Mairi Cameron has finally found Daniel Brixton, the childhood friend who mysteriously disappeared from her Scottish hometown years ago. He has changed from the boy she loved, to a stranger. Yet after she saves his life, he is not only ungrateful but appears not to know her. When she asks him to help her dear grandmother who stands accused of his murder, he is reluctant but agrees if only to keep her close. Posing as her husband for their travels, has Daniel questioning his true feelings for Mairi, when the passion between them begins to escalate.
Daniel has been a consistent character throughout the other Swooning Virgin Society books, and he finally gets his story told in this book number five. Each of the past characters have had a unique relationship with Daniel, who has almost been a father figure to them. I was so surprised to find him quite young, with such an interesting past. Mairi is such a strong, passionate character and it was interesting to see how their lives intertwined. This is a story filled with some sadness, yet the romance will bring light to this eventful story.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A lost boy, a mystery and a journey to prove love can prevail.
Daniel did not remember his past, but Mairi has come to find him and take him back to Scotland to show her grandmother did not murder him. Simple you say? Take a journey of discovery and finding love in this wonderful addition to this series!
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Romance: 💞💞💞💞
Sensuality: 💋💋💋💋
Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑🍑

Perspective: Third person perspective from hero and heroine
Should I read in order?
You CAN pick this one up as a stand alone. There’s some minimal character overlap in the very beginning with prior characters/heroines, but most of this book is Daniel and Mairi together in Scotland. However, Daniel has been a long running character in The Swooning Virgins Society, so you might get to know him better when you read in order.
Basic plot:
Mairi’s grandmother has been accused of murder. She very well knows she hasn’t committed the murder because the victim of the crime is living and breathing in London. She has no choice but to haul him back to Scotland to clear her grandmother’s name.
Give this a try if you want:
- Mid Georgian time period (1796)
- Mid steam – 4 full scenes (though 2 were pretty close together so I counted them as 1 flame)
- Road trip romance – starts in London and ends in Scotland
- One bed at the inn (leads more to conversation than sexual tension though)
- Working class romance
- Mystery to solve
- Childhood friends
- Huge hero/tiny heroine
- Scottish heroine and Scottish/English hero
Ages:
- Heroine is 29, hero is about 31/32 (2 years older than heroine)
My thoughts:
This one is probably my favorite of the series – Daniel was an amazing hero and Mairi was a delightful no-nonsense heroine. I really loved them both. I was probably the most interested in this mystery, as far as the mysteries in the series go. But overall I prefer my books with just a romance focus. And Bradley does this so SO well (Have you checked out her Wicked Way to Win an Earl or Lady Eleanor’s Seventh Suitor yet??) and I really just want her to go back to straight romance and couple focus because it’s my romance catnip that I just adore.
I loved the power balance between these two. Daniel is huge and is used to being able to force people to do what he wants. But tiny Mairi quickly puts him in his place when she outsmarts him, knocks him out and ties him up upon their meeting in London. Mairi is smart, she cares deeply about those in her life. Daniel tries to hold everyone at a distance but I love the way Mairi works her way into his life and heart and he holds her close and opens up to her.
These two spend most of the book together, which I adored. Loved the road trip feel and them working together on solving this mystery. I believe this was the steamiest Bradley I have read so YAAAAAY FOR THAT because seriously her sexy scenes are some of my absolute favorite. They are perfectly split between explicit details and that heart gripping emotion that just makes me fall in love with the characters and catches my breath. (And probably another reason this was my favorite of the series lol). I do believe this is the last in the series, so I’ll be very curious to see what she comes out with next!
The Virgin Who Capture a Viscount by Anna Bradley is book 5 in The Swooning Virgins Society Series. This is the story of Mairi and Daniel who where once young friends. But in their present day, Mairi is trying to save her grandmother and this leads her to look for Daniel. Daniel isn't the same person she remembers and seems to be on the dark side of the tracks but is he really that person. Loved this book and I do recommend Ms. Bradley's writing.
This book exceeded the title.
Spoiler alerts.
I liked this book so much. In fact, I was glued to my Kindle all night long to read it.
The story opens by having two young children's memories about an event that took place when he was 8 years old and she was 5 years old, one day before her 6th birthday. The boy was fishing with his friend, but it is considered poaching. They are being chased and one boy gets away and the his friend gets caught. Their female neighbor grabs the boy and takes him to his father and they leave town. The girl is the grand daughter of the woman neighbor and she goes into the woods in time to see her grandmother walking with the boy. She never sees her two friends again and her grand mother refuses to talk about it. 24 years later. Yes! The heroine is 29 and the hero is 32. Great ages for a romance. The hero is visiting his boss at a school that they have created. They teach woman self defense and this is where I realize it is a series. But this book is so good, you do not need the background. The hero is a big, sinister man who is scarred from his skirmishes with the lower class criminals. He has a few people hunting him now. He feels one of them trailing him and tries to catch him, but chases him into a house where he realizes he is a she and she cracks him.over the head with her pistol and he collapses. She is the heroine, the young girl from his youth. She needs him to return to their village because her grandmother is about to be hung for murdering him 24 years ago. She needs to prove that he is alive. The problem is that he doesn't do favors for people and he has no idea what she is taking about. He is Bristish, born and bred, and she is from a. Scottish village. He doesn't remember her, her grandmother, being friends or even being in that village.
This book was definitely a page turner. I will definitely put this book on my keeper shelf to re-read. The story grabbed me and drew me in from the start. It had a little intrigue and action parts. But it was the budding romance between the characters that really drove this story. It doesn't happen very often and I am very excited when it does. I am.tempted to read the previous stories to see if I can be pulled into the story again. I give this book 5 stars and recommend reading.
This book offered an intriguing blend of mystery and romance that I loved. Let's look at a very unique feel that quickly had me sucked in and avidly turning those pages. I love the chemistry between Mairi and Daniel. This is a light, sweet, fun and enticing read that has a little bit of grittiness to it. All in all, an excellent entry for this entertaining series.
Mairi travels to London to find Daniel, hoping to bring him back to Scotland in time to save her grandmother from being hanged for his murder.
An HEA for Daniel! This was so much fun to read. Mairi is strong, capable, and determined—the perfect match for the giant of a man traumatized by his past. He’s stubborn but good hearted, resisting Mairi but drawn to her at the same time. The mystery plot is full of intrigue and surprises.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Simply loved it! This was a well written book that made me content after reading.
Note: Though this is a part of a series, this can be read as a standalone.
First of all, let me say that I’m really sorry that this series is coming to an end, because it was really a gorgeous read and this can easily be the best book of all! Anna Bradley is an awesome writer, whose books always succeed at tugging at my heart strings somehow. Her characters are so vibrant and her descriptions so graphic that I found myself immersed in the story after a few pages and I couldn’t seem to put the book down!
Daniel’s story may be the most poignant I read lately; I loved his character from the previous books, so dark, mysterious and brooding, and I appreciated him even more when his true story was revealed in this book. And of course beautiful and spirited Mairi was his perfect counterpart! The mix of angst, mystery, humor and steam made this book a most enjoyable read and five stars is definitely not enough for it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I recieved a free copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I have loved this series and this may be my favorite on.
This follows Daniel who was featured in the previous books.
Mairi's grandmother is about to be hanged for murder unless Mairi can stop it. Daniel the man she is accused of murdering 24 years ago is alive and in London all Mairi needs to do is find him and bring him back to Scotland.
Daniel has no memory of Coldstream, Mairi or her grandmother.
As the 2 journey to Scotland I love how their relationship develops.
I like of fierce and independent Mairi is and how she brings out the best in Daniel.
This was an entertaining, well-written historical romance. It was fun, steamy, action packed and intriguing. It held my interest and I wanted to find out what would happen. This book can be read as a standalone story, though it is book 5 in the Swooning Virgins Society series. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by this author.
Daniel Brixton has watched and protected Lady Clifford and the ladies of Clifford school for a long time. Mairi Cameron has come to London from Scotland to find her old childhood friend who mysteriously disappeared more than twenty years ago. She follows, find and saves his life one night in the stews. The man she saves and claims to be her friend Daniel Adair is now known as Daniel Brixton. Mairi has come to convince him to return to Scotland to help prove her grandmother did not murder the boy Daniel Adair, because he is still alive. Daniel cannot remember her or her grandmother or Coldstream in Scotland. He doesn’t believe Mairi. The ladies of the Swooning Virgin Society and their husbands look into Mairi’s story and convince Daniel to go with her to Scotland to find out what the real story is. As they travel, an attraction grows between them. What will Daniel find when they reach Coldstream? This is a riveting story. Old secrets, betrayal, and brutal memories reveal a past Daniel could never have imagined and the possibility of a future he refuses to think about. Will Daniel accept his true identity and the feelings he has for Mairi? Can they solve the mystery and prove her grandmother innocent of murder? A dangerous mystery, a wonderful romance, a heroine as tough as her hero, and an awesome epilogue. Daniel’s story is a fantastic addition to the series.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.
Mairi Cameron is determined to find Daniel Adair, the boy she was smitten with in her youth who suddenly disappeared twenty-four years ago. Mairi's grandma is accused of murdering him and she knows her grandma would never have done that. Leaving Scotland to find him in London, Mairi begins a dangerous journey but holds her own. She finally finds Daniel but is having a hard time convincing him about the truth. He believes his name is Daniel Brixton and that he never lived in Scotland. The two of them make the journey back to Scotland together pretending to be a married couple. Let's just say some lines start to get blurred. As the mystery of who Daniel is starts to unravel, ghosts from the past come haunting back. In the end Daniel may find that who he thought he was was way off the mark and the life he always thought he wanted may now look a little different with the love of a good woman by his side.
I really enjoyed this historical romance. I just loved the way Mairi and Daniel sparred with each other....such great banter between them. The chemistry with these two was off the charts and you couldn't help but just hope these two gave in to their feelings. Overall this was another great addition to this fun series.
Another fantastic book in the series. I had thought the series had ended with the girls, but I am glad it didn’t and that we get Daniel’s story. Not only was the story good, but the writing is really done well.
This book could be a stand-alone, but is so much better when read with the previous books in the series in order.
Thank you Anna Bradley for the ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
She does indeed capture him,
Mairi has spent 24 years hating Daniel. Daniel left 24 years ago and doesn't remember her. He's been busy looking for trouble in al the dark places. Mairi, a little slip of a redhead, takes down the big, grumpy Daniel (who only does things the hard way).
She intends to haul his behind back with her to prove her grandmother did not murder him.
I liked how fiesty Mairi was and she was more than a match for Daniel.
4.5
Scottish puzzle! Scottish sizzle!
Braw Daniel Brixton is surprised! Who is this feisty young woman who took him captive—even though he managed to free himself? Mairi Cameron is shocked that Daniel refuses to acknowledge her and her grandmother Lillias. In fact he thinks she’s lying. What?
Mairi has come to London searching for him to return to Coldstream in order to set her grandmother free. She’s been accused of murdering—him!
Daniel remembers nothing of his life before he was eight. Now this young woman who makes his blood boil in more than one way is tying him in knots with her lies. Lady Clifford sends them both to Scotland to find the truth. Which turns out to be more than Daniel had bargained for!
Another lively story from Bradley and the Clifford Charity School for Wayward Girls.
A Kensington Books ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.
Oh, this was the best read ever. I really enjoyed this story by one of my favorite authors. Ms. Bradley writes from the heart. It had me at first chapter and never let go. I just adore reading this series, but it can be read as a stand alone. The characters were fully developed with thoughts and feelings of their own.
Mairi Cameron has come to London to track down Daniel Brixton, her childhood friend who disappeared many years ago. Her grandmother has been arrested and put in prison for the murder of said Daniel. She must convince the man to return to Scotland with her and present the evidence that is false. That no one killed Daniel because he's alive!
Daniel doesn't believe anything that Mairi says, because he can't understand what she's talking about. Even though Daniel's life has changed from the boy he was, Mairi must convinced him that a life is a stake. She has loved him a long time and maybe, just maybe he could love her too!
This had all the ingredients of love, trust, and the passion that makes this a swooning read.
Daniel and Mairi will have to go to many trials but the ending is a happy ever after.
I appreciate Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.
Awwwwwwe I loved this so much!! The mystery was so captivating and I do so enjoy seeing a big, gruff man brought to his knees quite frequently. Which one hurts more, pistol whipping or love?? Parts of the mystery were pretty obvious but I loved how it was unraveled and a bit unreliable.
Mairi was such a badass and the perfect counterpart to Daniel, since he’s been a big—if silent—part of the series. We got two sex scenes, two half scenes (each got an orgasm but not both), plus a good lass AND a good girl. I think this one had my favorite scenes of the bunch, just because we had to WORK for them. The payoff was so sweet.
The love story truly took the entire book and it was so emotional and soft, which contrasted the darker and honestly sad tones of the plot. I took some notches off the rating because this was truly sad and not one I’d read all the time, but I’ll definitely reread via audiobook! I do wish we’d have seen the school once more at the end! I hope the countess gets a book 👀
This series is perfect for cozy fall nights and chilly days. Bonus points if you get chased down cobblestone roads in a billowy dress and look dramatically over your shoulder while listening to the audiobook.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25/5 🌶🌶🌶/5
On a dark street in London, Mairi Cameron finally tracks down Daniel Brixton, the childhood friend who mysteriously disappeared from Coldstream her hometown nearly a quarter of a century ago ago when he was known as Daniel Adair. Now, however, he’s an arresting stranger whose life she promptly saves. But rather than being grateful, Daniel doesn’t believe Mairi is who she claims to be—or that her dear grandmother stands accused of his murder. Mairi is desperate to convince Daniel to return to Scotland with her, not only to prove he’s alive, but because of the strong feelings she still harbours for him. The Swooning Virgins Society quickly goes into action, and standing before them, Daniel is convinced to help. Posing as her husband for their travels only escalates the passions between them.
This series just goes from strength to strength, a brilliant mix of mystery & romance. I loved both Daniel & Mairi & was engrossed in their journey from disbelief, then a truce & finally falling in love. The book was well written the mystery had me on the edge of my seat at times & I loved that the villains got their just desserts. The cherry on the icing of the cake was a lovely eplogue
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I love Anna Bradley, and The Virgin Who Captured a Viscount hit all my favorite Anna Bradley marks! Angst, swoon, complexity of character - check, check, check. Not to mention a nice side of heat!
I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
