As many as a child I loved Goosebumps. It was my introduction to all things spooky and horror and that obsession followed me into my adulthood. I was so excited when I saw R.L Stine was going a new collection, Stinetinglers.
I really enjoyed the second story Our Little Monsters about the girl named Becca, who is always babysitting her siblings. She decides to babysit neighborhood kids for some extra money. When a new family moves in she might be in for more than she can handle.
Not all stories were my favorite. Due to them being short story collections some stories just felt like they needed more details to them. I feel like one or two stories could have been left out and the others could have been expanded a little more. Overall I enjoyed listening to the audiobook and enjoyed the small intros about the inspiration for each story.
Great story. The narration help bring the story to life. My son and I listened to this on a road trip and it was the perfect way to pass the time together.
I loved all of these stories! Brought back all the nostalgia of when I was young and scared. It will be perfect to add to my kids library.
I listened to the audiobook with my 7 year old daughter thanks to an advanced readers copy from NetGalley and my daughter especially loved it. Spooky and silly short stories made it easy to listen to one a night until it was finished.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* As always a great read! very nostalgic, would recommend and buy!
Stein has given a new generation another book to add to their scary stories to tell in the dark. These stories are different from his Goosebumps, Mostly Ghostly, and other series. They are one shot stories but are a bit darker and less comedic than most his other tales. I love how he plays on the fears of childhood, wordplay, and concepts we forget about as adults. On of my favorite of the new stories is when the kids’ skin will not stay on his body. As a librarian I love the story where the library books start attacking a student. It didn’t matter that I am an adult, Stein tells a story for all ages, both scary and spooky.
Growing up, R.L. Stine was the king of scary stories for children. From Goosebumps to Fear Street, my generation devoured his books. I was actually able to meet at BEA which was super exciting. When I saw that he was releasing a new book I was quick to request it on Netgalley. Luckily for me, I was approved for it.
Stinetinglers is a new collection of short stories that were inspired by every day incidents witnesses by the author. There are bugs, giant holes in the ground, ghosts, monsters, doppelganger, and the stoppage of time. Each of these stories are written in the classic style R.L. Stine. A sense of cheesiness but, a full on feeling of creepiness and fear.
Each of the stories has an introduction by the author. It was interesting to learn what type of things inspire him and his process of creativity. Sometimes the simplest of things could be the inspiration for something to fear. It was the perfect way to fond a bit of nostalgia for the reader.
Stingtinglers will be welcomed set of stories for my generation and future generations. Each story is easy to read and hold just the right amount of fear. Everything feels age appropriate and is even good for the young at heart. R.L. Stine still definitely knows how to bring out the scary tingles.
Stinetinglers brought me back to my youth when I was obsessed with Goosebumps. They're fun spooky stories that are the perfect length. RL Stine is the master in children's horror and I still find the fun and spookiness in the stories as an adult.
I loved that we got intros from Stine on where he got the inspiration for the stories, it added a nice interesting layer. The audiobook narration was well done. The narrators delivered the emotion and fear well.
I'll definitely be grabbing this for my son for us to read together.
These stories took me back to the Goosebumps book that I grew up on. I really enjoyed these stories. They were spooky and creepy. The audio was wonderful. The narrators were awesome and did a great job of bringing the stories to life. If you loved Goosebumps books I highly recommend reading this one. Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Net galley. Perfect book to listen to over Halloween or listening to stories with friends. Narrator kept readers attention. Scary but not overly scary for the age group. stories kept listeners attention and left listener wanting more
Missed downloading it. I requested the book and it was archived 2 days later. I'm not even sure when I was approved for it.
I grew up devouring R.L. Stine books and when I saw this short story book was coming out I knew I needed the boost of nostalgia and I was so right. This book is right in line with the Goosebumps books I read as a kid except they are short stories. I listened to the audiobook of this one and absolutely loved R. L, Stine’s intros for each story. A super minor thing, I loved both narrators but was disappointed more of the stories weren’t staring female characters so the narrators didn’t feel balanced to me. The stories were super creative and full of creepy horror that will be fun for children and adults alike. I think the last story was my favorite about a boy who loves to make monsters and gets a mysterious present that will twist his favorite hobby in scary new ways.
This book was a page turner from beginning to end. Love this group of short stories. Brought me back to childhood. Especially loved the watch one (first story). Highly recommend. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Ten fabulous short stories from child scarer extraordinaire, R.L. Stine. Each story offers a bizarre, chilling premise, much in the tradition of the old Twilight Zone episodes. Prepare to be unsettled by monster robots, car ghosts, doppelgängers, holes in the ground that won't stop growing, and the stoppage of time. Every story is a hit but "How to Change Your Life" and "The Boy Who Heard Screams" were the most profound for me. I have a feeling I'll be haunted by those for a long, long time!
The typical Goosebumps novel is already short, around 20,000 words, but even they can sometimes feel bloated. Stine's artistry is really best suited for the short form. These concentrated doses of spooky illustrate just how effective his talents can be. I don't think it's ridiculous to compare him to Shirley Jackson. Stripped down to its essential parts, "The Lottery" follows the same structure of an R.L. Stine short story.
As an added bonus, Stine introduces each story by briefly explaining how he got the idea. It's fascinating insight for readers and fans, but also a great way to teach kids the process of creative writing. Very cool!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me the audiobook in exchange for my honest review. Another thing to say about the audiobook, you get to hear Stine's own voice for the introductions and each story is expertly performed by a skilled reader. The narration of "Bugs" was a particular highlight, as the reader chose a Southern accent for the characters. There's no indication the characters speak in a dialect in the original text, but I loved how the performance added that layer of personality to the words. Another teachable moment how interpretation can have such an important impact on the impression of literature.
All in all, highly recommended for Stine fans and those who might be discovering him for the first time. Enjoy!
R.L. Stine is the master of middle-grade and YA Horror. This new collection of scary short stories gave me all of the nostalgia for the dozens of Goosebumps books I read in my childhood and I loved them even still as an adult. Each of the short stories were different - you get stories about monsters, ghosts, creatures, sand even some light body horror! These stories are perfect to give readers of all ages the spooks, but not so scary that young readers should be too spooked to pick up the book!
This was the perfect book to pick up coming into fall and I would highly recommend to readers who love spooky stories you might tell around a campfire, scary short stories with some really different main characters and storylines, and of course Goosebumps or Fear Street.
I listened to the audiobook and while not part of the stories I absolutely loved that R.L. Stine gave us a precursor to each story in his own voice - telling us how he thought of the story, what he drew from in real life, and giving us a peak into his creative process!
I received this copy as an Advanced Reader Copy through #NetGalley, however, all thoughts and opinions on this book are entirely my own.
This collection of short stories definitely gave me some nostalgia. There was quite a variety and I felt like I was listening to short versions of the Goosebumps series.
Some stories were very predictable, but a couple favorites were Little Monsters and the tale about loose skin. There was one story that was a bit much on Audiobook, the screaming of "Help Me" got old real quick.
Overall many of these stories ended darkly and gave me some tingles. A fun Audiobook listen.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this Audiobook for my honest review.
R.L. Stine still proves he is the master of creepy for the youth. I grew up with Fear Street and loved them. Some of these would be FS and others 0r Goosebumps. They were creepy and I loved the one that had a twist ending.
The audio really sold this book. The voice actors' voices were dripping with feat and made the story even more scary.
100% recommend this audiobook. As a millennial that has always loved all things creepy and spooky I was so excited for this one. I felt so much nostalgia listening to the 10 short stories. I listened at work and was smiling the entire time. They are written just like the OG “Goosebumps” books, but the characters have 2022 conveniences. The stories are just spooky enough for 7-8 year olds, but still great for older children. I cannot wait to listen to these with my 7yr old spooky loving son.
Thank you Macmillan Audio & NetGalley for the ARC!
This book is definitely for a younger audience, I did lose interest 2/3 of the way through but managed to finish it. It did bring back a bit of nostalgia. If I was younger, I would’ve loved this! I use to read/watch the goosebumps series whenever there was nice chill in the air.
This book follows, 10 short stories including the signature RL Stine twist endings. Before every story Stine gives a short introduction on what inspired him to write the current story. I thought that was a nice touch to inspire younger writers. Clearly showing you’re imagination can be a powerful thing. The Narrators were great, you could always hear the emotion and action in their voices. Overall, Stinetinglers wasn’t a fit me, but I would recommend this to a younger audience wanting to dip their toes into children’s horror fiction.
I have not read an R.L Stine book in forever!! I used to read them as a kid! I absolutely loved this book!! Brought my back to my childhood!! I absolutely recommend this book! Read it today!! You will not be disappointed! I will definitely be reading more!
