there is a lot that off the map have going against it. insta love, a short page count, and an overuse of catch phrases (if i have to read "jaysus" one more time), but there's a sweetness here that is hard to ignore. that's because miscommunication is at a minimum and the relationship feels health despite everything the couple has going against them. it's easy to see why the happy ever after is deserved.
Trish Doller has a way of wrapping me up in her stories. I start reading and somehow, four hours have passed and the book is over. Off The Map proved to be no different.
I absolutely adored both Clara and Eamon. I loved their openness and their bravery and their camaraderie. Despite their instant connection, it really did feel like they had years of history behind them. The banter and conversations written between them felt steeped in history, like they’ve been moving through the world together instead of thousands of miles apart.
This book made me sweat (definitely her steamiest yet!), made me swoon, made me laugh, and made me sob a number of times. I loved that they acknowledged their feelings and I loved that Clara still left to spend time with her dad, despite how easy it would have been to stay.

Yay, she did it again, this story was fantastic. Loved the setting, loved the characters, loved the fun, loved the story, I just loved everything. It was perfect.

I honestly tried to get through this book but I ended up DNFing it about 15% in. I just couldn’t get interested in this book. It just wasn’t for me
Ever since reading Float Plan, Trish Doller will always be a favorite of mine. While this book wasn't that, it was still a fun escape for a few hours and made me smile. Carla is a nomad, traveling around the world and never staying in one place for too long. She does not like attachments. She heads to Ireland for her best friend's wedding and meets up with the groom's brother to road trip it from Dublin to the west coast for the event. Eamon and Carla hit it off right away and end up taking a round-about route out to the site of the ceremony facing several mishaps along the way.
I'm not normally a fan of insta-love but Doller handles this story well. She really keeps it more to insta-lust as Carla and Eamon agree to a quick fling with no promises of attachment. As they camp in the mountains, face down a bull and surf on the coast, they have conversations around who they are and what dreams they have. There is an easy camaraderie and while I didn't necessarily feel the extreme chemistry for them, I did appreciate the friendship they formed along the way. The story just didn't have enough angst as I never really got the feeling that they wouldn't wind up together in the end. There were no real obstacles to this. Carla does have a sad backstory with her dad and his Alzheimers but I couldn't relate to her not being there throughout his ordeal.
I am always up for a book set in Ireland and this is a fun, enjoyable read. While not my favorite in the series, I would still recommend it to anyone looking for an easygoing, lighthearted, fast read. I continue to be a fan of Doller and look forward to seeing what she has on the horizon.
I enjoyed this novel, following Carla Black as she explores Ireland with Dubliner Eamon Sullivan. Insta-romance is not a trope that I've read often but I think it works here.
Another major aspect of the story is Carla's relationship with her father and his deteriorating health, impacted by Alzheimer's. This added depth to the book and I think was handled accurately and kindly.
This is a Romance, and this is the third book in the Beck Sisters series. I have read and reviewed the first two books in this series before picking up this book, but I do think you can read this book as a standalone without missing more than some of the secondary characters backstories. I really love the characters in this book, but I did not love that the characters jumped into bed so quickly. I loved the trip that this book took us on. I found this book to be cute and fun to read with some steamy moments. I also enjoyed getting some updates on some of the characters that was in the other books in this series. I listened to the audiobook for this book, and I loved the narrator so much. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's Griffin) or author (Trish Doller) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Thank you to st martins and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Carla is a free spirit that loves to travel and explore new places choosing to escape real life. Eamon wants to explores but always chooses the safe reasonable solution. When her best friend us getting married in Ireland, she jumps at the chance to go explore another country. When they head off on a road trip to get to the wedding, adventure awaits and what else will happen.
What I liked: the book is a cute easy read that does deal with a serious health issue with her father. I love traveling so this story was fun to read. Carla feels like she has her life together and is a strong woman taking on all kinds of issues. however she realizes that she is actually avoiding taking on the most important issue the aftermath of her mother leaving and her fathers illness. She was taught avoidance or distraction at an early age and continues that method throughout her life. She does show a lot of growth and makes some hard choices instead of continuing the unhelpful pattern.
I am not a big fan of insta love troupe so the live story wasn’t realistic to me. However it was cute and enjoyable reading about their adventures.
The author does bring in a serious side with dealing with her father’s dementia. It was a good reminder of what is important. I thought this part of the story was hard to read sometimes but provided good insight.
Overall I can see this being a great book for romance fans
Trish Doller can do no wrong in my eyes. She writes characters that you care about. This installment in the series was more spicy to me so I was a tad nervous. BUT, there is a lot more to this story. I actually preferred the second half- it dove into the main character’s relationship with her father who now is battling dementia. The two shared a love of travel and adventure- but as Carla discovers… was she running from what she didn’t want to see? Is it not happening if you don’t acknowledge it? I just loved her character arc and the observations she made about other people’s rules and how they don’t have to be your rules. You can choose your own. Loved it. A RomCom that dove deeper than most.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Marin’s Press for the ARC to read and review.
Carla has been traveling for the last decade in her Jeep Wrangler, following the motto “here for a good time, not a long time.” When she heads to Dublin for a friend’s wedding, Eamon is tasked with picking her up from the airport. Instant attraction leads to a one night stand which leads to a spontaneous road trip across Ireland. They’re already later than expected so it’s all good as long as they make it for the ceremony, right?
Eamon makes digital maps but has lost his sense of direction. He feels inspired by Carla to see where his life could take him and stop living in a rut. But when he starts to develop feelings for a woman who “doesn’t do love”, will their roads diverge?
I loved the travel aspects of this story. It made me want to pack up a Jeep and hit the road to camp at some national parks. Insta-love isn’t usually my favorite, but I think Trish did a great job building their connection through time spent together and heartfelt conversations. There were some hilarious moments but also moments that pulled at my heartstrings.
Overall, this book was exactly what I’ve come to love and expect from Trish! I love her writing style and side characters so much, and I can’t wait to see what she writes next. I wholeheartedly enjoyed this book.
Thank you to @smpromance for a gifted eARC! All thoughts are my own.
Another swoon worthy treat of a book from Trish Doller! I loved the opening of this story where we learn how Carla and her dad spent her childhood traveling the National park system. Once her dad is diagnosed with dementia, Carla continues to travel and we pick her up in Ireland, meeting with her new travel companion. They head off for a wedding, but with detours ahead they slowly find themselves together. I enjoyed this book and am off to find more by this author.
I adored this story and listening to the audiobook made it even better because I didn't have to put it down. I thought the characters in this one were really well developed and interesting. There was a lot of growth in the book and it was good to see. There were a couple things that were a bit unbelievable to me but they didn't really detract from the story at all. The book was inspiring and hopeful. There were some sad parts but they were needed for the character arcs. There also some hilarious bits that I appreciated. I really loved this one. The narrator did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was not expecting the spice factor in this at all- I thought this was going to be more a self discovery type of book which in some aspects it was- but the added spice was a bonus. I am envious of Carla and her free spirit and all the places she's traveled. I felt that I was watching a movie while reading this book. I felt that I was camping out in the meadow in Ireland, that I was a passenger of the Jeep that flipped over- that I was there while they were waiting out the bull.. it was all an experience that I felt like I was on. I usually am not an insta-love or insta-attraction book trope type of girl but the way this was written was unlike others and I really enjoyed it!
Carla’s upbringing with her dad may have been unconventional but it was an adventure that taught her that there is so much out there to experience. Despite the fact that she is going through a difficult life with her father she knows what he would want which is how she finds herself in Ireland to attend her best friend’s wedding where she finds so much more.
Eamon is a man who has always done what was expected of him and now he finds himself unsettled both personally and professionally. Carla is unlike anyone he has ever met before and when they meet the sparks fly and they embark on a road trip that will change both their lives.
The characters of Carla and Eamon draw you in as they are both reaching a turning point in their life. Their journey not only gives them new experiences they will never forget but opens their eyes about life, themselves and each other.
Oh how I adored this short and sweet story. Trish Doller is fantastic at creating rom coms with substance and this one delivered. My only complaint is that I wanted just a little bit more time with these characters. Despite the short length I still laughed, cried, smiled and daydreamed what it’d be like to travel with Carla and Eamon.
Carla is is perpetual traveler, hopping from city to city, country to country, continent to continent. She lives for the experiences she creates and avoids creating deep bonds with those she comes across. Carla’s travels take her to Ireland for her best friend Anna’s wedding and it is there she meets the best man Eamon Sullivan. On the way to they wedding, they make a few pit stops causing them both to question the motives and decisions that have led them to where they are in their lives. While Carla begins to ask herself what she could be traveling away from, Eamon begins to question why he’s not traveling to something more. These two help each other answer those questions while navigating a sangria-loving bull, discovering beautiful scenery and maybe just maybe, opening their hearts.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. A quick, beautiful story about love, following your passions and the definition of family. I’ll continue to pick up Doller’s works for the desirable settings, real depicted human emotion and feel-good stories. Can’t wait for the next one!
I will definitely be adding Trish Doller to my list of authors that I automatically look for their latest book. I enjoyed the story of Carla, but maybe not as much as the story of the sisters from the two previous books. I definitely have readers who will enjoy this book with quirky characters who do not lead a "mainstream" life.
Carla is flying to Ireland for Anna and Keane’s wedding (the couple from Float Plan). She’s supposed to meet Keane’s brother Eamon in Dublin so they can drive together to Tralee for the wedding. They meet at a pub and lose track of time talking and within a few hours they’ve started a vacation fling. When they start to drive the next morning, Carla is shocked that Eamon drives a Land Rover Defender but has never used it to travel or explore. This kicks off a several day detour for them as they explore some spots that Eamon has always wanted to see.
Carla got her wanderlust from her dad and essentially works half the year as a bartender just so she can spend the other half of the year traveling the world, frequently in her Jeep. Her dad is suffering with dementia and told her to keep traveling so she doesn’t have to witness his deterioration, so it’s now been several years since they’ve seen one another in person. This detour road trip, the wedding and meeting Eamon all lead to Carla missing her dad and feeling the call back home. These aspects of the story definitely brought it me to tears a few times!
I am not a fan of insta-lust/insta-love stories in general, and that’s really what kept this from being a 5-star read for me. I do think, however, that the nature of their relationship led them to being more open and honest with one another because it felt like there wasn’t much at stake beyond this single week. I enjoyed Carla’s relationship with her dad and how she slowly came to terms with the need to work through the grief of his disease with him in person.
While I wish there had been more build-up in their relationship, there were some very sweet and vulnerable moments between the main characters. This is a fairly short book (only 272 pages) so it’s a quick read and the travel storyline makes it fly by even quicker.
This was a cute destination wedding fling with Carla who clicks with Eamon immediately as they drive on a road trip to the wedding. Well they make it a road trip after she realizes how awesome car and that there are places close by he's never been.
This was so cute! I loved Float Plan. And this had a father suffering from dementia and Carla just traveling constantly for him but then she realizes she had no roots and no partner in travel because of her father's interesting relationships and their of travel.
The audio was great! Loved the accents.
Oh man listening to the dementia episodes was hard. My Dad had liver toxicity to the point he wasn't lucid and he would go in and out but I was the only one out of the 3 of us that he would snap back to.
Thank you stmartinspress and macmillanaudio for the e-ARC for my honest and voluntary review.
I'm skeptical about romance with insta-love, and I was worried Carla would be written as flighty or flakey. But even though the romance feels rushed--the book is around 270 pages, so I guess some plot aspects have to be condensed--it's still sweet, and Eamon is equal parts charismatic and brash and thoughtful and patient as a love interest. I wasn't expecting so much insight into Carla's relationship with her dad, Biggie, who has dementia; it's both a heartbreaking and tender look at their relationship and how Carla grew up.
This book does instill a sense of adventure, but I appreciate how Trish Doller emphasizes the importance of prioritizing aspects of one's life too. (Although after reading it, if I could realistically drop everything and take a road trip through Ireland right now, I probably would...)
I was really excited for OFF THE MAP, and I ended up loving parts of it! A romance about falling in love with the best man at a destination wedding in Ireland is *right* up my alley. All of the travel talk in this one was stellar, and I enjoyed finally having some smut in a Trish Doller novel. I really enjoyed Eamon and Carla's relationship for the most part - the conflict was annoying, but otherwise I loved them together.
What I didn't like was Carla referring to her dad as "Biggie" - it seemed really immature and literally took me CHAPTERS to understand she was referring to her father, not someone else in her life. The depiction of dementia was also a little cringey at times, and Biggie dying before the effects were more severe seemed like a cop out on Doller's part. My grandpa currently has stage 7 Alzheimer's, and he (and so many other dementia patients) don't have the luxury of dying before the disease becomes too severe.
Overall, I liked this one. Carla was just too immature for my taste to give this more than 3 stars.
