Hollow is a magical retelling of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, involving the teen descendents of the original novel's main characters as they uncover a centuries-long plot to take out the Van Tassel family.
I really adored this graphic novel! This was so much fun to read and experience, plus the art is gorgeous. Hands down this is one of my favorite halloween reads, it manages to be slightly spooky, but delivers a cozy and warm ending. The representation is absolutely phenomenal as well! I loved Vicky and Izzy's entire dynamic. Croc's ending was also very satisfying and I enjoyed how diverse all the characters were drawn.
My favorite part was the panel on page 77 of Izzy putting together the plan to help protect Vicky! It's a reference to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and made me absolutely burst into laughter! It was such a great little easter egg in the middle of the story that really felt tonally perfect. I noticed a couple other panels reference memes and it definitely made me smile.
Overall this was such a fun read! If this set of artists and writers ever come together again to do another retelling with a twist, I'd pick it up immediately. I'll definitely be recommending this to my audience as a fun October read!
Thank you to NetGalley and BOOM! for providing me with a copy for an honest review.
When Isabel Crane's family moves to Sleepy Hollow, she's unamused by the town's obsession with the story inspired by its name, and with the legend of the Headless Horseman. Izzy wants nothing to do with any of it; not the new school, not her parents' desire that she make real friends, and not all the Headless Horseman rumours and images everywhere. But when she develops a crush on a Van Tassel family descendent, she's pulled into a paranormal situation that forces her to rethink her skepticism.
This graphic novel was so fun!! It's perfect for teens and perfect for Halloween. I love the rep, the sapphic relationship is so freakin adorable, and the artwork is so well done. The only thing I wish is that they gave more import to the original story, because it all gets written off pretty fast. But this is such a minor complaint because overall the story is fantastic and the characters are just lovely. That's the only possible description for them, they're all just so very enjoyable to read about!
I really can't stop gushing about this story enough. I plan to recommend it to everyone in October.
This was a great spooky type of graphic novel. It is a clever retelling of Sleepy Hollow, with a twist. Hollow surprised me by how much I enjoyed it. I thought it would be more scary, and this was more comically scary, like Scooby Doo.
I thought the characters in this book were well created and diverse. Izzy and Vicky were adorable together and Croc was such a funny guy, adding comic relief at many points throughout. I thought the art style in this novel was great and nice to look at. It definitely met the spooky tone of the story.
Though the story isn't super complex, it is a cute and easy read heading into the spooky season. There is lots of amazing rep in this story too, which makes it more inclusive and diverse than the original. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, BOOM! Box, for a copy of this book. All opinions are 100% mine.
This was my personal start into spooky season at it was perfect!
This Sleepy Hollow retelling was such a nice take on the myth. When it comes to characters as well as the story! I totally digged it and for a long time did not see where this was going. Of course Gordo is my absolute favourite but hinetly I loved all of them!
Ant the drawings!
This will be an annual reread from now on!

This felt like a scooby doo-ish retelling of the Sleepy Hollow and I'm not complaining because I really liked it and the art style is so good. The talking pumpkin was definitely the highlight of the novel.
A Sleepy Hollow retelling. It was well done. The twist was fun. Art was pretty. Story was engaging. I think my students will really enjoy it.
4 stars
The story was cute and fun and honestly made me wish it was Halloween year round. Overall the characters feel well rounded and interesting and the art was friendly and fun. It reminded me a lot of Archie comics with fun adventures with your friends where you might die, but like maybe? Won’t? Overall I loved the book and am excited to see if it continues
This is the perfect spooky season read- a little romance, a little mystery, a little paranormal activity and a lot of heart! I loved these characters and the illustrations are beautiful in a perfect fall palette!
I adored this book! I adore the story of Sleepy Hollow and finding a Sapphic retelling of it made my autumn! This was a great retelling of the story as well. I loved the twist in this story. It made it so fun and brought a well known story to a different light. Plus this book was just so much fun and while it had some horror elements overall this is just so much fun.
Pumpkins, ghosts, romance… my new favorite Fall comic!
Best selling author Watters and the debut Boyer-White have taken us to a Sleepy Hollow imagined for today, with Nelle and Musto’s illustrations bringing pumpkin spiced charm to an already sweet adventure.
Izzy Crane is new to Sleepy Hollow and skeptical of town’s absolute obsession with the headless horseman; fortunately she makes new friends fast in the high school prankster Croc Byun and the town sweetheart Victoria Van Tassel. The new friendships are put to the test as they try to figure out what evil lurks amongst the Hollow as Halloween approaches.
Is there more fact than fiction behind the Horseman’s tale?
Is the town sweetheart actually sweet on Izzy?
Who will Croc prank next?
These questions and more are answered in a thoroughly heart warming romp through Sleepy Hollow. And we’re shown the good that happens when we don’t run from our fears!
Readers from all paths of Life might see themselves reflected somewhere on these pages which is such a need in today’s published works. If you ever watched Scooby Doo and wished the puzzle would be solved by Daphne and Velma making out – this is for you champ; and go read some “Lumberjanes” when you finish this.
It’s not just queer kids that will feel the love in reading this Fall flavored treat either, we’ve got a graphic novel set in high school featuring more than just able bodied white kids! mock gasp and pearl clutching! This element is at this point a must in such a visual far reaching medium; it’s so easy to help someone see a little bit of themselves by picking up something other than the “peach” colored crayon. (This is an oversimplification but you get the point.)
I’m tickled to have gotten a digital ARC of this but it’s one of the instances where I wish I had it in the physical; this is just a fun one to keep in your bag and flip through with you favorite fall beverage on the table.
A big old “Thank You” to Netgalley, the Publisher and of course the authors for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review. Your efforts are in good hands and I appreciate the trust.

I quite enjoyed the experience of reading this. It wasn't mindblowing but I liked the characters which for me is essential in actually liking a book or not. The illustrations were quite good.
Croc was an absolutely delight and the best friend to Vicky and Izzy. He was so funny.
A fantastic and sweet fantasy from the creator of Lumberjanes. This is worth a read. If you are looking for a quick comic that promises to be full of adventure.

Hollow is the perfect horror graphic novel to read this fall. It is a fun, spooky tale that incorporated the elements, and story from the novel, ”The Legends of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irvin and the movie adaption, “Sleep Hollow”. The art style is beautiful, the dialogues are easy to follow, and the characters are lovely.
Though, the quality of the novel from the Netgalley app was a let down, it doesn't change the overall experience I had from this story.
Really enjoyed this but dang it was hard to read/enjoy on the netgally shelf app. Could have really felt it’s charm via kindle. I already bought a copy because I love spooky graphics novels!
I loved the twist on this classic story. Especially the fact that it was adapted to be more diverse. This is something I have yet to see and something I greatly appreciate. The art was visually pleasing and the characters were lovable. This is a book I would love to keep in my collection as hard copy. Pefect pre spooky season read for anyone.
I loved this book! The characters are relatable and fun to follow. It’s a fresh new take on the legend of sleepy hollow and I think our teen patrons will love it. I look forward to more adventures with these characters!
'Hollow' is the perfect queer Fall story.
The gothic horror elements satisfy a craving for spookiness and adventure while providing a fun and interesting twist on the Sleepy Hollow story of the headless horseman. Even if a little cliché at times, the authors are aware of them and use cliché tastefully in order to lead the reader down one path and have them expect things that more often than not will not be true. While the heavy use of cliché wasn't an issue, the story did feel like it was lacking more depth, as the twists and turns felt obvious and easy to figure out.
Where 'Hollow' does shine, however, is in the fantastic cast of characters it has. It was incredibly easy to connect with all of them, especially the protagonist, as empathizing with them through their "fish out of water" experience allowed for a fresh perspective on the town and the absurd yet charming small town year round holiday. Themes surrounding identity and standing up for ourselves and our friends were very prominent in the book, and gave the relationships between the three main characters a lot of weight (and a fun love triangle).
Overall, 'Hollow' is a lively Halloween read that will get you ready for spooky season, with a darling queer romance, and a treacherous evil plot that could get in the way of it.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with a digital arc of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
This lovely graphic novel follows the mysteries that reside within a small town community that appears to be infatuated with lore and the hidden horrors that surround them all. After the main character, Izzy moves to this town and is faced with the town's well-known "mascot," the Headless Horseman, she immediately begins to research what kind of phenomenon she has to deal with. Surprisingly the Headless Horseman is not as terrifying as he seems, and Izzy becomes aware that the life of his crush is in great danger, and in order to save her, she must be able to face the villain that wants her gone. This Halloween-spirited story follows the beautiful bond between three teenagers who come together to fight off the evil that plagues their beloved town before it consumes them all.
I absolutely adored this comic. The art style was so endearing and it was able to acutely represent the nostalgia of a small-town community and the whimsical adoration that is felt all year round, because of their connection with each other. Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year and it was incorporated so well into this story, especially with the subtleties of these inexperienced teens that learn to grow and love each other in times of difficulty. The sapphic relationship between Izzy and Vicky was so subtle and impactful with emotions, especially with how well the author was able to portray their connections, with the illustrator being able to heighten it visually. The story was short and sweet, with not a minute of dullness to be seen, especially with how evenly paced this entire comic was. I will admit that the closure could have been a bit more drawn out, especially as it was immediately faced after the entire climax, but other than that I loved everything else about this graphic novel.
Overall, this is exactly what I needed to read, especially with the constant buzz of admiration that I have for that special time of the year - Halloween. I think that this story was a breath of fresh air, especially for lovers of coming-of-age stories, as well as readers who thrive on the subtle senses of nostalgia that novels are able to give to us. I am grateful to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with the opportunity to read such a lovely graphic novel.
