I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of The Wife Next Door.
"Two houses. Two front doors. One family. And we’re going to make it work. Nothing can possibly go wrong…"
Wanted to read this novel as the plot line interested me; in a world of divorce and co-parenting would it really be possible to live next door to your ex and his/her new partner successfully.
For me, the characters really didn't resonate - can't say as I liked any of them but didn't dislike them either - just found them all rather meh. In many areas the story dragged and I skim read large portions. Sometimes the writing twists would indicate a certain character responsible for the harassment of Jess which kept you wondering. . .I found the ending anticlimactic.
If this had been a library book, I would have returned it without finishing. (I nearly always finish ARCs regardless of the writing quality).
Jess and Rob are separated but decide to move in next door to each other so that their son can go between them easily. With their new partners they are a big extended family. What could go wrong! When things start happening to Jess it becomes clear that someone isn't happy with the arrangement... A thrilling story full of twists. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.
Recently divorced and living next door to your ex with your new partner, what could possibly go wrong? Jess and Rob have decided being next door neighbors so their son Toby can go from one house to the other. What comes off as a somewhat united front of the four adults changes as the story progress and will have you questioning everything and everyone. Does Carol really have it out for Jess? Ruby really doesn't want her dad Ben to be with Jess, but is she behind all of the madness? Is Ben really upfront and honest as Jess thinks? Or is Jess just imagining all of this is really happening? I was literally questioning everyone! I finished this book in one sitting. I was on the edge of my seat from one chapter to the next. This was my read from Rona Halsall and I am excited for more of her books!
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for a copy in return for an honest review!
I have enjoyed this author’s previous books and this one didn’t disappoint.
The Wife Next Door by Rona Halsall is a cleverly written book, full of lies and deceit and plenty of twists and turns.
Rona creates characters that could easily be believable with situations that aren't too far fetched, yet the mystery of the environment she creates pulls you in page after page.
This was one of those books that had my full attention immediately, it was fast paced, things moved along quickly. I was totally wrapped up in the story and read it in two sittings.
It was a great read and full of surprises, the twists just kept coming and they were all well executed!
A great novel and I can't wait to read more from this wonderful author
“I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
Bookouture,
Thank You for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
I will post my review to my blog, platforms, BookBub, B&N, Kobo and Waterstone closer to pub date.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of The Wife Next Door. I loved the premise, but the ending was not a huge surprise. The characters were shallow and I never connected with any of them. If you like a book with a lot going on you will love this book, but it didn’t resonate with me.
Thank you Netgalley & Bookouture for an eARC of The Wife Next Door by Rona Halsall.
What’s it about?
An ex-husband and wife move in next door to each other…with their new significant others. What could possibly go wrong? The children can run between the homes, the fence has been knocked down between the two. But not everyone likes the idea of this big, blended family. First a terrifying note in the new home - followed by an accusation that could destroy lives. Who’s behind it? What are they after?
The premise of this book had me really interested. I read a lot of thrillers and haven’t come across one with this concept before. Because really, who would move in next door to their ex and his new partner? It was a twisty, quick read, but found it to be a bit predictable at times. At times I wanted to yell at the MC “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?”
3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for Goodreads & Netgalley.
A psychological thriller at its best a true page turner.A book that kept me reading late into the night. An author I will be following.#netgalley #bookouture
For a thriller I found this book rather dull and found myself speed reading just to keep my interest up, it’s nothing that hasn’t been written before
I read this book fairly quickly. The story had me hooked from the beginning--at first because I couldn't believe anyone would think up an arrangement like this where a married couple separates and then along with new partners buys adjoining houses and lives that close to each other but then things began to happen, and of course by then, I was in until the end. .
The escalation in traumatic events that Jess went through had me searching for clues as to who was trying to gaslight her. Perhaps I was a bit slow to the draw, but I did figure it out when I was about 75% in. By the end, the story was neatly wrapped up.
I give this book 4 stars.
Thank you to the publisher for granting me an ARC to read!
I sat down last night intending to read a few chapters of this book and no lie, I stayed up well past when I should have been asleep to finish reading it. This story was fast paced, kept you guessing until the end and I LOVED the ending! This was a wonderful thriller and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a book that sucks you in pretty much immediately and won’t let you go until the end!
I love Rona Halsall books so was very excited to read this one ahead of its publishing date.
Jess and Ben live next door to Rob and Carol. Jess and Ben used to be married and think it's the perfect solution for their young son, Toby. They seem to have had a good relationship but this all changes when they move house to be closer to one another.
Strange things start happening to Jess and you're not sure whether she's imagining it or someone is setting her up. Ben's teenage daughter Ruby and Carol are prime suspects which immediately makes you think it's not them.
Lots of twists and turns but did not have me on the edge of my seat like her other books have.
I did feel it was a little far-fetched at times but overall I did enjoy it.
Oh my goodness, what have I just read. This is a brilliant psychological thriller, I read in almost one sitting it was so tense that I couldn't stop reading.
Jess and Rob had such an amicable split that they decided to buy houses next door to each other for the ease of their little boy. But on moving day Jess sees a welcome card with a threatening note, the next morning it's disappeared but then the troubles start, putting a strain on the relationship with her partner Ben and Rob's partner Carol.
I've enjoyed a couple of Rona's books but I think this is my favourite.
I liked this, but for me it was very average. The plot was interesting, but it has all been done before and whilst it held my interest, it didn't bring anything new to the genre.
The book wasn't descriptive enough for my tastes. I felt that the characters were rather one dimensional and there was no real sense of place. The Isle of Man could have been a beautiful setting but in my opinion it wasn't really utilised.
On the plus side, the pacing of the story was good and whilst I had my suspicions about who was behind everything, I was never sure.
I would recommend this as a quick, fun read but it didn't set my world alight.
The premise of The Wife Next Door was so intriguing that my expectations were very high. What else should I expect from a plot that is both so simple and so primed for fictional disaster? Unfortunately, the execution wasn't there for me. The book is a simple version of a story that's been told many times before. There were so many opportunities to make it even twistier or more surprising, yet the ending was still somewhat basic.
Whenever a new book by this author comes out I can't wait to get stuck in and everything else gets out on hold. This book was no exception
I read it in almost one sitting. This had a clever and unique storyline and had me booked from the start and kept me guessing right up to the end. This author's books just keep getting better and better and am already counting down to the next one
This was a fun ride...a tale of blended families that decide to move in next door to each other. Everything seems perfect but strange things start to happen. Jess's life turns into a nightmare. Will she figure out who is doing this to her before its to late? This definitely had me guessing right to the very end.
My Review:
Loved!!!!! What a wonderful fast paced read this one was. I knew once I read the blurb I just had to pick this one up and find out more. I just had to know who would want to live next door to their ex husband along with his new flame and her current flame. What could go wrong with this picture as I’m laughing really hard right now. Trust me a lot went wrong with this arrangement. The characters were great together, the story line kept me hooked and the ending had left me shocked. What more can I ask for in a book? Kudos to Rona Halsall for such a good book and I can’t wait to read more by her.
In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A psychological thriller about whether or not a woman is losing her mind or is her ex husband’s fiancé out to get her. Jess thought that living next door to her ex husband would bring their families together but she was sadly mistaken. Blackmail, child abuse, kidnapping and attempted murder, happen within the year of their families trying to come together. Is her boyfriend’s teenage daughter trying to drive her mad or is it Carol, her ex husband’s new love interest. As the story unfolds, the game of cat and mouse becomes so deep that Jess doesn’t know whether or not she’s made it all up or if everyone is simply out to get her.
This is a great psychological thriller. I thought I had guessed it lots of times during the book, however the ending took me by surprise which is very rare.
Lots of twists, suspense and intrigue.
I’ve read lots of books by this author but this is definitely one of her best.
This book was sent to me by Netgalley for review. Thanks to the publisher for the electronic copy. Secrets and intrigue…family dynamics. Spouses and children…living close. Coparenting…the characters in this book are mysterious…which ones can be trusted? The concept of this novel is unique, written by a talented and gifted author. This is a cannot put down book with a plethora of red herrings. This would make a great television series. Don’t miss this book. I look forward to more from this author.
