book by this author. I've seen a lot of readers bragging about her books so I thought I would give it a try, This book is a psychological thriller. When Amelie is kidnapped and held prisoner, she wants to escape. She needs to escape first from her captors and then her husband. I did this as audio. The book is told from two time lines, the past and the present. Of course, the past is used to explain how Amelie got to where she is a prisoner and the present explains her situation as a prisoner.
In a strange way this book reminded me of Saint X. I know they are different books, but ultimately it's about finding answers.
I wasn't satisfied with the way it all ended. Or rather, I wasn't satisfied with the explanations. And let's leave it at that.
This is not a genre I read a lot of, so I think it's a good start for me to get my feet wet.
I was able to listen to The Prisoner by B A Paris. This story follows a young Emily into adulthood via alternating time lines. It starts off with a kidnapping and then flashes beck a few years. It goes like this until the timelines connect.
I bet much enjoyed this novel. It was quick paced and keep me guessing up until the vet end!! All in all an amazing story!!
I like to go into reading thrillers blind and I’m glad I did for this one. Another good one from BA Paris! I really enjoyed this one and the mystery around what was happening. I did figure out certain pieces of this story, but it didn’t take away from it.
The narrator was excellent, which can make or break an audiobook for me!
My only complaint was the ending. It felt abrupt and there wasn’t closure so now I have questions!
I was beyond excited when I recieved the written and audio for B.A. Paris' new book from Netgalley and McMillan Audio.
The begining of the book through about 40% was very intriguing. I was wondering where Amelie's story and kidnapping was going. I kept flipping back and forth on if Ned was a part if it or not even though he was kidnapped too. As other characters, Carolyn and Carl and Hunter to name a few, emerged more ideas came into my head.
The ending was not what I had expected for the begining. Though there were a few loose ends and the ending lack shock value or excitement, it was still a solid book.
I really liked the narrator on the audio version.
I Buddy Read The Prisoner with my great friend Tiffany. I love chatting about books while I read.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
The opening chapters introduce us to Amelie in a dual timeline explaining her a) current predicament and b) details of her life over the past 3 years that have culminated in said predicament. This novel is split into 2 parts and personally, I enjoyed the first half more as I found the second half slow and rather predictable.
Part 1: Amelie is kidnapped and held prisoner in a pitch-black room. Through the writing and details, you can feel the disorientation that Amelie was experiencing. The flashback scenes interspersed with the 'present day' kidnapping scenes kept the reader engaged.
Part 2: The second half felt like a Scooby-Doo episode, in which the reader is having the resolution told to them after the "unmasking." I read a lot of psychological thriller novels and when these novels are written well, the exposition isn't necessary. It was a "ruh-roh!" for me.
Lastly, the labeling of Stockholm Syndrome was just completely off for me - add to that the ending where she wants to have anything to do with Hunter, and it's a double nope.
2/5 stars.
B A Paris has been an auto read for me and I was super excited for The Prisoner. This one had things I liked and didn’t like. It was a slow burner, but the chapters were short. I did like that this one wasn’t a very long book. I always love when a book goes back in time. My problems were that there were too many characters and some of the things that happened in the book seemed too far fetched.
I will continue to read this author.
B.A Paris kills it again in this new novel where we are following Amelie as she is making it on her own in London. She’s minding her own business when she gets engulfed in a billionaire. They fall in love and get married, but she never expected to wake up and be unfamiliar with what is going on. What’s strange is that, she doesn’t remember what happened or why she’s here, she can’t even remember who took her. But she starts to think that life in captivity is better than her lush lifestyle.
