Most of us will admit that we have a single idea of sharks. Even if we understand that most sharks won't attack a person, our metal image of sharks probably strongly resembles the Great White. Leiren-Young paints a far more complex picture of sharks in all their variations. We learn a lot about sharks in general as well as plenty of species specific factoids. The tone of the book is fairly conversational, making it accessible and enjoyable for most middle grade readers. With plenty of photos supporting the text it's a strong choice for a young reader.
As a shark obsessed boy-mom, I was thrilled to receive this book and share my enthusiasm over these fantastic creatures with my 7-year old.
There is a plethora of information within these pages, as well as tons of fun facts and stunning photographs that both of my children loved pouring over. The book also stresses the fact that sharks are not the mindless man-eating machines that Hollywood portrays them as, and does a great job breaking down this ages old myth.
Thank you to the author and #NetGalley for allowing me access to the book in exchange for an honest review.
"sharks don't want to eat me" was the first and most important lesson this book taught me. This wonderful non fiction book is pack full of wonderful intriguing information and humor. I love the little "shark bites" and the way it feel like the author is talking to you.
I have watched shark week every year for a long time and never knew have of the information in this book. Denticles should have been something I knew about.
Fantastic book.
What a fantastic book! My kids are 3 and 5 and LOVE anything about sharks and the ocean. I found this book to be very informational with lots of fun facts, in addition to being visually stunning. The photographs and layout were extremely eye-catching and overall I thought this would be a great addition to our collection.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This non-fiction text is quite detailed and shares several different topics related to sharks and the bad rap they often (unfairly) get. All of the most important text features are included, such as: text boxes, labels, diagrams, images, a glossary, index and other resources. While there is quite a bit of text on a page, it is fairly spread out or placed in a variety of clearly demarcated text boxes. The main text is fairly large and well spaced out. It is generally black text on white backgrounds, making it more accessible for some readers. The font in text boxes is a bit smaller, but is still well spaced and is a slightly thicker (bolder) text, which is helpful because it is on a light coloured (non-white) background. I think this is a wonderful non-fiction text with both important information and a message dispelling harmful myths about sharks. As a grade 3 teacher, I would recommend this book to parents of children in the age 7-12 range. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!
