Amazing queer follow up to the legend of sleepy hollow. Set in modern times, featuring descendants of the ordinal tale, and perhaps a familiar specter.
Izzy Crane has a lot to deal with when she moves from a big city to tiny sleepy hollow. Of course she is tutoring Vicky van tassel who is made to do all sorts of things for the town due to her name. With reports that the headless horseman is back and an actual sighting by Izzy, we are in for a wild supernatural ride.
The artwork is gorgeous! This is a super fun graphic novel that grips you immediately. There is legends, the supernatural, family issues, LGBTQIA representation and romance, and a very fun autumnal setting! It would be perfect for any reader, even if they haven’t read the legend of sleepy hollow before.
This graphic novel was a fun, fall treat. It goes into the legend of Sleepy Hollow and the headless horseman that we all know but puts it into modern times with the focus on the Van Tassel family and a female version of ichibad crane. This was a funny, light hearted read with fast pacing that is perfect for the Halloween season.
“Hollow” is a beautifully told Halloween tale, something I look forward to adding to my yearly spooky library. Part love story, part legend, the art is lovely and atmospheric, transporting the reader to a sleepy New England town rich with history, Halloween vibes, and a hauntingly familiar spirit.
One of my favorite aspects of this book was the characters. So much personality shines through in their designs, especially Vicky, with her ever-changing roster of outfits. It’s easy to get swept up in their world—and how much it makes me wish Halloween would come just a little bit faster. You can almost anticipate the coolness in the air and the crunch of leaves—and the predominance of pumpkin spice everything—as you read.
I liked how the original legend of Sleepy Hollow was incorporated into this modern setting, the way the characters are connected to it and each other. It feels somehow at once like a retelling of the original and it’s sequel.
I do wish we got to see some more of how the magic of the world worked. Sometimes it felt like getting a glimpse out of a speeding car’s window, but I want to linger on it longer. Especially when it came to the climax of the book; when a character with no previous or subsequent magical inclination suddenly has a burst of it, it would help to understand the source of that. Definitely not a big deal, as it was a moment that barely made me pause before continuing eagerly on with the story.
“Hollow” is a lovely addition to my Halloween reading list, and a book I look forward to revisiting for years to come.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this graphic novel. It was the perfect vibe for this time of year. The art style was lovely and engaging. I really enjoyed the fun twist on the headless horseman lore. I think this can be enjoyed whether or not you are familiar with the lore itself, but things make a little more sense if you are. I can't speak to the accuracy of the LGBTQ+ representation, but I liked how they handled things. It had a sweet little romance, which is perfect in the fall setting. This was a fun read and perfect leading up to spooky season.
A funny new arc of the Headless Knight with a lot of spooky moments! a perfect read for now next month of October to Halloween!! The pacing at times felt off to me and some things I wanted more of or felt like needed more explanation felt rushed. My only other critique is that the character development was a bit shallow to me. I also thought the art interesting but at the same time weird not my fav overall
A fun, original, modern-day re-imaging of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. This version is a little less terrifying (though there are definitely some spooky moments) and has a lot more humor.
I absolutely ADORE the horseman and his head, and I like that his role is much different in this version. Instead of just some terrifying ghoul, there is a purpose and depth to his character. There's some great diversity and representation among the modern characters, and the pacing of the story is pretty much spot-on.
A perfectly spooky graphic novel just in time for Halloween.

Isabel "Izzy" Crane moved to the city Sleepy Hollow at the worst/best possible time of the year: HALLOWEEN
While everything about the whole Headless Rider story is frustrating her pretty fast she can't stop to fall in love with the youngest offspring of the Van Tassel's: Vicky. She is the face to all the spooky stuff going around in her town to her biggest dismay because she only wants to be herself, not just an offspring and a name.
How lucky for that a real Headless Rider is riding through town at night!
Izzy, Vicki and a very charming jock named Croc Buyn (self-proclaimed King of the tricksters) are getting caught up in a creepy story from the past and nothing is like it seems.
I absolutly adore this story. It is queer, fun, the plot is great and has depth and the illustrations are amazing!!! The characters are well fleshed out and I fell a bit in love with them (not only the kids but with Gordo, the Headless Rider and his horse too).
A very great read for the spooky season which will come around soon!🎃👻 🐎
4.5/5⭐️
I received Hollow as an ARC through NetGalley.
I found Hollow to be a very unique story that I thoroughly enjoyed. The criticism is have is minimal. The pacing at times felt off to me. Some things I wanted more of or felt like needed more explanation felt rushed. My only other critique is that the character development was a bit shallow to me, but what we get was still enough for me to love Izzy, Vicky and Croc!
As for praise, I love the art and the story. The retelling/reimagining of Sleepy Hollow is perfect for this time of year and just made me that much more excited for spooky season! This will definitely be a graphic novel that I add to my shelf once it is released and I look forward to any future works with Izzy, Vicky and Croc!
The art style is really cute and really compliments this story. I loved the plot and the pacing of this story. The characters were great. It’s a lot of fun, and a really sweet story. There is some really nice relationship development, and really touching
Hollow is a continuation of Washington Irving’s spooky classic, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The story centers around the descendants of the Van Tassel and Crane families.
Victoria Van Tassel’s life is in danger as Halloween approaches. With the help of Croc Byun and Izzy Crane plus the Headless Horseman himself, will Vicky be able to outsmart the curse haunting her? The same curse that has been following her family for hundreds of years.
Shannon Watters’ story picks up several generations after the original tale ended. Her twist on past events made for a very fun read. I loved the reversal of roles for Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. Accompanied by beautiful artwork, this is a great read for spooky season!
Recommended for: spooky vibe readers, fans of the original, graphic novel lovers
I received a digital ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Hollow by Shannon Watters and Branden Boyer-White, illustrated by Berenice Nelle, was a creepy and fun graphic novel with a lot of heart. Perfect for fans of Over the Garden Wall or Coraline, this graphic novel is a great choice for when you're craving a good laugh with a side of the supernatural.
After skeptic Isabel Crane moves to the small town of Sleepy Hollow, which is plagued by the legend of the Headless Horsemen, she isn't necessarily looking forward to hearing about ghost stories constantly. That is until, of course, she meets the beautiful youngest member of the Von Tassels, whose ancestor was involved in the original Headless Horsemen story. Whilst Izzy tries to get closer to Vicky Von Tassel, she is confronted by signs that maybe the town's ghost story isn't as fake as she once believed. Alongside Vicky and their friend, Croc, the three must try to save the town from the legend itself - all whilst Izzy works on getting the girl.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable read, with a great cast of characters, charming art style, and a lot of hilarious scenes. Whilst I found Izzy to be a great protagonist, Croc was a highlight of the graphic novel thanks to his funny one-liners and drama.
Nelle's illustrations were beautiful with an amazing use of colour and imagery throughout. Where the words captured the story's heart and gripped me into the three character's worlds, the art style was the soul, effortlessly conveying the whimsical and mystical beauty of the story.
Whilst the plot was very engaging, I found the ending to be a little rushed. Despite this, the rest of the novel was highly enjoyable and I read it quite quickly just wanting to know what was going to happen. Whilst the ending was a little disappointing, it laid the groundwork for a potentially amazing new graphic novel series.
This graphic novel, whilst based on a legend, is a perfect read for anyone, regardless of their interest in the original story. I wasn't aware of many aspects of the Sleepy Hollow legend but I found myself very engaged in the graphic novel regardless.
If you enjoy graphic novels featuring themes of acceptance, self-growth, and friendship, as well as LGBT+ themes and some campy supernatural aspects, this would be a perfect choice for you.
Utterly spectacular! This graphic novel is gorgeously done - in the settings, the character design, the use of colour and the fantastic characters and their story. A perfect read for the spooky season, or indeed any time someone feels like a great graphic novel full of heart.
I really loved this graphic novel, it was perfect for spooky season and Halloween. The characters were really likeable and I absolutely adored the the romance between Izzy and Vick. The plot was interesting and kept my attention and the pacing was amazing. I loved the artwork too. It was a great read and I highly recommend it .
I don’t know anything about the legend of spooky hollow, but I loved this modern day graphic novel retelling. Atmospheric and unpredictable, it manages to be both scary and heartwarming. Gorgeous inclusive characters you can really get behind. Thank you NetGalley for the digital review copy 😍
I did enjoy this story and thought the layout of the graphic novel was good. The story is a retelling/reimagining of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow with teens in high school. The story is a fun spooky read but was a little predictable at times because it is such a well-known story. I did like how the author changed it up some and made it different, but I would have liked a little more depth to the story. The graphics were in a typical comic book style and easy to follow. I would recommend for younger readers. I appreciate getting to read the free ARC of this graphic novel.
This was such a sweet comic about three friends protecting each other, filled with spooky vibes, comedy and romance - as well as representation of all sorts!
Absolutely loved this modern day retelling of The Headless Horseman. Lots of historical background brought into it, along with a LOT of humor. Izzy Crane moves back to her mom’s home town and meets Vicky, a descendent of the Van Tassel’s and Croc, a goofy jock who offers up a lot of humor. A great twist on the story, including a sweet love connection between Izzy and Vicky. This is a perfect book to read as the Halloween season is upon us! Great addition to the library collection
Thank you so much to Shannon Watters, Branden Boyer-White, and NetGalley for the access to this ARC!
Hollow is a Halloween graphic novel (graphic short story?) about a cursed family in a small town.
What I liked the most was the LGBTQI+ representation, it was very nice to see it so normalized.
The story itself is cute, entertaining, and very appropriate for the spooky season!
I felt at times the story could have been a little better developed and felt like some bits were rushed out of nowhere (probably due to the size of the story?).
I also got an eARC that was blurry at parts, not high quality, and looked like it had a bad graphic arrangement but I don't believe this went through the printed book.
I had already liked Shannon Watters' 'Lumberjanes' series, and 'Hollow' has not disappointed me! A perfect Halloween read, with a touch of magic, a lot of friendship, not to forget lesbians (!!!) ! I can't wait to get my hands on it and better appreciate the drawings. Thanks to Netgalley for this very enjoyable reading experience!
Very cute young YA fantasy comic book. The illustrations are adorable, with vivid colours. The story is not very developed though, but full of good intentions. I was looking forward to seeing the cliches of the genre being inverted and played with, but they mainly conformed. The characters are a little surface level and there is no real surprise in this book. It's a little like watching an episode of a teen series. If you want a very light heartfelt story with LGBT representation this is for you. If you like something a little more mature, or meatier, then you might be happier with a different comic.
