This is truly a recipe book meant for anime fans whether or not they can make many of the dishes before seeing this. I mean, who can’t pass up on a cookbook inspired by some of the most iconic dishes featured in anime? In true anime style, even the photos in the book are beautifully illustrated photos rather than pictures taken of the real life dishes. It’s so much fun!
The book is separated into sections: appetizers, main dishes, desserts, and drinks. There’s also a list of tools and ingredients that one will need to make all the recipes found in the book. The ingredient list is pretty nice and explains what each item is and specifies the type to buy if it’s not specified in the recipe. For example, if the recipe doesn’t specify a specific oil, it tells us that we can use whatever our preferred neutral oil is.
One of the things that I love about this cookbook, other than the delicious recipes of course, is the beautiful artwork. It’s taking me back to all the times I was watching a show and all the food looked delicious even though it was animated, and here we are with a bunch of beautifully illustrated pictures of the dishes to get everyone hungry. If you think you can’t get hungry looking at food illustrations, you are absolutely wrong and this is the hill I’m planting myself on! Plus, each recipe is easy to follow and also includes what anime it appeared in as well as how it connects to the characters and the story. There’s occasionally a little bit of humor, information on the dish, or what extra bits of inspiration was behind the particular recipe featured. All in all, it’s a wonderful cookbook and I’m excited to make some of the recipes and drinks that I’ve had before but never made myself.
If you have an anime fan in your house, you absolutely need this cookbook. It’s a cookbook but it looks very anime (not just a regular cookbook with pictures for recipes based on anime)
Great collection of recipes. I wish there were more pictures as some recipes don’t have them and it’s not easy to know what everything is but the ideas are great and it’s lovely for an anime fan!!
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read this title in exchange for my feedback.
This is the perfect cookbook for anime lovers. The concept and illustrations are great. The recipes are categorized into 4 parts: appetizers, mains, desserts, and drinks. The book also explains the common tools and ingredients to create Japanese dishes. What makes this cookbook stands out is that it includes the title of the anime, which season and episode, and even explains the story behind the dish that appears in that episode before going into the recipe. It's everything an anime lover wants. You may not meet your waifu/husbu but you can eat the food they eat.
This book is adorable! The illustrations are just as delicious as the anime dishes they represent. I had my nephew over the other day and we made the cat onigiri (though cat is stretching it more like blob) the Dango from samurai champloo, and jokingly the prairie oyster (non alcoholic! He's just such a recent Bebop fan that he felt he had to try it)
I can't wait to try more, and do believe this is an excellent addition to the anime fan's kitchen. It's an excellent bonding experience with friends too!
Thank you NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this cookbook in exchange for my honest review!
The caveats: this is not a book for a beginning cook/baker, nor is it for children, as it has recipes for alcoholic drinks. It'd also be best if you live somewhere with easy access to an Asian market, because (at least where I'm from) many of the ingredients aren't easily found at your local grocery store. And if you don't eat pork, be prepared to make some substitutions.
Those out of the way, this is a fun cookbook with detailed step-by-step instructions for making a variety of dishes from a wide range of (mostly shounen) series. As a baker, I found the dessert section to be the most interesting, but there's a little something for everyone in here. Illustrations are mainly just that, drawn images, which is a little too bad, but following the recipes closely does get you something far closer to Japanese than anything on the travesty that was Japanese Week on The Great British Baking Show.
Started making it, burned the rice… Bon appetite😂
This is pretty much how my cooking went. I absolutely loved these recipes and even though I managed to almost burn the house down, I will definitely try making some of these things again. Especially after seeing my boyfriend’s reaction to Pikachu curry!
I genuinely think if you can cook, you’ll have great fun with making these recipes. If you’re like me and you have a cooking skill of a raccoon you probably won’t create the best food but hey, at least you’re gonna have fun!!!! Oh, and start with Howl’s Breakfast Plate, it’s one of the easiest dishes to make!!! 🥰
This takes meals from popular anime and manga and creates recipes for them. The measurements are in metric and imperial. The ingredients aren't that hard to get for most recipes. The art is all illustrated and shows an idealized finished product. It might be to hard for people nor familiar with cooking. Overall good for intermediate home cooks.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I LOVED IT!!
I don't remember the number of times where I salivated over watching a character of my favorite anime making or eating a delicious meal or a Bento. They always make them look so yummy that I just want to try them.
Here, I have tried some of these recipes like the omelette, the risotto, the Ponyo's Ramen, the spinach cheese quiche,Kiki's chocolate cake and I want to try more. I just hoped that there were the pictures of the actual anime's characters with each dish.
I enjoyed reading this cookbook! I’ve read a similar cookbook and this one was just as good. I like the paragraph before each recipe explaining the anime and scene that inspired the recipe. It makes me want to watch the shows/movies. The pictures were cute and drawn in an anime style themselves. The recipe seemed fairly easy to follow though there were ones with varying difficulty.
The only things that would have made the cookbook better would be illustrations for every recipe and some suggestions for alternates to make things acceptable for different diets/food restrictions.
This anime cookbook features A LOT of trending and popular anime. The beginning discusses the various special ingredients you may need which will be helpful to anyone that is not familiar with Japanese cuisine. Since this is an early edition I'm not sure if this is the final edition or not but the only complaint I have is that there are drawings of the recipes instead of pictures. If they weren't going to include real pictures they could have inserted images from the anime. I like the table of contents at the beginning and how the recipes are organized in the book. I like the description from each anime about the recipe. The steps may be complex to follow but it is difficult summarize certain recipes onto one page. Sometimes recipes are more fun to review than actually perform. I think many people who enjoy anime will enjoy this book too.
If you're an anime fan, this one is for you!
Not only is this filled with beautiful illustrations that jump off the page but the recipes and the anime they were inspired by are fresh and new! From classics like One Piece to my personal favorite Jujustu Kaisen this has something for everyone!
This one is a must buy for a any fan!
This cookbook is the cutest and most useful cookbook I've ever used in my life (and I bought a lot of them).
It was adorable illustrations and recipes that are so easy to follow. Also, there is info about the exact episode that features the given recipe. You can easily make food your favorite characters are eating and enjoy your heavenly meal while watching them eat it too. Brilliant. Just brilliant.
Huge recommendation! You need this! Trust me!
ARc copy...Sure to be a cute-kawaii addition to any anime lovers's library especially if they want to learn how to cook. Illustrations look cute and love to use the basic kind of cooking recipes included that beginner cooks should know.
This is such a cute idea for a book and it does a great job. The recipes look yummy and easy to follow .

I really love this book and can't wait for the opportunity to own it. I really appreciated the beginning pages and how they gave a thorough concept of what is needed in the kitchen to work on the contents of the book. I really love that every item in the book has a reference back to an anime and the anime that is chosen spans multiple generations of anime lovers. I appreciated the changing of the background color when the topic changed between appetizers, main courses, desserts, and drinks. And I think this isn't intended for younger audiences but would do well in a public library or in a personal library.
A cute recipe book to get some of the tasty things you see in anime. I'm definitely going to do some of the bento box things. The art is super cute and the instructions easy to follow
The book I needed! It's an amazing gift for any anime and cooking fan. I love that each recipe includes the anime it belongs to as well as anime references. This book is a dream come true.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the copy!
This is such a fun cookbook! As an avid anime watcher, I was familiar with quite a few of the dishes highlighted and most of the anime referenced. Each recipe is broken down with the name of the dish, the anime it's from and the specific episode, as well as a synopsis of the anime and the scene where the dish is presented. Sometimes there are even quotes from the episode! Most of the recipes come with illustrations of the final dish. Personally, I would have liked for each recipe to be illustrated because I like to know how the final product should look, especially when it's a dish I'm not familiar with. The recipes are easy to follow along and have detailed lists of ingredients (sometimes with substitution info) and the necessary cooking equipment if it's not standard. Some of the recipes look like they'd be fairly simple to do, while others are more complex. I'm definitely going to check out the author's Instagram to watch reels of some of the recipes! While most of the recipes do have animal products, there are some vegetarian and vegan recipes, and I think it wouldn't be too difficult to adapt the recipes to suite different dietary needs. Overall, a cute, fun cookbook that I would recommend to anime fans!
