This had a compelling book, and I devoured the first couple of chapters, eager to read the whole thing. However at the 41% mark I started to drift off and lost interest. Perhaps because there wasn’t much progress in Will’s disappearance- the night editor who has gone missing and our protagonist Rose has temporarily replaced and little suspense. Or perhaps due to the repetitiveness of Rose whining about her boyfriend Patrick to the point I wondered why she was even with him in the first place. And Patrick was such a self-centred person. Also found Rose’s alcohol dependency and convenient memory loss a cliche in the suspense genre tbh. In the second half things did pick up and there’s much more pace, but the ending felt rushed and I felt things weren’t tied up properly. I did like the atmosphere of working in Canary Wharf in a skyscraper of a building, and the specific details of East London. On the whole a decent read that’s okay at best.
So twisty! What happened on floor 34 is a pact, dark tale of what happens on the night shift. Don’t believe everything you read, this book is full of red herrings, half truths and incomplete memories that will keep you guessing and gasping!
Told mainly by Rose, the day editor, we find out that the night editor Will Frost had gone missing. Rose is determined to find out what happened, but what is motivating her? Does she realise the impact it will have in her life?
A tale of love, work, misogyny, dread and truth. The twists keep coming to the end so buckle in and prepare for the ride!
This was very different to what I was expecting .It seemed to me to be more about a woman's paranoia and breakdown than external factors, I kind of switched off to be honest, I lost interest and skimmed the book rather than enjoying the story. Hope other readers enjoy it more.
This is a clever psychological thriller with some hard hitting topics.
There were plenty of twists that kept me guessing until the end.
This was a really decent read and one that I’d definitely recommend.
I really enjoyed this exciting story it was exciting and fast paced. I couldn’t put it down. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Rose seems to have all she ever wanted: a job at the leading newspaper in the country and an upcoming marriage to her boyfriend.
But to get the position at the newspaper she wants, she has to fill the night editor post temporarily, after the man who had the post mysteriously disappears. This causes conflict with her boyfriend since working at night is difficult for her. When her attendance at a business party seems to have resulted in a unwanted sexual incident, it leads to a number of questions, not the least of which is...
What happened on floor 34?
This book has more twists and turns than a snake on steriods. Make no mistake, this is a thriller. Fans of the genre will be well pleased.
What I liked:
✔️authentic representation of someone suffering from panic attacks and rape trauma
✔️unreliable narrator keeping me on my toes
✔️unique setting
✔️a plot with depth
✔️a compelling intro
✔️the expertise of author's career knowledge transferred into the plot
What I struggled with:
🤔 Short, choppy sentences!
🤔 the numerous times the characters alluded to something and didn't share it - such as the way a child would try to get you interested to keep you asking more
🤔 too many twists all piled up together after an unevenly paced intro and midpoint
🤔 rape, despite the author’s sensitive handling of it
🤔 unclear ending still not obvious in the epilogue (or, was it just me?)
🤔 overdone thought streaming and mindless conversations
I’m thankful for the opportunity to read one of this author’s books - my first! I ran the gamut of emotions from banging my head against the wall to gleeful bursts at the cleverness of it all…and that’s a good thing. The bottom line, Corcoran is a great crime novelist on the rise. She gives us the puzzle pieces, makes us work on how they go together, changes the picture on the puzzle pieces, throws in a few annoying bits and bobs, and then reminds us that everything isn’t as cut and dried as WE want it to be.
I was gifted this copy by Avon Books UK and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Vibes: Veronica Mars, Promising Young Woman, The Girl On The Train
This book is twisted and twisty. It took me a little bit to get into it, but by the halfway point it became un-put-down-able and only got more intense all the way to the last chapter. A lot of content warnings for violence and misogyny and all the things you would probably expect from the things I just compared it to.
I guessed fewer than half of the major twists and was genuinely shocked by at least one of them. Like did not see that coming AT ALL, need to go back and re-read to see everything I missed. I can’t decide if the final twist was maybe one too many or if I was just bummed out by it. I don’t want to give too much away, but if you like thrillers and unreliable narrators, this is one of the better books from that category I’ve read in a while.
From the synopsis I was intrigued by this book and looking forward to getting my teeth into it. In reality I was disappointed. It severely lacked pace. We seemed to go whole chapters without anything happening or you were given a snippet of information and then had to wave through pages and pages for this to be explored. There were some plot twists at the end but far too many and crammed into too few pages at the end. Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books UK and the author for the chance to review.
I was expecting much more of an ominous mystery. Most of the story was hard for me to read, as it dealt excessively with the main character's mental health issues following a trauma. While of course I had sympathy for her, reading about her self-inflicted isolation and descent into being blackout drunk and depressed. I wouldn't have read then novel if I had known so much of it would be about this, it is my personal thing, I just don't enjoy reading books where the main character has these kind of issues. At any rate, the last part of the book did have some zingers of twists and made this more than a character study of a woman in personal crisis.
This book felt quite long, the storyline sounded good but it felt dull in comparison....the characters were all pretty grim and this didn't endear me to them at all. I've not read any.of this author's books before so this one may just not have been for me but I'm looking forward to seeing what their next book brings.
So Caroline Corcoran was on my list of ‘new authors to read this year’ that coupled with the title,I really wanted to read this book and find out exactly what did happen on the 34th floor!
The main character is Rose and the story is mostly told from her point of view. The story starts off at a steady pace that gradually builds the more Rose starts to unravel. The twist at around the 70% mark I didn’t see coming and was cleverly done. Twists and turns right to the very end
Loved this book and will be finding more work by Caroline to read.
Book Title: What Happened on Floor 34
Author: Caroline Corcoran
Publisher: Avon Books UK
Genre: Mystery
Pub Date: January 19, 2023
My Rating: 3.2 Stars
Rose’s dreams are coming true. She is about to be married and is the Day Editor of the country’s biggest newspapers. However, her dreams has turn into a nightmare when Will Frost the Night Editor, disappears from floor 34 without a trace.
I really didn’t know what to expect after I checked a few reviewed and saw they ranged from 1 to 5 stars Hmmm.
True it wasn’t a 5 star read but it also wasn’t all that bad.
Want to thank NetGalley and Avon Books UK for this early uncorrected eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for January 19, 2023
I absolutely loved this book. It is such a twisty read and every time you think you've got a handle on what's going on and who everyone is, the landscape changes. Caroline Corcoran manages to get a Hitchcockian suspense vibe going on as Rose tries to piece together what happened to Night Editor, Will, who mysteriously disappeared in the middle of a shift. Rose takes over Will's role and you can really feel the loneliness and silence and understand how someone's mind could spiral out of control. There are two thumping twists that I didn't see coming at all. Definitely recommend.
I’ve read a few of Carolines books but I wasn’t as gripped by this one, took almost half way through before it gathered pace. It’s the story of Rose who takes the role of night editor after the night editor disappears. Rose wants to find out why Will disappeared and events take over and her life starts to fall apart. A good plot with some unexpected twists but I didn’t really enjoy the journalism theme.
*4 Stars*
Copy kindly received via NetGalley for an honest review.
This was an interesting read with interesting characters. Willow & Rose didn't reserve what happened to them and trying to figure out who did it wasn't easy. The ending surprised me. Would recommend.
Absolutely yes! I really enjoyed reading this novel. The characters were fun, it held my interest, and provided an escape from reality. I would definitely recommend!
Rose works for one of the country’s biggest newspapers as the Day Editor. Will Frost was the Night Editor.
When one was at the office, the other wasn't. They were almost one in the same person. Then Will disappeared from Floor 34 and Rosie becomes Night Editor. But will she be next?
Lots of twists and turns in this book. Enjoyable read. 3.75 out of 5 ⭐️
An interesting one - it took me a while to get into this and I did have to convince myself to continue, but once I got into it… I couldn’t put it down! The story focuses around a missing member of staff, Will, who disappeared halfway through a nightshift.
I didn’t expect the ending or the motive! So it kept me guessing. I actually expected it to go in another direction.
As we hear about the night shift, you can almost feel yourself going slowly mad. The silence, the lack of interaction with other humans. Second guessing everything and jumping at the slightest of sounds.
What Happened on Floor 34? is an interesting slow-build premise centred around Rose, a day editor. She has a work connection with the night editor, Will Frost. Suddenly, Will Frost disappears, and Rose's boss offers her the position of night editor. However, this comes at a price. Caroline Corcoran's narrative style is engaging, and the downward spiral of our protagonist is thorough and intense. The spiral triggers an obsession to truly decipher what happened to Will Frost, leading Rose to walk a dark and narrow path of disconnection and isolation. There were multiple moments when the book dragged on and felt like a never-ending cycle, impeding my reading experience. This book is filled with twists and turns; some are pure hits, while the others felt like it was a consolation, added purely for shock value. The plot is intriguing; however, the execution slightly falls short—a 3-star read.
Trigger Warning - Rape.
