This is a wonderful short bed time story for very small children. Pictures are very beautiful and bright. I read this book because of my love for sharks. They are very misunderstood creatures of the deep. We need to help them because they make the oceans better in their own small way. Also they are on the endangered species list and need a lot of help. If you read this book to the children and explain to them why we need to save them, more than likely they will love the sharks and try to help them in their own small way. Just so in love.with.this book and others will love it too
I got a free copy of the book and is voluntarily writing a review
The photos are clear and colourful. I love being able to point out details of each different kind of shark. The age recommendation is appropriate. I will be looking for the board book version of this once it is in print to share with my children. The short yet descriptive words make this a book that is sure to be read over and over with the kids.
Great children's book about sharks. I actually saw this and another book coming out at my library soon. I saw some of the IRL pictures and thought they looked great, even compared to the high quality digital versions. I think this was a great addition to the library collection and would suggest it for classrooms. Sharks and the ocean are two great areas of interest for kids and I think they'd value the opportunity to read more about them.
Stunning photos that I know kids will love and simply communicated facts about different types of sharks. I honestly can't wait to show this to the littles for readers advisory!
This book has the most amazing pictures to grab and hold your children's attention. It names and gives a fact about each shark and is a wonderful introduction of sharks for small children.
I recommend getting this book.
Thank you to Orca Book Publishers, Mark Leiren-Young and Netgalley for this ARC!
This may be the most educational shark book for young children I have ever read! They even included the ever elusive epaulets shark. I would recommend this to every parent of shark lovers, they will love this bookl
What a fantastic book! My kids are 3 and 5 and LOVE anything about sharks and the ocean. I found this book to be very informational with lots of fun facts, in addition to being visually stunning. The photographs and layout were extremely eye-catching and overall I thought this would be a great addition to our collection.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This simple but interesting non-fiction texts tells of several different species of sharks and gives some facts about them. The text is quite large and accessible (it even has the printed versions of a and g). There is a very manageable amount of text on the page and most of the words are sightwords or fairly easy to decode. I could see young readers loving this book because it is much more interesting than a typical “leveled book” yet it is also one that most readers will find success in reading. I think this would be great for teaachers looking for non-fiction books for EAL students or struggling readers. It is a high-low book, meaning it is a high interest topic with low level words and is perfect for classrooms and homes with young or struggling readers who are interested in Sharks.
I was eager to read Big Sharks, Small World with my four year old son. We both enjoyed the photographs and the variety of shark species pictured. I think the rhyme scheme and short couplets on each page are great for the youngest readers. This book will get a lot of use between years 0 and 3. It is very brief, which is a strength for very young kids who are just developing an attention span for reading.
I think if your child is a bit older, they may enjoy this as a starting point for then looking up information about the different species of sharks in the book. For a 4 year old, this was a bit too short. For the right age, I think this is a great nonfiction book!
