A great spy thriller with interesting characters. The mystery and action in this book keeps you engaged and interested.
Sarah is new to the international espionage game and she is thrown in head first into it. Michael is a veteran M16 agent and together they band together to stop a sinister plot. An electrifying thriller, a gripping plot and great characters keeps the reader engrossed in the story. An exciting thriller story.

Sarah Black, is thrown into a world of espionage and intrigue when she falls for the suave Michael, an agent in the Queen’s service. She finds herself alone in a world where she does not know whom to trust.
This bold spy thriller is a must read. I loved the interplay of chess and the world in which Sarah finds herself in. This kept me on the edge of my sea. I cannot wait to see where Sarah’s adventures will take us next.
Filled with mystery, deceit, thrills and intrigue, The King’s Pawn is a book I could not put down and would recommend it for fans of spy/thriller novels.
A fast paced thrilling read across many countries with many intriguing characters. I loved the fact we had a female spy protagonist. Sarah was a great character- naive but gutsy and with the intelligence needed to be one move ahead of her opponents.
I loved the references to the game of chess and found the thrill of the chase a clever grab for my attention.
I very nearly gave up on this book. Though the subject matter was interesting, it didn’t catch my attention in the way it should have, but I’m glad I persevered because around a quarter of the way through that changed. The characters clicked and I found myself gripped.
The author clearly knows her stuff and it was fascinating to read about a region that I knew little about. Full of twists and turns, it soon became unputdownable, and I look forward to more in the Sarah Black series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Burning Chair.
I'm not much of a spy/thriller reader but The King's Pawn may just change that. I found the intrigue and MI6 adventures of Sarah Black to be very entertaining.
Sarah, having just graduated from University, is young and inexperienced when she falls for Michael, an agent in the Queen's service, and finds herself catapulted into the world of spies and world travels. Unfortunately she isn't aware of any fellow agents or anyone who can help her since she is basically on her own as she boldly approaches world leaders and practically gets herself killed several times. Can Michael be trusted? Is he leaving her to fend for herself?
I enjoyed the escapades that Sarah was launched into and found it really difficult to figure out who she could trust and who was working with whom. All in all a great spy thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat.
My thanks to #NetGalley and Burning Chair for #TheKingsPawn ARC. This opinion is my own.
I really wanted to like this one, but I'm afraid that I just could not engage with it at all.. I absolutely loved the cover. It was so evocative and definitely caught my eye and my imagination. I was drawn in by the concept, and by the interplay of chess in the spy world - which is of course such a natural metaphor and fit.
Unfortunately, I found it impossible to connect with any of the characters. The back and forth between the chapters focused on Sarah and those focused on the chess pieces were confusing rather than intriguing. And iwas confounded by the fact that, for a spy book, there just didn't seem to be any oomph here - I could not feel the intrigue or the scheming machinations that I was hoping for and that are part and parcel of the genre. This one wasn't for me.
Incidentally I hate having to leave stars for a book that didn't work for me and I wasn't able to finish. Unfortunately Netgalley makes you and my standard rule for consistency's sake is that I give two stars if I wasn't able to engage with the book enough to finish.
