This was such a great story and I loved every minute I spent reading it. The story is set in 1871 Chicago and then carries on to FairPlay, Colorado. I felt at times that I was right there experiencing the same things as the characters. At one moment I could almost swear I heard a baby crying and had to stop and look around.
Catherine is a successful midwife who finds herself in a situation where she is falsely accused of murder. In order to keep a promise made to a mother as a dying wish, Catherine makes a hasty decision to take the baby and run.
Dylan is a sheriff in a small town in Colorado. Catherine shows up with his baby that he knows nothing about. Things then begin to get complicated.
The story grabbed me so completely that I found myself staying up late just so I could continue reading. Dylan used “darlin’” many times while talking to Catherine and she used “oh my stars” when in a surprising situation. Such heartwarming and sincere words to delight this woman’s reading pleasure. And then there’s the cover with such a swoon worthy cowboy pictured. Had my heart fluttering for sure. Five stars!
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit but was not required to write a review positive or otherwise.
The Last Chance Cowboy is a wonderful historical fiction novel with bits of suspense and romance thrown in as well. It is also book 5 in a series. You don’t have to read them all in order, but I always recommend you do!
I love this author and read her books every time they come out. They’re amazing and I know that I’ll always love them! This one has a midwife and I have to say it might be my favorite because I love midwives and hope to become one after all my babies are grown up. I’m a nurse now so that’s one step in the right direction.
In this book, we have a midwife who has been accused of murder. But she’s also on a mission. She’s been charged with taking an infant to his father. But she didn’t count on falling in love with the infant on the way. I mean, I saw that coming. I would definitely be falling in love and not wanting to let go of the baby. And to give a baby to a father who didn’t even know he was a father with no one to care for it? Umm, no.
Add in the father who has quite the past himself and who doesn’t know that he even has a child. He’s trying to overcome his past and his past comes to find him.
Wonderful novel! I hope you get a chance to read it and the rest of the series too.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I grew up watching westerns and love reading them. This is the last book in the Colorado Cowboys series and would make a great TV series. Dylan McQuaid has made a lot of bad decisions in his life but has finally turned his life around and returned to his hometown in Colorado and is now the acting sheriff. Catherine Remington is a midwife who is accused of murder after delivering Dylan's son, so she flees to Colorado to honor the mother's dying wish of giving Dylan his son that he didn't know about. In a marriage of convenience they learn what Godly love is. The story has all the western feels along with the messages of healing, hope, redemption, and forgiveness.
Catherine was at the right place but stumbled into a horrible moment. Decisions have to be made and she's on the run! Leaving Chicago to protect her father. Running to Colorado to an unknown man who is "kind" and "will provide for his unknown newborn". Taking chances could go well or horribly wrong.

A story about redemption
A story about making a new life
A story about love, family, & faith
I loved Dylan McQuaid's story! You can jump in & read book five but I would highly encourage you to read the entire Colorado Cowboys series. Each book just gets better and better! It's a series I would reread. ❤️
Reviewed from an ARC copy. Thank you, Jody!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and author for allowing me to read this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. I love a good, romantic western. The author had me hooked from the moment I began reading. I was always wanting to know what was going to happen next. The author brought to life the scenes, characters, and even the emotions from the characters. I would recommend this book.
The Last Chance Cowboy is the final book in the remarkable Colorado Cowboys series by Jody Hedlund. Once again, Ms. Hedlund has succeeded in crafting an amazing novel that is packed with memorable characters, rustic settings, and a captivating plot. This marriage-of-convenience story is well-written and thoroughly entertaining. Enriched by the perfect combination of history, adventure, and romance, it is a book that uplifts while it entertains.
Like the other books in this series, this novel is set within the busy ranches, small towns, and rugged mountains of the Colorado Territory. In this rural land, assumptions, misunderstandings, secrets, dangers, and fears, create plenty of obstacles for the characters to overcome. Though they endeavor to do that which is selfless and honorable, they are challenged by the consequences of their choices and their own insecurities. As they face significant dangers that threaten their futures and their goals, they must also confront issues of trust, truth, and forgiveness. As their story unfolds, the novel grows increasingly moving and thoughtful.
The Last Chance Cowboy is a memorable story worthy of a reader’s time and attention. Its important themes of forgiveness, trust, honesty, and second chances fill this book with meaning. It is a special novel that is wonderfully romantic, adventurous, and emotionally-impactful. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
*I was given a copy of this book by the publisher. A review was not required. The review I have written is voluntary and contains opinions that are entirely my own.
The Last Chance Cowboy by Jody Hedlund is the fifth book in the Colorado Cowboys series and a definite must read if you love inspirational historical romances.
Catherine Remington has no choice but to flee Chicago after being accused of a murder that she didn't commit. Fleeing to Fairplay, Colorado where Austin's father is living and working as the Sheriff turns out to be the perfect answer. As a midwife she can honor a patient's dying wish and hopefully get away from the mess she finds herself in.
Dylan McQuaid is finally settling back in town with his new job as Sheriff and doing his best at a better life when Catherine shows up with his infant son, that he knew nothing about. All of this has made his life complicated and choices have to be made.
When Catherine's past finally catches up with her it not only puts her life in danger, but also the people she has come to love.
I loved Catherine and Dylan's love story along with catching up with the rest of the McQuaid family in this last book of the series.
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
This was such a heart warming swoony and beautiful book!! I love that it showed flawed characters and God's redemption!!! And the love you can have for a child that's not biologically yours!
Catherine is running for her life after she sees a murder and is accused of being the murderer. She's also running with a baby that she delivered just before she witnessed the murder. The woman entrusted her to get the baby to his father. Dylan is temporary sheriff until election time. He used to be a drunk and womanizer but has since turned his life back over to God. This is a story of how God can turn us around. This is a feel good book and I recommend this to everyone.

4.5 stars This is book five in the Colorado Cowboy series, even though it is a stand alone book, i feel you miss a lot of history and some great reads by starting with this one, but you will not be lost if you jump right into this one. I love the writing style of Jody Hedlund, and look forward to her books. They are packed with family, love, some mystery and so much more. I enjoyed getting re-acquainted with the McQuaid family. Even though some may feel like there is a little to descriptive of childbirth, this is a great read. Dylan and Catherine must overcome a lot not to mention some preconceived ideas and misunderstanding. I fell in love with the McQuaid family in the first book I read in this series so I was excited to continue the journey. I was given a copy of this book for my honest opinion.
This is the 5th book in the Colorado Cowboys series. While this book could be read as a stand alone, much of the story comes together better if they are read together. Dylan McQuaid is set to change his life and put his past behind him. All he wants is to live a life that honors God and be the sheriff Fair Play,Colorado deserves. Catherine Remington is a midwife who serves those others deem unworthy, she wants to serve as God would have her to do. This book of second (last) chances and learning to lean into who God created you to be is filled with heartache, action and the joy of falling in love forever.
** I received an e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this opportunity.
A delightful marriage of convenience plot and endearing characters set the tone in this late 1800s wild west tale that fans of western romance will devour.
This is the fifth and final novel in the Colorado Cowboy series so there is some backstory with the McQuaid family that is skillfully explained and interwoven within the story. Hero Dylan returns to his hometown after a stretch in Chicago and becomes the local sheriff, trying to be a better man and earn the trust of the townsfolk and his family again. Heroine Catherine Remington is a midwife who delivered Dylan's son in Chicago. After the mother dies, she is compelled to present him to his father and travels to Colorado. He thinks Catherine is the woman that he had a drunken affair with. Because of murder charges hanging over her in Chicago, she needs a place to hide out and does not deny it. A quick marriage makes them life partners with a child to raise and a relationship to build.
Hedlund is a talented writer who captures the western lifestyle perfectly. The plot and characterizations were at times a bit over the top for me, but overall it was a charming tale that many of her fans will enjoy.

A bittersweet ending to one of my all time favorite series. I’m so sad it’s over, but so grateful it happened!! And what a great cherry on top to our other cowboys. Dylan, he was our redemption story. He is the perfect example of the prodigal son who comes home after being gone. But this is the story of his time after he came home, the part where he needs to show everyone he has changed. And what better way than to fix the mistakes that follow you back home?
If you’ve loved the other 4 books in this series, I have zero doubt you will love this one too.
Wonderful story. When we and our lives are broken into pieces, God can put them all back together for us, even better than before. We've all made some wrong choices and done things we wish we hadn't. Dylan had done so but found his way and was now proving himself a changed man. Then Catherine came into his life. He did what he thought was right, prayerfully following God's path. Catherine was swept up in so many things, running from her family and some criminals in her home city. It all makes for a fabulous package, a book that's hard to put down, wanting to know how it will turn out. Excellent read.
I received this book free from the author, publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I love a good marriage of convenience story, so I was quite excited when I realized that The Last Chance Cowboy featured this trope. Hedlund crafts a believable reason for the marriage of two strangers, mostly because of a case of mistaken identity. While the misunderstanding at times left me a little frustrated when it wasn’t solved, it drove the plot along as Catherine and Dylan get to know each other.
Dylan’s quest to prove he’s a better man not only made a great character arc but also led to a sweet romance as he does his best to treat Catherine with respect. I loved the sweet, and often flirty, exchanges between them.
The book also has a nice spiritual arc about redemption and second chances, not only because of Dylan’s past but also the repercussions of the misunderstanding. Hedlund avoids being preachy but gives the reader plenty of food for thought.
Overall, The Last Chance Cowboy is a sweet historical western romance perfect for fans of marriage of convenience.
(Note: I received a complimentary copy via NetGalley for review. All opinions expressed are my own.)
I loved the second chance themes and stories about marriages of convenience. Hedlund is a master at these. She brings her characters to life and describes the situations so well, you can believe you were there. We visit the entire McQuaid clan again as she tells Dylan's story. He has settled down and departed from his wild ways and become the sheriff of the small town. He wasn't looking for a wife and certainly not hearing that he was now a father. I love how the McQuaid clan all stick together and especially when one of them is in need. This last book in the series ends with a very satisfying ending..... I received a complementary copy of this book from the author and publisher and was not asked for a positive review. My opinions are my own.
This may be my favorite out of the entire series! It was so good! I couldn’t put it down! I read it in just a few hours because I couldn’t stop. I really enjoyed Dylan and Catherine. They were well done characters. Not perfect but not completely controlled by their faults.
The story flowed so well and never had any dull moments for me. I felt this book wrapped up the series perfectly!
The Cowboy series continues with the story of Dylan. He has turned his life around but before he did so he left behind somethings that need to be cleared up. One of them is a child.
Catherine comes out west to escape unwarranted charges and to reunite a father with his son. When she gets there she has become very attached to the baby and does not want to leave him. She tries to make things right and clear up some misunderstandings, but things get out of hand pretty quick.
Along with a new family, Dylan is also trying to keep the peace in his town while still fighting the demons he left behind. He is doing his best to show that he belongs as sheriff even though several things keep coming up that is putting his job in jeopardy.
I liked seeing some of the characters from the other books in the series to see how their lives are going and am sad to see the series end.
The Last Chance Cowboy by Jody Hedlund was the last book in the series. I totally enjoyed the book and I had not read any of the other books in the series. I am a new fan of Jody's.
This was a prodigal son kind of story. Dylan had been the wild child of the family. He has now grown up and seen the errors in his old ways. He wants to prove to himself, his brothers and the towns people that he has changed.
When Catherine shows up with his son, he knows that will not help with his reputation and proving he has changed. Catherine is a mid wife and helped birth his son before the mom passed away.
I enjoyed the story and all of the towns people. The story showed Dylan's struggles with wanting to do the right thing and that it would be a constant battle.
The story was well written and made me want to go back and read about each of the brothers.
The Last Chance Cowboy is a western romance written by Jody Hedlund. It is book five in the Colorado Cowboys series, but it is not necessary to have read the previous books in order to read this one.
Summary: Catherine Remington has just delivered a baby boy. And then been witness to a murder.
She has promised the dying mother she would take the baby to his father out west, and now that one of Chicago’s biggest crime bosses is gunning for her, she decides she has no choice but to make a run for Colorado.
Dylan McQuaid is finally living an upstanding life as sheriff of his small town. There are still those who think he isn’t up to the task, but he is determined to prove them wrong.
But when Catherine arrives with the baby, Dylan must make some quick decisions, or risk losing the respect he’s worked so hard to gain from the townsfolk.
Can he adjust to his new life as a dad? And where will Catherine go now that she’s delivered the baby and can’t return home to the danger she left behind?
My Thoughts: This book is a fun read. I liked the unique premise, and the author did a great job of setting up a nice romance in the story as well. I enjoyed it!
