I really like Chenoweth, but I've never read any of her books. This one did feel like you were chatting with her as she was sharing her stories. It is definitely religious in nature, so readers should know that going into the book. This is a quick, easy, and enjoyable read (and you may find yourself reading it in her voice!)
I adore Kristin Chenoweth and while reading this book I found myself reading it in her voice! While yes it was heavy on the religious talk, the messages she was sharing were solid and worth sharing. I enjoyed this read and I’ll for sure be recommending it when it comes out!
A sweet memoir/mini devotional, loaded with even parts sassy and sentimental stories, Ms. Chenoweth's "Thoughts" really make ya think, you know? Personally, I loved it and read it cover to cover in no time. If you've got serious issues with Christianity, you probably won't like the amount of God talk or Bible verses, but I think it struck the right balance for those of us who don't mind at all!
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Kristin Chenoweth and the publisher for the Advance Copy - all thoughts and opinions are my own and freely given!
“From television actress, Broadway star, and New York Times bestselling author Kristin Chenoweth comes I’m No Philosopher, But I Got Thoughts, an inspiring high-design, colorful book featuring philosophical-ish musings on connection, creativity, loss, love, faith, and closure.”
Full Disclosure: I’m this book’s target audience. I’m a 44 year old, female, Christian, theatre devotee.
I’m a girl who can belt out Memories (tho’ I skew less Glinda and more Elphaba) and while I’m annoyed 90% of the time by 85% of His creation, I love me some Jesus.
Because of the above, (and because my brain helpfully provided her distinctive voice) this book was a fairly good time.
Did I find it hard to pigeonhole this work? Yes.
Did I find the collection of essays mildly disjointed? Yes.
Did I enjoy it, anyhow? Also, yes.
Part memoir, part self-help workbook, part Book of (un)Common Prayer, I really appreciated her philosophy of “Eating the fish, without choking on the bones.”
While I understand that many will find her prayers hard to relate to, I think, with a little tweaking, her meditations could work for most.
7/10
Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Celebrate for this diversion of an ARC.
Are you a Kristin Chenoweth fan? Do you love America's sweetheart? Look no further! Chenoweth inspires and uplifts with prayers, quotes, and personal stories. This is excellent for any fans of Kristin. Highly recommended!
This book is a perfect mix of faith, humor, honesty, and fun. It felt like spending time with a friend.
This was a really interesting read. There were many nuggets from Kristin's wide ranging career from stage and screen. It was written in such a way it was like she was sitting in front of you telling you the stories herself. The one thing I did not like about this book was the heavy Christian themes and many quotes from The Bible. I am not religious and am unsure if I had picked up this book I knew about the large amount of Christianity within it. None the less this was an enjoyable read and I would love to hear more of Kristin's stories.
I'm no Philosopher, but a I've got thoughts is part advice part pep talk part journal as Chenoweth shares her thoughts on everything from screwing up, to forgiveness, to friendship. The book is filled with stories from Chenoweth's own life alongside cute lists and quotes and pie charts that sun up her thoughts on each area of life.
While this type of book isn't generally for me and I would have preferred a little more personal narrative and real life examples, I think Chenoweth succeeded at what she set out to do by creating a fun uploading book with a lot of heart and something pretty much anyone can learn from, even a cynical skeptic like me.
Thank you for this book. I love Kristin Chenoweth and this book lets her personality shine. I wish it had just a bit more content. The inspirational and prayer pages were good and the stories were interesting. But in my opinion, it jumped around a bit and didn’t seem to be cohesive.
I do love Kristin Chenoweth, and you could hear her voice in every word of this little book.
I honestly don't know what I was expecting, but it was not that much praying. But underneath all that, there is still a lot of positive attitude and wisdom to soak up, even if you don't share her religion, and at the end of it, I smiled and laughed, contemplated and pondered, and felt like I had a nice long chat with a good friend. So while there might not be a lot of content, more like a few snippets from her life with lessons she learned from it, I enjoyed it.
This book was a quick and easy read. It had lots of colorful graphics on the pages, and there were some prompts to encourage you to do further introspection after reading. Chenoweth writes as if speaking to a friend, without blustering or lots of unnecessary words. The story is divided into chapters. I would recommend this book for fans of her work.
Haha I absolutely loved reading this! I usually don’t care much for memoirs but this one was hilarious and I loved it!
My favorite thing about this book was when Kristin writes about her adoption story. I am a mom through adoption and I knew she had been adopted so I wanted to read this latest book. It's a short and free flowing book with lists and stories and quotes mixed in with her thoughts. Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy!
I'll be honest... this one disappointed me. I adore Kristin and will read all of her books and always support her but this collection fell flat. Kristin is so witty, fun and funny, with so much life experience so I was expecting a full- tour-de-force of amazing advice. (spoiler alert: I didn't quite get it).
This was a quick little book with versions of the cover art inside (& I do adore the cover art). Most of the advice were religious and in prayer format. Otherwise, there were lists and bullet points. I don't mind a modge-podge and artistic designs for books but for such a short book to be made up of mostly repeated art and lists, I wasn't a huge fan.
Arianna Grande wrote the introduction which was a huge win and she had many kind things to say.
Overall, not quite what I expected or hoped for but I will always give Kristin another chance.
I like Kristin and her energy so I requested this book as soon as I saw it. It was a quick, easy read but not quite what I was expecting. Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
I am a very big fan of Kristin Chenoweth, however, this book was just not right for me. The ARC was difficult to read. The print for some of the text was so light, I could hardly see to read it. I felt as if I was reading a book with extremely thin pages and was trying to read the text on the following page.
That being said, I felt this book was not her typical funny Kristin. I'm sure others will find the religious text to be enlightening, but it seemed random to me. Love her other books, just not a fan of this one.
I'm a big Kristin Chenoweth fan, but just couldn't quite follow this book. I enjoyed the tidbits of knowledge and humor peppered throughout the way, but the organization of the book felt well, disorganized, and difficult to read. For something as significant as philosophy to be in the title, I suppose I was expecting a big more substance rather than lighthearted, airy notions.
Kristin Chenoweth is hilarious as usual. We get a look at her life and how it has shaped her through the years. I didn't so much like all the Christianity she weaves throughout, but that is who she is. There is humor and wisdom here. It is more just like random musings throughout the book, but it's funny, like she is.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
I love Kristin Chenoweth and really enjoyed her other book. This is more like random musings than a biography and it reads like a stream of consciousness. I found it quite difficult to read and I think you'd have to be a really hardcore fan to enjoy it. It reads more as a series of tweets than a book.
Thank you NetGalley, Harper Celebrate, and Kristin Chenoweth for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! I’m a fan of Kristin and Wicked so I was excited to read this one! However, I’m sad to say that I didn’t really enjoy it…
I was expecting some funny and relatable anecdotes and meditations and, while there are some in here, there’s also a large amount of Christianity-based prayers and stories. I grew up Christian and I thought that what she said was interesting, it was just a little too heavy on the religious parts for me personally. However, I know many people who will love this one and it would be great for Christians looking to learn more and strengthen their faith! It just wasn’t what I expected.
I’m glad I read this one though and it’s a gorgeous book with beautiful colors ant insights into her life. If you’re looking for a mixture of life stories, religion, and Broadway, this is the book for you.
