Just My Type was the PERFECT rom com. There is a second chance romance and enemies to lovers troupe in the story that was perfected with the writing competition through work. Lana and Seth's chemistry was palpable and I loved how realistic their story was. I also really liked how therapy was brought in and that it showed the growth that can come from that. I think it is really important for people to see the positives of therapy. Absolutely loved it and am now a Falon Ballard fan!!
Thanks to @netgalley, @falonballard, and @PutnamBooks for this advanced copy!
This is my first book by Salon Ballard and it won't be my last.
Who doesn't love a lovers- to enemies- to lovers trope? I know I do!
With all of this I still felt that the storyline was original.
Thank you to netgalley for the arc!
I adored this book so much more than I expected! I wanted to read it for the trope but it's so much more than that! It was such a beautiful loving second chance and self love love story. Adored Seth and Seth & Lana together ahhh wanted more of them.
I received this book from netgalley and Penguin Group. This is a fun chicklit story with the coworker fight for one job troupe. It is another fun easy read by Fallon Ballard.
I loved this book. I knew from the first few pages that I was going to. I love Falon's writing style. All the pop culture was great but when she made mention of Naomi Smalls I was incredibly impressed.
The story is well crafted, the characters are fabulous and the flow is wonderful. Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed this book! Despite the tropes not being my favorite, I still felt connected to this story. I removed a half-point for the miscommunication throughout the book, because I feel like it was not necessary.
Read if you like…
* Second (or third) chance romance
* Work rivals
* Sort of-enemies to lovers
I was so pleasantly surprised by LEASE ON LOVE last year so I was super excited to check out JUST MY TYPE. I enjoyed my time reading this one and would recommend it for a light, fun read. But there were a few things that brought this one down for me. First, while I'm all for a woman who is interested in "typically male" media like superhero films, I think the quirky girl nerd vibes are just played out at this point. No one finds it unique that women like Marvel, and no one uses "Thor" and "Loki" in normal conversation. Like ever. It just felt very forced to me and a bit cringe. I love a good "let's do a list" plot but the way this one came about felt far-fetched. I know we had a toxic boss situation here but there is no way anyone would think it normal that you have to fight for a column this way. Also, Always Take Fountain is a horrible name for a website. I can always tell when an author doesn't really work in media because they never talk about job scarcity and make freelancing to pay the bills sound super easy. (It's not.) And while I liked a lot about the romance (including a couple of superb sex scenes) it felt like we just didn't get enough. Not enough backstory. Not enough slow burn swoon. While I rooted for the couple to get together I didn't feel that great ache that means you've got a superb second chance romance on your hands. Overall I think this is more a case of a sophomore slump than anything and I'm looking forward to Ballard's next book but this one just didn't work as well as I wanted.
This was my first novel by this author and I don’t think I am going to read another one. I found the main characters lacked chemistry. Which sucks because this is a second chance romance novel. I found the pacing of this book to be a little off for me. I didn’t like all of the text conversations in this book either. I just found this book to not be for me. I am a huge romance reader and this didn’t give me the romance vibes I expected.
Cute and enjoyable rom-com
Lana works for an LA website writing about and giving dating advice. She moves from one long term relationship to the next but after a horrible breakup she's ready for a break from dating and her job.
Enter Seth, an old flame Lana never got over who is now working at Lana's company and who is eyeing the same job Lana wants. Sparks are flying but are they love or work related or both ?
Thanks NetGalley for the preview copy

I got an ARC of Just My Type. It is Fallon Ballard’s 2nd book. I haven’t read Lease on Love yet but I’ve heard amazing things.
Just My Type is a second chance romance. If you love How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Runaway Bride, and nerdy stuff like Marvel and Star Wars, this book is for you! I know for sure this book will land in my top 10.
Just My Type comes out February 7th! Definitely make sure you preorder it!
Well, this was certainly a pleasant surprise! The story opens with an Elle and Warner-style break up à la Legally Blonde, then morphs into a How To Lose a Guy in Ten Days-style workplace competition—and the pop culture references do not end there. Any Marvel-obsessed folks out there will certainly enjoy Lana, the FMC, and stumbling upon references to some of my favorite shows (hello, Ted Lasso) felt like unearthing little gems!
I found Lana to be very likable—Bookstagrammers will love Lana’s bookish tendencies and appreciate mentions of her TBR (she even owns the infamous booksta rolling cart)! Lana was funny, feisty and quirky, but at times she came off a bit oblivious to what was quite clear to any reader. I appreciated the character development that the author sought for Lana.
Seth, the MMC, was a little forgettable for me as far as book boyfriends go and I would have loved more backstory on the pair’s prior relationship, perhaps even an alternate timeline POV to lend depth to the conflicting feelings and often-mentioned prior heartbreak.
Having not yet read Lease on Love, this was my first time reading Falon Ballard’s work and I loved it! Overall, I thought this was a really well done, lighthearted rom com and I look forward to reading more of her work!
Thank you to @netgalley and @putnambooks for this gifted eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
TL;DR - Adorable, slow burn second chance romance featuring a pop-culture, bookish FMC.
The perfect follow up book from Ballard. She has become an auto buy author for me and Just My Type is cute, sexy, and adorable.
Lana and Seth were high school sweethearts. Ever since their breakup, Lana has been a serial monogamist while Seth has been playing the field. They have stayed on their own sides of the country. Except now Seth has shown up not just in LA but at Lana's work place- a local online news website. And the expectation is that they not only work together but compete for a new position. Lana has tasks to complete that will support her being single and Seth has takes to push him towards being in a relationship.
Fortunately Lana has some good friends to support her as she figures out how to handle her new assignment and the proximity with Seth. It gives her the opportunity to self-reflect and possibly re-connect. Overall, I enjoyed their journey together and getting to know a little more of LA. While the assignment seemed forced, it set up the story and allowed Lana to grow as a person and question her decisions. I would have like a little more about Lana- the book referenced some of her passions, but we didn't really see them in action. Overall this was really about Lana's growth more than the romance.
Thanks to the publisher for a complimentary copy. All opinions are own.
What a delightful premise.
Serial long-term relationship girl Lana writes relationship column for a LA publication but she wants to write more. So when she gets dumped, the night she thought she’d get a proposal she’s feeling pretty low. The next morning her ex Seth, like *the ex*, the one who broke her heart after dating all through high school, shows up at her work. And her boss has a brilliant idea. Lana has to learn how to be single - and her ex Seth, the serial dater (no-strings ever) needs to work on getting into an actual relationship. They create a list of 10 things they each have to do and they do a write up after each, the one who wins (all based off reader input) gets a column.
Super fun.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Pub date: 2/7/23
Genre: romcom (second chance romance, workplace competition)
Writer Lana's been a serial dater since her devastating breakup with high school sweetheart Seth. When he shows up at her office, their chemistry is still alive and well - but it's not just their hearts on the line, it's a column of Lana's very own.
When it's done right, second chance romance is one of my favorite tropes. Ballard put together a really fun read here - I loved Lana and Seth, and their verbal banter was hilarious to read. Since they were in direct competition, there were plenty of fun situations for them to clash (Lana gets Seth a high-maintenance house plant, Seth gets a friend of his to fake out Lana on a blind date, both participate in speed dating). I liked seeing them both grow over the course of the story. I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as LEASE ON LOVE, but it was a good read and I think it will be popular!
Thank you to G.P. Putnam's Sons for providing an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I LOVED Lease on Love and was beyond excited to read Just My Type, but unfortunately it just fell flat for me. I found Lana to be annoying and couldn’t connect with her at all
Thanks to Putnam for an advanced copy of Just My Type by Falon Ballard.
I absolutely adored Lease on Love and unfortunately, Just My Type didn't have the same magic to me as her first book. I appreciated the author's note at the end about how hard it is to write book two.
The premise of this sounded cute, but Seth and Lana just didn't do it for me. I found Lana immature and annoying. The whole toxic boss just added to the nope factor for me.
I know so many people who enjoyed this book, but it wasn't for me.
I was pulled into this book immediately when Lana is out to dinner with her long term boyfriend expecting a proposal, and instead being dumped! The scene at the restaurant was brilliant and I couldn't wait to read more. This second-chance, friends to enemies to lovers romance is a beautifully written love story.
Seth and Lana were childhood friends and high school sweethearts, until something happened between them and they didn't speak for years. After being dumped, Lana goes into work, hoping for the promotion of her dreams, only to find out that she now has to compete for he promotion. Against said high schoool sweetheart turned enemy, turned rival.
The goal is to create a list of dating challenges for each other and they must go through with whatever the other decides for them. Serial monogomist vs the player who never goes on more than one date with anyone. Its full of fun, spunk, heartache, grudges, and some serious chemistry. While going through these challenges, they have to post to social media and it becomes a team Lana vs team Seth situation. It's hilarious, sweet, and entertaining as hell.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a second chance romance.
5 Stars!

Lease on Love was one of my favorite books of 2022, so I was excited to read Just My Type. Overall the story fell a bit flat for me, but the second half was better than the first. I found I had to force myself to keep reading which is a usually a sign something isn’t working for me.
I thought this book would have benefitted a lot from being dial POV. Lana, the female MC, comes across as a bit immature for 30 and I really wanted to see things from Seth’s perspective. Lana did grow up over the course of the book which I appreciated and I also liked the role her therapist played in the book. The competition set up between Lana and Seth was hard for my to look past given the massive inappropriateness of the whole thing being a work set up.
Content warnings include an absentee mother/daughter relationship, an inappropriately codependent boss/employee relationship, and frequent use of alcohol.
I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Thanks to NetGalley and Putman Books for the advanced copy of this book! It was overall a cute and enjoyable read - it definitely picked up steam as the competition started and they began to complete their tasks. I didn't necessarily totally buy-in to the romance of Lana and Seth though - I think that likely we needed a bit more of their backstory in the beginning to set it up (maybe some past chapters and present chapters). I would've loved to read about Seth and Lana growing up and their love story during that phase of their lives too.
