I was drawn to this book by the blurb and I absolutely am happy I gave this book a chance. It looked very instering. Kept me pulled into it. Already told a few people that they need to read this book. 5 star book and probably gonna reread it later on in the year.
A decent read, actually The plot may be somewhat predictable but the characters are charming. The villain's plot didn't make a lot of sense and the foreshadowing is pretty heavy handed. Still it's action oriented and makes a nice bit of basic entertainment.
This story was not what I thought it would be but it was a fun read. It gave me supernatural vibes but not full blown. The breakup was more built up than it really was, but I love the characters and I love the relationship and connection between the friends.
This is a quick, but fun read that you are sure to enjoy. It's not perfect but that's easy to bypass because it is enjoyable.
Would-reread again.
Breakup from Hell is a lot of fun, but I couldn’t help but feel like something was lacking. Mica is sick of her small town life with her overbearing small town grandmother so when a new, mysterious guy shows up, she’s immediately interested. Of course, she notices some red flags pretty early on. She and her friends start having creepy visions and begin having super-human abilities. As she learns more about her crush, Sam, she realizes she is living in her own horror novel.
This premise was really great. It was kind of campy and weird, and I love outlandish parts of it felt. I do think the romance at the center fell to the wayside as the rest of world developed, and I definitely wanted to know more about Mica’s super fun and quirky friend group. The supporting cast here was great and so badass and I wanted them around more. I also wanted to see more chemistry between Mica and Sam, and I wanted her to realize the issues with him sooner. It was sometimes hard to root for her when she was missing the signs. Still, she ended up being pretty badass, and I had a good time with her journey. It gave teenage Grady Hendrix and I’d read more horror by this author. I think this would be a great addition to any YA library.
Full of satire and humor, I really appreciated unique and original storyline! Miguela is someone I would happily read more about in a sequel.
*I received a free copy of this ebook from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.*
This book didn't end up being quite what I expected. It wasn't bad, but I didn't love it. Occasionally it had Buffy vibes--or at least attempted-Buffy vibes--which should have worked because I love Buffy. But it didn't quite reach its goal for me.
The writing was fine, nothing to complain about. Mica (17 or 18) and her friends had a good relationship. They were all fleshed out enough to be supporting characters; however, even when one of them was "upgraded" to a main character, he still felt like a supporting character. (Does that make sense?). Sam (19) intrigued me, but I was ultimately disappointed with his character. Rona was a bit too one dimensional to be interesting.
All in all, it wasn't a terrible book or anything. It just underwhelmed me.
Note: Some swearing.
Miguela is tired of her same basic life. When she meets Sam, she jumps to the opportunity to be spontaneous and falls under his charm.
This started out as a fun, cutesy little romance comedy. However, it was so hard to get into it. Maybe it would be perfect for early teens but I do not think it was for me.

Loved the concept for this book, I just felt like it didn't hit. The chapters feel too long and were kind of boring. I can't think of single teen that would read this, the writing style is boring.

#netgalleyarc This took me back to my Buffy The Vampire Slayer days. This was a fun, quick, YA read that I will def be purchasing for my Hs library. The characters were funny and charismatic. There are so many Ya romance/fantasy books out there but this one just hit different. It didn’t try too hard and was just enjoyable.
This had some religious aspects i hadn’t really expected. I enjoyed the book and feels like it’s kinda like the fallen series and also that maybe micas journey isn’t over
Young adult novel about a girl Mica, who starts dating this guy Sam and then notices strange things happening. Little by little things get weirder and she starts to notice she has powers. She wonders where this came from and has noticed it started when Sam came to town. But how can that be?
I loved this book. It was a fun, wild ride. I enjoyed the religious backstories. Big fan of mythology. I would absolutely recommend this book. (And I absolutely have in online book groups)
Breakup from Hell is a story genre that I typically don’t read often… and I kind of enjoyed it!! It has an interesting concept and some satirical religious references are into the story. I’m not very religious so it didn’t bother me, but I cannot say the same for others. Mica and Sam are curious characters, the story is mostly fast paced and medium paced at some places which made me think the book could have been 50 or so pages less. Solid effort overall!!
Thank you Harper Teen for the gifted book!
I totally didn't read the description for this one when I requested it...it was part title part cover. So I had nothing to go on going in.
Mica, Z, Barry & Rage are BFF"S forever in a small Vermont town. Mica lives with her abuela and mostly behaves but her greatest desire is to go away to UCLA after graduation. When I new guy comes to town she is immediately drawn to his sleek foreign gorgeousness. Little does she know he isn't what or who he looks like. He's actually Satan's son. Then she finds out she is more than she thought she was...a descendant of the angel Michael. All of her friends are also descendants of angels.
There was some disconnect for me in the middle of the book but it recovered and I enjoyed it overall. It's fairly fast-paced and there's humor woven in between the bible references. I can honestly say I've never read anything like this book.
3.50 ⭐️ Ok this book was absurd but I really enjoyed it. It was kind of like if twilight and the DaVinci code had a baby that didn’t resemble either of its parents. I enjoyed the characters and how dynamic and three-dimensional they felt, but I did think that Mica’s powers coming in full force was totally abrupt. I would have liked to have seen more of Sam and gotten into his head because it seemed like he was sometimes implying that he didn’t want to do what he was doing, which made me want to root for him but I didn’t know him well enough. Overall, this book was very fast paced and surprising, it didn’t go the direction I thought it was going to at all. I would recommend this if you’re looking for something easy, quick, and that doesn’t take a lot of brain power.
I started reading this only to realize that I didn’t vibe with the writing style, and do not want to give a negative review simply because I knew starting the book that I probably wouldn’t like it. I had to DNF this. I’m sorry.
This was a really fun ride! I liked all the characters and felt the way the story unfolded was well paced.
This synopsis sounds so interesting, but the more I dwell on this book after reading it, the more problematic it feels to me... sadly, because I really wanted to love it.
Mica lives in small town Vermont with her grandmother. She feels like she is suck here and that her grandmother is super protective of her. When a new guy comes to town and shows interest in her, she is immediately drawn to him, but weird things are happening and she thinks he is connected.
I am not religious but this book and the knowledge that I do have were enough to understand this book and the plot which get pretty religious once the plot gets going. That being said, while religious, it also has a pagan character too ... which was an interesting addition.
Anywho - Mica is a determined teen and looking for more and Sam might be able to give her that so she falls fast but soon regrets it. Her insta-love is quickly turned to hatred as she learns that Sam is using her and then all Hell breaks loose literally. The overall pace of the love story, discovery, and then the action were pretty quick. This is a stand-alone and it was paced accordingly, but some things felt rushed. The ending to me seemed to wrap up very quickly. The cast of characters were interesting, Mica and her friends and Sam and his 'friends/family'. They all had parts to play and I think the author did a good job distinguishing all of them, but those descriptors were all over the place, we have the pagan, anti gun friend, the pro-gun, redneck, gay friend, one is vegan, one is Latino... there were a lot of diverse groups involved. So I guess this could appeal to most audiences.
That all being said, there were a few things that I found to be a bit off. It might be because I have spent the better of 10 years in Vermont (I only recently moved to the NH side), but it might also be that it is actually weird. So Vermont is one of the least religious states in the U.S., so the fact that there is a prominent church-going community is a bit shocking to me, not saying that they don't exist, just that it is rare in VT. Additionally, I loved that Mica is Puerto Rican, the diversity of main characters is great, however again, in Vermont it is rare... only about 2% of all the population of Vermont is Hispanic/Latino and they are mostly in the bigger cities.. not Stowe, VT. I just felt like the author was forcing this plot into this setting in a way that didn't work for me.
Then later in the book there is a quote about one of the characters being gay, he is "queer redneck" with a black boyfriend and they've "blown about a dozen New England stereotypes" ... this didn't feel right to me. New England, especially Vermont, are very open to the queer comminuty and I am not sure that a "queer redneck" would blow up the stereotypes here... I appreciate the representation, let me make that clear, but how the characters were written about made me feel icky. It felt like filler just to be inclusive.
So, overall, not the best book for me. Too much insta-love, a sketchy guy, diverse characters, but their diversity seems like filler, a too-fast wrap up and I just wanted more. Positive - it was a stand alone and I need more of those.
The book is fast-paced and is accompanied by insta-love, insta-breakup, and insta-hell breaking loose. I needed it to slow down and stop being so plot-driven, to build a stronger foundation to this new found relationship, and to allow me to connect with the characters before the world was going to come to an end. Unfortunately, none of this happened. As an avid fan of YA novels, I was disappointed with the book. The swift storytelling and the dialogue was more fitting of a middle grade novel, which I also like to read. With some content changes, I think it would be more successfully geared toward this age group. It might work even better as a graphic novel. (2.5 stars rounded to 3 stars)
