I am a big fan of Trish Doller's writing and I loved the first two books in her Beck Sisters series, so I was thrilled to read Carla's story in Off the Map.
Carla Black is stubborn and believes she is unable to form lasting relationships, people leave and she's unwillingly to risk her heart. She is also grieving the impending loss of the one person she could always count on, her father. On her way to Ireland to stand as the maid of honor at her best friend's wedding she meets Eamon Sullivan. Eamon, the groom's brother, has been tasked with picking up Carla from the airport, and it's lust at first sight for both of them.
Their attraction is immediate and through a series of adventures around Ireland their insta-lust starts to become something more, something deeper. Carla, however, has no time or need for romantic love, after all she's only "here for a good time, not a long time."
Eamon Sullivan is stubborn, too and he makes his feelings for Carla clear, but he understands that he cannot push her and he gives her the time and space she requires to deal with the turmoil of emotions falling in love have caused in her.
I loved Carla and Eamon's story and just wish we would have gotten to see them together outside of Ireland a bit more. I am hopeful that we get to see more of the Sullivan family in the future.
I absolutely loved all of the Biggie-isms, iykyk. Side thought, always consider your your clothing colors when traveling. This book was a great mixture of funny, serious and sweet. Carla and Biggie’s relationship gave me all the feels, and the other cast of characters were so lovable. Where can one find an Eamon Sullivan? Asking for a friend…
Seriously, I really enjoyed this read. I was excited to see what the next adventure held and how everyone’s stories would play out. I didn’t realize it was apart of a series at first. So, I’m running to go grab the first two.
I look forward to every new book written by this author. I really enjoy her style of writing, and the picturesque setting with just the right amount of spice. Overall a wonderfully entertaining read!
This was my first book by Trish Doller and, although, I know this part of a series of books I didn’t feel like I couldn’t follow this story as a stand-alone.
Let me just start by saying any book in Scotland or Ireland is a win for me… I mean I am sure there are some I won’t like but a man with a brogue is a favorite of mine!
The easiness of the friendship (and more) between Carla and Eamon sets you up to root for them from the very beginning. I love the adventures they take on the way to the wedding, the bull 😂, all of it! They were fun and entertaining.
The way the more serious parts were woven in was great and definitely tugged on the heart strings. I love the friendship between Anna and Carla is a great one and makes me want to read the book about Anna and Keane next. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more books from Trish and so appreciate getting to read (and listen) to this one before it’s release.
Thanks to Netgalley for the eARC and audio ARC
Off the Map is a sparkling romance that is filled with adventure, warmth, and love. Carla Black is quite an extraordinary character. She is funny, good-natured, and tender hearted, an independent young woman who has travelled the world with no plans to settle down. When her mother left, she was raised primarily by her father, exploring national parks, camping and fishing; now, he has dementia, and Carla can’t find it in her to settle down. Then, she meets Eamon when she goes to Ireland for her best friend’s wedding. Together, they embark on a few adventures of their own—adventures that are often hilarious, adventures that bring these two together, despite their disparate personalities and lifestyles. I loved the twists and turns of their love story, as it took them places both geographically and emotionally, wondering if fate had thrown them together or if they were just two ships passing in the night. Interwoven with the romance is a touching, emotional story of family and home, and discovering the path their lives should take. I’ve loved all three novels in this series, and they are beautiful standalone novels—but do yourself a favor and read them all.
Instalove trope, quick read, enjoyable!
Carla and Eamon fall so hard & so fast lol. A simple trip turns into a road trip full of chemistry between the two. I needed this book to have a dual perspective so I could understand more the plot, and I feel like the character development could have been more described.
I previously read the first two installments of the Beck Sisters series (Float Plan and The Suite Spot) by Trish Doller, so I was very excited to read Off the Map. It was a very enjoyable read for me. There was a perfect balance of romance, angst and family dynamics for both characters., The character development and pacing were spot on too. It was nice to see that the main character, Carla, also was not afraid to stick with her gut and decide to be where she felt she was needed most even if it meant putting her love life and dreams on hold temporarily. I am looking forward to anything that Trish Doller writes next.
I SO thought that I would love this book. As a Jeep gal myself, an adventurer and traveler, and someone who prides themselves on being independent, I thought I would be a perfect match with the protagonist. Unfortunately, her voice was too cheesy but also high-and-mighty (kinda full of herself). Like so many modern nomads, she makes her living on Instagram and I wish the author would have chosen another pursuit - like remote tech work or writing or even something like leadership coaching .... I did thoroughly enjoy the setting and felt like the sense of place in the Irish countryside was strong. Although I personally didn't add this book to my all-time favorites, I'm glad this story was written and brought visibility to alternative lifestyles.
3.5 ⭐️ rounded to a 4!
This story is a beautiful journey of closure, forgiveness, finding oneself, and love.
I really wanted to be head over heels for this story, but something was just off for me. I’m not a huge fan of the instalove trope because i feel like it’s a bit cheesy and isn’t believable, but our MCs definitely hit it off almost immediately.
While i found this enjoyable and a quick read. It wasn’t very memorable. Definitely check trigger warnings before reading, as this story deals with some tough topics of parent illness/death.
Fate throws Carla Black and Eamon Sullivan together while they are both attending a wedding. A simple drive across Ireland turns into an adventurous road trip full of chemistry.
This is the perfect read for lovers of romance. Especially instant love romance. These two characters seem to hit it off immediately. The steam factor is top notch on this one. There were some things within the story that didn't really seem to fit the characters personality which kind of bothered me though. The instant love didn't really seem to fit Carla's character and the spontaneous road trip didn't really seem to fit Eamon's.
One thing I really like about this story is that each character was going through something and they leaned on one another to get through it. It's one of the things I feel like this author does so well. Trish Doller takes these experiences that many have gone through and weaves them into her story beautifully.
I would have liked this story a lot more if it were told in dual perspectives. I would have loved pieces of the story told from Eamon's point of view. I think that would have added to the story quite a bit.
Overall I didn't love this one because I am not a fan of instant love. I do think it's the perfect story for many though. So don't let my review stop you from reading it.
This is book 3 in the Beck sisters series, which I honestly didn’t know when I requested it off netgalley (I just fell in love with that gorgeous cover to be honest!!), but it didn’t really matter as it worked well as a stand alone book. If anything it made me want to go back and read The Float Plan.
There are really two stories going on in this book - one I really loved and one I didn’t connect to at all. I just never quite believed in the romance - it was insta love, which I’m not a huge fan of anyway - so that’s a ME issue, and I just never felt it. I was only 10% into the book before Carla and Eamon were in bed together. There was no build up, no connection, no anticipation, just a hook up. To be fair. I think that was the point - Carla isn’t used to making much out of a fling but there was something about Eamon that Carla couldn’t quite stop thinking about. The problem for me was that I just couldn’t connect to it and even as they got to know each other I still never quite felt it or believed it. I also thought the romance story was very predictable.
The side story with Carla and her dad Biggie, who has dementia, was a very sweet story and I loved it. Carla’s relationship with her dad was tender and loving. Growing up it was just the two of them and He was an unconventional parent and they traveled the world together. It’s hard to watch our parents age and dementia is a very hard disease to watch our loved ones experience. It’s also very hard on the caretakers. I thought this story was handled with grace and heart and I connected to that father / daughter story,
Overall, it was a book that I think fans of insta love and the other beck sister books will enjoy. It’s a quick, fun and light read. Thank you to @netgalley and @stmartinspress for the advanced digital arc of this book
After enjoying the first two books in this series for their adventure-focused romances, I was excited to dive into another (even though Carla is not a Beck nor a sister). The cover is perfection, and the book pulled me in quickly. Carla Black is on her way to Ireland for Anna Beck's wedding when she gets sidetracked with the best man and groom's brother, Eamon, who was sent to pick her up. The insta-attraction is strong as this book literally starts with a bang, then continues with Carla and Eamon exploring the country and their connection further.
I don't usually care for sex buddies to romance plot lines, but the way Carla and Eamon's relationship developed made this one work for me. The last quarter of the book had me deep in my feelings, so trigger warning to anyone else who has recently lost a parent. I would have liked to see more cameos from the characters from the first two books in the series. Overall, I enjoyed this book and recommend it for fans of this series. I look forward to seeing what Trish Doller comes up with next!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for gifting me with an ARC to review. I loved it!
The latest installment of the Beck sisters series. This one is not as strong to me. The plot was a bit lacking and the ending wrapped up maybe too quickly.
I really enjoyed this book! I have been a fan of this series since the beginning and I love getting to read side characters love stories!
This is a little steamier to start than the previous two and it was perfect for Carla and Eamon! I loved their wander lust and their other lusts!
I thought the dementia piece was done well, as someone with close family members who have gone through that, i know how hard it is to be forgotten and Carla did everything she could to follow Biggie’s dreams for her.
💭Thoughts:
This is the third book in the Beck Sisters series. I own the first two, but haven’t read them yet. This one can be read as a stand-alone.
I feel very conflicted after reading this book. It’s almost as if I read two different books sandwiched together. The first half of the book is an insta love story full of sex and not much substance. The second half is an emotional story of forgiveness and finding yourself. It felt strange and the ending very rushed.
There were plenty of parts to enjoy including all the references to travel, Carla’s love interest Eamon, Carla’s stepmom Stella, and the little gray kitten. Though I do wish both Eamon had been a more developed character. He was sweet and caring and I was rooting for a happy ending for him and Carla.
Overall, this was an okay read for me. I strongly disliked the first half, but found myself enjoying the second half. Definitely an emotional rollercoaster for me.
Off the Map was a very quick, enjoyable read for me. It is very instalove, instalust, super steamy book with a lovely setting. There is definitely some heaviness and some difficult topics but it helped tone down the quickness of the book. Really this felt like a romance novel on steroids - there’s a lot packed between the pages, and all the characters are quite likable. Eamon especially was a very sweet, swoony and enjoyable character. This is part of a series and while by no means do you need to have read the others to enjoy this book, I think so side character development is lost without the prior context. Overall this is a great romance for those that like some heavier topics woven in. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to provide my honest review.
A really fun rom com that takes place in Ireland - the scenery is as good as the love story and the characters are totally wonderful
I’m quickly learning that every book by Trish Doller is a good book! Since Float Plan was one of my favorite reads, I was excited to get an advanced reader copy of her new book Off the Map. I really enjoyed the relationship between Carla and Eamon in this novel - their chemistry sizzled on the page and there was a decent amount of spice! What I enjoyed even more was the relationship between Carla and her father. Hearing the stories from Carla’s childhood made this book even more special and I could identify with her struggle to be there for her father in the midst of his illness. This aspect of the story really gave the book a lot of heart and it made it even better. The only thing that stuck out to me was that the ending could have been done a little better. It felt rushed and inconclusive given that Carla had made some decisions but we don’t really know if she followed through with them. More character development would have been better towards the last few chapters. Overall a terrific read! Thank you for the ARC!
I'm here to tell you that I will read any romance Trish Doller writes. I have loved the previous books in this series; each one getting better. I didn’t see how Doller could top my love for Suite Spot, but she has. There is so much good stuff here.
I love the characters she writes, how full and complex they are. And I particularly appreciate the balance, here, between the fun of a road trip, following wanderlust, and the heavy side of grief and loss. I think she captures the yearning from both characters so well. They're so well suited for one another but of course, the timing doesn't seem quite right and yet there's so much more than a fling happening.
I could identify with Carla and her backstory is so developed. The relationship with her father is so beautiful and flawed and reminded me of my own relationship with my father.
I love how deeply connected I have felt to this world. There’s humor and romance and heart which is a perfect blend for falling in love. I just adore this series.
I received an ARC from Netgalley. The review is my own.
As soon as I read the synopsis, I knew I had to read it! Fortunately, the book gods were on my side and I wouldn't have to wait 2 whole months!! I love Trish Doller's writing style, especially in Float Plan and Something Like Normal. This is a stand alone book in an interconnected series, The Beck Series.
The Synopsis:
Carla Black is world traveler, a nomad. She loves adventures and does it as a way to pay homage to her father. She is taking some time to stop and smell the Guiness as she heads to Ireland for her best friend's wedding. The best man is the groom's brother and is supposed to pick up Carla and head to the wedding venue. Welp. Carla is not one for a firm set of plans. When she meets the best man, Eamon, all bets are off. He offers her adventure and he sees it as a way to finally be his own person.
My Thoughts:
I read this book in less than 24 hours. I was drawn in by the adventure and romance aspect. Ireland is my dream destination and I am manifesting my own personal Eamon.I was expecting romance - which I got with even a little spice. Hello Eamon. My newest book boyfriend.
I was not expecting the heartwreching second half of the book. I could see myself in Carla - right down to her dad's jeep. I recently lost my dad unexpectedly and reading this book put in my feels and I could really see a lot of myself and my dad in Carla and her dad. I loved the car references, the bull, the adventure and how Eamon and Carla are two people that were destined for no one else but each other. Fantastic read.
