Five stars are not enough.
This is an excellent addition to the Nikki Hunt series. I read it in one sitting, a page-turner I couldn’t put down. Author Stacy Green once again knocks it out of the park. Highly recommended.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Her Frozen Heart, the sixth novel to feature Special Agent Nikki Hunt of the FBI’s Minnesota office.
When a fisherman discovers the body of a young woman in a frozen lake on Christmas Eve he recognises her immediately as Kesha Williams, a seventeen year old who disappeared a month earlier from a shopping mall. Sheriff Miller asks Nikki to consult, because where she was found, a remote lake miles from her home and the mall, seems to rule out Kesha’s boyfriend, the only suspect. When another grave is found nearby Nikki and her team are hunting a serial killer.
I thoroughly enjoyed Her Frozen Heart, which is an engrossing read with several twists and turns. It is mostly told from Nikki’s point of view with a couple of chapters from the unnamed killer’s childhood. I’m never very interested in fictional killers’ backgrounds as there is only so much that an author can say and little that hasn’t been said before. In this case it works well as it’s only a couple of chapters and serves to highlight specific incidents that have a bearing on the present.
I found the story to be quite compulsive in the way it expands from one murder to several. I must admit that I guessed the killer’s identity quite early in the novel, so there was the added incentive of getting to the end to see if I was right and to get an idea of the motive, which turned out to be underwhelming. The journey to get there, however, was good. The serial killer investigation is joined by a disappearance in an adjoining county and while no one knows if they are linked the local police department is playing politics and involving the media. This seems very current, but it’s stressful for the reader as they are blaming Nikki for their shortcomings. The finale of the novel is the usual flurry of explanations and action with Nikki in the thick of it. It’s more stress for the reader, who, by this time, is involved in her investigation leavened only by the relief of a confession.
It is nice to spend time with Nikki and her team, but with her usual sidekick, Liam, on the injury list and her daughter, Lacey, out of state this is very much the Nikki Hunt show. She’s running herself ragged to solve the case.
Her Frozen Heart is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
From the very first book I’ve been gripped by this series and this, number 6, is no less engrossing.
It’s winter, there’s ice and snow, and there’s murders. Sounds like repetition but actually it’s yet another great read in this excellent series. The man plot is a fast paced murder mystery set at Christmas in sub zero temperatures and very gruesome murders. In addition to the murder mystery there’s lots of interesting facts, like ice fishing and who knew you can buy body bags on Amazon (trust me you can, I checked, I’m just waiting now for the targeted advertisements 😂). The developments in the subplot are also excellent and maybe I smell a whiff of some future family disagreements, with a new addition there, or maybe it’s just Christmas tension. A another great addition to this excellent series.
This series has kept me hooked from the very first book. Each one gets better and better. That's not saying the first one is any less great than number six. This whole series is great. You get to know Nikki Hunt completely. From her first case to this one. You follow her career after the loss of her parents' brutal murder. Why she decided to become a FBI agent.
This book had me on the edge of my seat so many times. It's so intense and even a bit scary in parts. Not like a horror story but just what it is, a true thriller. You'll be guessing who the murderer is and most likely you will be wrong. I did figure it out but I think because I read so many thrillers it gives an advantage. Or I just related to this book that much. When this murderer was introduced I held my breath. I just didn't trust this person. But it's so well written that that did not in any way take away from this story for me. This book is truly great.
Stacy Green takes you through the freezing snow and ice discovering new leads. Finding new bodies. Trying to figure out who the serial killer is. She is good at her job. No one can touch her in the ways that she does things. While in her personal life she has a few things going on. Her daughter and her boyfriend. Both mean a lot to her and there is nothing she won't do for her daughter. You will love her and Rory, Nikki's boyfriend. He's a great guy as is his family. At first his family was a bit standoffish to Nikki. Because of her, in a way, their other son did time in prison for her parents' murder. They did finally come around though and love Nikki and Lacey very much. Lacey is Nikki's daughter.
This book is set in the freezing cold state of Minnesota. You will feel the freezing bitter cold. The fear in the description of the first girl this killer took. The anger Nikki feels when she finally does know who this killer is. How things unfold and how this killer is taken down. You get a look at how things really happen in this type of case. So much research goes into writing and this author did not disappoint in any way. I hope this series continues and I do believe it will. I honestly look forward to the next book. This one is top notch great.
Thank you #NetGalley, #StacyGreen, #Bookouture for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.
5 huge stars and a very high recommendation. It's that good y'all.
This is a great crime thriller.
With a young girl’s body found under the ice, Nikki is called out to investigate.
Despite having her hands and feet chopped off, Nikki and Miller realise this is Kesha, a girl who has been reported missing.
The investigation takes a more serious turn when a mass grave is found in the area and when they hear a young man is also missing, they’re up against the clock to find him.
This is a gripping crime thriller with a nail biting ending.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Another winner from Stacy Green.
I have loved the Nikki Hunt series right from the start and hope that there will be more books to come.
In Her Frozen Heart, it's Christmas Eve and a body has been found in the lake. Unfortunately, it is the missing teenager Kesha. . Nikki is, of course, reluctant to leave her daughter on this special day after all that she has been through. But duty calls.
Nikki and her team are fighting time and feel like everything is stalled due to the holiday. With a bare bones crew working and the frigid weather to deal with, things are not going quickly enough for Nikki.
I love the personal and work relationships in this book and series. The way they evolve is natural and realistic. The characters are awesome as always. I've missed these characters and was excited for another installment.
Thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the arc.
I am in LOVE with this series! Book after book, it just keeps getting better! Stacy Green has a fan for life in me!
Nikki Hunt is on the case again, this time a body is found in a frozen lake on Christmas Eve. Murderers don't take holidays off and neither can FBI agents. What makes this series so good besides the suspense and the writing is the relationships between the characters. Love this team and how well they work together. The ending seemed a little rushed to me but still very worthy of this series.
And wait, you can buy body bags off Amazon?!?! Wait a minute while I go check this out... =)
I was so happy to get an advanced copy of this book. Nikki is fast becoming one of my favorites. Stacy Green is such a strong voice in this genre and her characters/stories will never leave you wanting!
It's Christmas and Nikki and her team are brought in on another case. This time, the killer matches no patterns and has been at it for a long time. This story will have you at the edge of your seat as Nikki and her team once again face off against a heartless killer. The story is fast-paced and the plot is full of twists and turns as Nikki once again digs into the mind games of a sociopath. A killer who hides in plain sight.
I can't wait to read more from Stach Green and hopefully lots more of this character!
Nikki Has Her Hands Full Personally and Professionally
Kesha is struggling to free her hands. Her abductor has repeated assaulted her and now is teasing her about whether he is going to kill her or not. She tries to humanize herself, but he says that might work with a normal person but not him. From this ominous scene, this novel starts.
The main storyline focuses on the investigation of Kesha’s murder. Initially, the investigation focuses on the ice fisherman who found Kesha’s body. There was another abduction in a town to the north, but the circumstances are different. Nikki has the file to be reviewed by her partner, Liam. As Kesha’s body was missing both hands and feet, a cadaver dog is brought in. The dog finds a burial site with six bodies one of which was quite old. Publicity forces that other disappearance to be included in the investigation. The story’s complexity goes through the roof as it is Christmas, the sheriff is shorthanded, Nikki’s partner is on restricted duties, and Nikki’s agent-in-charge is under pressure to solve this crime. He brings in Professor Roth, a neuroscience researcher, to help in the investigation, but Roth cannot go into the field. There is a flashback thread that provides some of the events in perpetrator’s youth that shaped his personality. All these events raised the tension and suspense. There are some major twists that also helped to capture my interest and kept it all the way to the end.
The B-storyline is quite rich. Nikki is juggling many priorities. The major ones are Nikki’s meeting family commitments during the holidays and getting her daughter to her paternal grandparents in Florida, trying to keep Liam from taking on too much while on limited duty, working with an outsider in a challenging investigation, and handling an irate family and police department concerning the FBI’s inaction when asked for help. These aspects are like spices that added a rich flavor to the novel that enriched my reading enjoyment.
For the aspects that are a problem for some readers, there is one quick intimate scene. Only rude and few impious phrases are used throughout the novel. Most of the violence is described after the fact. I believe that most readers will not have any problems with these aspects of the novel. This is the sixth novel in this series, and there are several references to events specially the previous one. These were backfilled adequately, so readers can read this novel first.
What I liked was the transition from a single investigation into a contentious and complex serial murder case. I could not put this novel down and would read too late into the night. I really enjoyed one short scene that involved a very young schoolgirl named Nicole. There was not any aspect that I did not like. I have read all but one of the Nikki Hunt series and have thoroughly enjoyed reading all of them. Stacy Green has stayed firmly in my Must-Read authors. I am looking forward to reading her future books. If you like this genre, I strongly recommend reading this novel. I rate this novel with five stars.
I received a free e-book version of this novel through NetGalley from Bookouture. My review is based only on my own reading experience of this book. I wish to thank Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this novel early.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of Her Frozen Heart. I love this series! The biggest strength of these books has to be the relationships between the characters and how attached the reader gets to them. You can read this book as a stand alone, but to really get the impact of the growing relationships starting from the first book might be helpful (but not imperative). I love how Nikki cares about her team and about the victims and their families. The story was great and filled with tension. I had an idea of who the killer was because I read a lot of serial killer books, but I still loved the build up to the end. If you like reading about strong, smart, independent female leads this is the series for you!
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, from Bookouture and #NetGalley. Thank you for the opportunity to preview and review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Fabulous series and a knockout punch with this one.
I am a great fan of the Nikki Hunt series. Always real page turners and devoured in one sitting. Her Frozen Heart was another page turner. A prolific serial killer, atmospheric and chilling in places. My heart rate was gradually increasing and I really loving this book. But unfortunately the ending was an anti climax after all the tension and suspense. It was a naff ending. Very disappointed. This could have been another five star read.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
Some men are ice fishing and they caught something completely unexpected. Sadly, it was the body of seventeen-year-old teenage Kesha Williams. There goes FBI Special Agent Nikki Hunt's Christmas. This case brings back painful memories to Nikki. As it turns out the teenager had been snatched from a local mall, a mall where Nikki's own daughter had been a target just a year ago. Not only are the parents and media raising awareness of the girl's death, they want to make sure that the case is not dropped or buried. They feel like because Kesha was black, that the case could be buried. Nikki assures everyone involved that Kesha's case will get the attention it deserves.
When the body of another girl is found, Nikki is certain that this is a case involving a serial killer, and is sure that other bodies will be turned up. In fact, evidence soon proves that this serial killer has been around for a long time. Hoping to connect the dots as quickly as possible, especially has her fears are confirmed, there are indeed more bodies, Nikki and her team turn over every stone that they can.
While this sixth book in the Nikki Hunt series could be read as a standalone, there is a lot about Nikki's past that lovers of continuity will not want to miss, so I suggest reading this series in order. This latest installment has excellent pacing, a few surprising twists and turns, a villain that I did not guess, and a riveting conclusion. Stacy Green has definitely hit it out of the park with the brilliantly written and executed Her Frozen Heart.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Agent Nikki Hunt is now a "friend" of mine! I love her character so much and this series simply gets better and better. Her character development is amazing and very enjoyable to follow. Rory her husband and Lacey their daughter are about to enjoy Christmas when tragedy strikes once more.
Agent Nikki Hunt and her team are once faced again with a gruesome murder to resolve.
Such a lovely police procedural, keep them coming!
You can buy body bags on Amazon? ummmm ... I didn't realize that. LOL
Sooooo ...
When Special Agent Nikki Hunt receives a call on Christmas Day, she knows it will not be good news. A seventeen-year-old missing teenager, Kesha Williams, has been found dead floating deep within an icy lake miles from her home.
Local police are convinced it was her boyfriend who was spotted disappearing from security cameras that day at the shopping mall, but Nikki isn’t so sure. When a second teenage body is found Nikki knows she is on the hunt for a possible serial killer. Christmas leaves her short staffed and racing for answers.
This thriller grabs you right from the start and doesn't let up until the very last page. The middle of the book did get a bit slow, but overall the story was pretty solid. When the person was revealed I had a feeling. I also definitely had a moment or two that I wanted to yell "Nikki! No!" LOL
Returning characters are likable and glad to catch up on them, plus the story had several twists and herrings. You could probably read this as a stand-alone but there would be a bunch of fantastic backstory that you would miss. Nikki's character especially. Good series ... not to be missed!
AUTO BUY! If you have not read Stacy Green you are doing yourself a disservice. Though each book can be read as a stand alone, I would highly recommend reading from book 1. There is so much subtle layering within the group that you miss out on what makes this series exceptional. FBI behaviorist/profiler Nikki is enjoying Christmas with Rory and her daughter Lacey. She receives a call on Christmas and knows that means something horrific. Stacy weaves the story through so many tents and does it well. Police procedural that sees what can happen within law enforcement with different factions involved. The twists and pulls within a family dynamic. Especially knowing where Nikkis growing relationship came from. The horror of murder and the steps the killer takes to enjoy his own game. A win on so many levels. The first time the killer appears on page, I knew. It was such a well done plot that I did not feel cheated in anyway. Thank you for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions. #Herfrozenheart #Nikkihunt #stacygreen #bookouture #netgalley
Stacy Green sharp pen and mind got me hooked from the start. Nikki is such a strong, flawed, and extraordinary character. This case feels and is in fact personal to her in several ways. It is also an extremely good case for the reader because you just fly through the pages and want more, and more and more!
More is what you get! I enjoy detective stories that have a personal connection to the Detective, and naturally the story should blow my mind. This book ticks both boxes. I can't highlight enough how good this book is!
Another gripping read from the Agent Nikki Hunt series! I could not put this one down and enjoyed getting to know the characters better.
I love Nikki Hunt, and always get excited when a new one comes out.
This didn’t disappoint! Poor Nikki is called on Christmas Eve as a body has been found in a lake. As always, this isn’t the first (or last) in the body count, and Nikki and her team set out to catch the killer!
Brilliant (if not over a bit too soon) I just have to sit and wait for the next one!!
Nikki Hunt is back! On Christmas eve a missing girl’s body is found in a frozen lake, as it is the holidays, they are limited on staff but they need to work quickly to find out who the killer is and make sure they do not kill again.
I have read all of the previous books in the series; Nikki’s relationship with Rory is great as is her relationship with Rory’s brother and his parents too. They really are a rock to her, considering what happened in the past (read previous books in the series).
There were people being questioned that angered me and there were others whom I suspected and later dismissed. When the person was revealed I kind of had a feeling it would be them, they gave me a bad vibe. That said it played out very well and I was totally invested in it from the moment I started to the very end.
Stacy Green, as always, wrote a great book, which was well-paced with lots of mystery and suspense and great detail that I could imagine everywhere so clearly.
I hope there will be another book in the series, I am not ready to say goodbye to Nikki just yet.
