This book had so many cute moments. Carla and Eamon were so perfect for each other. I loved all the spice but I also thought the parts where they actually talked at got to know each other were the best. I also thought there was really good character development. And even though the story didn't take place over much time, it didn't feel rushed to me. I thought it was well paced and beautifully written.
I honestly don't know what to feel. I tried reading this expecting a cute road trip rom-com. And it failed to meet my expectations.
(Spoilers ahead)
The pacing was way too fast for my liking, they met for the first time and what does she do? kiss him. It give me an ick, and cringed so hard. The characters were forgettable, I finished reading it a couple of days ago and I immediately forgot their names except for Biggie. Who the hell calls their dad "Biggie"? I don't even want to go on about that right now. In conclusion, I didn't like their chemistry, it was off. Also how they immediately became a thing right after her dad died, astounded me. Because their reason for not getting together in the first place is that she wants to focus on her poor dad, but then he comes to his funeral and they kiss and make up.
Trish Doller’s first two books in the Beck Sisters series are some of my favorite contemporary romance books, so I was so excited to be invited to read and review an early copy of this one.
Carla Black is Anna’s (from Float Plan) best friend and former coworker. She spends most of her life traveling, in her Jeep when she can, seeing all the world has to offer. When she travels to Ireland as maid of honor in a wedding, she meets Eamon, best man. It’s instant attraction for both and as he’s her ride to the wedding venue, together they decide take a long detour to see some places of Ireland he’d always wanted, but never got around, to.
As with all of Trish Doller’s books, there is a more emotional element to the story - Carla’s struggling with parts of her life and afraid to have more than a casual fling. Eamon feels stuck in his life, unable to get past disappointing his mom by doing what he truly wishes to - travel.
This book, while not my favorite of the series, was still so sweet, emotional, and funny - it hit all the right notes for me. I flew through it, reading it in less than 24 hours.
This book caught my attention right from the get go!
This is a novella insta love story that I don't usually like because does that really happen in reality? But that's why we read.
Off the Map is about two people who are very opposite but manage to teach each other what the other is missing. It was a quick funny, emotional and at times spicy read.
Did anyone else think the last chapter was meant to be labeled the Epilogue? That confused me a bit.
I would absolutely recommend reading this one and plan on looking for one and two at some point.
Thank you to @netgalley for an ARC of this novella, which releases March 7th, 2023.
The romance in this book was a bit too fast like kinda like insta love but not really an isn’t a love?? The plot goes by real fast and you question yourself: im already done?????? But the plot goes off on the fact that the FL doesn’t want to fall in love and recently been broken up and now she goes attends this wedding and road trip and maybe a romance will spark?
Off The Map is a "vacation fling turns into something more" romance, which is not my cuppa. I'm all about that Victorian YEARNING, and these characters are doin' it at the 10% mark If not for the NetGalley loan I might have dnf-ed, but it's good I didn't because the final third of the novel was most impactful.
I didn't particularly like Carla, Eamon, or Biggie--which is fine. I've read about the importance of unlikable female characters; I'm informed! However, these characters were written to be admired while their flaws were glossed over. It's pretty darn selfish for the best man and maid of honor to be purposely late to their best friend's wedding. Eamon seemed too woe-is-me for no-bullshit Carla (why do he and everyone else keep shitting on his ex? She may have been superficial, but HE chose to date her). As for Carla, listen: I get how hard it is to confront illness and the impending death of a loved one; I do. But she only briefly ruminates on the consequences of her actions and is never held accountable.
I think there's a missed opportunity when it comes to Biggie. His relationship with Carla's mother is reduced to a one-paragraph summary, when it's kind of a big, fucked-up deal. It would have been interesting to explore what it means to sympathize with a character who did something so morally effed. Carla has a few personal revelations towards the end, but for the most part she continues to laud her father as a hero.
I thought the writing was pretty good, and I laughed a few times. I don't find characters falling in love over the course of a few days believable (I'm also a hypocrite because if it ever happened to me I would 100% dedicate my life to some hot dude I met on vacation in a foreign country). But again, that's personal preference--it's not wrong to enjoy the fantasy. For me the story felt more genuine and human when Carla returned home, since she and her father had an established history and closeness. I think that is where the strength of the story lies.
Thank you to NetGalley and Trish Doller for the read!
Carla and Eamon meet up as the Maid of Honor and Best Man for a wedding in Ireland...and celebrate they do!
Carla Black has been traveling her whole life, but as her trip across Ireland with the seemingly perfect Eamon Sullivan she begins to question how much of her time has been traveling and how much of it has been running away. Their detours across Ireland are filled with wildflowers, slow dances, and even a tipsy bull. Overall, this was a cute atmospheric book with a dreamy love interest. This book is definitely an "instant love," which is definitely not a problem in my world, but I know is not everyone's cup of tea. As the main character, there were times I felt very frustrated by Carla's choices and her determination to keep things light and disconnected. However, I do not say this as a fault against the book, I say this because I think female heroines are often critiqued when they have unappealing character flaws when they should really just be viewed as a complex human character. So give Carla a little understanding for me as your traipse across the rugged Irish landscape in this fun romcom with a dash of spice!
She has sworn off love, he has been recently dumped. Fate brings them together for a Irish wedding. Will a road trip with unexpected detours give them a change at love?
3.5 stars for this fast and fun read. This is the third book in the Beck Sisters series, and fits in nicely with the other two. Once again, Trish Doller places her characters in a unique setting and utilizes it as more than just the background for the plot.
My main issue was that the romance between Eamon and Carla happened a bit too quickly for my taste. I would have liked to see more of a build up to their relationship. Carla's relationship with her father, and her struggle with seeing him fall into dementia, was much more developed, and ended up being the stronger part of the book.
I'm assuming this will be the last book in the series, so I'm curious to see what Trish Doller writes next!
I absolutely loved Float Plan but didn't like The Suite Spot as much so I was curious to see how Off the Map would stack up. I really enjoyed this one!! At times, it felt a little repetitive with Claire's stories about traveling and her father. I also wished it would have been a little bit longer and deeper. The ending felt a little rushed. I wished that her reunion with her dad was longer and also that her travels with Eamon were explained a bit more. But, overall, this was a great read. I enjoyed Claire and Eamon's relationship, especially how there wasn't really a big incident that led to a third act breakup but instead it was just two people who were on different paths in life and had to figure out themselves and if they could fit an unexpected relationship into their lives. Also loved getting another glimpse of Anna and Keane. I'll definitely be checking out whatever else Trish Doller writes!
Trish Doller is an auto-buy author from me. Few make me cry like she does while reading a book, especially in regards to grief. Carla and Eamon are those characters you read and cannot picture with anyone than each other.
This is not the kind of book I usually read but something about the blurb made me request it and I am so happy I did. Carla and Eamon are both terrific people searching for happiness in the wrong places. Biggie, Carla's dad (and mom), had taught Carla many things, but she made his rules her yardstick for life. This book is filled with poignant moments and it teems with life. Well-written and realistic, this book would not let me go until I finished it. I highly recommend this book unless you don't like any steamy scenes in your fiction. I received this book as an ARC but my opinions are totally my own.
I didn't realize this was the third in a series so was my first Trish Doller book. That's on me. I found it worked well as a stand alone but am now going back to read Float Plan and The Suite Spot to see what I've missed.
Back to Off the Map. Carla is a world traveller who has some family issues she that are becoming harder to run from. Currently she is in Ireland for her best friend's wedding. As she arrives she is met by the groom's brother and best man, Eamon. The hit it off and are hot and heavy in no time. He's a straight laced hard worker who always keeps his mother happy. She encourages him to lighten up, have fun and do what makes him happy. The have adventures on the way to the wedding and fall in love.
I was initially turned off by the "insta love" as that's just not my thing. However Carla, Eamon and her father Blackie stole my heart in the end. Off the Map was a quick and enjoyable read and like I said now I'm off to read the first 2 books in the series.
I absolutely loved Trish Doller's new novel, Off the Map. I loved Float Plan and was thrilled to get an e-ARC of this one from NetGalley. I enjoyed Carla, the main character and felt like the story was entertaining and had me hooked from the first chapter. This book was equal parts funny, heartwarming, steamy and heart wrenching and I loved every page.
Oh my goodness I really loved this. This was my first book by Trish Doller and it certainly won't be my last. I was unaware that this was part of a series, but it reads like a standalone. I'll now be going back and reading the others.
The writing style is what I enjoy, I really felt pulled into the story. And can I just say that Eamon is *Chefs kiss*.
I laughed and I DEFINITELY cried. This was a sweet love story and I would recommend to all my fellow romance readers.
Thank you netgalley for providing me an arc for an honest review.
I love this author so much. Something about the way she writes, transports you to another world. I just went on a Land Rover adventure across Ireland with Carla and Eamon.
When Carla decides to take the long way to her best friends wedding with Eamon, the best man, sparks fly instantly....well actually not because they have to buy spark plugs, but I digress. Hearing of the travels she had as a young girl with her dad brings you closer to who Carla is as a person. Knowing her dad is in Florida, sick with dementia wrecked my heart. Having lost someone to dementia, I know the struggles of wanting them to remember and also being afraid to let go. Seeing the vulnerability she has with Eamon, shows that maybe it's okay to take your own advice sometimes. I loved that this wasn't a typical romance. It was a fling, there were no expectations and it felt real
I don't think a book has made me feel the way this one has. I laughed, I sobbed (openly for about an hour after finishing this) so have your kleenex ready. This one will definitely take you for a ride you won't soon forget for all of the good reasons.
Oh and gasp! This is one book that I might blush a little bit at recommending to my Mormon neighbors because wow....the hear between Carla and Eamon is there for sure!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this advanced copy for an unbiased review.
I love this author and series, and while I didn’t love the story as much, Eamon may be my favorite male character so far and the setting was Irish dreamy. The story also got me out of a multi month reading rut! Thank you for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book is out in March!
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a fast read. Everything in the book was great. The only heartbreaking thing is Carla, pretending to be her mother, but I understand why she did what she did. Eamon loved her sooo much. Shout out to publishing and Netgalley for this ARC
5 STARS
A couple of things before I get into the meat here. This is my first Trish Doller novel. Also, I did not know this was part of a series. I can say that it stands alone and you won't feel like you are missing anything by not having read the other novels.
I really liked Carla Black and Eamon Sullivan. There is an instant attraction between them, but it isn't instant love. Carla is a free spirit who works a dead end job and then travels in her spare time. Eamon has a responsible job but wishes he was traveling. They meet when Carla's best friend is getting married and she travels to Ireland. Eamon is the man of honor and the grooms brother. He meets her in Dublin so they can travel to the wedding together. Instead of meeting at the airport they meet at a bar and forget the time talking. From there instead of going to the town where the wedding is they go someplace Eamon has always wanted to go but never been in Ireland. As they make their way to the town where Eamon's family is and the wedding is they keep getting side tracked and going on adventures.
This book is full of great characters, amazing chemistry, and laughter, but it is also full of life lessons. I am very very glad I got a chance to read this and I'll be recommending it to other readers.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
"Off the Map" was both funny and emotional. Carla's mother left when Carla was five, and Carla's father, Biggie, was not sure how best to handle the situation. As a high school teacher, he had summers off, so he took Carla to national parks and forests, camping, fishing, off-roading, etc., instilling in her a love for the outdoors and travel. As an adult, Carla has continued that travel tradition, working long hours in the winter months so that she can take her jeep and explore in the summer months. Biggie has equipped her well for solo travel. However, along with all the good lessons she learned, Carla also learned to run from her emotions.
Carla's best friend, Anna, is getting married in Ireland, and Carla is the maid of honor. She has flown into Dublin and is meeting the best man, Eamon, the brother of Keane, Anna's fiancé, and they will travel together to Tralee for the wedding. Eamon wants to travel Ireland and the world, and he has purchased a jeep and camping gear, but the jeep sits in a garage and the camping gear is piled in a closet unused. Eamon is the responsible son and feels pressure to please his mother/live up to her expectations, especially since his younger brother Keane took a wilder path. They have a few days until the wedding and Carla convinces Eamon to take her to the Wicklow Mountains, a place he has never been but always wanted to go, and only an hour from Dublin. She does not really have to convince him, more help him give himself the permission to do something for himself. Eamon and Carla have an instant connection, and they will have an enjoyable adventure on their roundabout journey to the wedding. There are some very amusing incidents that occur during their travels, as well as some amusing stories they share with each other about their pasts.
However, the story is also emotional. Biggie has dementia, but he did not want Carla to put her life on hold and watch him decline, so he encouraged her to keep traveling. He has a wonderful girlfriend/partner, Stella, who has taken on the role of caregiver. Carla regularly calls to check on Biggie, but never knows if he will remember her when she calls, and she has not been home to see him in six years.
Eamon and Carla's journey across Ireland will force both of them to rethink their individual lives and priorities, which for Carla means returning home and spending time with Biggie. There are some rather difficult interactions but also some very heartfelt and meaningful conversations between Carla and Biggie.
"Off the Map" is definitely worth the read.
