I had enjoyed Float Plan, absolutely LOVED Suite Spot and so I had pretty high hopes for Off the Map. I'm sorry to say that I was fairly disappointed in this one. I felt like it was much more sex-focused, something the previous two hadn't been, and I missed seeing more of the character and plot development hiding behind when Carla and Eamon might be hooking up next. I will definitely be giving Trish's writing another chance but I'm hoping it reverts to the previous two rather than this one.
I have tried numerous books written by Trish Doller, they're just not my thing I guess. It's not that anything is specifically wrong with it, but it does not give me a "I can't wait to finish this" book as I dread picking it up to keep reading.
I enjoyed this book very much, with its links to Float Plan, a book I adored and have re-read. Anna and Keane, the couple from Float Plan, are getting married, and Carla (Anna's best friend) is to be the maid of honor and Eamon (Keane's brother) is to be best man. They could not be more different, as Carla can't stay put and Keane works from home.
Carla is a wanderer - she works a few months a year as a bartender to save money for her next adventure. She and her dad Biggie did this when she was growing up - travelling everywhere, sleeping in tents, and cooking over an open fire. Her mother was mostly absent so Biggie was both mother and father to her.
Now Biggie has dementia and lives at his home with her second wife, his caregiver. Carla has not seen him in several years as the change in him is intensely painful to her. She is running from the reality of it. I had my own opinion of her choice to stay away but it is probably not uncommon. Dementia is common in my family and I suppose I learned to accept the person you love however they are.
The wedding is in Ireland and Carla and Keane decide to travel there together in Keane's 1973 Land Rover. Along the way they have various adventures, both good and bad. I think they Irish tavern they stumbled into was my favorite.
I enjoyed this book very much and highly recommend it for the unusual characters, the charm of the road trip, and Carla's growth in regard to her father and his condition.
My thanks to the publisher St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the review copy of this book. It was a pleasure to voluntarily read and review it.
okay wait i really enjoyed this one. it really tugged at my heartstrings and had me with some tears towards the end. 4 stars!
tw: caregiver guilt, side character with dementia, side character death
having read the other books in this series, i was expecting it to be a little slower and full of grief but the pacing was a little faster with this one. still lots of grief. reading the quick start to where carla and eamon meet and how quickly they got together, i was enjoying it so much but in fear. you know when they get together and everything’s fun too fast and you just know something is about to happen. SIGH yeah.
carla and eamon were such fun and easygoing characters even with the impending doom that was bound to come. carla and eamon’s development taking them in different directions had my heartbreaking and carla’s travels back home made my heart ache. again, the pacing was definitely more my speed vs the other two in this series and the writing and characters just had me wanting to read more.
i also have never taken care of a loved one with dementia, this one seemed more mild in dementia cases of what i read outside of fiction books. doesn’t make it less hard but i just wanted to note that. it still broke my heart with the moments with her dad. it was sweet and heartbreaking. i cried forsure.
i enjoyed it although it was a choice to make carla’s mom who she was. i think most anything else could’ve been better for me. it just gave me the ick is all.
thank you netgalley and the publisher for sending me an arc for an honest review in return!
Excuse my french.
I didn't realize this fucking book was going to have a fucking father with fucking dementia. Seeing as my father has dementia, it is a very very VERY hard topic for me to read about it. I never would have requested this book if I knew. You would THINK since it's the MAIN FOCUS for at least 45-50% of the book, that there would be at least a SMALL mention of it in the description. Alas, there was not, and seeing as this was an ARC, I felt obligated to finish. So I did, sobbing uncontrollably for the last 35% of the book. 🙄
With that said and with my anger slowly subsiding, this was actually a great book. I absolutely love books about travelling. Add in a romance and it's *chefs kiss*. I literally loved EVERYONE in this book, especially Carla, Eamon and Biggie. You can definitely add Eamon to my long list of great book boyfriends. Lol.
Besides the dementia aspect, I absolutely cannot stand instant love tropes. 6 days and you're seriously telling each other you love the other person, you'll never love anyone else, etc. It's so far from reality that I can't stand it. But otherwise, I still liked the love part (it just needed to be expanded more over time for me).
Definitely recommend this one as long as you can deal with Dementia/Alzheimer's individuals and the instant love tropes!
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press/St. Martin's Griffin for an ARC. All opinions are mine and mine alone. :)
If all of Trish Doller’s books are as emotional as they are funny... I may have just found a new favourite authour?!
I gobbled this one right up! A rom com with depth set in Ireland? Felt like Off the Map was written for me. 🥲
I adored Carla & Eamon -- and felt immediately invested in their personal journeys, as well as their relationship. This book has heart, spice, sheep.... AND is superbly written!! Definitely one I plan to purchase and reread.
Excited to catch up on Doller’s backlist -- and to put this wonderful book into customers’ hands! 😊
This is the third book in the Beck sisters series but can be read as a standalone. I loved Float Plane and have enjoyed the next books in the series. Carla is an adventurous independent woman and spends her time travelling the world. The love of travel was instilled in her at a young age from her single parent father. When Carla meets Eamon she finds someone that wants to break out of the rut he feels his life has become. As she convinces him to travel she realizes maybe she needs to put a pause on her travelling and return home to spend more time with her father in his last days as his dementia worsens. As Carla and Eamon go on their separate journeys will they be able to find a way back to each other? This book was well written with both humorous and heartbreaking moments and has interesting characters. Another great book in this series!
I really enjoyed the journey this book took us on. I enjoyed the development of the relationship between the MCs, and I loved the family dynamics and seeing those relationships strengthen.
There’s something so comforting about returning to an author and a fictional group of characters you already love. Trish Doller’s first two novels were a pure joy to read—despite the serious subjects she tackled in them—and OFF THE MAP was the same. I read this book in two settings, happily transported to Ireland and quickly pulled into the love story of Carla and Eamon. Dollar’s writing is witty, emotional and relatable. She’s on my list of auto-buy authors for life.
My thanks to the publisher for the advance reading copy.
Trish Doller has quickly became my favorite romance writer! Her stories are a little humorous, with a not so popular story line! I quickly become bored if I read a book that has had similar story lines as 8,000 other titles. However, with Trish Doller and her romance she throws in a little twist. I loved all three books in this series! Off the Map does start off a little slow, But definitely stick with it. It will have you smiling the whole way. Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this title in exchange for my honest review.
I don't want the Beck sisters books to end! This one has a fun premise and some serious spice and I loved seeing Anna and Rachel again. Like Float Plan and The Suite Spot, Off the Map also tackles a more serious subject (Alzheimer's) giving the romcom an added layer of depth. Ireland just moved up my list of places to visit!
Thanks to St. Martin's and NetGalley for the copy to review.
This was just... honestly, where has Trish Doller been all my life?
This was funny and emotional and sweet and sexy and just all the good adjectives. I loved seeing more of Carla and Anna's friendship and seeing Eamon and Keane's relationship from Eamon's perspective (or secondhand through Carla I guess, but still). And Carla and Eamon were just so much fun to read about. Their chemistry was off the charts and their adventures were exciting and they made me believe you can fall in love in just a few short days.
The way Carla's relationship with her dad was portrayed was just so well done. Even though the focus wasn't solely on this aspect for long, it was powerful and well-written and I may have cried. Dementia is just so much for everyone involved and Doller portrays that so well and so heartwrenchingly.
I'm assuming this is the end of the series since there are no more Beck sisters (or Beck sisters adjacent lol) but I would love to see more of this world and these characters. That being said, if this is the end, it was a good way to go out!
I was a big fan of the author’s first two book so I was excited to read this one.
This time around we follow Carla to Ireland for her best friend’s wedding (Anna from The Float Plan). She meets Eamon, the brother of the groom. Their chemistry and attraction to each other is instant. Instead of going straight to the wedding they find themselves travelling throughout Ireland. Eamon discovering that he wants more out of life and Carla feeling bad about always travelling and not being home with her dad who has Alzheimer’s.
There is romance but it’s a story about self-discovery with both Carla and Eamon and about Carla and her relationship with her dad. I typically don’t like instant attraction in books but for this one it worked. Their relationship seemed genuine and the ending was perfect.
I really enjoyed this one especially Carla and Eamon’s adventures in Ireland.
So cute! I am all for a cross country road trip, especially with the steam and banter these main characters have. Their stops and other situations were perfect. Loved this!
This was a great wrap-up for this series, and I enjoyed all three of the books.
Carla and Eamon definitely get their relationship started with a bang!
This book was adorable. I will definitely be reading the other books in this series, the authors writing is refreshing and I love any books with traveling!
This was such a cute and quick read! While it is the third in a series it can definitely be read as a stand alone, which is how I read it.
Carla Black lives a life of travel. Since she was five, she spent every summer traveling around the United States with her Dad in their Jeep Wrangler, and she continues traveling by herself after her Dad decides he’s ready to settle down. When we first meet Carla, she’s in Ireland for her best friend’s wedding and while it’s not meant to be an adventure she and the best man, Eamon, take a few days to go camping and off roading before making it to the wedding.
This book was way more steamier than I ever anticipated, which was not at all. I should have seen it coming, but I didn’t and I was shocked when the first sex scene was described the way it was.
I loved the relationships between Carla and Eamon, Carla and Anna (her best friend), and Carla and her Dad. Trish Doller has created very real characters who jump off the page and who you’d want to know in real life.
I was shocked at how quickly I became absorbed into this book. It was such an easy read and and a great escape from everyday life. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Griffin for an advanced copy of this book. This hit the shelves on March 7th.
I enjoyed the adventures of Carla and Eamon in Off the Map! I was a fan of Float Plan, and now will be reading The Suite Spot as well. Trish Doller always writes wonderful characters in all of her novels. Thank you to St Martin’s Press and NetGalley.
Having recently finished “Off the Map” by Trish Doller, I am happy to have had the chance for the Advanced Reader’s Edition e-copy; thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press!
Truth be told, I only recently stumbled upon this series when I needed to fulfill a challenge prompt with “a triangle on the cover.” The Float Plan sounded like a wonderful diversion and it definitely was! The Suite Spot was an enjoyable sequel with more of a life-changing home-bound story. When this ARC became available I was more than ready to see how the adventures in this series would continue.
Carla and Eamon’s journey was obviously leading to a HEA outcome, and the four wheels, furry paws and steamy scenes along their journey were a fun getaway for me while waiting for spring and sunshine to return to my world.
Will a trip back to Ireland for sister Ciara’s story be next? I’ll be ready to see where her little red Volkswagen takes us if it is!

“There isn’t just one kind of family, you know? There’s the people you find along the way.”
I had a final chuckle reading the acknowledgment that Ms. Doller left for her mom!! :D
Carla Black grew up traveling the world with her father, Biggie, after her mom left them when she was a young girl. A few years ago, Biggie is diagnosed with dementia and tells Carla to go off and continue their explorations instead of staying at home and watching him deteriorate, and she's been traveling in her Jeep, Valentina, ever since. Her latest adventure is to Ireland to be her best friend Anna's maid of honor as she marries Keane. She flies to Dublin to meet up with Keane's brother Eamon and they have instant chemistry. As they travel through Ireland, with detours and adventure of their own, Carla wonders if she has finally found someone who makes her consider stability.
I absolutely LOVED this book and devoured it in one evening/sitting. I loved how this book just got right into it and there was no doubt that Carla and Eamon had a connection - the only question was whether or not they'd allow it to continue beyond this one week. I loved how sweet their relationship was, but they also didn't take shit from each other and called each other out when needed. Trish Doller is masterful at building a scene and this book was no different. I loved seeing the adventures they got into and how each trial brought them closer. I also loved Carla's adoration and relationship with Biggie. There were also the beautiful elements of found family that Doller is SO good at here. This book was also the spiciest of this series and I definitely appreciated that as a spice-lover! I can see how that may not be other folks' cup of tea who appreciated the closed door/fade-to-black nature of the spicy scenes in the previous two books.
Overall, I loved this book so much and even shed a tear towards the end. I can't really think of any "vacation fling" trope books I've read or enjoyed this much, so I'd say this book certainly sets itself apart in that category. As always, Trish Doller weaves a beautiful story in with a beautiful setting, which giving us joy and adventure mixed with grief - I find this makes the stories more realistic in exploring the range of emotions we have as humans and I love her work for that reason!
