This is a psychological thriller, it was twisty, it was clever, one of the characters is not what she seemed to be but is that too little, too late? For me I felt bombarded by the final final twists which made it a touch too long, but regardless an enjoyable read.
My Perfect Friend by Sarah Clarke
What an excellent domestic thriller. I never saw that ending coming. Read it.
Well what can I say?.... Although it's a slow burn psychological thriller it is a definite must read well worth it! Beth has it all a beautiful house, a living husband and two adorable children as well as a dog. On her way home one night she stops to do a good deed trying to help a drug addict, this then sets of a chain of events that sees the past catching up with her. Beths friend Saskia posts a video online of her being a heroine and Kat thinks she recognises Beth from years ago although she had a different name then. Kat begins to try and become Beths friend again without her knowing who Kat really is. Who are the real friends and who can be trusted? This truly is a guessing game full of twists and turns. The ending is truly a shocker!!
Very well written and will recommend to everyone I know.. Many thanks to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this and to Sarah Clarke for such a imaginative thriller, can't wait for more of your novels.
Beth has a perfect life, carefully constructed over the last eighteen years. Then one night she makes a choice that puts everything at risk. Kat sees an article about that night and long buried memories surface. She and Beth were friends at one time until their friendship ended badly. Seeing her change to make things right, she introduces herself to Beth, but as a stranger rather than an old friend. Beth doesn't know Kat isn't who she says she is, but then neither is Beth.
The characters were all well-written, and the plot contains plenty of obsession, delusion, revenge, and twists. Overall it was a great quick read and I enjoyed it. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.
This book was well written, and had lots of twists and turns. Told from different POV's, and switches between past and present. Everything is nicely pulled together. Sarah Clarke is a new author for me, and I enjoyed this very much!
Thank you Netgalley and HQ Digital for the ARC!
I hadn't heard of this author before, and wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I was not disappointed! I read the blurb and went it not it thinking I would already guess the twist, but I couldn't have been further from guessing it. I loved this book and I will definitely be looking for more by Sarah Clarke.
They say, don’t judge a book by its cover. I say, don’t judge a book after only reading a couple of pages. Truth be told, I was having a hard time pushing through because I generalized that this was gonna be another blah blah blah story. I was ready to shelve it as dnf and I’m someone who rarely does that! But then I saw the rating on Goodreads and read the reviews. How could this have a lot of meaningful reviews? Maybe I’m being hasty. I was intrigued. I decided to give it another try and this time around I was NOT disappointed. BRILLIANT! Utterly, brilliant. I now realize why I was annoyed at first. I was having a hard time getting into the matter of things and I wholly thought it was becase of the writing, pacing, too many characters or I’m just dumb, but NO. It’s all brilliant!
This is a gripping thriller that keeps the punches coming. Well written page turner. You’ll think you know what’s happening next but I assure you that you should think again. So many twists and turns on every page.
I did not want this book to end but I couldn’t stop reading it. I can’t wait to read more from this author. A well thought out plot and even better in the delivery.
Beth lives in a smart house in West London, a rich banker husband and two perfect children, the envy of all who follow her on social media. When she stops to help a dying drug addict on the way home from a night out her friend Saskia puts it up on the neighbourhood site and it's noticed by Kat, who thinks she remembers Beth from long ago - and she wasn't called Beth. It's a tense and twisting story and it will keep you guessing, who is who, what have they done? and what are they going to do? First rate thriller
Quite the page turner. A little spooky for me, I don’t usually like reading these sort of novels as it doesn’t make for bedtime reading! A murder mystery with the murderer not revealed until the last chapter. All the characters were very well described and the mental instability of those with paranoias comes through loud and clear. A great read if you like psychological stories.
Beth and Kat have a connection from the past but Beth doesn't remember. Kat pushes her way into Beth's life, determined to be her friend again. But why does Beth really not remember?
Not sure why there are average reviews for this on Goodreads because I found it totally wild! I wasn't expecting it to go the way it did and was impressed with the author's writing. A clever thriller that shows you don't really know the people you think you do.
This tale employs misdirection from the beginning and continues to do so throughout the book with twists and turns galore.
Beth becomes a heroine for trying to help a homeless drug addict when she finds him collapsed in a shop doorway. Her over-zealous friend posts pictures and the story on facebook, much to Beth's chagrin. The story spends time with Beth beginning to wish she had not stopped to help. Her 'fame' brings her to the attention of Kat, who believes she knew her many years ago.
The plot thickens and the story becomes more complicated.
Many thanks to Netgalley/Sarah Clarke/HQ for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is the second book by Sarah Clarke I read (previously I'd read A Mother Never Lies). Admittedly this is a slow burn but things begin to pick up and the second part is very intriguing.
The story is told from different POVs and switching between the past and present, where eventually all stories collide and make sense. Enjoyable read!
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. I absolutely loved it! A true psychological thriller, full of twists and turns throughout. It kept me guessing until the very end and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to find out what would happen. The author is new to me but I will definitely be looking out for her other books. Thoroughly enjoyed it and a massive 5 stars from me.
I have just finished this book and all I can say is wow! Although it appears slow in parts, the story is just gathering momentum. It takes us on a journey of drug addition, mental health issues, low self esteem and friendship, all happening to different people. Beth is the beautiful friend with a seemingly perfect family and her wonderful best friend Saskia who lives across the road. Kat then enters the picture and she is a quiet, unassuming person who works as a dog groomer and befriends Beth by offering to walk her dog. We then start to see the cracks in Beth’s life and how it may affect her perfect family and life and how Kat’s character grows.
Without giving any spoilers I cannot say too much more apart from the ending blew me away and that doesn’t happen very often.
I enjoyed reading this book & didn't guess the twist at the end either! Definitely worth a read! Thank you to Netgalley & Sarah Clarke for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review!
Long and drawn out , the three main characters are women in London, two mothers of young children, the third a dog groomer who knew one of the women in a previous life. There are twists and turns in the book but I got too bogged down by the slow moving plot that I didn't really care about them. I was not keen on any of the characters either .
My thanks to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for anhonest review . Sorry that I could not recommend this book more

This book is a perfect example of a low burn. The first few chapters are slow, but the ending makes it so unbelievably worth it. 5 stars
I am sitting here, flummoxed with eyes wide open in stunned silence. This. Was. Incredible. It’s been such a long time since I’ve been blown away by a psychological thriller, getting it so wrong the entire time. I actually had to reread some previous chapters for it all to make sense. That’s when you know you have really loved a book, when you still think about it after ending it, wanting to reread it.
Beth has the perfect life. She has constructed it carefully over the last eighteen years. But one night she makes a choice that risks everything.
When Kat sees an article about that night online, buried memories begin to surface. She and Beth were friends once. Things ended badly then, but now she has a chance to make them right.
Kat introduces herself to Beth. Not as her old friend, but as a stranger. Beth has no idea Kat isn’t who she says she is.
But then neither is Beth.
The author did a stellar job with disguising and misleading. I really thought I saw it coming, but no. In addition to the brilliant twists and revelations, the book was well-written, emotional and clever. The characters had depth and felt real to me. There might have been some stereotypical behavior, but their personalities changed in a meaningful way in the end and I liked that.
I think all lovers of psychological thrillers will find this a compelling read. If there are some faults or if the characters feel too shallow, hang in there. It will be worth it.
Finally a book where jaw-dropping twist really arrives as promised.
Many thanks to netgally and Harper collins publisher for this very appreciated ARC.
My Perfect Friend tells the story of Beth, who goes to the aid of a dying drug addict but has no idea that this brave act will change everything. We also meet Kat, who is trying her best to weave her way into Beth's life and Saskia, the nosy neighbour.
I enjoyed this book. Although none of the characters were overly likeable, they were very well written and convincing. There was constantly a dark and slightly creepy atmosphere and the reader is kept guessing throughout.
There were lots of twists and turns, making this book an exciting read.
My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending this ARC in return for an honest review.
