Great pictures, great story. I want to buy it in paper as I throughly enjoyed it.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Perfect for fall, I can't wait to sell this alongside Pumpkinheads. It has a perfect Halloween vibe with a little romance and a lot of saving the day.
DNF. The art is so blurry that it's impossible to keep on reading. Maybe the graphic novel itself is amazing, but the arc is too blurry to appreciate it's awesomeness.
Stunning art, beautifully written, fantastic character development, and overall one of my favorite books of 2022. I loved how the story progressed. I have absolutely no negative things to say. I will be fangirling over this one for awhile.
I absolutely adored this. The art is fab, the diversity is excellent, and I love a modern retelling.
4 stars - It was really good
This was a wonderful retelling of Sleepy Hollow! I really enjoyed all the twists in this and the building romance between Izzy and Vicky. The Horsemen was really fascinating and I really loved them. Overall, this was just a wonderful graphic novel that is perfect for Halloween time!
Cute, fun, sapphic as hell and perfect for Halloween!
It's a retelling of the Sleeping Hollow. The plot isn't very complex but the art is beautiful and the variety of rep and especially the sapphic romance at the centre make it really worthwhile. Alsp, it's amazing to see a butch Latina lesbian as an MC of a graphic novel!
Absolutely lovely graphic novel, full of Halloween vibes and great characters. Would definitely recommend to teens during the spooky season.
I absolutely loved Hollow! It kept the story traditional while adding a new side to the Headless Horseman others haven't seen before! The graphics were perfect for the story and certainly made it exciting! I loved the storyline and how it follows a Crane and a Van Tassel. The Horseman, the horse and the Jack O' Lantern were of course my favorites, I liked how they all made up the image and had such personality! Anyone who loves the Headless Horseman and Sleepy Hollow will love this read!
Thank you to Boom! Studios and NetGalley for giving me a digital copy in exchange for an honest review! I really enjoyed this story! I don't know enough about the original myth of the Headless Horseman/Sleepy Hollow, so now I want to look into that more. However, this new twist on the classic story was both sweet or heartwarming and a good mystery. I think this is a perfect graphic novel to get readers in the fall or Halloween spirit, especially middle grade or young YA readers. I'm not sure if it was intentional by the authors (I hope it was), but towards the beginning of the book there was a small Mean Girls reference and as soon as I saw that, I knew I was going to really enjoy this book! I also loved all the representations in this story, including a Latina lesbian main character, sapphic love interest, Korean American side character, Latina side character, and a disabled side character. I flew through this story and I think there's potential for a continuation of stories in this world. Overall, I would rate it 3.5/5 stars, rounding up to 4. I'm excited to check out other works from these authors and the illustrator!
This is a really fun read with a great premise. Because who doesn’t like a good twist on a classic story?
I really like the Art, vivid and whimsical. Perfect for the type of story this is. The colorist also did something really cool where the background color sometimes change depending on who is speaking, it’s a small detail but it definitely adds to the magic of the story.
The characters are also really interesting and I wouldn’t mind if there’s a continuation to the story as they could get into some fun shenanigans.
This book is perfect for middle grade readers but people of all ages will be able to enjoy this fun and sweet graphic novel. Perfect Halloween reads for children.
Thanks Boom! Studios and Netgalley for giving me a digital copy in exchange for an honest opinion.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this one early. This is my first time with these authors/artists and in all honesty I wanted to read this because of the cover artwork but also as a huge fan of the Sleepy Hollow legacy. Color me surprised when I couldn’t put this down. The story, the love interest, the way the horseman jumped off the pages all wrapped into one made this an enjoyable read. I look forward to more from this publisher as well as more from these artists/writers.
Highly recommend
*I received a copy of this book on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the authors, publisher, artist, and NetGalley for this opportunity*
HOLLOW, a modern sequel to the Legend of Sleep Hollow, tells the story of three teenagers and their mission to end the curse on the Van Tassell family-- with the aide of a familiar figure...
A delightful story perfect for fans of Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell-- HOLLOW is sure to delight anyone who wants to get into the spooky spirit! The amount of representation is perfection (LGBTQ+, Asian-American, disabled, etc.) even if it's not truly representative of New England! The story is perfectly situated for a graphic novel, and the art itself is incredibly charming.
This delightful read is sure to be a treat, not a trick!
3.5/5, rounded up
thanks to boom! studios and netgalley for the arc!
this graphic novel has a fun and intriguing story, with interesting characters! unfortunately, the file i was reading it on wasn't the best for the art, so it was blurry. besides that, which won't be a problem when the book releases, i would recommend this to anyone who seems interested!
I really liked the different angle to the sleepy hollow story, and especially loved all the representation! The characters were cute and fun and it was just spooky enough to give fall/halloween vibes. I don't read that many graphic novels, but maybe I should because this one was really good! (Thanks to netgalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.)
This was super fun and super cute. I loved getting to know Izzy, Vicky, Croc, and a few other characters I won’t name. This graphic novel was entertaining and finally taught me what a hessian is lol
A sequel to The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow which doubles as a riff on the original, every bit as wholesome and queer as you'd expect from being co-written by Lumberjanes' Shannon Watters. Possibly wholesome to a fault; not only is Sleepy Hollow remarkably diverse for a little New England town, but absolutely everyone there ultimately turns out to be lovely, with the sole exception of the force of elemental evil, whom everyone takes a surprisingly long time to identify given the only proper git in the area is a new supply teacher called Professor Mort Tenebrous. Still, you can see why audiences faced with [gestures at literally everything] might occasionally fancy reading instead about a world where everyone basically gets along – and also, in a far more minor deviation from our own benighted timeline, there are ghosts and magic and stuff. So: Izzy Crane is new in town, and falls for Vicky Van Tassel, whose family's connection to the story mean she gets pride of place in the town's many, many celebrations linked to it; this is a place milking its USP to the extent that the local pizza place shows the headless horseman flinging a pizza, and even a Be The Change You Want To See In The World mural sees him brandishing a globe. Vicky, however, is understandably fed up with being a stand-in for the fictionalised version of her however-many-greats grandma, and so the last thing she needs is to start dating someone called Crane. And then the actual Horseman turns up, even if he blends in surprisingly well given the town spends the whole of October* Hallowe'ened up to the nines. And yes, it would make much more sense to read this in October, but such are sometimes the exigencies of Netgalley ARCs. The art is occasionally wobbly – including, unfortunately, the very first page – but mostly adorable, especially once we get into not just the romance plot, but a Hallowe'en heist abetted by a Corgi for all of us already missing Brooklyn Nine-Nine. I mean, I'm trying to sound vaguely like a sensible critic here, but basically it's just really sweet and pleasingly spooky and very Hallowe'en indeed and I approve.
*Which October? Well, I initially assumed 2019, because we know Hallowe'en falls on a Friday, but we're also told that the curse is active when Hallowe'en coincides with the dark of the Moon, which rules out both 2019 and the next option, 2025. Yet it definitely seems to be set nowabouts. Call it another variation between their world and ours, a little stranger than the talking pumpkin but far less so than the niceness.
Of course one of the co-creaters of LumberJanes would come up with a fun telling of the legend of sleepy hollow, along with a lesbian romance thrown in.
In this telling, the headless horseman is not only real, but wanting to help the descendant of the Van Tassel family, who is being threatened by an evil spirit.
Great illustration. Love the personality of the headless horseman, and the blowing pumpkin head.
Add in the teen drama of kids that are clueless that the horseman is real, and not part of halloween, and you have a fun romantic, slightly scary romp.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
Oh. My. Gosh. I loved this so freaking much. It's a take on Sleepy Hollow and set in this small town where Isabelle (Izzy) Crane just moved. She soon meets Croc, jock prankster extraordinaire, and Vicky, of the Van Tassels.
After numerous sighting of the headless horseman, the three find out that maybe he isn't the villain of the story and that someone else is after Vicky.
This isn't a super complex story but it's funny and adorable and full of amazing rep. Izzy is a lesbian and latina. Vicky is a midsize queer sapphic. Croc is Korean American AND there's a secondary character who is disabled and uses crutches as a mobility aid.
I loved the little humourous touches on both the artwork and storyline as well. This is a super fun fall queer graphic novel that I hope everyone will pick up!
I would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I have always enjoyed anything Sleepy Hollow related so I wanted to read this graphic novel. I enjoyed this new spin on an old tale, hoping for a second volume.
