This book serves as a wake-up call for anyone who thinks they can escape the challenges of aging. Proactive planning is the key to maintaining the lifestyle you envision. Can anyone really prepare for needing assistance? Sadly, most people wait for a crisis as mentioned. Either way, it's hard to accept. I've found that focusing on taking the burden off our kids helps to make considerate decisions ahead of time. They don't want our stuff. I don't want to make them deal with that. Otherwise, you're essentially sticking your head in the sand and making your kids or someone else deal with the fallout (and then blaming/judging them for the decisions they have to make for you because you thought you could just avoid it and not deal with it). Anyway, this easy-to-read resource aims to empower readers to face the inevitable and create a path toward a secure and fulfilling future.
I had my reservations about this book after reading the first few pages. It seemed like a promotional advertisement for a specific firm. The full title is A Life Care Plan: Helping You Navigate The Aging Journey by Barbara McGinnis; Bryan J Adler; Tim Takacs; Jerold Rothkoff; Debra King; Kathleen Magee; Jacinda Graham
But after reading a bit I did agree with the authors’ contention that elder law is a very specialized area of the law and very expensive mistakes can be made by the general practitioner when trying to do something complicated like shielding assets so they will not be counted in Medicaid decisions. The book also contain a wealth of information that is helpful in thinking about aging.
I liked the idea of a single practice that could address multiple aspects of Life Care planning for aging. In that respect it reminded me a bit of a book I read recently on money management for the retired or those thinking about it- see https://www.jackreidy.com/blog/2022/08/16/dont-run-out-of-money-in-retirement/
The book comes out on Oct 4 so it is something to think about. I thank Netgalley for the chance to read it before publication.
When I first started reading this book, I had to stop and look at the front again because at times it reads like a sales brochure for a law firm. But I am glad I stuck with it because there is a goldmine of information here with great advice and information for yourself and for elderly parents. I particularly liked the chapters providing insight into self-advocacy and what to expect and what to ask for as we age. This book goes beyond traditional estate planning discussions and takes it to the next level. There is great advice in here that I have not come across anywhere else. So once you get past the beginning, it is definitely a worthwhile read.
Thank you to Netgalley and Advantage Media for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A life care plan will prepare you to cope with the negative impact of both predictable and unforeseen health changes. While the book had some practical and useful tips and strategies, I wish it had templates for ease of use. Also, it seemed the book was more of a self-promo for services book.
I would rate this a 3 out of 5 stars.
