What a fun book! This is my first Falon Ballard novel, and not I want to go read her first!
The book combined a couple of my favorite tropes (enemies to lovers + second chance romance) and it worked together so deliciously.
I enjoyed the spice, it was just enough without going over board, and their chemistry was just *chefs kiss*
*SPOILERS AHEAD* I liked the competition aspect, but I wish we could have gotten a Seth prospective to see how he was faring with his tasks. He was made out to be a playboy, but from my view he either wasn’t a playboy and that’s just what Lana thought, or he was and we just didn’t get to see him struggle with monogamy/commitment.
Over all I really enjoyed this and would definitely recommend to my friends!
Thank you to NetGalley and G.P. Putnam’s Sons for providing an advance copy of this title for review. All opinions are my own and are honestly given.
In Just My Type, relationship writer Lana Parker is forced to face off against her high school ex-boyfriend Seth Carson for her dream job. To raise the stakes, Lana and Seth are paired together for a feature series of articles as they each attempt to overcome their relationship bad habits— Lana’s challenge is to stay single as a serial monogamist and Seth’s challenge is to settle down after years as a playboy. As they spend more time together, Seth and Lana begin to remember what drew them together in the first place and begin to untangle old secrets and misconceptions. However, with love and careers on the line, will Seth and Lana be able to move past old hurts and build a future together?
As someone who also enjoyed Falon Ballard’s first novel, Lease on Love, I thought that Just My Type was fun. I’m a sucker for a good competition in a romcom, and I think that this set-up (although maybe a bit farfetched) also kept the story moving and engaging. Just My Type was very cinematic, and I could totally see it being turned into a hit Netflix romcom. Just for my own personal taste, I could have used a couple fewer pop culture references and a bit more depth to the characters/their relationship, but I still think many readers will find a lot to like in this story. I would definitely recommend it to fans of Ballard’s previous work and lovers of light contemporary romcoms, and I think this one will be a good fit for our digital collection. 3.75 stars.
This one's a miss for me. I found the writing juvenile, the premise nonsensical, and the characters childish and unlikeable. The chemistry wasn't there for me either, and I was annoyed by the constant pop culture references and therapy-style monologues.
I absolutely loved this story from start to finish. This author had me hooked and I finished in less than a day. I loved the story of Seth and Lana and found myself rooting for them at every possibly turn. I laughed, cried, screamed and giggled some more through this page turner. I just purchased her first book now and it’s safe to say I will be buying all of her books in the future.
Thank you netgalley and publisher for the advanced copy. I can’t wait to share this book with all of my friends when it comes out in February. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
I devoured an arc of this book only a day after finishing Lease on Love. I have found a new fave, insta-buy author! The way both reads center around the dreamiest of romances—the oh so swoon worthy pining, which will honestly leave your cheeks sore from smiling—and the importance of found family + working through the sort of hang-ups from one’s past that we all can relate to.
Ballard is a genius and henceforth I’m gonna stan her the very way that her characters fangirl/boy over various Disney properties, because she’s every bit the inspiring star.
Just My Type by Falon Ballard.
This was a enemies to lovers romcom at its finest. I thought it was humorous and just the cutest book. Definitely recommend. Seth & Lana had all the chemistry, tension, & passion for one another that I could ask for. I thought this was such a unique way to write this including the competition for a writing column & just the newspaper/journaling addition in general. I love this authors writing style. The mother - daughter dynamic also resonates with many people sadly but I loved how that was included because it really added to the story. I laughed, I giggled, I cried, I burst with anger, & felt absolutely every emotion while reading this.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam/ G. P. Putnam’s Sons for this advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
The book was How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days meets People we Meet on Vacation with a splash of Devil Wears Prada. If that sounds like a lot, you would be right haha While I really enjoyed this book it was a little over the top at times and felt like every romcom trope and cliche all rolled into one.
Lana and Seth were high school sweethearts who find themselves thrown back together 12 years later. After finding out they used to date their boss decides to create a bizarre writing competition where they both have to complete a list of tasks written by the other person in hopes of winning their own column. As I’m sure you can guess things don’t go exactly as planned!
This book was fast paced, funny, and enjoyable to read! If you like second chance romance definitely check this out in Feb. 2023!
If I could give this 3819191 stars I would. I love love love Fallon Ballard, when I read her first book I was left in such a book hangover and realized there was no second book. When I saw that this was coming out I just had to get my hands on it. I love the story line and I love how Fallon writes romance This was such a good quick read and I’m glad I got to read it.
I would like to thank Putnam Books for sending me this ARC through NetGalley for my honest review! Let's jump into it.
After Lana is dumped by her boyfriend of 4 years whom she thought she was getting engaged to, she doesn't expect her first boyfriend, Seth, to be the new hire at her job. When Lana finds out about her past relationship with Seth, she decides to pair the two up for some friendly competition. Lana is a known "serial monogamist" and Seth is a "serial dater". They have to make a list of things they have to accomplish and write on each task every week, the person with the most clicks, wins.
I absolutely loved this book, I devoured it in two days, which is pretty fast for me. This books was incredibly funny and it was so original. I loved Lana's character, she was honest and raw. This book was so much more than a romance novel, it was about friendship, strained relationships, and second chances. A lot of romance books lately have the same storyline but this was a breath of fresh air. This book is great for those who love the second chance romances and enemies to lover trope. Go pick up a copy on 2/7/2023 (my birthday!) I know I will be grabbing a copy for myself.
Just want to start off with this: Falon Ballard is becoming one of my new favorite romance writers. Lease on Love and now Just My Type have both made my heart swell!
Lana is never ever really single and has trouble staying out of long-term relationships. Seth has never settled down and has never been with someone for long. They are exes who are thrown into a work competition when Seth shows up out of the blue into Lana's life again after 12 years. Lana has to be single and alone while Seth has to practice commitment. Will they be able to do their job without killing each other or will they forgive each other for the 12 years of heartache?
Let me just say I love Lana. She is so in love with books and Marvel and all things nerdy so I heavily related to her. I mean...she even says "thank Loki" or "thank Thor"! I didn't even know I needed that until I had it in a book. She was so open with her nerdy interests and I love that we are seeing that portrayed in a main female character! Seth was a cutie with his silly, dumb heart on right his sleeve and I loved the easy banter he had with Lana. He was also a respectable gentleman!! One we all deserve!! The love/hate tension was definitely there for these two exes and it made the the competition so much fun. The slow build up was worth it and I will never look at a sunflower again without maybe tearing up a little bit.
Falon Ballard also does an amazing job building her surrounding world and characters. I don't love when writers forget about the best friends, parents, etc. in romances because it makes everything seem unrealistic. I know we are obsessed with love, but someone cannot survive only on romantic love alone. Lana's friends are always beside her throughout her struggles, her spotty relationship with her mother doesn't just disappear, and her therapist is there for a session when crap hits the fan. Another thing I appreciate about Ballard's books is that there is always a sense of working on oneself and the importance of self-care. It's such an important message for young woman, and young kids in general, growing up while reading these books.
I loved a lot about this book, but it only got 4 stars because I didn't find myself as enamored with it as Lease on Love. It's still a lovely written romance, but I had a hard time not comparing the two so realized I like Lease on Love more. I felt like Seth was a little bland and basic hot-boy compared to Jack. A very charming, honorable hot-boy, but a hot-boy nonetheless. I'm also not the biggest fan in general of exes reuniting - I want the strangers spark or the enemies to lovers without previous romantic involvement (but that's on me as the reader and not the author). Lastly, I didn't vibe with the lack of communication because it just drives me crazy, but I know it is a real thing in everyone's lives. I was just spoiled by the spectacular communication between Jack and Sadie in Lease on Love! Again, a lot of these gripes are more on me personally as a reader and not on Falon Ballard as a writer.
Overall, this is definitely a book that will be on my bookshelf and I will absolutely be buying more of Falon Ballards books!
Thank you NetGally and Putnam Books for an early look in exchange for an honest review!
Another cute read from Falon Ballard! It was easy to get sucked into Lana and Seth’s story and I just love the author’s writing style. Thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC!

Book Review:
Just My Type follows Lana Parker, a thirty-year-old journalist who has bounced from long-term relationship to long-term relationship ever since her and her high-school sweetheart, Seth Carson, broke up…12 years ago. After her most current break-up, she is determined to stay single and focus on solely herself, until Seth unexpectedly shows up at her workplace on assignment. What will Lana do when confronted with feelings for her first love that she realizes never really went away?
This book was just so cute and sweet! It definitely gives off How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days vibes. It also had me laughing throughout! The competition between Lana and Seth is quite entertaining! I enjoy it when both main characters have writing careers because I know they have a way with words, and Lana and Seth are no exception. Lana’s journey of realizing who she is and what she wants out of life was a great one to follow. I felt like I related to her in more ways than one.
If you like enemies to lovers, workplace romance, and second chance romance, make sure to pick this up in February 2023!
Holy cannoli, I loved this book so much. I’ve been reading a lot of romances that have fallen flat lately and this has revived my love for the genre. Fallon Ballard is such a talented writer and her characters and banter are *chefs kiss*
Lana, our relationship-prone narrator, is having a “legally blonde” moment in the opening of the book and by that I mean getting dumped by her boyfriend in the middle of a restaurant when she thought he was going to propose.
All of this doesn’t help the situation when Lana, who is a dating/relationship columnist, is pitted against her high school sweetheart, Seth, in a competition to get a new column writing something she actually enjoys. The challenge? Lana has to stay away from a new relationship and Seth has to try to find a lasting relationship. Each gives the other a series of challenges and sparks fly as these two embark on this sweet story of love, self discovery, and second chances.
How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days for 2023. I loved this one so much and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Fallon Ballard. Thank you #netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A fun fairly light read; everything was pretty predictable. I have no complaints other than that there wasn’t a lot of depth to feelings, character, or storyline. They kept pretty much to the surface of all the characters except for a few wanderings into therapy. But it’s well written and engaging, with mostly likable characters, so 4 stars from me.
Just My Type by Falon Ballard was the perfect lovers to exes to enemies to lovers romcom I've read in a long time. Falon's writing is carefree and witty, and I love that even though the storyline was predictable, I had a great time through every page of this book. Lana is a relatable female lead and it was fun to watch her find herself while also accepting who she was and that she didn't need to change. Seth was that heart wrenching one that got away and even though I wanted to hate him like Lana did, I couldn't help but instantly fall in love with him. The dynamic of losing your first love to coming back together years later because while you grew into your own person, you never fell out of love is a delectable trope that I can't get enough of.
This books was amazing!!! It is such a great second chance romance! I will definitely be picking up a physical copy!
Just my type was a great read. I loved the aspect of the competition between Seth and Lana and watching as what was thought to be a one sided rekindled feelings, was actually reciprocated. I loved Seth as a character and could feel both his love and heartbreak for Lana. A detail Falon Ballar added that I also enjoyed in the beginning of each chapter was the quote from one of their previous writing pieces. Thank you to the published and Falon Ballar for the opportunity to be able to read this book, I will be checking out more of her work.
This was a fun book. I really enjoyed the slack conversations between the office staff. The romance was wonderful, but seeing Lana learn to stand up for herself was my favorite part.
Lana Parker is having a bad couple of days. She thinks she’s getting a marriage proposal but she’s really getting dumped. She gets called into work unexpectedly. Not only is she completely hungover, but she also comes face to face with the high school love who dumped her 12 years ago. And he’s vying for the columnist job she wants.
I really enjoyed this book! The chemistry between Lana and Seth is palpable. Falon Ballard writes the dialog and banter in a way that pulls me in and keeps me there. I could have done without the nerdy references. I don’t think they added to the story and didn’t seem in keeping with Lana’s personality. I would have also loved for this to be told as a dual POV. And I wouldn’t have minded more heat, but the love and yearning was definitely there.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for this ARC.
Second-chance romance, yes! This book had so many funny moments in it, that made the slow burn less painful. Slow burns are always rough for me, personally. But, I really enjoyed this!
Ballard really gets the banter that I love about an enemies to lovers trope! Soooo good. Give this book a read, worth it. You will be rooting for the female main character for sure.
