I don't often read short stories so I wasn't sure what to expect going in. I was really surprised to see how much creativity and thought was put into all these stories! Some of them even left me wondering, and I needed to reread them to really sate my curiosity

Thank you to NetGalley and Mariner Books for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I know it's really hard to get a collection of short stories to deliver a consistent rating, but I found pretty much all of these stories to be objectively well-written and a little bleh. If I had to pick, two favorites were the stories by Lauren Groff and Erin Somers.
Readers cannot go wrong with the Best American series. Highly recommended for people who like to escape by reading one story a day. Highly recommended
The Best American Short Stories 2022 is a collection of twenty stories selected by Pulitzer Prize winner Andrew Sean Greer and series editor Heidi Pitlor. The stories are all well-written and engaging, and they cover a wide range of topics, from love and loss to family and friendship. Some of the stories that stood out to me include "The New Me" by Akwaeke Emezi, "The Body Double" by Haozen Lu, and "The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey" by Walter Mosley. These stories are all beautifully written and thought-provoking, and they offer a glimpse into the lives of people from all walks of life. I highly recommend The Best American Short Stories 2022 to anyone who enjoys reading short fiction.
Here are some of the things that I liked about the book:
The stories are all well-written and engaging.
The stories cover a wide range of topics.
The stories are beautifully written and thought-provoking.
The stories offer a glimpse into the lives of people from all walks of life.
This wasn't my absolute favorite collection of short stories, but everything was inarguably well written. The stories also fit well together, having the same sort of general air to them, which I unfortunately can't figure out a way to describe. The collection does feel very "of the time" which I think is important for these yearly anthologies.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for the ARC. I didn't read all the stories but I read enough and I really enjoyed it. I think I'm going to keep it and go back to it to catch up with some of the other short stories. If you're not in the mood for a long book this would be a great one to pick up every now and then for a change.
These are truly some of the best short stories I've read in the last year. Some of these authors were completely new to me, and I really appreciated the diverse pool of talented writers and unique stories. A solid collection, highly recommended!
The Best American Short Stories 2022 is a well curated anthology edited by Andrew Sean Green (guest editor for 2022) & Heidi Pitlor (series editor). Released 1st Nov 2022 by HarperCollins on their Mariner imprint, it's 352 pages and is available in hardcover, paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats.
This is an extremely engaging and thought provoking anthology of short fiction published in North American magazines in Jan 2021-Jan 2022. It's a wide ranging collection with a darker character and more dystopian feel than in earlier years. It's not a surprise, given the world situation with the pandemic, upheaval, economic uncertainty, and much of the world *literally* on fire as these stories were being born. Nevertheless, gloomy outlooks aside, the quality of the writing is undisputedly top shelf. The authors (many of whom were previously unfamiliar to me) are well versed in the subtleties of their craft. All 20 stories are supremely readable, some of them are sublime.
The lead story, A Ravishing Sun, by Leslie Blanco, was a definite high point of the anthology and stuck in my mind long after reading. All of the selections were in the 3-5 star range, but that one really stood out for me.
One reason I like collections and anthologies is that short fiction is really challenging. It's spare and the author doesn't have a wealth of wordage to develop characters or the plotting. Well written short fiction is a delight. I also love collections because if one story doesn't really grab me, there's another story just a few pages away. The guest editor for this volume provides a well written intro and commentary and, as always, the background comments are interesting and informative. I enjoyed and used the "Other Distinguished Stories of 2021" lists included in the volume for even more good recommendations for further reading.
Four stars on average. It's a diverting and worthwhile read to be savored like a box of chocolates. This would make a good selection for public library acquisition as well as for home readers looking for a solid anthology of stories which will also likely serve as an introduction to lots of new authors to search out.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Anthologies fill a necessary space in my reading history. I find short stories that feed into my favorite series and excellent stories by authors who quickly become favorites on my TBR lists. I always have at least one anthology with me wherever I go, just in case I have time to read and finish a short story. This annual contribution to my library is one I would recommend to any and everyone looking for something different.
Not surprisingly, a solid collection of stories. I've other anthologies in this series, and you don't have like the editor to enjoy most or all of the stories. This set of tales worked particularly well for me. Recommended.
I really appreciate the free ARC for review!!
I could not finish this collection of stories. I seemed like the stories were all written by the same person, and they were not interesting at all.
Special thanks to Mariner Books and Netgalley for the ARC of this book.
I always have loved short stories or I should say ...anthologies. The difference is short stories are usually books put out by the same author. And If you like reading different authors whether you heard of them or not, that's anthologies.
They also have Best American Short Stories of Mystery, Travel, Essays, or Nonrequired Stories, maybe more but author and Pulizer Prize Winner author Andrew Sean Greer and series editor Heidi Pitior selected this years'.
Some you might be left scratching your head and say this is not for me, others you will find absolutely excellent storytelling.
Thank you Mariner Books and Netgalley again for providing me this book of 20 d6ifferet stories
Whoever picked the stories for this year‘s anthology did a great job! My favorite story however was The Sins of Others, and it wasn’t lost on me that Carl despite running his wife down with his truck got in it while immigration drove poor Jaun away. I also enjoyed Dr. Dog and Bears Among The Living these are definitely my top three favorites, but I won’t say it was easy to pick because so many of these stories is so great. I love reading short stories and sometimes even novels say important commentary on society in these short story anthology certainly do that and I love them and cannot get enough. They should do a book every month that would be great lol! Love the stories. I received this book from NetGalleyShelf and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
"The Best American" Series release time is always the bookish highlight of my year, and this year's The Best American Short Stories was no exception. This collection of stories was well-rounded and diverse, exploring a range of topics and themes. There are several that I find myself thinking about again and again.
Another great edition of The Best American Short Stories! I always enjoy seeing who is included and reading old favorites alongside new discoveries.
Another stellar entry in the Best American Short Stories series, featuring tales selected by guest editor Andrew Sean Greer. These collections are always such a great way to get exposed to work from writers one might not have encountered before, and this year's selections are no exception. While not every story will be to every reader's taste, as Mr. Greer's introduction cheerfully points out, there are twenty tales tucked into this tome and most readers will find several that stay on their mind long after the book is finished.
Thanks to NetGalley and Mariner Books for the opportunity to read this book!
