Charming! Hollow follows Izzy Crane, a newcomer to Sleepy Hollow, in her attempts to understand the town's obsession with spooky folklore. She ends up wrapped up in a mystery involving Vicky Van Tassel, a descendant of a character in the original legend. As they work together to break a historical curse on the Van Tassel family, romance blossoms between them.
I loved that all of our characters have distinct personalities and style, and I adored the headless horseman's pumpkin head (the illustrations were so cute). The mystery is straightforward, which I enjoyed and appreciate for a graphic novel, and side character Croc brought some fun high school pranks and shenanigans. Vicky's conflict with her family and not wanting to continue in her mom's footsteps felt realistic and I like how it resolved. I do think the relationships between Vicky, Izzy, and Croc needed more narrative time, as the romance between Vicky and Izzy kind of popped up randomly, and I didn't understand what was going on between Vicky and Croc (did they have some history?). I also hope that the final edition of the book includes more of the setting in the illustrations, as I got a bit tired of seeing the characters' faces against randomly colored plain backgrounds, when the full page spreads and panels where we see the full setting were really impressive.
Overall, this was really fun and cute and a great follow up to the lore of Sleepy Hollow! Perfect to read anytime in autumn, especially October, when you want to get in the Halloween mood. I'd also love to read a sequel!

This was so good! I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was a fresh take on this spooky classic!
Our main trio is truly incredible. I'm so glad it didn't go a cliched route of Izzy and Croc fighting for Vicky's attention, and that Croc doesn't get upset when Vicky inadvertently rejects him.
But the romance isn't the focus in this story. Our main characters take it upon themselves to break the curse that has been following Vicky's - a Van Tassel - family for centuries.
Also, the art is stunning. Just FYI. I'm also 99% sure there's a reference to the "I guess" meme. And at one point, Izzy says "...It's time to research!" and I'm ready to make the panel my new favorite reaction image. And an adorable dog plays a role in one scheme.
With unexpected allies and lots of spooky happenings, this graphic novel is the perfect Halloween/autumnal read!
✨ Review ✨ Hollow by Shannon Watters and Branden Boyer-White; Berenice Nelle (artist)
This YA graphic novel takes us to modern day Sleepy Hollow where descendants of the original Sleepy Hollow story come back to solve a mystery facing the town. Vicky Van Tassel, Isabel "Izzy" Crane, and town prankster Croc Byun set off to try to save Vicky from whatever is out to get her. Complete with a headless horseman talking pumpkin ghost (best referred to as "they" since they are more than a single entity).
This is the perfect graphic novel for spooky season and it brings in great LGBTQ+ representation. While targeted for YA, I think this could even be given to middle grades students with some parental supervision (there's one scene where two of the characters are sleeping in bed together in their underwear, but not too suggestive I don't think 🤷♀️ )
I liked this - it had similar sorts of vibes to the Pumpkin Heads graphic novel - a cute queer fall YA offering.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: graphic novel, YA, queer representation
Location: Sleepy Hollow
Reminds me of: Pumpkin Heads
Pub Date: 04 Oct 2022
Thanks to BOOM! Studios and #netgalley for an advanced e-copy of this book!
A super fun and cute queer Halloween read! I enjoyed the beautifully colorful illustrations, the inclusivity within the story and the characters, and the story itself has more depth than I had anticipated! I really hope this story gets a sequel because I’d love to know what else these characters get up to.
Hollow: 5 Stars ♥
I requested this because it looked stunning and was tagged as lgbtqiap+ and I am so immensely happy that I did so. I cannot wait to buy myself a physical copy of this story when it comes out.
We're following Izzy as she comes into the town of Sleepy Hollow and begins being dragged into the middle of an adventure. This story draws on the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and references it - but it is set after the original story took place, so it is not a direct retelling.
Izzy, who shares a last name with Ichabod Crane, quickly becomes friends with Victoria, a descendant of Katrina van Tassel, who is not all too happy with her life in the spotlight of Sleepy Hollow. Another friend is Croc, who is a childhood friend of Victorias and a bit of a jokster.
The three of them run into a headless man on a horse in the middle of the night and the story goes from there.
Not only does this graphic novel feature an amazing and diverse cast of characters but it is entertaining from page 1. I love the friendships and the romances that develope between the characters and the little shenanigans that they get up to. This Story pays loving homage to the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and yet succeeds at being its own fully compelling entity.
The Art is utterly stunning and I am crossing my fingers that "the end - for now" means that we will go on future adventures with these characters because I am definitely more than ready to do so.
✨ Representation: Izzy, our main character, is half-Latinx and sapphic, Victoria is sapphic, Croc is Korean American, Marjorie uses crutches, Leon is black. ✨
sometimes a family is a headless dude, a pumpkin head, an actual horse, a cute himbo who plays in a "co-ed ultimate frisbee league," a nerd who really likes concrete proof, a rebel (but rightfully so) girl who's sick and tired of everything. and thats okay!
this was FUN. the art style is so cool and the characters, yo! THE CHARACTERS. vicky and croc's friendship was so cute and vicky and izzy in general i swear they're so adorable i love sapphics fr. anyway i love croc too he's such a himbo i love his character 10/10 would kiss him on the mouth. i love the uh.. pumpkin guy... gordo. thats definitely his name, yes. he's so real.
the only thing i didn't like was the tiny little conflict between izzy and vicky, though that's probably a me thing since i don't find the conflicts in the middle of the book really appealing. i think it'd be cooler if they just got together close to the end instead of getting together in the middle of the book and then having a falling out. but then again they're aDORABLE so it's fine
i finished this in like 40 minutes so it's also pretty short and i'd totally recommend it if you want a fun short halloween-y story
This was so much fun! I love retellings so much, and queering and modernizing a retelling of such a classic work in this way just felt right. If you like queer romance, golden retriever sidekicks, and harebrained schemes, this is the graphic novel for you!!
First and foremost, I really love the art style in the graphic novel. The colours were a delight and there’s a pleasantness about the way each character is drawn. There’s a great amount of diversity from race and different abilities (abled and people using assistive devices). Big plus there!
The story itself was very basic but just a whole ton of fun. It isn’t supposed to be serious and it’s fun natured tone mixed in with some high-school drama was a delight to read.
The Insta love was a little fast for me, not too believable and even the conflict just felt like it lacked any depth but going back to my previous paragraph, I think it’s just meant to be light and easy. The characters do have a bit of depth to them with each dealing with their own issues and backgrounds, which you can see are either handled by their family or because of their family.
All in all, a cute sapphic light read, that gives me elevated Scooby gang vibes!
Hollow is a cute throwback to the old Autumn story we know and love. The characters are fun, loveable, and adventurous enough to be an exciting release for teens this October.
While I might have preferred a retelling, this was fairly close, but I really did love this concept of Sleepy Hollow 200 years later in the current day.
The vibes were perfect, just enough Fall and Halloween and Headless Horseman to keep me entertained. This was a quick read, one that readers might like to revisit each time the season rolls around. All in all, cute, inclusive, and happy, Hollow is sure to be a great addition to your cozy Halloween collection.
I loved this story, very cute. It's a great spooky season read when you want the Halloween vibe without it actually being scary. I really enjoyed the illustrations and the fact that Vicky is constantly changing her look so its exciting to see how she looks every time she pops up in the story. I don't normally buy graphic novels but I will be adding this to my collection.
Retellings and sequels of classics have been some of my favorite reads this year so I was super excited about this continuation of the story of Sleepy Hollow. It gives off very Scooby Doo vibes which was a delight to read.
Izzy Crane has recently moved to the town of Sleepy Hollow with her parents. And just in time for mysterious things to be happening at Halloween! There's a suspicious substitute teacher, the beginnings of a sapphic romance, and a history of mysterious accidents in town.
The art is just so adorable, and it looks much better than the cover initially made it appear, so don’t let that put you off. The characters all have very unique designs, which was great to see! The colors were bright and distinct, nothing get lost or blurred in the background.
Each character has their own issues they’re dealing with. Izzy’s trying to come to terms with moving to a new place where she has no connections or roots, Vicky is trying to deal with a family legacy that is making her unhappy, and Croc is beginning to understand that his affections aren’t returned. And it was wonderful to see such a variety of different skin colors, body types, representation even in background characters.
A really minor thing, but the owner of the witch store at the end of the story seems to be flirting with Croc, and we don’t get any confirmation of her age? I felt a little uncomfortable, thinking she’s an adult older than the night school students. Maybe she’s just working in the store as a part time job, and she’s the same age as all the other main characters, but I would have liked a small confirmation of that.
Thanks to NetGalley and BOOM! Studios for this advance reader's copy!
This was so good I’m not usually a comic reader but I wanted something to get me in the Halloween spirit and this did that
A graphic novel about two lesbian schoolgirls falling in love while their town is under attack by the mysterious evil forces. Kudos to the representation (sapphic, fat, disabled-bodied).
This was a fun, not-too-scary graphic aimed at the young adult market. Have to admit, I was certainly not an intended audience.
Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy.
Delightful, charming, so very gay. Perfect for spooky season without being too spooky itself! Full of heart and humour and I just can’t wait for a sequel.
Hallow is a sapphic graphic novel about new beginnings, learning to use your voice, and interpersonal communications. It spins the tale of Sleepy Hallow on itself while parodying the new generation's tourism values.
Isabel Crane is the new kid in town and it's not something she's looking forward to. It seems that the whole city is obsessed with their local sleepy hallow story and they won't let anyone forget about it. But when Izzy meets the town's local start to fame she can't help but only notice her attraction to the girl. Vicky is getting really tired of the fame and first doesn't want anything to do with Izzy since being with a Crane will only make her generational fame larger. She already hated that, but the girls along with the prankster Crocidile find out that something more sinister lurks in the dark of the night and it isn't the headless horseman!
I loved reading it and have added it to my list of books to add to my library!
Thank you to BOOM! Studios and NetGalley for the ability to read this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review!
Hollow is a cozy sapphic Sleepy Hollow retelling coming out just in time for Halloween! Perfect for fans of Mooncakes. Everyone should be adding this to their October tbr.
I absolutely loved this Halloween sapphic graphic novel! It was such a fun story with adorable/lovable characters. The art was great too.
Thanks to Netgalley and BOOM! Studios for an eARC
I absolutely loved this graphic novel! The artwork is fantastic. The story is a fun retelling of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The characters are likable. The romance was a nice addition. This was just overall a great graphic novel! It’s perfect for the fall season, but would be a fun read anytime of year.
This graphic novel was a delight. Think: Sleepy Hollow meets Hocus Pocus. You have a ragtag team against a powerful magical foe. It’s so fun and such a good read for the season. You won’t regret picking up a copy of Hollow! See if you recognize the Always Sunny meme reference while you read it. Incredible!!!
I have spent a lot of this year looking for good queer graphic novels, and this one absolutely fits the bill. This sapphic reimagining of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is adorable and spooky and has a gorgeous art style, fun characters, and an engaging plot. I read it in two sittings. It's a bit slow at the beginning, but by about the 1/3 mark, the story really picks up. I would absolutely recommend Hollow to anyone who enjoys graphic novels, sapphic teen stories with no homophobia, or Halloween.
