This audiobook is so informative! The author narrates and does a great job with pacing and passion for the material. I enjoyed learning about every aspect of the bombardment of wellness and self care we have thrown at us on a daily basis. I especially loved the skincare and Goop sections. The author included info from other people- instagrammers, podcasters, other authors etc and I found that helped increased the credibility of the information the author was presenting. Highly recommend
The Gospel of Wellness was an intriguing, well researched evaluation of the void the wellness industry has filled and how the perceived value of "wellness habits" can come from unverified claims and high costs that boost consumerism more than our health.
It doesn't hold back in scrutinizing the gaps in our healthcare system, while also validating that some wellness claims are nit picked versions of true scientific studies and cultural habits.
I, myself, am guilty to being swept into many wellness trends only to realize that individualized and balanced self care takes more time that any quick fix is capable of.
Any book that calls out how problematic Gwenyth Paltrow/Goop and Kourtney Kardashian are is a book I can get behind. A lot of this information wasn’t necessarily new to me as I am already anti-diet culture and (trying to be) anti-wellness culture. But I found the author did a really good deep dive into current social media trends and how easily misinformation can spread. I thought it was interesting how the author was essentially calling some trends out and also disclosed that she has bought into them as well. It was an honest look into how pervasive wellness culture is today. I found myself reflecting on previous trends, gyms, fitness boutiques, products and fitness wear lines that I’ve bought into. I enjoyed the discussion around the social determinants of health and the harms of weight cycling. The author also mentioned and quoted some of my faves, Christy Harrison, Evelyn Tribole and foodsciencebabe! I would love for every person who is deeply or somewhat invested in wellness culture to get their hands on this book!
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan audio for an ALC in exchange for an honest review.
The Gospel Of Wellness sets out to tell the truth about “wellness” culture and I think Rina Raphael does a well enough job. I feel like most of the valuable information was towards in the end of the book and that it could’ve been shortened.
