This was a collection of 16 stories by different people from all different backgrounds, who have all made a difference in the community by being first responders.

As an Australian, I didn't really know the steps that must be taken to become a paramedic in the US nor did I realise that firefighters have to have so much medical knowledge.

I thought the people described were all amazing - I like that they were described as being the ones that run towards danger when everyone else is running away from it! I think it is a combination of wanting to help others but also being adrenaline junkies, lol.

Solid book, interesting read.

4.5 stars from me.

These are the people who have not made random decisions to enter their particular service to others but have been called to it. These are the folks who run toward danger, not away from it. While they have the same financial needs as the next person, they do not continue to serve "for the money" because they are universally poorly paid. And no one is more disgusted by a rogue member than those who are the finest kind. These are examples of the very people I have worked with over the years. I am a retired RN.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the privilege of reading this amazing book.

These stories invite us into the lives of those who choose a path of unselfish service to others, improving the lives of individuals and communities. Their stories are personal and intimate and we who read this book are blessed to accept the invitation to ride along with them. What inspires them to continue on this path is something to be pondered, explained and understood throughout the pages of this book, and we are evermore grateful.
Called to Serve: The Inspiring, Untold Stories of America’s First Responders. Authors Mike Hardwick, Dava Guerin, and and Sam Royer takes us into the lives of police officers, firefighters, and EMTs. We learn and also appreciate those who inspired these heroes to serve, as is the case with so many of our heroes. The book is a reminder of how incredibly blessed we all are to have such extraordinary public servants in every part of our nation. Let us never forget also their families, who also make an incredible sacrifice, as well, each time their loved ones leave for work each day.
As the authors express 'They make our world safer, healthier, and secure.'"

I just finished Called to Serve by Mike Hardwick; Dava Guerin; Sam Royer.

I really enjoyed this book, I love finding out people's backstories, what inspires them, what motivates them.

This book focuses on those who have chosen to work as a police officer, fire fighter, or paramedic, specifically within the USA. It was interesting to see what drove them into this career, as well as the differences in the USA workforce when compared to that of Australia.

Thank you to @netgalley for a free copy of this book to read.
