First page of this book and I was kicking myself for not reading it sooner. It was like the author Mary Claire Haver reached into my brain and knew what I needed to hear, the help I've been seeking, and the answers to so many questions I'm having. I was scribbling notes and thinking of all my friends who need to read this book. Did you know 7 out of 10 deaths is caused by Inflammation? As someone who suffers from very high inflammation I was shocked and really concerned for my own wellbeing.
Mary Is an OBGYN and specializes in perimenopause and menopause education. I wish I lived in Texas because I would be at her office begging for help. What I found in my own struggle is that so many doctors don't have the time to help or even make you feel like your health is their concern. I spent nine months being told my blood test was normal, only to discover it was normal, for someone going through menopause. I suffered lack of sleep, hot flashes every 15 minutes, gained a ton of weight, and put my body under so much stress that I'm now in adrenal failure. The worst parts is all of this could've been prevented with the proper care.
I loved this book from the first page to the last. The care and concern Mary has for women exudes off every page. I somehow felt seen and realized that unfortunately I'm not alone, but in a big sisterhood of women navigating the next chapter in our lives.
The book goes over the reasons The Galveston Diet works. It really isn't a diet it's more of a lifestyle change. So many amazing ways to help rid your body of inflammation. Mary lists foods that hurt and those that help, vitamins/minerals, fiber, good carbs vs bad carbs, starchy vegetables vs non-starchy, good fats, and the best food lists you could ask for.
I finished this book feeling like I have a great plan in place to move into 2023. I want to change everything and watch this inflammation disappear. I will encourage every women I know to read this book and if I ever have the chance to meet Mary she'd getting a big hug from me. Cheers to ridding myself of the bad and watching my body change!
Great information on women’s hormones, intermittent fasting, and nutrition. The book also provides meal plans with shopping lists, and approachable recipes.
Thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for early access to this book in exchange for an honest review.
A good book with a lot of good information on healthy lifestyle changes to balance women's hormones, especially during perimenopause and menopause. It includes a meal plan, grocery list, and recipes to make it easy, which I really liked. Very informative.
Excellent! So much helpful information here for this distressing time of perimenopause and menopause. This is a nutrition and lifestyle program to help during midlife.
What I love about this book. - it’s geared towards middle aged women going through menopause / peri or post . When I read through the first few pages , I was like she’s taking about me !
The book is easy to read - lots of recipes and meal ideas for both the 1 month kick start and the “ life long “ eating habits .
I will try this “Diet” which really is more if a change in eating habits - first stop - intermittent fasting ! I can manage that during the holidays !
As a woman entering perimenopause, I've discovered that my body doesn't respond to diet and exercise the same way it did even 2-3 years ago, leaving me frustrated and with other new body experiences as well (such as hot flashes). I've followed this author on TikTok and gotten some great suggestions and feel like there is some hope to reclaim my body in this time of my life. I found the first sections of the book, with the explanations, to be extremely helpful. I've been hesitant to try fasting, for example, but after reading the evidence Dr. Haver provides, I am willing to give it a try. I've preordered the physical copy of this book (I prefer to refer to plans and recipes that way) and cannot wait to get started on this life journey as soon as I have the physical book in my hands.
The Galveston diet is designed for women in perimenopause and menopause. Many other diets do not take factors related to aging women such as menopause into consideration. This is not true with the Galveston diet. Dr. Mary Claire Haver is a practicing OB/GYN and she discovered that the typical advice given to women regarding dieting, was not working. The typical advice that was eat less and exercise more, was not working because it didn’t address the hormonal imbalance affecting aging women today. The Galveston Diet focuses on intermittent fasting, eating a specific ratio of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, and limiting processed food and additives in an attempt to reduce inflammation. This book provides 6 weeks of meal plans with easy to follow recipes, tips, and tricks. I highly recommend this book to any middle aged women looking to lose weight. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.
I had never hear about the Galveston Diet, so I was interested in the focus on women's hormonal changes with age. I like how symptoms were broken down with the explanation of the diet, but I thought the accepted food lists were too short for sustained variety, especially for some interested in being able to integrate international cooking into a healthy diet. I'm not convinced that extremely low carbs and intermittent fasting is they way to go over a more balanced approach.
A helpful working guide to managing health and nutrition at a complex time of life for most women. A clearly laid out plan for both understanding and managing how hormones change and impact the body as we age.
This is such an interesting book, promoting the Galveston Diet and intermittent fasting. I found it easy to read and It felt like the author, Dr. Haver, genuinely cares about her readers. Lots of good info about nutrition and women's changing bodies as they hit menopause.
Thank you for my copy!
Full disclosure: I do not know Mary Claire Haver, but I did go to school with her husband. This is an honest take on her book.
I was so glad when I received this advanced copy. I've followed Dr. Haver on TikTok for a while and was interested in the Galveston Diet. The book is full of good, scientific information and the three facets of the plan are easy to understand. I'd recommend this book for any woman approaching menopause.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the advance readers copy of this publication.
I have much respect for Dr Haver and have enjoyed many of her books/blogs and webinars.
I would highly recommend her take on eating to become healthy. Not so much a book about diets as it should be about healthy lifestyles.
THE GALVESTON DIET by Mary Claire Haver was a huge -- and wonderful surprise. Informative, motivating, and authoritative, Haver guides women of a certain age through ways to live fit, healthy, and active lives with several powerful modifications to their daily habits: intermittent fasting, non-inflammatory food choices,, and balancing proportions of fat, protein, and carbohydrates. Once I started reading, I didn't want to stop learning the answers to longstanding issues and concerns and a way to live vibrant, happy, and well. I received a copy of this book and these opinions are my own, unbiased thoughts.
I have been following Mary Claire Haver on social media for a couple years now. I always love what she has to say about menopause and health. I love intermittent fasting and the benefits from that. This is a great book to learn more about her Galveston Diet if you've seen snippets of her on Facebook or Instagram. I always prefer having a physical book for this type of reading and making notes in.
Thank You Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review. All opinions are my own.

As someone who holds a self-appointed "honorary PhD" (meaning I have voraciously devoured these topics for my 55 years) in everything diet, food, health- fitness-and exercise science- related, I think this book is SPOT ON, and very approachable. I do hold a certification in Personal Training, and as such I would refer to this book for my scientific resource, in guiding a client in the throws of the life change. I already knew and appreciated Dr. Haver, being ardently interested in her delivery on the topic of menopause and aging: her personal experience coupled with her M.D. and a very easy-going, magnetic personality, So I was thrilled when I was offered the opportunity to review this book. Want to hear a voice that could be your brilliant personal doctor/ friend/ trusted advisor who gives you all of the causes and explanations for your menopausal symptoms? Yes, you do! Read this. You can navigate the weight gain and other potential pitfalls of this period, with Dr. Haver's guidance. I'll be gifting it to my friends this holiday season.
I received a free copy of, The Galveston Diet, by Mary Claire Haver, MD, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book has everything you want to know about the Galveston Diet, including recipes. This diet is too restrictive for me, This is not just a diet plan but a lifestyle plan.
All diets work in the short term, most are not sustainable for life. This is yet another unrealistic way to lose weight that will likely lead to further disappointment. Also, it's keto. Stop trying to pretend or rebrand keto and IF. This is keto and IF with orthorexia woven in. Boooo.
This is a great resource for women 40 and over who are dealing with weight gain that is difficult to lose. Mary Claire Haver is not only a doctor, but a women who has also struggled with these same issues. She talks about how she began the Galveston Diet and why it can be so important for your health. She gives lots of information about what is going on with our bodies during this time and how we can use diet and exercise to stay healthy and strong. Meal plans are included along with lots of great recipes. Mary Claire Haver has helped me a lot and a highly recommend this book.
A helpful guide to improving women’s health with diet and intermittent fasting. There are some suggestions I may try to find a healthy balance.

I really enjoyed reading this and sped through it in just a couple of days. The title of the book might throw some people off, this is not one of those "fad diets" but rather a lifestyle of combining intermittent fasting with healthy eating. I'm a middle-aged woman and intermittent fasting is the only thing that has ever worked for me to lose weight after having two children, so to read about it again here and how it can impact menopause symptoms was quite meaningful to me. I appreciated that the book included the science behind how what we eat impacts our ability to function day to day. Yes I miss having high carb high sugar breakfasts (hello cinnamon toast crunch!) but I feel so much healthier now that I couldn't go back.
