I loved this! While I found this a little unbelievable I was swooning too hard to care! All the right tropes, all the right feelings, maybe too many marvel references. Looking forward to what Ballard puts out next!
This is a very cute book, and the premise is fun, although predictable. The first half of the book moved quickly and was quite enjoyable, but I found the latter half to drag a bit. My main issue was being in Lana's head made her a somewhat annoying and immature character. I love a fun lovers to rivals to lovers book, and second chance romances are usually hit or miss for me. Unfortunately, this book was a bit of a miss because Lana's character was just so subpar.
Throughout the book, Lana comes off as incredibly immature. And while I don't think Seth handled he initial relationship wasn't the best, you could clearly tell his intentions were in the right place; and Lana's continual insistence and portrayal of herself as the victim is incredibly grating, especially considering her situation and how she handled events. She constantly blames other for things she has at least partial responsibility for. While I appreciate her character arc, there is clearly so much more work there to be done and I just simply don't think she's ready for the kind of relationship/commitment implied in the end.
Also the resolution felt rushed and cliche and just overall a tad cringe. I understand as journalists why they chose this medium of communication, but I don't get why they couldn't have just had a conversation with each other and be honest..... Lana's the type of girlie that walks away to try to get the boy to chase after her and I guess this is more acceptable as a YA but as a thirty year old woman.....
Overall this book was relatively fun and I enjoyed the setup, but the FMC was just too annoying for me to fully enjoy this read.
This book dragged for me for most of the book. While I appreciate a second chance romance and liked the pitting the two writers against each other to see who comes out on top at times it felt a little childish. The main character was a little too obsessed with marvel characters, and the obsessive use of “thank Loki” and "Thank Thor" became annoying.
While the friendships in this book did add some great value and comic relief.
I’ve been a fan of this author since Lease on Love, so I was excited to read this book. I loved this second chance rom-com! It is cute, funny and just a delightful way to pass an afternoon. Check it out!
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC!
I will admit it took me a while to even start reading this bc of a book slump. I got to 29% into the book and was not feeling it so I had started a few other things, decided to give it a try again, and ended up enjoying it!
I didn’t love Lana herself but I loved the effort she made to grow and to be better for herself. I also didn’t love all of the marvel references lol but that’s for personal reasons.
I give this a 3.5/5 stars.
I really loved the feel of this one. Kind of like how to lose a guy in 10 days movie which was super fun. It was a quick read and a great romance. I only give 5 stars if I can’t put it down or my jaw drops. It was a good romance read though.
I didn't realize if I downloaded it counted towards feedback....I am so sorry I didn't get a chance to read this book....
The recipe for Just My Type by Falon Ballard starts with a tablespoon of a Legally Blonde Breakup, adds in a healthy pour of how to lose a guy in ten days and then tops all of that with a dash of The Hating Game. To finish it off, you top it with a healthy heap of Love and Other Words and you get the type of book that is ooey gooey sweet and has you invested fully and easily.
Lana, a serial monogamist, finds herself working with her ex Seth, a serial dater. They end up in a not so healthy competition with one another to solve their dating problems, and their careers aren’t the only thing on the line because so are their hearts!
This book was written for you if:
1. You swoon at first love that you can never get over & second chance romance
2. You like a bit of healthy competition between exes with excellent chemistry
3. You liked Love and Other Words or The Hating Game
I loved Lease On Love by this author, and I was really looking forward to this book! And I really enjoyed it! A great romance, and well written. Overall, I would recommend!
I received an e-ARC from the publisher.
Dnf at 35% . Book was not for me. Did not like storyline and did not connect with characters. Was so hopeful after reading and loving authors previous work.
This was a cute second chance romance between exes who become rivals. Honestly it was a fun time even though it was a little unbelievable. I look forward to reading more from this author.
I loved fallons first book but this one fell flat for me, it was entirely predictable from the start and I found Lana whiny and insecure. I thought Seth was a decently written character but i needed something else opposite him.
Thank Thor. Thank Loki. I’ve found a new romance author: Falon Ballard. (Read the book to understand the Marvel references.)
"Just My Type" is Ballard’s sophomore rom-com, and boy, is it a treat. Two former lovers, now journalists, are pitted against each other in a contest to win their dream writing job. Lana, a relationship addict, must learn how to be single, and Seth, a relationship avoider, must learn how to be a boyfriend. A little friendly competition never hurt anyone, right?
Whoever said that should eat their words.
Because feelings are hurt and hearts break over the course of this supposed friendly competition. And the aftermath isn’t pretty. But it's a romance novel, after all. Fans of the genre, we crave the angst.
Though what really makes the book so great is Lana and Seth. Lana is a neurotic pop culture geek who loves all things books and movies, and Seth is refreshingly stable. He’s smart, steadfast, and a perfect foil to Lana’s zaniness. Their chemistry is palpable.
There are two open-door bedroom scenes near the end, so beware if that’s not your thing, and also a whole lot of F-bombs. Why foul language in romance novels is such a trend these days, I don’t know. But keep it in mind if you don’t like the word.
A sweet surprise that "Just My Type" turned out to be just my type of rom-com. I’ll read another from Ballard any day.
My sincerest appreciation to Falon Ballard, PENGUIN GROUP Putnam – G.P. Putnam's Sons, and NetGalley for the digital review copy. All opinions included herein are my own.
The motif of sunflowers is so beautiful and heartfelt, but there is little else tying these two (very roughly drawn) main characters together.
I'm grateful to have been granted an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
I have a lot of *thoughts* and *feelings* about this book. I'll do my best to explain them. But, in summary, I am conflicted and am not sure I liked or would recommend this book.
First and foremost, I love a second chance romance! I enjoyed the dynamic between Lana and Seth and how things escalated. Personally, I find miscommunication to be realistic so I don't mind it in a book. I especially loved the speed dating scene. I actually gasped out loud LOL.
I also appreciated Lana's growth in her career and personal life. That felt genuine, and I was happy for her at the end.
Also, as someone who worked in advertising for 10+ years, there is a lot in this book that seems unbelievable (especially work-wise) but is actually pretty accurate. I don't condone it - just saying the author did a good job writing about a toxic workplace (and it's relatable).
Something I did not enjoy was Lana's obsession with Marvel. It was quirky at first, but it became unbelievable and borderline annoying as the book progressed. I also think this dates the book and makes me less likely to re-read it or recommend it in the future (it's very "of the moment").
Things that I really disliked: Lana holding a grudge against Seth after their reunion. She was in the wrong - not him. Also, the scene in the bar where Lana is pressuring a gay man to kiss her. That was very out of touch.
Just My Type is a fun second chance, enemies to lovers romance that had me laughing out loud quite a few times. Is it a bit predictable? Yes, but it really works for this book. I also loved that we get a lot of Marvel references. I know a lot of people thought it was too much, but it honestly didn't bother me.
Our main character Lana is a relationship columnist, but would love nothing more than to start writing about books, movies, and all other type of entertainment. Things get complicated though when she gets dumped by her boyfriend when she thinks he's about to propose. It seems though that Lana hops from one relationship to the next and has never really been single. While I thought it was a weird thing of her boss to ask, I think it was good for Lana to explore some time alone. I really felt that Lana grew so much and learned a lot about herself while completing tasks for her articles. Her relationship with her mother is complicated and I loved how she stood up for herself and really told her how she felt. Yes, Lana ends up in a relationship, but it really was on her terms.
Seth was an interesting male main character and after a lot of traveling it's time to settle down. We learn more about him and his past and it seems like he also really grew as a character and started thinking about what he really wanted. One thing I do wish is that we got his POV. I'm a romance reader that really thinks dual POVs work best for romances, because I would've loved to have more of his side of the story.
The romance was cute and the banter in the beginning had me laughing. There was some unsettled business between these two and I feel like worked it out as adults. The third act breakup wasn't really a break up, but I love how they solved their conflict. All in all, I definitely recommend this romance.
3.5 stars.
I was definitely drawn to this book because of its How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days vibes, which is an iconic film. Second chance romance is one of my least favorite tropes, but I do love enemies to lovers and enjoyed the tension and bickering between the two leads. I feel like I didn’t quite understand what had made their high school relationship so special or what exactly was so traumatic about their past encounter as adults. I wish their past relationship had been described a little more if it was going to be referenced so much. I also feel like neither main character was super developed and it made it a little hard to connect with them. For a character who was continually talking about her childhood and family, i didn’t feel like I got a good sense of Lana’s past or her dynamic with her mom.
I also know that it is addressed, but in what world would an employer think they can make demands about your sex life. They absolutely should’ve been calling HR. I think the competition wasn’t executed very well and didn’t really make a lot of sense, but honestly that trope usually doesn’t hold up very well if you start poking holes, so I let it go. I enjoyed the chemistry between the leads and I thought the spice was well written, although I could’ve done with more of it! I read this book very fast and I think it’s a good summer read.
Perfect summer read. I'll admit it's predictable, but only in the very best way. There is always something about our first love, isn't it? Great story and even better characters!
This book was hard to put down. I related to the main character in several ways and enjoyed watching her growth through the book.
I do wish this had been dual POV, but the reader still gets an idea of how the male love interest is feeling.
If you like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days you’ll love this book.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Lana does not know life outside of a relationship. After each long-term relationship ends, she jumps into the next one. Her high school ex, Seth, is the complete opposite. He runs from commitment and never gets into anything long term.
Then Seth shows up at Lana’s job and is pitted in a competition against her. Lana must stay single for the duration of the ten-week assignment, and Seth must commit to dating someone seriously and setting down. Will the competition bring them together, or pull them further apart?
I really enjoyed this book. The writing style and characters were so engaging. I loved Lana’s development over the course of the story as she struggles with being alone for the first time in over a decade. I wish there was a bit more pining in between the bickering and the love. If the story was in dual POV so we could get to see Seth’s emotions, it would have made this book go the extra mile. The story still worked well in the end though. Despite never reading Falon Ballard’s debut novel, I was totally hooked by this book and will be going back to read it! I would recommend this book as a quick romance read that focuses more on the competition than the relationship.
