In The Dark by Claire Allen is an excellent mystery thriller. An engaging read that will keep you up very late turning the pages. This is a highly emotional story that will take you on the ride of your life. Ms. Allen writes about the missing/murdered child and totally puts a whole new spin on it!!! It is told in dual point of views with well developed characters. Grief, loss and trauma is just the icing on the cake for this pulse pounding story, your jaw will be on the floor for her ending!!! I highly recommend this thrilling story, I cannot wait to read more from this talented author.
Thank you NetGalley, Avon Books UK and Claire Allen for this thrilling book to read and review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Since I had read 'The Nurse' by Claire Allan last year, an opportunity to read another book by her seemed enticing.
Just like her previous book, Claire has introduced another female protagonist to be remembered for long. Nora Logue is that mother who went to the woods with her child and came back alone, losing her memory partially. Years later, it hasn't been found out whether her daughter is alive or not. Nora, having married and birthed a son now, decides to participate in the quest again, in the form of a documentary shoot.
After chapters of interesting, intriguing and disturbing incidents and facts from the past - the truth is revealed. Is Nora the villain or not? You would obviously have to read to find out.
The narration is pacy but I felt the climax was a bit rushed and less nuanced. Absolutely loved the chapters of Nora's monologues. That is Claire's strongest part as a writer; her women characters are so wonderfully sketched.
Definitely a good read.
I loved The Nurse by the same author, so I was looking forward to reading this.
Seven years ago Nora Logue’s daughter disappeared. Nora claims she has no recollection of the events of that day, however social media has different ideas. Nora tries to rebuild her life by remarrying & having another child. She is approached by a TV producer who wants to reinvestigate the case. Is she wise to cooperate & who can she trust?
Some chapters are told from Nora’s POV & others played out on social media. The hatred & vitriol thrown in her direction is unbelievably tense & there are some cracking revelations.
My only reservation is that the story seems resolved a tad too quickly & left me feeling a bit flat. However, I still recommend this as an entertaining read.
What a great book! It had me hooked from the beginning & had me thinking about the story all the time, I couldn't wait to get back to it.
Nora Logue's daughter Daisy is missing & she has no recollection of the day it happened. Izzy Devine wants to make a documentary about the whole story & she persuades Nora to 'come on board', as she believes together they can find out what happened. Nora is obviously reticent about it & her partner thinks it's a bad idea.
Nothing is how it seems. It's a great story that grips you & makes you want to read it in one sitting.
Claire Allan never disappoints.
Highly recommended read!
OMG what a fab read! It had me gripped from the off and I couldn't wait to read it all to find out how the story unfolded. And honestly - it was not what I was expecting! Twists and turns throughout, a brilliant read.
In The Dark was a great thriller that I enjoyed from start to finish and was led up the garden path quite a few times!
The book follows Nora Logue, seven years ago she was playing hide and seek in the woods behind her house and when she opened her eyes her daughter had disappeared. Seven years later she has a young son and a new partner but she can never get over losing Daisy. Nora is approached by a company that want to do a documentary type film on her in the hope that they can find out what happened to Daisy seven years ago, Nora’s new partner doesn’t want her to do it and feels she should be devoting her time to her son but when Nora starts the journey things take a drastic turn and she finds out that she is starting to remember what happened on that awful day.
This was a decent read, I liked Nora and although at times she annoyed me a little I still felt for what she’d gone through. The book had a decent pace and had twists and turns all the way through making this an interesting read. I can’t wait for the next by Claire Allan.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Avon Books UK for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
Everyone knows Nora Logue, she's the mum who, seven years ago, went for a walk in the woods with her four year daughter Daisy and hasn't seen her since that day, she has no recollection of what happened in the woods and doesn't even know whether Daisy is still alive. Now she is married to Brendan and they have a three year old son, Luca but not a day goes by where she doesn't think of Daisy so, when she is approached by Izzy Devine of Devine Productions to do a documentary of her story she thinks what has she got to lose, but nothing prepares her for the backlash she is about to face...
In the Dark is a dual narrated thriller told from the perspectives of Nora and Izzy. The missing child story is a common theme, and every parents worst nightmare, but the fact that the mum has no recollection of what happened gives this plot that extra edge and certainly had me intrigued as to how this was going to pan out. Add into this the backlash from online forums and social media which, let's face it, is a common occurrence that we see on a daily basis across many different online platforms, and the author has created a very relatable tale for today's society. It's a well written story, with some not so nice characters and kept me constantly second guessing the truth, but for most of the time I was Team Nora and so wanted to believe that she hadn't done anything to Daisy. The subject matter makes it a tough read at times but, as with her other books, I'd definitely recommend.
I'd like to thank Avon Books and Netgalley for the approval, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.
This book was just brilliant, I was hooked from the first page, it went everywhere with me until I had finished it and boy did it keep me guessing right up to the end. Read it you will love it ….
I loved this author’s last book (The Nurse) and was completely pulled into this one! This was a quick read that I couldn’t put down! Lots of twists and dark turns as MC Nora deals with the disappearance of her daughter 7–years before. Characters were not particularly likeable but that just added to the story! The ending was a little out there but I loved it all.
This is my second for this author and she is now added to my backlist TBR for her other books. Fantastic!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC copy of this book in exchange for my opinion and review.
A compelling and utterly addictive read. Claire's books keep on getting better and better. The only downside is having to wait a year for the next one.
Believable, disturbing and emotional are the three adjectives that define this story. It is complex, with a host of often unlikeable characters, although the main protagonist draws your empathy, despite her unreliability. The mysterious plot is full of twists and enigmatic characters. It is every parent's nightmare. This story's darkness is palpable. The intense suspense builds with each event, and the final chapters are credible and unsettling.
I like the characterisation, the twisty plot, and the ending.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
A dark and compelling psychological thriller about Nora, the mother of a child abducted several years previously. She has moved on with her life, has a new relationship and young son but all this is turned on it’s head when she is invited to take part in a documentary about the abduction. With social media divided about whether Nora is a victim or a villain, new truths start emerging about the original case and what really happened.
The story has a rich plot and relatable, though not completely likeable characters, which makes for a highly readable story.
With thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review the thriller in advance of publication.
I liked other books by Claire Allan but this one wasn't a favoirte as it's very slow building and it took ages before some action took place.
It's a story where everybody it telling their versione of the story and you are never shown the entire scene (The Golden Age mystery lover in me was a bit perplexed)
The author is a good storyteller and I think a log of people will love this story.
Not my cup of tea
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
This a compelling story about a missing child. Seven years ago, Nora’s daughter Daisy went missing while they were playing together in the woods. Nora has no memory of what happened to her and as a result has spent every day trying to figure out what happened and where her daughter went. Seven years later, she is approached by a journalist who is filming a true crime series on her case and wants her to put her to get involved in it, She sees it as a chance to get fresh eyes on the case and hopefully find more information that will lead to finding her daughter. However, she has since remarried and has a son. Will this journey of trying to find her daughter threaten this new life she has made for herself? Daisy's case is one again highlighted in the media and Nora become the victim of hatred unleashed in online chatrooms. Has she put her son Luca's life at risk by trying to unearth new truths about Daisy's disappearance? You won't be disappointed by this novel, it is fast-paced with a thrilling plot. I wasn't able to put it down. I look forward to reading more novels by Claire Allen.
A compelling and addictive read that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Seven years ago, Nora walked into the woods with her daughter Daisy but walked out of them alone. She has no recollection of what happened and there has been no sign of her since. Did Nora murder her little girl or was she taken for a fate worse than death? Theories abound but nothing can be proven.
Izzy is making a documentary about Daisy's disappearance and whilst Nora has agreed to be a part of that process, she is understandably worried about the repercussions ... she continues to be plagued by people who believe she killed her daughter and the documentary is only going to inflame this but she is desperate to remember but at what cost to her, her new marriage and Luca, Nora's second child.
The more Izzy delves into the past and snippets of memories come back to Nora, the more intriguing the story becomes.
Full of tension, twists and turns and with great characters, this is a book that had me reading on into the night desperate to find out what happened to Daisy and I wasn't disappointed.
My thanks go to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of In The Dark.
Put together a great story with a very good writing style and you get a brilliant novel and this one fits the bill.
The story is about Nora whose daughter went missing during a walk in woods and she has no memory of what happened that day
Izzy is a documentary maker who manages to convince Nora to work with her. This is the.catalyst for events to take place which are both shocking and frightening leading Nora to the edge of mental collapse.
There are many twist and turns leading to a surprising ending.
I review around 60 books a year and rarely use the the word “brilliant” but this book I deserves it.
The story is a good one, and after a very slow start the book becomes a real page turner. However, I didn't really warm to any of the characters, and everything seemed a bit far-fetched. The ending, although satisfying, seemed a bit rushed and a bit too convenient.
In the Dark by Claire Allan
This is Claire Allan’s seventh thriller – a standalone about every mother’s nightmare. Nora’s daughter went missing 7 years before with no sign, no clues, no idea what happened to her. Now a TV station wants to make a documentary about the case and the reporter, Izzy, has approached Nora to take part in the programme. Nora’s state of mind is not good at the best of times and she is thrown into a panic as she relives the horror of the aftermath of her daughter’s disappearance. The story is told from both Nora and Izzy’s point of view with the tension building as Nora’s already delicately balanced life begins to fall apart. The climax when it comes is unexpected, making it the ultimate page turner.
Another gripping read from Claire Allan
Another great read from Claire. Reader is hooked in from the start. Some very strong woman characters in Nora and Izzy. The story starts with a mission girl Daisy and her mother’s quest to find out if it’s a body or the girl herself she is looking for. You are gripped until the end.
Nora's daughter Daisy went missing seven years ago in suspicious circumstances. The only lead was some blood spots in her home, which Nora claimed were from an injury the very day Daisy went missing.
Nora can't remember much about that day. She has flashbacks but nothing is clear. She is known as the woman who lost her child or murdered her child, depending on the perception of others.
Izzy is a documentary producer who wants to interview Nora again regarding the disappearance of Daisy.
There is an online forum of amateur sleuths where discussions get heated but then when a photo is posted, Nora insists the police step up with their detective skills!
As a mum myself, I found this heart breaking but compelling to read as I needed to know if Daisy was safe. A story about a missing child is always going to hit hard and this certainly did.
One of those books where you never know who to trust. Characters you can't decide if you like or detest!
This is the second book I have read by Claire. She is a really talented writer keeping the reader guessing, just releasing little snippets along the way. I changed my mind several times regarding the outcome.
Chapters written mainly from the view of Nora and Izzy.
Many thanks to Netgalley, the publishers and author for an ARC.
