A young woman travels to Egypt in order to find answers on the death of her brother. He worked for an arms manufacturing corporation, and the official word is that the man committed suicide. Cate knows that is not what happened. and is determined to find the responsible parties. It’s a fast moving book, full of well developed characters both American and Egyptian. The authord did a very good job
This book was a problem for me, in the sense that it’s two in the morning and I had no idea. Morning will hurt when it comes soon! Believe me when I tell you, as you sense a resolution in sight, you will keep reading compulsively, just seeking answers. Boy, this was a really good book. Cate Castle belongs to a dysfunctional family, where the thing that kept her anchored growing up was her older brother. As adults, they’ve grown apart. But when she finds out he has died in Cairo, Egypt- suicide she is told- she sets out to find out what really happened. There are so many twists and turns in this book. I don’t want to say too much. But not only is it a fantastic mystery, it is a well written and lush novel. It would be so easy to make the villains obvious and the heroes perfect. But Bollen doesn’t want to make things easy for us- whether it is examining the roles of arms dealers and countries like Egypt or the US. Or looking at a flawed protagonist like Cate, setting off to a complicated country as if it is her NYC. Is she the ugly American using a few vulnerable Egyptians- perhaps putting them in harm’s way- to get what she wants? This would be a fantastic book club read- so much to talk about. 4.5 stars.
This book grips you from the beginning and doesn't let go. A thriller set in Cairo was so unique to start out with and I'm happy to say it kept the unique, intriguing story throughout. The pacing was also very on point which is a big thing for me with thrillers. Christopher Bollen's storytelling is truly next level and after this I'm excited to pick up more from him.
