An interesting work of historical fiction, well worth reading. Set in Jersey, the Chanel Islands during WWII, the story centers on two sisters, Alice and Jenny. Alice is a nurse, while Jenny is following in her father’s footsteps loving Math and hoping to go to Cambridge. In the midst of war, the Islands were basically forfeited to the Germans, resulting in hardship and fear. Each sister will enter relationships as they try to mend their own and regain the closeness they had as young girls, while coping with the horrors of war. I recommend this book, and thank NetGalley for the ARC.
I don’t know anything about the Jersey Islands and had no clue the Germans invaded them and did a prisoner transport.
Two sisters have very different war experiences and the novel illustrates the difficulties each endured.
This book sheds light on a little known part of WWII.
This book focuses on the Robinson family, specifically sisters Alice and Jenny, and they navigate pre-war and WW2 Jersey (Channel Island). Both sisters face their own challenges leading up to and during the war. Alice is a nurse, navigating her hatred of the Germans with also fulfilling her job as a nurse. Jenny navigates finishing up school and having her post-school plans go up in the air with the threat of the war coming to their island.
I thought this book was good. I like to read about stories taking place in Jersey because it seems like a unique area during the war.
I received a copy of it from Netgalley.
Historical fiction readers will enjoy this story about the two sisters during WWII in Jersey. It's hard to imagine two sisters being so different. Each served a purpose during the war; Alice, a nurse and Jenny a translator for the resistance. The story started out rather slow but held my attention as it developed. Interesting.
Indulge me - I so enjoy the historical fiction genre. No, I don’t read it exclusively or even the majority of the time, but enough that I go back every now and then for another taste. Thank you NetGalley and Gill Thompson for this wonderful read with some unknown to me background.
I had no idea that British citizens were deported from German occupied parts of the UK during WWII. Did you? Were you aware that they were interred in camps in Germany, some of them for years? Neither did I. So was the case with one of the main characters, Alice. That checks off one of the really great things about reading historical fiction - you learn some interesting tidbit.
Both our main characters. Alice and Jenny, were strong and accomplished beyond their time and place. Alice a nurse and Jenny a gifted mathematician turned resistance member. Both believable and relatable characters trying to hold onto some normalcy in and out of kilter world. Check mark number two. - well-drawn real to life people.
Does this book tie itself up in a neat bow at the end? No! Because of a less than happily ever after ending, it is a true to life ending. I appreciate that occasionally. I think you will too.
In the Lighthouse Sisters, Gill Thompson takes the reader to the island of Jersey just before and during WWII. Alice and Jenny are two sisters who are as different as they can be. Alice is kind and practical. She has trained as a nurse and works in the hospital on Jersey. Jenny, like her dad, is excellent in math and has her head full of theorems and formulas. She is studying so she can go to Cambridge. War with Germany changes everything.
See how each sister fights back in her own way, and finds her own dreams. I was able to read this book on #NetGalley.
This book. It took me through so many emotions! The Lighthouse Sisters explores many complexities that the Channel Islanders faced during the Second World War. The book follows two sisters, their family, and the men they love through their war experience. Each had to sacrifice and each had high and low points.
What I appreciated most was how delicately Gill Thompson treated some of the most horrific facts of the war. She didn’t use overt explicit detail, but wrote in a way that showed the gravity of the atrocities her characters suffered. I would recommend this book to a teenager, and I don’t always choose to recommend war books to that audience.
Content warning: Death happens often and premarital is implied. Absolutely nothing is explicit, but the consequences are also explained.
I received an Advance Readers Copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
based on true events, in 1940 the Nazis seized control of the island of Jersey, could not put it down read in one day..
This story is about never giving up especially if its something that you really want to do in life.
It's about having to go through certain things and events to get there. A thing called life's journey and the choices that we make. Sometimes its definitely tough.
It's about dealing with tough subjects.
and the things we learn from them.
I liked this book well enough.
It kept me engaged throughout the story and I liked Alice and Jenny.
I didn't care for the mean one called Sarah. There was no absolute reason to be mean like that. Too bad the tables weren't turned on her. Seems like mean people do tend to get away with everything.
I did like the Lighthouse and that was the sole reason I chose the book. The cover was so inviting!
The author did do a good job of giving us a look at occupied Germany and what life mightve been like living there.
The descriptions were real enough and I found myself looking up Jersey and a few other things so I felt that he did a good job of making me feel like I was there.
5 stars for a job well done. I highly recommend!
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
For readers who loved the Nightingale, this book will captivate you from page one. Two sisters (Alice and Jenny) and their family are living a good life on the Jersey Island in the 1940's. With the onset of WWII, the island is taken over by the German Army and their lives are changed forever. Alice is faced with her growing attraction to a German Soldier while Jenny gives up a promising future as a mathematician . What each sister does to survive and help out their friends and family will keep the reader engaged to the last page. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more of this author's works.
Two sisters Alice and Jenny and their brother William live a wonderful life with their friends and family on one of the channel islands. Jenny is smart in math and takes after her father and Alice is loving and caring just like her mother. There brother William is different. They have to constantly worry about him as he isn't the type to show any emotions or be in the family. Today we would know that he is on the Autism Spectrum but back before WWII this was not something that was known.
The people on the island know that there is a threat of war and are concerned but don't think anything will happen on their little island. How wrong could one be. The war affected everyone and their lives change in dramatic ways..
Along with these characters we have the supporting group Pip who Alice is in love with but who is totally in love with Jenny. As the story continues we see the war and what happens to each of the characters throughout the story.
This story is full of love, laughter and the horrors of war. At times it is not easy to read and like real life not all of the characters will live happily ever after but the book itself is a wonderful accounting of what happened in real life. I recommend this book to anyone who loves history and the characters who were a part of it.
I received this book from Netgalley and was given a chance to read it for a full and honest review.
The Lighthouse Sisters is a heart warming and heart breaking novel that tells the tale of two sisters during the German invasion and occupation of The Channel Islands on the island of Jersey. The two main characters are sisters Jenny and Alice Robinson, whom are vastly different from one another, but have one major thing in common: they must survive the occupation.
Alice and Jenny will experience so much through the war. The darkness of death, the light of life, the joys of love, the agony of separation, the pains of hunger, the fear of the occupation and the strong will to survive. The author does a great job at showing the obvious differences between the sisters and showing their unique experiences during the story. A forbidden love blossoms for one sister while a neglected love turns to a regret for another. The Robinson family will sacrifice so much for each other and their loved ones and it makes one wonder: what would I do had it been me in their shoes? I love a good novel that makes you dig deep into your thoughts like that.
The author, Gill Thompson, also does a great job at showing what life was like in German Occupied Jersey during the War, which is not a commonly written about location for World War II. Though this is fiction, I found the historical accuracy to be accurate and I learned some things I did not know about Jersey.
