From jumping spiders with panoramic vision to birds that fly backward, from the many-brained octopus to butt-breathing turtles and an indestructible 'bear', Feterman's Superpowers of Nature takes a look at the most amazing specimens of the animal world. There are six different categories looking at the senses, hunting, adaptation, finding mates, changes, and kinesthetics.
Sensory Wonders showcases critters with super sensory capabilities such as the electrifying electric eel, jumping spiders and tarsiers. Metamorphosis is misleading. It looks at types of camouflage and protection such as stick and leaf insects, various disguises, and the wicked protection the real life Sandshrew (pangolin,) has. Skilled Movers looks at kinesthetics and movement such as the slowest (sloth) and fastest (peregrine, cheetah) to the hovering and backward flight of wee hummingbirds and the miraculous basilisk that runs on water.
Super Adapters looks at creative survival skills such as the regenerative ability of the adorable axolotl and the indestructibility of the equally adorable 'water bears' that live all around us. Attracting a Mate has creatures that deal with mating (bowerbird, fireflies, stag beetle), as well as those to do with child rearing (cuckoo). Hunting Power deals with ways animals hunt, and eating habits. Critters include the hard-headed woodpecker and cutlery wielding otters.
I loved that more uncommon creatures were used to demonstrate certain skills. Like the tardigrade for one, and the jumping spider for another. Each animal has a stats section briefing giving their unique power, their scientific name, size/location, and a neat fact. Below this are a few paragraphs detailing the anima's' unique gift. Each beastie also has a gorgeous full-colour photo.
****Many thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Amazing amazing book about animals and the cool things that they can do.
Superpowers of Nature: Wild Wonders of the World by Georges Feterman is a children's nonfiction book. With full color photographs and detailed text, this book is a celebrates biodiversity and nature. From the platypus to the peregrine falcon, find out all about these amazing animals and the extraordinary abilities that make them the superheroes of our planet. For example: an octopus's brain is distributed all over its body, the tropical frog causes potential predators to wretch violently, and the plumed basilisk can run for its life on water! For each animal discover their superpower, super stats and super facts about them, as well as information about how they used their super skills in the wild.
Superpowers of Nature captured my attention at first because of the photography. The images are stunning, showing some very close up pictures and others of the subject in motion, all demonstrating whatever super power described in the text. I liked the way the book was organized, and thought that the information shared was written in an accessible and engaging fashion, well paired with the images and smaller text boxes. I think this book would be a great addition to school and public libraries, as well as for classroom or personal libraries. I think many readers will love this book, and the entire related series, since the amounts of visual and textual information is so well balanced. My only complaint is that I would have liked some backmatter included, like a glossary, index, or resources for further reading.
Absolutely brilliant way to get your kids to love nature and learning, or to expand their minds if they already enjoy learning. This book is fun, colourful, and full of brilliant and exciting facts. Throughout the book, you have so many different animals and creatures that you get to find out rally exciting things about. It is written well, so that the facts are fun and easy to read. The book is the perfect addition to a lesson or an educational activity, to further the learning or help bring an activity to life. You can use play dough to build a platypus or crayons to draw a chameleon or more and then use the facts to make it more realistic and fun. It’s also just wonderful reading material, if you have an older child, who enjoys r adding on their own.
Overall, and absolutely brilliant book.
This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I explored this book with my nine-year-old who enjoyed the variety of animals included and the organisation of the book. The images and text were engaging.
I would say that this book is probably best suited to 7-11 year olds. It’s a great starting point that can give you some initial information and inspire you to research specific species further. We wished there had been a glossary included at the back. I think this was a missed opportunity to highlight key scientific language and support comprehension.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book and it is perfect for young animal lovers!
I thought that this book was fun and informative!
There were plenty of facts in the book and the photos used were brilliant
The book was well laid out, it was nice, bright and attractive too
It is 5 stars from me for this one – very highly recommended!
Stunning photography! Great book for classroom of upper grades to introduce students to animal adaptations. Each page gives a brief overview of the animal, it’s superpower, and what it uses it’s power for. Very easy-to-read format that will leave students feeling accomplished as non-fiction readers.
Superpowers of Nature is a great resource to have on hand for the kids. I knew many of the facts , but I didn't know why. It offers tons of information in every paragraph and it's fun and easy to understand.
Review to come September 24th to blog/goodreads.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
I just couldn't resist this book. I love books about animals and so this one had to come with me. Especially with that vibrant cover that just shouts READ ME!
The book is set in 6 sections. From Sensory Wonders to Attracting a Mate to Skilled Movers. Each section consists of animals that have that specific superpower. Like in Metamorphosis we meet the Chameleon who can do some great imitations and colour changes. Then in Attracting a Mate we have the Stag Beetle who is superstrong. I did love that there were section and I did love the choices of the animals. I liked that each animal gets two pages, one with some small stats and a photograph (not always making me happy because OMG no thank you to insects and spiders) and the other with information on what the superpower is. There is also great diversity in animals. We get big animals and small animals. Snakes, spiders, birds, and more. I loved how the text pages had background colours (like yellow for Cheetah). I learned some new things about animals.
However, and I don't know if it is because I am tired but I just was just a bit bored. It was just animal after animal after animal. I think some fun parts in between, like with puzzles, jokes, or maybe just a duo page with some funny facts relating to a certain section would have helped for me. Now I just tuned out at times and I found myself having to re-read parts. My ADHD was just not excited any more after 30 pages (and by then I still had 60 pages to go uwu).
All in all though, despite being a bit bored, I would still recommend the book. It was definitely fun and I liked the photographs.
A wonderful animal facts book for little animal lovers!
The introductory note sets out the purpose of this book clearly: “Discover the clever and inventive ways in which nature has given birth to superheroes.” Thus the content provides a glimpse into some of the more unusual natural superheroes, each of whom have developed/adapted a unique ability that lets them stand out.
The 98 page book is divided into six sections, each tackling a specific skillset such as metamorphosis or speed or sensory accomplishments. A whole range of animals is covered, ranging from the known such as otters and starlings; the not-so-known such as stick insects and lemurs, and the unknown such as the axolotl and the plumed basilisk! Each page has a photo of the animal, an info-box containing three data: Super Power, Super Stats (scientific name, size, location and weight), and Super Fact. Most of the ‘Super Facts’ will blow your mind! The page also has a small section of text, ranging from 3-4 paragraphs, detailing more information about the animal and its ‘superpower’. This text is interesting but might be a bit difficult for younger children.
I have read plenty of animal fact books - it’s one of my favourite genres in children’s nonfiction. I’ve always felt that actual photos work much better for this genre than illustrations. This book proves it. What stunning photographs on every page! I am sure the physical book will be a treat for the eyes.
Definitely recommended. Based on the content, the suitable age range would be 6-12 years, though younger ones will certainly love the photographs and the factual trivia about the superpower.
4.5 stars.
My thanks to Quarto Publishing Group – QEB Publishing and NetGalley for the DRC of “Superpowers of Nature: Wild Wonders of the World”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
This book is fabulous and will be enjoyed by both boys and girls. It is a book full of facts which can easily be browsed and enjoyed over and over. Each creature which features follows a set formula on the page: a superpower, super stats, and super fact along with a short detailed write up. All of this information is supported by the most fantastic photography which entices the reader to keep on going through the book.
The book is split into 6 separate sections and covers a wide range of creature from nature: spiders, bats, fish, birds...I love how this lauds the special abilities of so many different species. I know this book will be revisited time and time again and cannot wait to get a copy on my shelves!
This nearly 100 page non-fiction text features a variety of special animals and their adaptations or physical features. With beautiful pictures and detailed text, there is much to read and explore. The text is nice and clean but there is a fair amount per page on some pages. Other pages just have a few facts and a nice large heading with the name of the animal. As a grade 3 teacher, I would recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the 6-10 age range. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!
