I received this book via NetGalley and give it my honest opinion.
This story was a slow burner but a good read overall. It was an enjoyable read in the end once it got going and keot me guessing until the end.. A well written murder mystery.
Murder at the Bookstore is an enjoyable read, despite being rather predictable. The main character, Jen, is a likable and funnily snarky lead. I think she will be around for awhile and I'd definitely read more books in this series.
That being said, I hope Jen gets a little smarter. She often behaved like the classic teenager in a haunted house horror movie. She told her theories to everyone, wandered off into harm's way and trusted the wrong people.
Like others have said I figured out who the bad guy was quite early on. The back story is revealed at the end and that was worth sticking with it.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Avon books UK for the ARC of Murder at the Bookstore by Sue Minix.
This was good, so good! I am totally vested in these characters lives right now. Like I have to read the next book to see what happens. They feel like friends to me. If you are a reader then you love books about writing books and all other bookish things that we see as cozy and inviting. This book does not disappoint, I can't wait for book 2 in tje series to come out.
I just reviewed Murder at the Bookstore by Sue Minix. #NetGalley

A great murder mystery set around a small town book shop. When the owner is murdered, best friend and best selling debut author Jen, who is trying to write a second book, starts trying to work out who did it.
I found this to be a really enjoyable read, it was easy to get completely engrossed and I look forward to reading more from this author. There were some fun red herrings and some fun characters.
Overall, this is a fun cozy mystery. I loved the bookstore setting. Things did start out a bit slowly, but things picked up as the story unfolded. Jen was a realistic and relatable character. I did figure out the killer before the reveal, but it was still an enjoyable story.
The story of a writer returning home after a successful book and a bad case of writers bloke. Jen then finds herself trying to solve a real murder, the murder of the owner of the book store. But why is Jen a suspect and can she solve the mystery of this crime/murder?
The story started a bit slowly for me but picked up as it went along. Jen was a good character, the plot and mystery are good and it is a very entertaining read. It is a long drawn out read which I liked and there was the mystery and suspense I would expect from a book like this.
A good cosy murder mystery that is easy to read and a bit of fun as well.
The bookstore owner is murdered and for some reason, Jen finds herself being a suspect. Since she writes crime fiction, she should be able to solve this crime with a little help from her friends. Or so she thinks. This was a nicely executed whodunit with a short list of suspects and clues dispensed that had me devouring every page as I had to know who was doing what to whom. The author did a great job in moving the story along with a few twists and turns that kept me in the game. I had a sense of who the killer was, and it was fun watching it all played out, especially when the killer was identified. With the perfect backdrop of a bookstore, a likeable cast of characters, and engaging dialogue, I can’t wait for the next book in this delightfully charming debut series.
Murder at the Bookstore is a fun, quick mystery read. Jen Dawson is a mystery author who spends her days writing in the local bookstore. When someone from the store is murdered, Jen becomes a suspect and decides to conduct her own investigation. Our heroine is a bit bumbling and disorganized, which makes for a fun read where you are surprised when she figures things out! Jen has several loyal friends who help her along the way and they make for interesting secondary characters.
My only complaint is that I did figure out the killer fairly early in the book, but maybe that was by design! It didn’t take away from my interest in the book. There are some suspenseful moments and a pretty crazy finale. The writing style was just easy and enjoyable to read and I would read more from this author!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
A murder in a bookstore was just the kind of mystery that this library assistant likes. And I enjoyed this one from page one. And I'm glad that the mystery kept me guessing to the very end. And in my book that's what makes a good mystery. I don't want to figure it out before the characters do.
Mystery writer Jen Dawson is trying to write her second novel when she gets caught up in a real life murder investigation. When the owner of a local bookstore is killed when her husband's boat explodes, Jen finds herself on the suspect list. To clear her name—and to identify the real killer—Jen and her friends conduct their own investigation into the murder.
I had mixed feelings about MURDER AT THE BOOKSTORE. I didn't really care for Jen or any of the other main characters. But the circumstances surrounding the murder were interesting, as was the killer's motive. Unfortunately, I had the killer figured out before the murder even took place. Finding out the killer's motive kept me reading. The first few chapters were a bit chaotic, but, overall, the novel was enjoyable.
After writing a best seller, Jen has a serious case of writer's block . Her current routine is to sit in her friend's bookstore drinking coffee and waiting for inspiration to strike. When her friend is killed, Jen must now put her investigating skills to work unmask the killer. Good start to a new series.

A cosy small town murder mystery. I really loved the main character in the beginning and related to her struggles and heartbreak. Enjoyed the setting a lot , perfect setting for the story. I found some events confusing and did not love the romance nuance in this but will be interested in the following books from the author.
Thoroughly enjoyed this gentle romp through murder and mystery. Quite a slow introduction but the suspense and intrigue gathered momentum as the story progressed leading to quite a breathtaking climax at the end. Jen is such an unexpected heroine, with her disorganized, chaotic lifestyle. While trying to get to grips with writing the follow-up to her first best-selling mystery, she finds herself embroiled in a real life murder, where she ,herself is a suspect. Plenty of red herrings, good characterisation and a plot that keeps you engaged til the last page.
This was an enjoyable cozy mystery. There's backstory mentioned but not really detailed so I wondered if I had missed a previous book in the series. However, once the mystery got going, it didn't really matter anyway. The murderer was easy to figure out but they may have been by design. The reader then watches our bumbling main character make bad decisions and put herself at risk. It was interesting way to read the mystery!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book,
This was my favorite cozy mystery of the year, and I would vote for it in a instant. I really hope it is the first book in a series.
The main character, Jen, was a pleasant mix of fun, hard-working, friendly and yet clumsy and a bit of a mess. She was a bit to trusting and a few of the situations she got herself into really had me nervously hoping she would be okay. If you've ever sat in your comfortable chair and silently whispered to the character--"Don't go there!" --you will understand how I feel.
While not exactly an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride, it did have those moments that were a bit nerve-wracking! But the main thing I liked about the book was that the author managed make the book fun.
I'd give the book 5 stars, and I honestly don't think many books measure up to that.
A quick, easy and cosy mystery that was well written with a compelling storyline and well developed characters. I really enjoyed it.
Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of MURDER AT THE BOOKSTORE by Sue Minix in exchange for an honest review. Jen Dawson's first book was an outstanding success. Now, everyone wants to know when the next novel will be released, and Jen's deadline is looming. All of this stress has given Jen a massive writer's block. Jen finds herself seeking refuge at the local bookstore. There, at least, she can sip on some delicious coffee and visit with the proprietress while staring at a blank computer screen and blinking cursor. When the bookstore's owner is murdered, Jen finds herself one of the suspects. Determined to clear her name and get some experience to help her draft her next mystery book, Jen conducts her own investigation. However, as her friend's murder proved, trusting the wrong person can be deadly.
I liked this book. Cozy mystery, murder, books, writing, bookstore.
Really enjoyed this cozy mystery.Wel written characters that came alive.I was drawn in from first to last page.#netgalley #avonbooksuk
A window seat, an endless supply of coffee, and a mystery writer, success on a global scale should follow, right? Jen Dawson would be happy if she could just get a chapter of her second novel completed but unfortunately her writer’s block has other ideas. The bookstore with the right ambience is a bright point of her days now she is back in her hometown with one successful book to her name but things are about to get very bad very quickly.
When a close friend is killed Jen comes face to face with ex-boyfriend's and old acquaintances as an investigation begins. Unable to leave well alone, after all no self respecting crime writer should miss the chance of hands on experience, Jen finds herself looking closely at what happened but nothing is quite as it seems and before long finds herself in the type of danger her own protagonists can't help her with.
This is book one in The Bookstore Mystery Series as well as in author Sue Minix's burgeoning career and I really enjoyed it. The first few chapters were a bit of a struggle but I am so glad I persevered. After the first main twist I was hooked and the rest of the book didn't disappoint although there were some major clues as to whodunnit which may well be more subtle as the writer gets more experienced. The ending was satisfying and with two more books due this year I am looking forward to reading about Jen Dawson and her eclectic group of friends on a regular basis.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This has the potential to become a favourite series and is definitely worth taking a chance on. Recommended.
It took awhile for me to get into this book, but once I did, I started to enjoy it. I found the main chapter very likeable and enjoyed getting to know her. The mystery also kept my interest. It was the perfect read on a cold, rainy day.I can't wait to read more books in this series.
