A fun and cute Grafic novel with LGBTQ+ rep. The art is very special and I think you need to know a bit about the story behind sleepy Holli to get everything.
This is a fun, short graphic novel. It's very inclusive without being weird about it. There were a couple oddities with the plot line (and insta love.) Was it just me (or the e-ARC) or do the characters on the cover seem to have been drawn by someone else; that's not what they really look like throughout. I enjoyed the 3 friends and would have liked more interactions between Croc and Izzy. 3.5 stars rounded up.
I loved all the characters but Izzy was my favourite. The character development was strong and the LGBTQ+ and disability rep was really well done. It was a very fun read perfect for Halloween and spooky season and I hope there are more graphic novels with the group!
I was tempted by the feel of the cover and wanted to try it out. It was quite an adventure-filled plot. It felt quick but effective, and I can see teenage audiences appreciating it as well (I can only guess that since it has been several years since I've been one).
Izzy Crane is new to town. She is joining her school just in time to see the weird side of her new town shine. They revel in the concept of Halloween and everything that it entails. There are historical lores which tie the reigning local family. The Van Tassels act out scenes from the past. The current teenager in the family is Vicky, who is acting most unlike herself (or so her family feels). Izzy is instantly captivated by Vicky and tries her best to cross paths.
There is, however, an actual threat looming just on the periphery. It is by sheer chance that Vicky survives to the point of finding out about the threat to her life. The book consists of Izzy being a typical new student in town, then stumbling onto the headless horseman and, with the help of some trusty friends, set out to lay things to rest once and for all.
It was fun, and the art was quite enticing. It sets the mood without being overpoweringly dark or dreary. I would recommend this to anyone looking for graphic novels that are not all blood and gore!
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers. My review is entirely based on my own reading experience.
Izzy Crane just relocated to Sleepy Hollow and she is immediately thrown into all the usual troubles of being the new kid - trying to fit in at school, getting a massive crush on the most popular girl in town, and uncovering a giant conspiracy about a ghost who's trying to kill said crush. Just your normal teenage problems.
Hollow was a really, really fun Halloween read and a great twist on the classic Sleepy Hollow story!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and BOOM! Studios for the e-ARC!
This graphic novel is perfection. I love the legend of sleepy hollow and I love that this retailing takes the characters from the original story and gives them a completely new life with their future generations. The art in this graphic novel is gorgeous it’s very colorful, and it feels like autumn on a page. I also love the queer representation in this book and the breaking of stereotypes that takes place. This is a must read for autumn!!
3.5 stars - I had high hopes for this, because the premise is fun and I'm a huge Lumberjanes fan, but I did find it underdeveloped in the end. Still, it was cute and fun, and a neat interpretation of Sleepy Hollow.
Hollow follows Izzy Crane, who moves to Sleepy Hollow and befriends the descendants of the original characters. I am usually a little iffy on modern retellings but this is a creative sapphic sequel and was actually pretty wholesome. It was really funny at points too, Croc made me laugh out loud. I also liked the diversity representation in this story, and how characters are more than just one stereotypical feature, they have LAYERS (ie Croc isn't just a silly jock who plays pranks, he is a really supportive friend). I really loved the way Vicky Van Tassel struggles with her namesake and trying to have an identity outside of the original Headless Horseman story. I felt like parts of it moved too rapidly, after all the couple has a crush and gets in their first fight/breakup almost immediately, then get back together, but it really felt like that could have been a little more spaced out because it really did feel like a U-Haul instalove moment. The art in my galley was a bit pixelated and because of that some of the faces looked weird, but I am guessing the finished copy will have good art because the colors are atmospheric and facial expressions are really detailed. The art on the cover really does reflect the art style in the book, which is one of the things I get super irritated by, if the art on the cover is significantly better than the art in the comic.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.
What I was able to read, I enjoyed. My copy unfortunately expired before I could finish it. I liked the visuals and the story. The characters were cool. A good read for October.
Special thanks to BOOM! studios and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was honestly such a fun Halloween read and is the perfect addition to a school library! I love the characters, the art, and of course a good retelling! In addition, the characters were diverse without feeling like checkmarks, they were incredibly well done and relatable.
My biggest complaint is that this book did not read well as an e-book, it would constantly skip around and that made the reading experience quite frustrating.
I would highly recommend this book!
I really like the twist this story had on sleepy hallow, and extending that story. It was a nice addition to the classic tale, and it was a fun read. The art was really nice as well!
This was a really cute spin on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow! It's inclusive, queer, and just generally sweet. I'm a fan of the art and just the general cozy spooky vibes.
Izzy Crane is new to town - and the town is OBSESSED with the van Tassel family. Vicky is a van Tassel and is totally over being the pride and joy of the town. Initially Vicky doesn't want to be within 10 feet of a Crane, but she eventually folds, and Izzy tutors Vicky in math (math she is purposely failing as her way of acting out) and maybe they get to know each other even better than that... (I will say there's a sort of after-sex type scene that's sort of out of place in this story?? but w/e I guess)
They also have a friend, Croc, who is a major himbo, and together, the 3 find out the real secret of the Headless Horseman and the way it's haunting their town.
I don't wanna say too much because it definitely deviates from the original plot of the classic story. But it's an inclusive, fourth wall breaking spin on the old Ichabod Crane story that I think is totally worth the read this season.
This was a fun, horror filled romp. I love a good retelling of a classic story and I love when said retelling contains ant amount of queerness. The art wasn't my favorite, but that's really my only complaint.
When Izzy Crane and her family move to Sleepy Hollow, she’s overwhelmed by how much the town celebrates and cherishes the old Headless Horseman legend. Science oriented, Izzy doesn’t see the draw in obsessing with an old supernatural legend while walking home with two classmates… until she sees the Headless Horseman herself! What does the Headless Horseman want, and why is her crush’s life at stake?
I’m a fan of Shannon Watters, so when I saw they had a book that takes place in Sleepy Hollow, I knew I had to read it. We follow Izzy Crane right after she moves to Sleepy Hollow with her family. While we don’t see much of her parents, I thought they seemed warm and caring, so I really liked them. We also follow Vicky Van Tassel, whose family is obsessed with how far back their lineage goes in the town. The problem? Vicky hates everything that comes with being born with the Van Tassel name. We also meet some of Vicky’s family as well as her close friend, Croc Byun. Croc is the school prankster with a heart of gold. He actually turned out to be my favorite character, though I love all three members of this trio!
The story itself is amazing. I love how the paranormal world is slowly brought in and carefully balanced with what is real and what is skeptical. The friendships are heartwarming and I love how we saw character development even with supporting characters we didn’t see much of. One of my favorite things about this book is the humor that balances out the gravity of the supernatural situation that Izzy, Vicky, and Croc are dealing with.
One of the things I also love about this book is that it’s an easy and fun read for all ages. The artwork is beautiful and it has important lessons for younger audiences, such as the importance of communicating your thoughts and feelings with your friends and family. It pulls in an old legend most adults know of pretty well in addition to adding a touch of humor to keep things light enough that nothing gets scary. I think it’s a perfect read for pre-teens and older that will also be a great family read.
A modern twist on The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow. A female Crane moves to the small town and falls for the local girl. With their friend Croc they look for a bad teacher.
Thanks to NetGalley and Boom Studios and Boom Box for giving us the ARC.
Overall, I am not a fan of graphic novels, but a friend reviewed it, and it peaked my interest. This provides a great twist on a tale many are familiar with. 'Tis the season for spooky, so a retelling of Sleepy Hollow is perfect. This is an LGBT friendly book, which is nice to see. Izzy and Vicky are amazing together. The art is fantastic and the telling of the story excellent.
Very fun, very queer, very seasonal! I appreciate how they don't go for standard tropes, whenever two people decide to be friends instead of fighting over a girl who doesn't want them to fight over her anyway, so much the better. I think I'd pair this with Pumpkinheads and a PSL for ultimate fall.
First off, the art in this is absolutely perfect!!! It's so well drawn and coloured that it gives a bit of spooky vibes but still feels really light. I love the Sleepy Hollow stories and think this was a really great retelling. I gotta say the first 20ish pages I was kind of bored, but once the story actually got going it was fun. I love the trio friendship and how they went about solving the mystery. Also the ghost are ADORABLE!
The queer relationship was really sweet. I loved their little beginning friendship and the flirtation then onto the relationship was really great. Also the casual acceptance of the queer rep like it was normal (BECAUSE IT IS) was so nice to see. We need to see more normalized queer representation.
The only thing I know about the Sleepy Hollow legend is that there's a movie adaptation with Christina Ricci that I once tried to watch and promptly fell asleep. A headless horseman ghost story sounded kind of boring to me even as a kid. Idk. But this particular graphic novel retelling is actually fun and spooky without being overly scary. It gives Vampire Diaries Mystic Falls Founder's Day vibes. Also there's the enemies-to-lovers sapphic part that's pretty cool if you're into tropes. I would love to see more from this universe. 🐎🎃🌈

I don’t tend to read many graphic novels, but I was so excited when I read what this one was about. I was looking for more spooky books for the season, and this one sounded like a spooky with fun elements read.
I have yet to read Sleepy Hollow so I did go into this with so little knowledge, however, I did know the “basic” story so I felt like I was going to be okay. It didn’t really bother me that this was a Sleepy Hollow retelling, I still found some parts to be so fun to read about.
As a graphic novel, I tend to always focus on illustrations. Thankfully, I feel like this one had such great artwork and I really enjoyed looking at the colors. It gave off so many spooky vibes and it fits with the season.
I also loved the diverse characters and LGBTQ+ rep, those characters felt so real and I enjoyed reading about them.
My biggest issue with the book was the storyline. While I understood it was a retelling, I personally didn’t care too much for the actual story. I loved the illustrations, but the plot just fell flat for me.
Overall, this was a fun and quick graphic novel to read for the spooky season. It has some great rep and if you’re familiar with the Sleepy Hollow tale then I think t you’ll enjoy this one!
Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for my review copy, all thoughts are my own!
