A cute start of the year rom com. A must read for those that are confused on what they're really looking for in a partner. I loved the element of comedy in this book. A must read.
*arc for honest review*
this book was so good i really liked it but for some reason i didn’t get attached to the characters like i thought i was going to. but overall so good i totally recommend!!
thanks netgalley for this arc!! <3
I'm a fan of Lease on Love and I was excited to see another book by Falon Ballard, however Just My Type was a bit tough to push through because of how bitter and combative Lana was with her ex-boyfriend Seth, who takes on a challenge at Lana's place of employment.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group for the ARC.
Is there anything better than starting the New Year off with a 5 star read? I don’t think so. I absolutely loved Just My Type, but there’s no surprise there because I loved Falon Ballard’s first novel Lease on Love. I’m all for the second chance romance and this slow burn was everything I needed after a small reading slump. The character’s were adorable and I loved following the MC, Lana’s, journey to find herself. The romance, friendship, strained relationships, and second chances made this book a breath of fresh air and I can’t wait for it to be released next month so I can have my own copy.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for this ARC!
Just My Type was a fun book. I liked the history between the main characters, and how it played out with the "competition." I enjoyed it a lot!
I don’t know why I kept putting this book to the side. But I did. I kept saying I was going to read it and just didn’t. I was a total idiot for that. This book was so beautifully written in my opinion. I adored both main characters and loved how you could really feel the emotions when reading Lana’s words. Even with Seth. I love when I actually adore the male counterpart in the story and don’t just absolutely hate him until he redeems himself. Once I got to know Seth in the story, I just felt for him and I really loved them together, even from the beginning. I will say that the amount of times that I absolutely sobbed from this book was pretty high. Some of them happy tears and others heartbreaking tears. The spicy level in the book was very well done too. I love that they weren’t so over the top but were still hot. It was the PERFECT amount for me. I’m definitely hoping this author makes a second book that focuses on Tessa and Rob! I neeeed that story! I seriously can’t wait to read more from this author!
I loved this story! I had the author's previous title on my bookshelf so I read her first book first and loved it then dove into this book. Just My Type - I loved even more! Lana (great name) and Seth were high school sweethearts after having known each for years. Both are writers. Seth has traveled the world writing stories, Lana has been in LA since going there for college and writes for an online source. Seth comes to LA to take a job and ends up working at the same place as Lana. I won't spoil the story but it is so good!!!!
I 10 out of 10 recommend Just My Type by @falonballard coming out February 7, 2023!
Just My Type is Ballard's second novel (her first was Lease on Love) and this one was just as fantastic as her first one. I was hooked from the beginning when Lana is broken up with by her longtime boyfriend when she thought he was going to propose (think Elle Woods in the beginning of Legally Blonde) and then gets a DM from a past love, Seth, that just happens to stroll himself into her work the next day. Lana and Seth have a looooooong history and the two are now competing for 1 columns and they must write about their experiences with a list of tasks each created for the other. Second chance love? Former lovers to enemies to lovers again? Forced proximity? Every trope is pulled off to perfection on this book and I had literal tears in my eyes at the end of it. Gah, love love love!
i binged this book on a flight and was almost sad for it to end. Second chance can be a little too much for me (and this was pushing it a little) but watching these two characters grow and learn from each other and come together through a competition was heartwarming and so rewarding. Lana has basically the worst day ever only to find out that her high school sweetheart is back in town and competing with her for a dream job. As they compete, the truth of what happened all of those years ago comes to light and their true feelings do as well. It felt like Kerry Rea's books and definitely had the emotional pull of Ballard's first book. The side characters were so much fun and I am pretty sure I need to have slack channels like they do!
Her sophomore novel, following Lease on Love. I was so excited to receive an eARC from Netgalley for this one. Pub date is February 7.
It follows Lana and Seth’s competition for a chance to write a column for a large publication, every journalists dream. But Seth is Lana’s high school sweetheart and it did not end well. Seth invades Lana’s life and workplace.
The competition pits them against each other.
Can Lana, a serial monogamist, stay single?
Can Seth, a ladies man, settle down?
Enemies to lovers/second chance romance is done so well!
Yes, there’s romance but this is more of a self exploration journey which I loved. Lana had her bestie, May, there to support her along with her work pals and their Slack convos are hilarious.
Lana took time to learn about herself.
🫶🏼 She’s stronger & braver than she thinks
🫶🏼 There are plenty of men she could connect with and don’t settle for the first one that shows interest
🫶🏼 Timing matters
🫶🏼 She has something to offer others that has nothing to do with being in a relationship
🫶🏼 Try new things & be open to experiences
🫶🏼 Therapy!!!!! That you can’t control the actions of others, only how she reacts to them
TL;DR

This book has a lot of my favorite tropes so I was super excited to read it after looking at the synopsis! The enemies to lovers paired with the second chance romance theme worked really well 😍 Definitely has a “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” vibe- which is amazing because it’s one of the best romcoms everrrrr.
Lana is determed to stay single while writing a story for her romance column, and Seth (her high school ex) gets hired on the same site she works out, but he is writing about settling down and being a good boyfriend . They become workplace rivals and have to fight against each other in hopes of a promotion. There’s just really gripping tension between them and it was KILLING me because I was waiting for the slow burn to pay off & it definitely did.
I liked the way the character development went throughout the book. You get to see who they were in high school and the kind of relationship they had then, and then you get to see the conflict, and then the aftermath where they’re still upset at each other but still hopelessly attracted and in love with each other. *swoon* Seth is such a cutie and he was definitely my favorite character.
If you’re looking for a cute romcom with an enemies to lovers, workplace rivals, and second chance romance vibe- read this!!! I would definitely recommend it because it just gives off happy vibes :) I’ve read Fallon Ballard’s book Lease on Love and I really liked that as well, her writing style is really fun. ❤️
This is the first book from Falon that I’ve read. I loved it. It’s how to lose a guy in ten days in this second chance romance.
I can’t wait to read more from her!
Thanks to netgally and the publisher for this arc!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Just My Type by Falon Ballard. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for this ARC.
I am not always a fan of second chance romances, but Just My Type worked for me. I loved Lana and Seth and their competition to win their dream job. The mix of discovering what is truly important and romantic bantering was fun and kept the plot moving. This book is a fun low-angst romance with a satisfying HEA. I give Just My Type 4/5 stars.
4.5 stars
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Lana is constantly moving from one relationship into the next, never spending any time alone. Her ex Seth is the opposite. She’s a writer for a website in LA, and he’s been traveling around the world chasing stories. That is, until he shows up at her job, and her boss has the idea to have them compete in meeting relationship goals.
This was a really fun second chance romance. I loved the character development. The only thing stopping me from giving it 5 stars is some of the miscommunication issues that Lana and Seth face. Other than that, it was great!
"I'm going to make you regret the day you met me.' 'Who's to say I don't already?"
I absolutely enjoyed this book and finished it in one sitting. A friends to lovers, second chance, and workplace war is was amazing. A contemporary romance book type version of 'How to lose a guy in 10 days, this book is a must for rom-com lovers.
The buildup, conflict and anticipation made me not want to do anything else. I have absolutely nothing else to add except this is a rom-com in book format, and the best you can get at it.
I fell in love with every character and the fact that Lana was able to put her mental health and care for herself, with meeting with her therapist, is something I admire and am grateful to see that open version of a subject in a book.
Check TW/CW before reading though due to a (mild) amount of a toxic workplace!
4.5/5 stars! Just my type is a very cute enemies to lovers/second chance romance featuring two writers finding themselves vying for a job in LA, years after their whirlwind romance ended. This rom com is engaging and sweet as you find yourself rooting for Lana as she wrestles with trying to be single and find herself while also following her heart. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for something heartwarming, light, and engaging!
I thought this book was adorable. I enjoyed Ballard's previous book, Lease on Love, and I thought this was an excellent follow-up. The love story was cute, the characters enjoyable. Definitely recommend
Lease on Love was one of my favorite books of 2022, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on Just My Type - even if second chance romances are often tricky for me. This has the fun and personality of Ballard's debut, paired with a storyline that's deeper than it might appear on the surface. And I love an office rivals romance, so there were things that were great. Unfortunately, it pushed all of my second chance buttons in the worst way, with constant animosity and miscommunication, combined with a hearty dose of OW/OM drama. I also think the hero's point of view was needed to smooth out a few of the rough edges, because filling in the blanks with our heroine's (skewed, unreliable) perspective did not endear either of them to me. It can be a difficult trope for me to love, so I'm sure second chance lovers will have an easier time settling in. I ended up skimming/DNFing because I was frustrated. There's a lot of good stuff going on in the story though, and I'm looking forward to whatever Ballard writes next.
Thank you Penguin Group and Putnam for my e-ARC in exchange for the honest review. I enjoyed this book! We followed Lana’s journey of finding herself. Lana only goes from one long relationship to another and when she becomes single she starts to focus on herself until her ex boyfriend shows up. They are assigned tasks to write in their article. Lana is supposed to write about staying single and Seth needs to learn to settle down. Whoever wins the most votes on the article wins their own column at ATF but it doesn’t seem to go as planned.
I give this book 3.5 stars! I enjoyed going through their journey and the characters kept me intrigued. The author allowed us to connect with the characters and feel their emotions along the way. While I was hoping in the end they stayed as friends and continue working on themselves to better it was still a good ending!
Lana is always in a relationship, with only a few months in between boyfriends. So when she receives a break up instead of a proposal after four years, she knows she won’t be single long.
.
When her ex boyfriend from 12 years ago comes to town the day after her break-up, Lana’s world is shaken yet again. Even worse, her boss puts them into a competition against each other, where the winner gets to write what they want for the website that they work for. They each have 10 tasks to complete, Lana’s to help her learn to be alone, and Seths to help him learn to settle down. Both journalists accept their tasks, but can they both follow through?
.
This was a super cute read and I really enjoyed it. The characters development was perfect, making me enjoy all of them. I hope there is another book to go more in depth on some of the other characters stories in the future! It was my first book by Falon Ballard, but it will not be my last. Definitely recommend reading this one!
Will post on instagram next week and Goodreads today!
