I love all things Halloween so anything about the Headless Horseman already has my interest. The art was really good and the tale had a good mix of horror and romance.

This book being pitched as Sleepy Hollow meets queer romance was all I needed to want to read it!

On a personal note: Reading has always been a love of mine. A few years ago, reading and reviewing books became a hobby. It was something I deeply enjoyed and took a lot of pride in. However, life gets messy. I took a big step back from reading in general. My ARCs, especially, have suffered. It felt like an obligation, something I could no longer enjoy. The end of 2023 marked a huge change for me. I have looked forward to reading and have been prioritizing books for fun. Now, I finally feel like I am back to the place where I can balance reviewing books as well. My first task is clearing out my long overdue reviews for NetGalley. What better place to start than a graphic novel?

Hollow follows Izzy Crane and her family as they relocate to Sleepy Hollow. As much as Izzy wants to avoid Vicky Van Tessel and the legend of the Headless Horseman at first, she finds herself in the middle of solving a curse targeting the Van Tessel line before Halloween. All while fighting against the clock and managing her growing crush on Vicky, Izzy must team up with her new friends to solve the mystery before it is too late.

This was such a cute and fun read. The story itself is a nice spin on the classic Sleepy Hollow tale. I did not expect the twist with the horseman, but it was a great way to make this story its own thing in yet another way. I enjoyed the LGBTQ+ representation as well. The characters were intriguing and balanced. Vicky and Izzy complemented each other, but I loved that the authors kept the trio and their friendship a central part of the story too. I appreciated how they all had their own personalities even in such a short story. It would be fun to see that develop even more and watch the trio solve new mysteries!

The art style of this book was incredible. I loved how the day and night scenes were contrasted - warm, inviting colors versus the dark, cool tones. It definitely makes the story even more atmospheric. It added so much more depth and dimension.

I highly recommend this as a fun, spooky season read!

Thank you to the publisher, BOOM! Studios, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book.

I can't say that I loved this graphic retelling of Sleepy Hollow, but I also didn't have any major problems with it. It was very middle of the road for me.

Hollow is a sweet, wholesome Sleepy Hollow reinvention in comic form. It's queer, it's Halloween at its festive finest, and it's young adult done right. With notes of Hocus Pocus and Mystery Inc., you know I'm going to be about it.

Izzy Crane is new to Sleepy Hollow, a town that seems singularly focused on its famous Halloween story. Curious but bemused, Izzy mostly avoids the town hullaballoo, preferring books and studying to the festivities. Vicky Van Tassel is over Halloween for a different reason. Every year, she's meant to carry on the family tradition, appearing at a litany of events in period costume to represent her famous ancestor. In her spare time, Vicky experiments with constant style changes to exercise some self-expression. Everything changes when Izzy meets the Headless Horseman himself and learns that Vicky's life is in danger. With the help of prankster Croc, Izzy and Vicky set out with supernatural help to try and break a cycle of violence that has long targeted Vicky's family.

The friendship and romance vibes are all 10/10. We get a sweet, sapphic first love story between Izzy and Vicky that both bumble through with abandon. Meanwhile, Croc is generally clueless but enthusiastic, rounding out the trio with his positivity and creative thinking. We get to see Izzy bloom into a person with a social circle and pursuits outside her books. And we get to see Vicky set boundaries that improve her life tenfold. There's a coming-of-age story for them both alongside the paranormal hijinks.

This graphic novel gave me the cozy Halloween feels that restore my soul. I loved seeing this group of teenagers bond and take down an otherworldly threat with humor and determination. Thanks to Boom! Box for my copy to read and review!

I LOVED this! I would read a whole series set in Sleepy. The art is beautiful, and the story was lots of fun. I love the reimaging/retelling/sequel of classics being graphic novels especially. It makes them even more accessible and way more interesting than the originals. I'm trying to think of something I didn't like about it and I've got nothing. This was a hit all the way around. I'm looking forward to checking it out again and rereading it.

Shannon Watters and Branden Boyer-White capture a twist on the tale of the headless horseman, who is not such a bad guy but only trying to warn people about what is to come. The characters are well-drawn and consistent, with expressive faces that convey exactly what they are feeling. Though the story is simple enough, it has enough intrigue to keep the reader interested.

This graphic novel was a fantastic read - tying together different threads in a great way. Supernatural queer romance can appeal to many different readers - there truly is something for everyone. Izzy Crane was a lovable character and I'd recommend anyone go on this adventure with her.

I loved this twist on the story of Sleepy Hollow! It’s been so long since I’ve read or watched anything related to the original so it was fun to revisit the world 😄 I think it could’ve stood to be slightly longer to flesh out the conflict more but it was also enjoyable as is.

I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. (The version I read was a finished copy.)

Hollow was one of the more fun graphic novels I've read recently, putting a new twist on the Sleepy Hollow legend. A queer YA graphic novel reimagining of Washington Irving's myth, Hollow is a fast, engaging, twisty, entertaining read that does an excellent job at including diverse representation and subverting what readers know about the legend of the Headless Horseman.

Set in the actual town of Sleepy Hollow, the novel follows Izzy Crane, who just moved to the town and is a firm non-believer in the legend of the Headless Horseman. When she starts to be haunted by the Horseman himself, Izzy joins forces with town royalty Vicky Van Tassel and lovable footballer Croc Byun. The three uncover an ancient curse, with an evil force set on destroying the Van Tassel line-- they only have until Halloween to figure out a way to break the curse, or they'll all be in danger.

Overall, I thought Hollow was a really enjoyable read-- I would be happy to pick it up again and escape into its gorgeous illustrations, character dynamics, and adventurous story.

Hollow is a gorgeous autumnal graphic novel that retells the story of the headless horseman with a new twist. The book has gorgeous, humorous art and positive LGBTQ representation. A fun read all around! I recommend for anyone in the fall season wanting to get into the spooky mood and for those looking for books with LGBTQ representation.

Thanks to the author and illustrator, BOOM! Studios, and Netgalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book was so much fun!

I absolutely loved this twist on the headless horseman tale and found myself laughing and smiling throughout. Having the headless horseman working to help the Von Tassels was such a fun twist and I really enjoyed this from start to finish.

I really loved the pumpkin, I thought his dialogue and facial expressions were so funny. The dynamic between him and the headless horseman was so much fun.

Also, I really enjoyed the relationships, especially between Izzy and Victoria! I really enjoyed Croc’s character too. I loved them as a group and had so much fun following all of their crazy plans.

Additionally, the art style was absolutely gorgeous! There were so many pages that I couldn’t stop looking at, taking in every intricate detail. The colours were stunning and so perfect for an autumnal/halloween read. I can definitely see myself coming back to this book in the future!

I really hope that this first instalment isn’t the end and we see more of these characters and their shenanigans! I would love to read more from this series.

This was truly a treat of a story with the incorporation of the story of Sleepy Hollow. The main characters are the ancestors of the original story and they are trying to help the Headless Horseman take care of an evil that has been wreaking havoc in the town. This book would be the perfect, cozy read for spooky season and you'll feel happy by the end.

I think I’ll always desire and crave Sleepy Hollow retelling books or just Sleepy Hollow stories in general! Look, I love a good Halloweeny, Autumnal read and Sleepy Hollow stories are literal embodiments of that for me. Sleepy Hollow has been a long time favorite story of mine, but I always struggle with finding retellings of this classic tale. So naturally when whispers of this graphic novel reached me, I was instantly intrigued. I stayed up till 3:22 a.m. (I know, very specific time) power reading this graphic novel and it didn’t disappoint. I had such a fun time reading this and it ended far too quickly for my liking!

“You have no idea how much a name can curse you.”

Izzy Crane just moved to Sleepy Hollow due to their mother relocating for a new job opportunity. Little did Izzy know that Sleepy Hollow goes all out when it comes to the notorious legend and Izzy isn’t one to believe in ghosts, legends, and things that can easily be explained with enough research. That is until Izzy encounters the actual Horseman, one on one, and learns that maybe spirits are real, and just maybe Izzy wants to help one to save Vicky Van Tassel, the girl they’re crushing on, from an evil force who’s seeking revenge to the Van Tassel family.

This was such a fun, cute read, that’s such a fresh take on this story! I know a lot readers say this is a retelling, and in a way it kind of is, but it isn’t. This story takes place in modern day Sleepy Hollow, New York and even in the story itself it says this is taking two-hundred years later after the original story takes place. So you should take this as either a sequel or it’s own unique take on story of Sleepy Hollow. Plus, there’s so many unique elements we see throughout this story that just makes this feel like it’s own story in time. Like the Horseman being their own entity being made up of three spirits and how they’ve been trying to get help for so long. It was just such a great spin on things. We do get some bits and pieces of the original story of Sleepy Hollow, but we also get so new little twists on the story, too. It was just really exciting and I don’t want to say too much that may potentially spoil you.

“I’ve spent my whole life in the shadow of a two-hundred-year-old dead girl and her fictional doppelganger. I want to pick who I get to be.”

There were so many great themes throughout this book, as well. One of the biggest themes was the weight of a legacy and how sometimes people can get so caught up in wanting to continue a legacy that the current generation can feel like who they are as a person is getting lost in all the expectations. I loved this theme and how we see the Van Tassel legacy impacts Vicky, and how she just wants to be her own person. How she feels like she’s not allowed to explore who she is because of the legacy of her family and when no one around her seems to listen to her wants, you’d be reaching a breaking point too. There’s also a minor theme surrounding the weight that can come with a name especially when that name is tied to a family legacy. I absolutely adore books that play on the importance of names. It’s something I really love when books do it and I thought this was well executed especially with the way it ties in.

“People… feelings… they’re not equations on a test. Say what’s honest. What’s real, that you need them to know.”

We have a lot of representation throughout this book too. If you didn’t know by now, there is a sapphic romance between Izzy and Vicky. I thought this was such a sweet and charming romance that doesn’t consume or eclipse the plot of the story. It was really cute and even more cute the way they flirt, and Croc loses his mind with how they both act. It was so much fun and I just loved it with my whole heart. Speaking of Izzy, Izzy is half-Latinx and while it’s never made clear at any time in the book, there is a scene where Croc calls Izzy and Vicky ‘ladies’, and Izzy acts offended to being called a ‘lady.’ This leads me to believe that Izzy is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. There’s also a plethora of BIPOC characters and we even see disability rep especially with a character named Marjorie, who’s a local witch, has a crush on Croc, and uses crutches/mobility aids. And speaking of this chaotic king himself, Croc is a main side character who’s Asian. There’s just a lot of diversity throughout this book and it filled my heart with so much warmth to see so much diversity packed into this graphic novel.

And while this isn’t a major moment of the story or plot, I have to mention the corgi. I have a corgi and I feel the need to express how adorable the corgi in this book is! The corgi’s name is Chiffon and he likes hot dogs, and gets dressed up as a little Dracula corgi. It was so wholesome and precious. It was everything and I really adore the brief moments we have with this little cutie!

Overall, I had such a wonderful time reading this graphic novel. One might say I was downright giddy about the whole thing and I’m so glad I finally got the chance to sit down to read this comic. Again, I love stories, retellings that involve the original tale of Sleepy Hollow. It’s a bit of a comfort story for me and I wish we had more Sleepy Hollow stories. If you’re looking for a great Autumnal read that you can fly through, that has a bunch of wholesome moments, great rep, and an ending that sets things up for a sequel then give this graphic novel a chance. Even if you’re not a big Sleepy Hollow fan, I definitely recommend checking this book out for the great story and the sapphic cuteness!

Izzy Crane has just moved to Headless Horseman-obsessed, Sleepy Hollow, but as a city kid and a bit of a skeptic, she's not buying the legend or the vibes of the town. However, she soon becomes tied up with the town's teen royalty, Vicky Van Tassel (yeah, that one) and jock, Croc Byun and she finds her life in danger when her family's connection to the legend becomes all too real.

This was a fun retelling of the classic Washington Irving legend. The artwork was beautiful, the characters were intriguing and it stayed true enough to the original to not ruin it.

I found "Hollow" to be a cute and sweet read. The drawing style is equally adorable and adds to the charm of the book. Although it's a light read, it presents important topics such as queerness in a positive light. The story is enjoyable and would be perfect for slightly younger readers than myself, so I think my teenage self would have adored this book. It's not just delightful, but it also presents the legend in an engaging way that kept me hooked until the very end. Overall, a heartwarming and engaging read.
