I appreciate the ability to send a rating and review for this title. Thank you to Helene Reckitt for sharing your time and talent in The Art of Feminsim, Revised Edition.
The title was misleading, as rather than being art about feminism, or of the feminist movements throughout history, this book is mostly about art by women. Which is fine, don't get me wrong, but it's not really what the title or the description promises. I really enjoyed the section on the role that art played in the "suffragette" movement around the turn of the 20th century, and wish there was much more like that throughout the book.
Thank you NetGalley, Chronicle Books, and Helena Reckitt for the eGalley copy of this collection.
The Art of Feminism, Revised Edition is a beautiful book collecting a wide range of pieces from across the history of the feminist movement(s). While the art is beautiful and the history fascinating, the writing itself is often dry and a bit stuttered. Worth a read and possibly a purchase, but more for the gazing and referencing than a smooth history lesson.
The Art of Feminism is a gorgeous book of art and photography cataloging feminism and women's history. This book mad me feel so powerful and reminded me that I am a part of something bigger. It also reminded me that we certainly have a long way to go!
The most interesting bit about this book is how women see themselves. Perspective is everything and a women's reality of the world, those around her and herself are typically different from what a man would view.
The history of women's freedom (by society) to create art is more dry for me, but I loved looking at the actual pieces.
