I always look forward to reading a well-crafted Regency romantic suspense, and that is what I found within these pages. As a debut novel, I think this one made a captivating entrance. Ms. Linder’s excellent storytelling skill drew me in from the beginning and held me tight to the end. The intriguing plot flows smoothly with some intriguing twists and turns. Compelling, well-developed characters captured my heart. I could feel the attraction between Henry and Ella despite the anguish, guilt, and doubt. Their slow-building, unlikely romance is enthralling. I appreciate the strong, inspiring faith thread woven throughout the story. I totally enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I plan to read more from this author.

Beneath His Silence had a gothic and Jane Eyre feel. The reader is introduced into a manor that hides secrets and lies. A young lady comes to find the truth about her sister Lucy's murder and ends up as the governess. Lord Sedgewick hides secrets and contempt for society. His one and only concern is the care of his son.
The plot is a storm that is fueled by hatred. There are many times that the characters judge others unjustly. Emma is the perfect example. She comes with the notion that she knows what life was like in the home and that Lord Sedgewick murdered her sister. Lord Sedgewick has developed a persona that is aloof and uncaring. Something that he has spent years creating. The storm subsides as the characters get to know each other, but there are still secrets residing in the manor.
I was intrigued by the story and grew to love the characters, imperfections, and all. The story was an example of forgiveness, of oneself and others. Emma scoffs at religion, but as she grows to trust Lord Sedgewick, she begins to heal and believe. I enjoyed their interaction and the sweet romance that grew between them.
Underneath all of this, there is still the issue of Lucy's death and the mystery of someone "imprisoned" in a room in the manor. If you enjoy mystery and the power of secrets, you might want to read this book.

Beneath His Silence was a stunning debut novel for Hannah Linder!
I have enjoyed Hannah's stories from the very beginning, so I was beyond thrilled when I heard Barbour Books had signed her on for a three book contract.
This story hit all the right beats combing that classic feel you hope to get with a regency read with the best parts of historical mystery tale.
Ella Pemberton was an excellent MC and I enjoyed watching her grow throughout the pages of this novel.
The fact that Hannah also included a strong faith element throughout the book that added to the story as a whole was also lovely.
I am a big fan of when Christian Authors strive to do this and do it well.
Overall, I really enjoyed this read and cannot wait to see what Hannah writes for book number two - When Tomorrow Came releasing in April 2023!

Mystery, intrigue, and a need for revenge fuel this fascinating story but the themes of forgiveness and redemption make it so worthwhile! Beneath His Silence is the debut novel of Hannah Linder and she's completely satisfied my love for Regency and Gothic fiction. A young woman intent on proving that her sister was murdered sets out to trap the man she believes is responsible but ultimately discovers that appearances aren't what they seem. Yes, Lord Sedgewick carries a load of guilt but is it because he actually murdered her sister? What are the secrets and burdens that he's been forced to carry?
This book is fantastic! Ella Pemberton, Henry Sedgewick, and an adorable Peter Sedgewick are characters that I long to know better, and the Regency setting is perfect! Wychhorn Manor is often shrouded in fog and darkness, appearing to be a place where secrets are kept, memories are painful, and danger is lurking. Slowly, as this tale continues, it becomes a place where second chances seem likely, and forgiveness may offer redemption. If you enjoy Michelle Griep's Regency novels and you remember the gothic novels of Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt, do yourself a favor. Treat yourself to this must-read debut novel!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

This isn’t a genre I have read before so it did take some adjusting to understand the language but I appreciated how the author was true to the time period. It was neat to learn new words along the way. The story was more intriguing than I had originally expected but it did get a little confusing with how the chapters were dual POV in the same chapter. I think I would have preferred them to be shorter individual chapters but some of that could have been the formatting of the ebook and more straight forward in the physical copy. I think this debut was a great start for this author and think she has a lot of potential for the future.

4.5⭐️
What a stunning piece of Regency fiction!
This story is reminiscent of Jane Austen with a strong Lizzy Bennett-like heroine and filled with all the Gothic intrigue of Northanger Abbey.
Ella truly is a firecracker with the best of intentions, and I loved seeing her grow throughout the story. Our tortured hero Henry is so broken and complicated and yet tender. Dear little Peter is a sweetheart who adds a layer of lightheartedness amid the shroud of mystery.
Every page of this tale is filled with touching moments of faith, grief, and finding healing in brokenness. Add to that a hefty dose of intrigue and a several intense moments, and I was hooked with every chapter.
I look forward to reading more from Hannah in the future!!
*Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the review copy. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

Ella is trying to get to the bottom of the mysterious death of her sister. She takes on a role of a governess to try to understand what kind of man would injure her daughter. The only problem is she learns that this man would never hurt her sister. However, what actually happened in this home?
I must admit that I saw the comments about a Gothic-Style Regency Romance and I was afraid it might not be my style. Having read one earlier this year, I didn’t care for the dark side of the genre. I was pleasantly surprised that while the book had its dark moments, the other moments shined brighter. This is completely personal preference but worth saying if someone is deterred by the comments like I was.
The storyline captivated me as I got to know Emma and Lord Sedgewick. The mystery surrounding her sister’s death kept me reading to find out the missing pieces. There were unexpected events that added to the plot which had me reading without putting the book down.
I would recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

Northston, Devonshire - 1814
Ella Pemberton is continuing her recently deceased father’s quest to find her sister’s murderer. When Lucy married Lord Henry Sedgewick she moved to Wyckhorn Manor. Shortly after she gave birth to a son, Peter, it is said that her husband murdered her. Her family has been trying for years to substantiate this. If the man is truly guilty, why did he kill his wife?
When Ella learns that Henry is looking for a governess for 5-year-old Peter, she applies for the job under the name of Miss Woodhart. While she is taken with Peter as he he such a sweet boy, she is suspicious of Henry and searches for clues as to what could have taken Lucy’s life.
This book had promise but for me, there was way too much angst, chest pounding, guilt, you name it. It was overdone in that respect and I found it tedious to finally get to the end. I’m sure lots of readers fond of gothic romances will enjoy this story but I’m afraid I have to say it was not for me.

As the second daughter of a baron, Ella Pemberton is no governess, but if she hopes to expose the man responsible for her sister’s death, she needs to be anyone but herself. The lies against Lord Sedgewick grow daily, but the truth would come at too high a cost. So he has retreated to a lonely, bitter life where his sole priority is his son. That is, until the new governess arrives and begins to dismantle everything.
A gothic-style Regency story, Beneath His Silence falls on the lighter side of gothic. With Jane Eyre elements, it includes a governess, a tortured hero, and a secret room. Thankfully, sans Mr. Rochester. Hannah Linder delivers a lot of the expected aspects of an atmospheric tale of this kind.
At times, the heroine left much to be desired. Ella believes Lord Sedgewick killed her sister, but at no point reveals her reasons other than her father insisted it was the truth. When the reader finally meets the hero, whose behavior is far from that of a cold-blooded killer, Ella comes across a bit unlikeable because we aren’t provided with an understanding of her actions. The townsfolk too supposedly talk a lot about Lord Sedgewick’s guilt, but the content of said gossip is never revealed to the reader. While in a few moments of self-reflection the hero reveals things that make him appear guilty, by the end of the book, I still didn’t know why the town, Ella, or her father believed Lord Sedgewick responsible.
In addition, for someone who claims her brother-in-law is a murderer, Ella shows no concern or interest in her nephew until she becomes his governess. If she truly thought Lord Sedgewick a villain, she should have displayed fear for her nephew’s safety long before that.
When it came to the hero, Linder wasn’t always consistent in the role she had Sedgewick play. Although he hires Ella as a governess, his expectations of her resemble that of a marriage-of-convenience bride brought in to be a mother to the child rather than a teacher.
Though the story lagged in a few instances, most of the issues seemed like debut author problems that will iron themselves out as Linder gains experience. I will definitely be on the lookout for future books as I believe they will only get better. Beneath His Silence offers a nice Regency story that fans of romance mystery books can enjoy.

I really enjoyed Beneath his science by Hannah Linder. I loved the Gothic ambience and well developed characters. Plot was great and it keeps the reading interested. Great job!

I love a good historical fiction novel. They’re my favorite. This one takes us to the Regency era. We’ve got a young girl determined to find out what truly happened to her sister and make her murderer pay. But what happens when she has to assume a new identity and get a job(which she’s never needed) just so that she can get close to the murderer. Or who she thinks it is.
But what happens when what she thinks happens might not be the truth? Or when she discovers things better left unknown? Can she live with the truth?
This book is a great mystery story with engaging characters who draw you in. As they grow and change you just fall more in love with them as the pages fly by. It read super quickly and I was sorry to see it end. This is definitely an author I will be keeping an eye out for more books by her.
I fear if I start telling you too much about the book I’ll give everything away. Let’s just say that Henry and Ella have a great dynamic and when everything hits the fan they have to decide if they can truly forgive and forget or if their lives will never be the same again in a bad way instead of a good way.

Great debut! I enjoyed the mysterious, gothic vibe. Great storytelling and great writing. Thanks to NetGalley for a copy, opinions stated are my own.

Beneath His Silence has such a gorgeous cover! And I was just as absorbed by the story.
I connected with Ella and rooted for her in her quest to find the truth behind her sister’s death. And I walked alongside her as she sorted through the lies. For whatever reason I’ve always enjoyed stories involving a governess, or in this case, one posing as one. (Perhaps it’s my love of Julie Andrews’ character in The Sound of Music.)
The pacing was pretty good, but there are places where it felt a bit slow. And I felt there was a bit too much judginess (I know that’s not a word) for my taste, and some characters didn’t transform as much as I would’ve liked. But overall, I enjoyed the themes of forgiveness and redemption in this story.

Beneath His Silence by Hannah Linder needs to the be the next must-read for all fans of regency and suspense. For starters, the cover! This new to me author absolutely drew me in and captivated me. Her characters are perfect for the genre: brooding hero, intelligent and witty heroine, and plenty of well written supporting characters. I love when forgiveness and redemption are woven into a compelling and thrilling story. I could not read it fast enough. The attention to details, the way the suspense builds, and the satisfying dialogue were spot on. I will be looking for more stories from this talented writer!

There are some books that, for many reasons, I can hardly wait to read. Maybe it is a continuation of an intense series, or it is written by a beloved author. As I read many books, there are a few that really stand out. This was one such book. At first it was the cover. I freely admit that after watching Poldark, anything with a seascape view, especially one that is tumultuous will catch my eye. The other thing was the title, it was unique. And then as I read the synopsis, which I don't always do, I was hooked and to say the least, this was one my most anticipated reads of the year. On top of all of that, this was a new to me author.
The atmosphere of this novel was truly gothic, a mystery, the death of a beloved sister, so many secrets, rumors, and the haunting home on a cliff. Ella is bound and determined to find out what happened to her late older sister. It is said that she died of illness. Her father believed it was more, and he drove himself to an early grave to find out the truth. Now Ella is bound and determined to find out what really happened and make the person responsible pay. That person being her sister's husband.
Lord Henry Sedgewick is hiding a few secrets. As we get into his point of view, he does slowly reveal what is going on in his manor and what curse he is keeping secret that he wants to protect his young son Peter from experiencing. Ella does not tell Henry who she really is as she poses as a governess for Peter. But Henry is inexplicably drawn to Ella despite her sharp tongue and what he assumes is her lower social class. I must admit that is the one part that I suspended belief on. The fact that Henry did not know his wife's family.
I enjoyed this story immensely. I got all the feels and the chills, and I cannot wait to see what else will come from the pen of author Linder.
I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

This compelling novel reminds me of Michelle Griep’s writing. There are dark threads and hearts yearning for something they may never attain. Secrets, lies, pain—this book includes these and more, but it also contains love and hope and a spiritual search and meaning in life. Ella Pemberton has gone to investigate her older sister’s death and ends up caring for her sister’s young son. Lord Henry Sedgewick doesn’t seem sure what to think of Ella, or Miss Woodhart as she is known to him. Can all the secrets be sorted out and the past unraveled or are these desperate characters doomed to suffer for their entire lives? The suspense and plot keep readers engaged and wondering if the dramatic tale will come to a good end and the characters find satisfaction. This is not your typical historical romantic suspense but more of a story of struggle. I recommend it to book clubs too. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

I am always up for a good Regency novel, so when debut novelist Hannah Linder released her book, I was eager to read it. This is a fantastic book that combines romance and suspense in a historical setting, and I will eagerly look for more by this author in the future!
Ella is an interesting character, and it took me a little bit to warm up to her. Her devotion to her sister is admirable, but sometimes she was thoughtless with her words and frustrated me as she hurt others. Henry has been wounded in the past so convinces himself he doesn’t care about anyone or anything except his son, until his new governess upends his life. They both hide secrets, any of which could derail everything growing between them.
Family is very important in this novel, though it doesn’t always show in the best light given their histories. All families are broken to a degree, but it was sad to see how they had much to overcome to be the best versions of themselves.
There are some hints of Jane Eyre here, and it was fun to see how the author took some of my expectations and turned them just slightly, making the story completely unique and a lot of fun to read. I highly recommend it for teens and up.
I received a review copy of this book through Celebrate Lit but was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are both honest and my own.

I could not have asked for more from this book. The author provides characters with deep wounds that long for the ability to overcome their pasts. Then she pits them against each other and shines a light on how guilt can burden a soul while offering hope. Can love overcome such overwhelming obstacles? I loved the rich atmosphere created in Beneath His Silence. Ella's desire for revenge pushes her to the breaking point, and the mystery behind her sister's death is a weight that anchors the story and allows emotions to run high. Silence is a powerful thing, and this book shows that even when God is silent, He is present. I could not stop reading until all was revealed and I knew the truth. Excellent novel. I received a copy of this book from the author through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

4 1/2 stars!
Wow, this was an amazing debut novel and I can’t wait to see what this author does next. Jane Eyre is one of my all time favorites, and this book had all the nods and gothic atmosphere of the beloved Charlotte Brontë classic while providing a unique original twist. Secrets, mystery, murder, romance, and hidden identity made this book a definite page turner.
What happened to Lucy? As the impetuous, somewhat mischievous sister, Ella can find no reason why anyone would want to hurt her good, kind older sister. Determined to avenge Lucy’s death and wreak havoc on the man she blames, Ella formulates a plan to expose the truth when an opportunity presents itself for her to become her nephew’s governess. Having never met her brother-in-law, she easily disguises her name and begins teaching her sweet nephew Peter. What she doesn’t expect is Lord Henry Sedgwick. He’s far from the monster she imagined. He’s a kind, doting father, who’s generous to his tenants and servants, and possess a growing faith in God. It’s hard to believe he killed her sister. But, there are secrets in the house which threaten all that Ella holds dear. Will she discover the truth before it’s too late?
Lord Henry Sedgwick can’t help but be bitter. Every woman in his life has betrayed him including his own mother. His guilt and hatred threaten to destroy every chance for future happiness until a beautiful governess enters his life. Her aloofness and forthright manner draw her to him. He’s intrigued by the one woman who doesn’t seem enamored with his title or judgmental of his past. The more he tries to push her away, the harder it is for him to deny his feelings. But secrets from the past threaten their growing love and when the truth comes crashing down, will she still love him?
This story had so many twists and turns! I don’t want to say anything more because it’s better not knowing too much going in. The characters are complex and intriguing and I loved those moments as Ella and Henry are falling in love. I loved when they practice dancing and go horseback riding. Because of all the secrets, you feel like you’re holding your breath the whole time just waiting for that other shoe to drop. There’re definitely some suspenseful moments that had me hurriedly turning the pages. I also loved the way the author weaves faith into the story.
This is a must read for gothic Regency romance fans! If you enjoy Abigail Wilson or Michelle Griep, you’ll enjoy this story. I received an advanced complimentary copy from CelebrateLit through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked how the mystery in the book had a "Jane Eyre" kind of vibe and the story reminded me of books by Abigail Wilson, who is one of my favorite authors. I liked how this book started out with the characters not trusting each other and thinking the worst of each other but as the story progressed those preconceived notions changed. I also liked how the characters needed to find God in all of this. I thought this story was really good and was very well told.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
