Very pretty book. Am I going to be rocking the smoky look to the PTA meeting? Yeah no but COULD I after this book? Probably not but not at the fault of the author. The author is amazing at explaining the steps and how to use them in practical ways. I just am not great at fancy makeup.
This was a really cool book to read, and written for those of us who are interested in learning more beauty tips and tricks, as this book is full of them. Scott Barnes is a well known makeup artist, so I was excited to read about his work and his advice for doing different styles of makeup. A lot of my questions about makeup were answered as a result of me reading this book, like what is the best way to apply base makeup, and how to create a smoky eye. That being said, this book is slightly outdated as it was published back in 2012, which I wish was made more clear when this book became available to request.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me access to this book.
This is a perfect guide for those new to make up and also those who want to change up their look. It has amazing advice for a wide variety of scenarios and settings from work to play. It is a vibrant and beautiful book with high quality and gorgeous photographs.
I picked up this book because it was written by none other than Scott Barnes, the king of contour and the creator of J-Lo’s glow. I had followed his YouTube channel for ages, and I wasn’t aware that he was writing an upcoming book.
Unfortunately, my excitement was short-lived, as I found out that this book was originally written and published in 2012. I had my suspicions after a glimpse of some of the contents.
Not sure if this was intended to be republished for a 10-year anniversary edition, but if that was the case, it should’ve been called out clearly in order not to confuse the readers. The book would also benefit from some content uplift, as a lot of the advices and makeup looks were quite outdated.
Aside from the age of the book, the format of the chapters itself was a mix between Tips & Tricks and Glamour Lookbook, which I found quite jarring as they didn’t transition to each other at all. It felt a bit like a mash of two different books.
Last but not least, as a longtime subscriber of Scott, there was nothing new in the book that I hadn’t seen on his channel.
A lovely coffee table book with beautiful celebrity transformation photographs, but not very helpful to everyday regular people in regards to makeup application. I thank Netgalley and Quarto Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This book was very interesting. I liked looking into the celebrity aspect of makeup and loved seeing teh transformation. They were so much fun.
But the best part is when the author gives practical applications so I can copy looks.
There are some beautiful photos of a number of different make up looks with hints and tips on how to copy them. I don’t know who some of the people who are in this book and would have liked a few more close up photos of the specific looks but it’s a great book
I'm sorry but I can't really recommend this book. I read it as an ARC and was really confused as I read it as it feels so dated and the celebrities are so 2010. I finally flipped back to the copyright and found that the book was published in 2012 and is being released as by a new publisher in paperback now.
Besides the dated feel, this isn't really a how-to book. It's pictures of celebrity clients/friends done up in various makeup looks. He tells a general bit of how he did the look like he swept brown shadow on and chose to do a nude lip, but there are no step-by-step photos or real tutorials. He tells you what items he used for the makeup but they are mostly expensive brands and are likely not even made anymore. It feels like a vanity project for the author and his celebrity friends. I was disappointed.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book via Net Galley.
Beautiful color photographs showing the transformations. Tips on skin care, hair care, and makeup.
This is a good book for inspiration for MUA's, and anyone wanting to improve their makeup skills.
Thank you for the ARC Netgalley!
