Murder at a Scottish Wedding is Book 4 in the Scottish Shire Mystery series by Traci Hall.
This was a great book and I love the setting in Scotland.
It's what I have been waiting for, Lydia and Corbin are getting married.
Unfortunately, one of Corbin's cousins dies. There is a great amount of mystery here, not just the death. Curses, multiple mysteries, a very dysfunctional family make this a fantastic read.
There are twists, red herrings, and romance that I really enjoyed.
Murder at a Scottish Wedding, the fourth book in the Scottish Shire series, comes out January 31st. I was able to read an ARC thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books. This book was outstanding. It had a lot of tension and high stakes and I was honestly frantically turning pages for the last 30% of the book at least. Not only was the main mystery engrossing because Paislee’s dear friend Lydia may be in danger, but the overarching plotline of Paislee’s grandpa and his worries about his son Craigh also brings a lot of intensity. I know that cozy mysteries always end up OK, so I think it’s impressive when an author can keep me on the edge of my seat.
This series has all the required elements that cozy mystery fans demand: a plucky small business owner, a lovely group of friends/family, a charming small town, and an adorable cozy companion. But it also has extra heart that makes it just that bit more special to me. Paislee is trying to do her best as a mom, as a granddaughter, and as a friend, not to mention as a business owner. Some of the mom moments she has touch very close to home for me, especially since my child is close to the age of Paislee’s son. I am 100% invested in Paislee’s journey and can’t wait to read more in the series. Don’t even get me started on my anxieties about her potential love life! I look forward to seeing where this series goes next.
Lydia knows her fiance Corbin's family doesn't like her but strychnine on a brooch? Weddings stir up a lot of emotion but this one takes the case. The family heirloom brooch goes missing on the morning of the wedding and then it's found in the clutches of Felicity, who has fallen down the steps of the church and broken her neck. Paislee, our intrepid amateur detective, and Lydia set out to find the villain - and they find more! And then there's Paislee's grandfather, who knows more about Craigh than he's willing to share. Two mysteries in one! I've been a fan of this series for the characters (even the little dog Wallace) and this latest added more dimensions but don't worry if you're new to it- it will be fine as a standalone. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A very good cozy read.
Recently went to Scotland so I was keen to read this and it did not disappoint! Thank you for letting me read this book!
Setting the Scene: A cursed brooch, a wedding postponed, an untimely death, a dominating family. Lydia begins to wonder if the alleged curse is true. Paislee finds herself supporting her best friend through a maelstrom of events, only to be confronted with her own set of problems involving her grandfather, his missing illegitimate son, and the enigmatic Detective Zeffer. Betrayal may be the operative word.
What I thought: This was a delightful read with relatable characters. Paislee and Lydia have the friendship all women want, and Grandpa and the knitters provide just the right amount of quirkiness. The 4 star rating, as opposed to a 5 star, is because of three things: (i) There were a few parts of the story that seemed to drag a bit; (ii) Paislee's refusal to even consider a relationship gets tiresome; and (iii) the good detective may be a bit too enigmatic. Nonetheless, there was plenty of intrigue, complete with red herrings and sub-plots, to keep me going, not to mention the potential for resolution to at least 2 of those issues. The book left me wanting more, in a very good way.
The next installment of the Scottish Shire mystery series finds Paisley being the maid of honor at her best friend, Lydia's, wedding. Things take a turn though when first a brooch goes missing and then a cousin of the groom dies under mysterious circumstances. Lydia's future mother-in-law had been saying that the wedding was cursed, but Paislee thinks foul play is at foot instead. She must investigate so that Lydia can have her happily ever after. At the same time, the story line about Craigh (her uncle) from the previous books also comes to a head.
Another great entry! I'm intrigued to see where things go from here as it seems like there will be a shift to focus more on Paislee's potential love life instead of the drama with her Grandpa now that that is resolved.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
👰Bride faces an army of hostile Smythes😕
There's plenty going on in this story set in northern Scotland with two major mysteries, both of them bringing danger into the lives of small business owner Paislee Shaw and her little family. Paislee is the amateur sleuth and she puts her business on the backburner to help her BFF Lydia in this volume in the Scottish Shire series. Loved the Scottish small town setting.
Lydia's ill-fated wedding, with the suspicious death of a member of the groom's huge, privileged Smythe family before the ceremony gets underway, is at the heart of this unpredictable cozy murder mystery. A huge wedding, a missing heirloom attached to the death and an army of potential suspects. And a bride who just can't please the groom's family at any turn and fears one of them has deadly intent to stop the marriage.
Added to this, Paislee's grandfather is stuck in the middle of an investigation of his missing and on-the-run son Craigh. Grandpa Angus is a bit of a character, constantly evading interviews with the police and walking a fine line to protect his son. But he's grown so integral to Paislee and her son Brody's household and the family moments are some of the best parts of the story for me, especially Paislee's talks with her maturing eleven year-old.
With so many characters I had no strong guesses about the identity of the culprits; I just felt that it had to be a member of the groom's family and read along until the reveal. Lots of red herrings, friction and odd incidents keep the story rolling to a dramatic climax. Even brave little Scottie Wallace gets his moment of heroism.
I liked it but, frankly, had trouble keeping all of those Smythe's straight in my mind🙁.
Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
I will leave a review on Jan. 24th on Amazon and B&N
Murder at a Scottish Wedding by Traci Hall is the fourth book in the Scottish Shire Mystery series. A cosy that is set in Scotland, starts off at the wedding that doesn't happen. A death follow, along with lots of accusations that makes it hard to determine whom the culprit is. Overall I found this to be a good read, although I didn't enjoy it as much as previous books in the series. I would recommend this book to others.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Kensington Books. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is book 4 in the series, and a great look at Scottish traditions and the havoc they can cause when it comes to weddings and dysfunctional families, and nothing brings out family dysfunction like a wedding, doesn't it? LOL Paislee is in true form- keeping her son and grandfather in line, running her business, sharing mysteries with friends and helping the police solve local problems. This is an enjoyable read and if you haven't started the series yet, a good place to jump into it!
Traci Hall is one of my favorite authors. This cozy mystery was a delight with more than enough twists and turns. Paislee Shaw is preparing for her friend's wedding and chaos and murder ensues. I loved all the drama in this book. And we get two mysteries in this one. Highly recommend this series with a Scottish touch.
Well, Traci Hall has done it again! I was privileged to read an advanced copy from NetGalley of the newest Scottish Knitting Mystery. I just love the Shaw family and their friends. In this installment, Paislee and Grandpa must help solve two mysteries, who is trying to stop Lydia from marrying Corbin, and what happened to Paislee’s Uncle Craigh? This book reads quickly as you won’t want to put it down! You willl feel transported to Nairn, so pack you bags and get ready for an adventure!
I have been sucked into the series and with a bit Scottish in my heritage it's been a fun read with charming, enjoyable characters that leave you looking forward to the next one Author definitely keeps you on your toes with the vast amount of characters and entanglements, but sometimes that's the most interesting part for me.
I bet you quickly find yourself reading with a Scottish accent, ye ken? Understand? Seriously, although I found myself hesitating initially as I ran across the phonetically written Scottish phrases, without knowing it, I picked up on them quickly and it flowed nicely. All was guid.
The plot, well, the main plot, revolves around the question of "Who poisoned the brooch that killed Felice?" A secondary plot, which I felt might make a solid, separate book itself, dealt with main character Paislee's missing uncle and his involvement with either Scotland Yard or a deadly criminal gang of thieves, or maybe both. It remained fuzzy until the end. This side-plot rather threw me at first as it seemed like in the blink of an eye we were taken from pondering who and how the heirloom brooch that ultimately caused Felice's death was poisoned to DI Zeffer appearing and questioning Paislee and her grandfather about not just Felice's death but the whereabouts of the long missing uncle. In this case, I might have benefited from reading previous books in the series although this was only a momentary issue. Dinnae fret. It is all explained as we go along.
There's a long list of suspects, including a mega-superstitious almost-mother-in-law of Paislee's best friend Lydia, who has taken a strong dislike to Lydia, and a fortune telling librarian. Was it an accident or sabotage that caused Lydia's car to wreck? Who left the threatening photos and message in Lydia's apartment? Family ties are strong, both in Lydia's real and almost family, as well as Paislee's bonds and loyalty to her own and love for her son. And, yikes. Explosions?
Cannae tell you more, sairy. You're just going to have to read the book. Although I found it a bit disconcerting to switch between two such strong story lines, they are both interesting and, nae, didn't guess whodunit though the clues were all there. Despite this, I liked the story and will most definitely be back. Treats for Wallace the Scottish terrier!
Thanks #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks for letting my latent Scottish ancestry flourish for a bit with this nod tae/to Scotland and the accent. Loved that the author wrote this during the planning for her own wedding.
NOTE: Some words are written phonetically to convey Scottish accents; contains some cursing.
Lovely Lydia was minutes away from marrying handsome and wealthy Corbin Smythe. But Corbin's shrew of a stepmother claimed an antique pin must be worn (by Lydia) on the family tartan colors or they couldn't be wed.
Unfortunately for many, the pin (brooch) was missing until a member of the wedding party stumbled out of the church, fell down the stairs, and broke her neck; the pin clutched in her hand!
Thus began a nightmare for the family, the wedding postponed, and suspicious circumstances. Inspector Payne is happy to receive tips and information about the theft and death, but he certainly does not "work" with civilians.
On another subject but of larger scope, DI Zeffer and the matron of honor, Paislee, will begin to demonstrate their skills of deduction and observation. They must find Paislee's uncle and why he has been missing, before Scotland Yard or a group of killers can!
This was an entertaining but convoluted story with a penchant for melodrama, with two simultaneous storylines. There is much to surprise the reader; at one point my jaw hung open.
It is a bit messy, and the list of characters is very long, but the charming phonetic Scottish accent carried me through.
4/5 Stars
Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the temporary digital preview of this book; any review is voluntary, and completely my own opinion.

The fourth title in this series finds Paislee getting ready to share her best friend's wedding day. Lydia is marrying Corbin, the son of a prestigious family and Paislee is the matron of honor. When Lydia prepares to attach a special brooch to her gown she discovers it's missing and a search ensues. Just as she prepares to walk down the aisle sans brooch her fiancee's cousin falls down the church steps, breaking her neck. When the fall is later declared murder Lydia begs Paislee to find the guilty party. Corbin's family has been less than welcoming to Lydia and his stepmother says the marriage was cursed.
At the same time Paislee is worried about her Grandfather's search for his missing son who is being hunted by Scotland Yard.
The two plot threads make for an interesting, fast-paced story with lots of excitement. It's also an opportunity to catch up with Brody, Paislee's 11 year-old son and the two potential love interests Paislee keeps at arm's length.
Thanks to Kensington Publisher and NetGalley for making a return trip to Nairn possible.
The murder investigation involves
This was my first book in what is a series. It was an interesting story but I did find all the Scottish terms made reading a bit slow. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an early readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoy this series and trips back to Scotland. Lydia and Corbin are finally getting married. This should be the happiest day of Lydia's life. Guess being happy won't happen as a cousin of Corbins dies before the ceremony even gets started.
Is the Luckenbooth brooch really cursed or is someone out to hurt Lydia? Can you say dysfunctional family? That would be Corbins family.
Grandpa has been acting rather strange. DI Zeffer has reappeared with some interesting information on grandpa's son Craigh.
How much can Paislee handle between Lydia's non wedding and the information she has learned about Craigh?
Drama, strange family relationships, curses, missing family, danger will keep you intrigued as you read. Red herrings and plenty of twists and turns.
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to read this book.
This has been the most exciting of the Scottish Shire Mystey series and the most emotional, by far. What should have been the happiest day of her life has become a living nightmare for Paislee’s bestie, Lydia. Was it a cursed Luckenbooth brooch or is someone out to hurt Lydia any way they can. You know a book is good when you find yourself holding your breath as you turn the pages and making audible comments on the behavior of some people/characters. As if a wrecked wedding isn’t bad enough, Grandpa is acting strangely and DI Zeffer finally has some startling information about Grandpa’s son Craigh. The story is a stand-alone, plenty of background is given so that you are familiar with all of the characters, but you will probably want to go back and read the others as well. It’s funny, I can read the words and hear the Scot accent in my head but for the life of me, I cannae speak it (LOL).
I found myself wrapped up in this story early on, this particular story had several different twists, which I enjoyed.
Paisley Shaw is preparing for her best friends wedding, however, things don't go to smoothly and the wedding is called off.
The characters in this series are quite likable and each book shows me a different side of one of them.
I'm happy to recommend this series to all cozy mystery fans.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I didn’t really enjoy this book. It is a typical cozy mystery. My major complaint is some of the dialogue. There were many Scottish terms that I had to reread in order to understand them. From the title of the book, I was expecting more about the investigation into the murder that happened at the wedding. No, it was more about the disappearance of the main character’s uncle, a totally different story line. The murder at the wedding was more of an afterthought. I was really disappointed in this book.
