This is a great way to have fun with food and enjoy making it messy. Excited to try for a Halloween party!
Absolutely loved these horror movie themed recipes. Definitely will buy a physical copy for all of my horror loving friends
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
The Beetle House is some where I have always dreamed or going, and this cookbook let's you bring a slice of that creative world home. This is a book I would 100% physically buy. You can see the thought and time that went into this book, and the love of Horror is so evident. There is many, many recipes I cannot wait to try!
Reasons to Read this book!
*Horror movie themed - I know I don’t usually highlight cookbooks unless they are themed, and this one is perfect for the Halloween season. Horror movies.
*Plant Based Recipes - What interested me in this one is that they were all plant based, which means that if you are a vegetarian, this is perfect for you.
*All different categories - The full menu is available from appetizers to entrees, desserts and cocktails. Many from your best loved movies like Friday the 13th or Evil Dead
*Decorating Ideas- most recipes include ways to make your presentation even spookier. Stay for the peanut butter popcorn based on Scream or the IT Floats root beer float with rum soaked cherries. But maybe steer clear of the vomit from the exorcist which is Matcha pudding that looks like pea soup.
hands up if you love horror films! because if it's so, this book is for you.
here you can find a lot of ideas for halloween or just a special occasion.
love it love it

Cookbook & eARC Review
Release Date: September 5, 2022
This book was so much fun to read! It combined so many of my favorites: cooking, cocktails, and horror!
First off, the recipes.
They were all plant-based. While this isn’t my usual go-to, they all looked and sounded delicious! The ingredients and instructions were clear and easy to follow.
Next, the content.
I loved the images and theme for this book. It was spooky and well thought out. The images were all well chosen. I loved the fact that each recipe was related to/named after a movie! It was a fun and unique idea.
Zach, you nailed it with this one! I look forward to trying many of these recipes and cocktails this Halloween!
Thank you to Zach Neil, NetGalley, and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this eARC in exchange for my honest review!
I loved Zach’s The Nightmare Before Dinner so was keen to see what yummy horrors he’d be serving up here. There are sixty plant-based recipes inspired by movies and TV shows on the menu, with a selection of Sickening Starters & Sides, Monstrous Mains, Depraved Desserts, Cursed Cocktails and Atrocious Accompaniments.
It wasn’t always immediately clear to me what the connection was between the recipe and its inspiration. Having said that, there were others that were immediately apparent and delightfully appropriate, like The Exorcist inspired Regan’s Pea Soup Vomit (With Bits).
One of the things I love about cookbooks is being able to drool over photos of the finished products. The presentation of the food in this book was one of the drawcards for me.
Some recipes, like The Crow inspired Devil’s Night Cauliflower Wings, featured a movie poster instead of the food. Some recipes had no accompanying photos at all.
I’m most interested in spectacularly failing to replicate the Trick ‘r Treat inspired All Hallows’ Eve Lasagna and Dexter inspired Blood (Orange) Cheesecake Trifle. Both of these came with photos so I’ll get to compare my efforts with what the food was actually supposed to look like.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Rock Point, an imprint of Quarto Publishing Group, for the opportunity to read this book. I’m rounding up from 3.5 stars.
Y’ALL WHO WANTS TO HAVE A SPOOKY DINNER PARTY?!
I love the idea of this old school horror themed cookbook, and just in time for Halloween season, too! The names of each dish, their annotated inspirations, accompanying photos, and staging suggestions have me simultaneously cracking up and scared LOL.
None of these healthy, plant-based recipes are overly complicated or require ingredients that would be difficult to find at any grocery store, if you don’t already have most of it at home. However, some of the recipes do require some kitchen equipment folks may not have (instant pots, etc.) and the recipes don’t provide for alt cooking methods.
Definitely saving the cauliflower wings, “the Hills Have Fries”, herbed bread, and peanut butter popcorn recipes to make soon, just to name a few!
Thank you to NetGalley, Rock Point, and Zach for an advance reader’s copy of this title in exchange for an honest review!
This cookbook was so entertaining to go through. I am a huge horror fan, and it was so entertaining to see the way Neil gave recipes a scary twist. The book is visually stunning, I loved the incorporation of classic horror film art, and the props for food set up.
While the recipes were more basic, I do love that they were all vegan. I wish there were more photos of the food, and that there was more though put into the actual recipe rather than the horror ties.
Overall super happy I had a chance to go through this cookbook and I would definitely buy it as an all things horror, and cookbook hoarder. I was truly the perfect audience for this.
Thank you so much Netgalley, Quarto Publishing, and Zach Neil for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
4 Stars
This book of horror-movie themed recipes is an absolute DELIGHT! I have already made Sriracha Maple Funnel Cake Burgers for dinner and they were out-of-control delicious! I even made a vegan version for myself. Death For Dinner is the perfect book for any foodie with a love for scary movies.
HANDS DOWN my most favorite cookbook ever in existence. If you are familiar with Beetle House (LA/NY) or the other cookbook Nightmare Before Dinner, you know what kind of punny and delicious treats you're in for.
While I wasn't seeking out a VEGAN cookbook, I absolutely don't mind that it is. All your classic horror movies are covered, sometimes more than once (I'll list them below) and there is a huge array of appetizers, meals, desserts, cocktails, and add-ons (sauces, aioli, etc.). Each recipe you can tell was created carefully with a certain horror movie in mind and if you are a true horror fan, you'll recognize little phrases from your favorite movies throughout, Groovy! ;)
Noteworthy Mentions: Pea Soup (Exorcist), Chili Necronomicon Carne (The Evil Dead), IT Floats (IT), and Sweet and Sour Maggots (The Lost Boys). No actual maggots used I promise.

Overall an enjoyable book to bring any Halloween or Horror Movie Night to the next level. Even if the author offers all recipes in their “vegan” original, they’re still pretty much open to non-vegan ingredients to accommodate everybody.
It’s great for movie lovers who like to do tie-ins with their food, but sometimes this fun aspect complicates things when the recipes opt for double-entendre titles that are not very descriptive.
I find it useful because it offers solutions to some food allergies in my family, and recipes like vegan butter are sure to become a staple at my house. Another plus is that temperatures and measurements are offered in celsius and Fahrenheit and kilos and imperial, respectively, making my life as someone who lives in continental Europe much more effortless. The only thing I didn’t like was the background effect of the pages, but maybe this was because I had an e-book version.
This book has a combination of things I enjoy, horror movies and puns!
There is a fantastic array of recipes to discover such as “The Hills Have Fries”, “Evil Bread” and “Drag Me to Bell” just to name a few pun related ones.
As well as including the “deadly ingredients” for each item it also includes a prep and cooking time guide.
The book features great recipe photos as well as film snaps, it’s clear that the author has put a lot of thought into the book.
It is plant based recipes but it could easily be substituted where necessary.
A great book for any horror fan or if you fancy trying out some creepy cooking!
This is a gimmick cookbook, and for what it is, it’s pretty good.
They’re all normal recipes, nothing necessarily horrific about them (taste wise, that’s a good thing!) but they don’t look horrific either.
They’re essentially a bunch of recipes with names that are a play on words of classic horror movies.
The food itself looks pretty good, the visuals of the dishes are really pleasing and fun to look at. I’ll definitely be trying a few of the recipes myself.
If you’re hosting a halloween party, or just like to cook and enjot horror movies, i’d recommend this as a fun addition to your kitchen.
Death for Dinner is a highly entertaining vegetarian cookbook ideal for horror movie fans. Zach Neil has collected a wide range of delicious recipes and pairs them with great food photography and hilarious plating tips. Many recipes include a sidebar called "Set The Stage," which offers tips such as serving sliders on a machete or including a prop knife in your popcorn. The cocktail section also features a nice variety of mixed drinks that are both gorgeous and gorey. I highly recommend this book for horror fans looking to get chopping in the kitchen!
This cookbook is phenomenal. If you love all things horror films this is the cookbook for you! I am a terrible cook, always getting stuck on cooking the same 8 items on repeat and needed something new and exciting. This Cookbook has tons of Plant based drinks, meals and appetizers to make any meal or get together to die for. I love that to the book has a list for Kitchen Must Haves, Setting the Scene and a list of movies/shows that inspired the foods.
Some of my favorite recipes are:
-All Hallows Eve Lasagna
-Freds Burger
-Charcoal Arugula Salad
These recipes will add the perfect amount of spooky to any meal/event.
Interesting recipes, easy to make. There were a few that were spot on with their movies, but many were just rebranded things like buffalo wings. There were a lot of options for vegans which is pretty cool and would be appreciated.
Some of the choices of movies surprised me (Alone in the Dark? Are you kidding me? Several recipes from Killer Klowns from Outspace? Why?) There are also posters for movies not mention nor had a recipe created for them.
The best part is the setting the scene inlay; that's where things got creepy and wonderful.
I'm don't typically eat strictly plant-based, but how could I turn down the opportunity to give this book a go?! It's a fun and scary selection of tasty recipes. Perfect for any horror or slasher movie fan! Visually, the book is stunning, with plenty of gory references throughout.
A fun and entertaining spin on horror movies and TV shows, this vegetarian cookbook offers entrees, mains, sides and desserts based on movies like Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Dexter and more. Creepy fun for the cook and horror fan
