Very interesting mystery. It was very interesting to see the perspective of the main character, a veteran (French) who had served in the First World War as the Second World War was beginning. It was a unique perspective and one I’ve personally, as an American, never thought of so I really appreciated that the book opened up my mind in a new way. Very good book - semi vulgar during brief bits mentioning prostitution but they are just brief mentions. Good book overall.

I am a huge fan of the Hugo Marston series so I was excited to try this new one by Mark Pryor. I am also a huge fan of WWII, particularly those set in areas with regular people rather than action on the front. Henri Lefort is a fascinating character and I can’t wait to get to know more about him and his friends. The mystery was well paced and definitely had me guessing until the very end. The sessions with his friend/psychiatrist were intriguing and bonus points for conversations with Pablo Picasso. Highly recommended!

I quite literally read this in one day, that’s how good it is. It’s historical fiction and a detective novel rolled into one. I loved the main character, Paris detective Henri Lefort. It’s July 1940 and Germany has recently occupied Paris. Lefort is given a seemingly impossible task: figure out who killed a German officer at the Louvre, and do it in five days. Or else! Although the main action takes place during WW2, we get a lot of Henri’s backstory during WW1. Along with completely fictional characters, we get some real people too, such as the great Pablo Picasso and Princess Marie Bonaparte. Be prepared for a number of twists! I do hope this becomes a series. Don’t miss this book.

I bounced between the audiobook and the ebook for this title, which was very convenient and a major reason I finished it so fast. The audiobook is beautifully narrated by P.J. Ochlan.

Thank you to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy of this book and to Tantor Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to an advance copy of this audiobook. All opinions are my own.

it was amazing

Great read! A solid murder investigation while under duress from the occupiers of France. This is the same enemy that the people of France (with help from Allies) defeated in the 1914 war, back again and even more vile. The diligence is meticulous even though the detective is being told who to name and is under personal threat. Several historical personages make meaningful appearances in the story and there is a convoluted story within a story. The publisher's blurb is a sneaky hook but effective. Don't miss this one!
I requested and received a free e-book copy from St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

8/15/2022 Now I have the audio from Tantor Audio via NetGalley and it's even better being narrated by well qualified voice actor P.J. Ochlan. It's so much nicer hearing French accents and pronunciations.

Thank you so much to Tantor Books for the chance to listen to and review this audiobook prior to release.

I went into this one pretty blind and it caught my attention right away! The main character was fun and had a lot of good one-liners that made me laugh, a very unique sense of humor for sure.

I loved that the author included some famous people in the story such as Picasso and Freud! It made it a little more interesting!

The pace was pretty consistent and there were a couple surprises I didn't expect at all!

The narrator took me a little bit to get used to but once I did, I really enjoyed his voice!

This book will be available for sale on August 16th

Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for my review copy of DIE AROUND SUNDOWN by Mark Pryor in exchange for an honest review! This one publishes Tuesday, August 16!

I actually was able to listen to this one, thanks to netgalley! I listens to it in a day, while doing other chores and driving! It was a great book to listen to in the background!

I don’t think I have read many, or any at all, Haiti eco fiction books that also involve solving a murder! It was fun! Did I figure out who actually committed the crime? Nope! So I was pleasantly surprised!

What I really sniffed the most, was the setting! This book takes place in Paris during world war 2. It mentions the Louvre, which I have actually been to! I was able to picture it while reading, which enhance my reading experience!

If you enjoy historical fiction novels with a murder mystery, if you have read and enjoyed any of Mark Pryor’s previous books, I recommend this one! It’s the first in a new series!
