Detective Harlow Durant is having a break when she is called back to deal with a cold case that has gone live. Skeletal remains have been found but then a fresh body is dumped on the site. Is there a connection between the old and new crimes?
Their Final Cry is the third book to feature Harlow Durant (I have previously reviewed the second book in the series The Girls in the Fire). She has serious issues centred around her serial killer father and there are flashback chapters showing her past.
The personal side to the main detectives' lives is crucial to the plot but also fascinating to read. Harlow and Lucas really come to life and have a great rapport with each other. They are both flawed and have vulnerabilities which meakes them easy to like and empathise with. We are more alligned with Harlow as the plot is deivered through her first person perspective.
The murder mystery is quite atmospheric with characters mentioning haunting voices in the woods. There is some forensic evidence but it is not particularly graphic. The descriptions of Harlow's father's killing were more visceral as they include her emotive reaction. I felt that the tension was maintained well through the book and the pace was quite rapid. However the plot strands are not wrapped up, leaving a huge cliffhanger and no sign of a sequel...
Their Final Cry is a dramatic and intense detective thriller.
This was a great addition to the series. I have reas the previous books and had high hopes for this. I found it a gripping read qnd it held my interest througout.
This is the 3rd book in the series and can easily be read as a standalone. I really like her writing style and will be reading her other books. It works at a fast pace and lots of cases in this one to keep you on your toes.
Dea Poirier’s Their Final Cry is a gritty, chilling and wholly engrossing crime thriller that will send many a shudder snaking down readers’ spines.
The tight-knit community of New Paltz in upstate New York is shocked to its core when the body of sixteen-year-old Mazie Winters is discovered on an abandoned farm. Detective Harlow Durant is called onto the scene to investigate, however, as she begins to shift through the evidence with her team, it becomes abundantly clear that this is going to be far from an open and shut case. Who could have wanted Mazie dead? As human remains are found in a cellar on Ackert Farm, Harlow wonders whether Mazie’s body was dumped there on purpose – or whether the killer is sending the police a message to leave well alone or more innocent lives will be lost…
As Harlow and her partner Lucas begin to look into the history of the farm, they are flabbergasted by the twisted and tangled past of the property. Is the farm cursed? Are the supposed cries of alarmed women which echo through the night real? Or a mere figment of everyone’s imagination? As more human remains are found, the case suddenly becomes personal when Lucas recognises a necklace found on one of the victim’s bodies. With time not on their side, will Harlow and Lucas manage to get to the bottom of this case? Can old ghosts be put to rest once and for all? Or will the killer go to desperate lengths to keep their identity a secret and strike again?
Dea Poirier’s Their Final Cry is one terrifying thriller that had me checking under the bed for monsters and ensuring that every single door and window in my house was bolted shut. Packed with heart-jolting twists and turns, this clever, tense and nail-biting chiller delivers on all counts and will have readers guessing and on edge wondering just what was going to happen next.
Serial killer thriller fans wanting a book that will scare them witless need look no further than Dea Poirier’s Their Final Cry.
I love this series more with each book. One of the highlights is finding out more about Harlow’s time with her father. I love cold cases, I find them fascinating because they are so much more difficult to solve. The pacing as always is great. I like that Lucas got some closure. I eagerly await the next book in the series.
I only realised after starting this that I had actually DNF’d the second book in this series. I definitely preferred this one but I might go back and give the start of the series another go. This book was a bit repetitive in places, especially about Harlow liking the rain but I soon got sucked in. I found Harlow more likable and her relationship with Lucas is really tested but I loved seeing Harlow grow and do her best to support him. I was kept guessing until the end and I didn’t want to put it down. I’m not normally a fan of a cliffhanger ending but I am intrigued enough that I will let it slide. I will definitely be reading the next addition.
I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Another great book from Dea Poirier!
After the ending of The Girls In The Fire I could not wait to find out more about Harlow and her crazy past! I absolutely loved the glimpses into her childhood and even though we had a new storyline in this book, I was hoping for more of them.
But, in true fashion, this author gave us another fantastic ending that will make me reach for a fourth book if the story continues. I though the writing style was really great and kept me super interested the whole time I was reading.
The plot in this book was an intricate web of people, places, and time, and I enjoyed reading all of it. There were connections I couldn't even have guessed. The characters had great development, and even though I knew quite a bit about Harlow I kept learning more.
There were definitely some nail biting moments of suspense, and surprises along the way.
I read the second book in this series before reading the first, and didn't have any problems jumping right in and following along, but I'd say you're better off reading at least the second book first and not going in blind.
I can't wait to see what Dea Poirier has in store for us next!
Their Final Cry by Dea Poirier is the third book in the Detective Harlow Durant series and WoW this was so good. This book was a great page turner from start to finish and had great twists and turns throughout that just had me gripped. Dea's books just get better and better and this latest book was another 5 star read.
I highly recommend this series. Wow just brilliant!
Absolutely love this author and this incredibly gripping series. And this book - wow! Thrilling from start to finish. I could not put up down. An absolutely brilliant read.
This is the first book I read in this series and won't surely be the last as it was a wild ride: gripping, twisty, and disturbing at times.
The mystery is well plotted and kept surprising me and guessing.
I loved the storytelling and the well developed characters.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'Their Final Cry' by Dea Poirier.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Dea Poirier, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 17th October 2022.
This is the second book I have read by this author. It is also the third book in the 'Detective Harlow Durant' series but can be read as a standalone. I have also read 'The Girls In The Fire' (book 2 in the series) which I loved and would definitely recommend!
I was originally drawn to this book by its stunning eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'A completely gripping and pulse-pounding crime thriller perfect for fans of Melinda Leigh, Kendra Elliot and Robert Dugoni.' I am a huge fan of Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a fan of Dea and if this book is half as good as' The Girls In The Fire'it is guaranteed to be a page turner!! I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of 33 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in New York, USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in a mix of third and first person perspective and the protagonists are Detective Harlow Durant and an unsub. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything. To have the benefit of both first and third person perspective ensures you don't miss out on anything.
'Their Final Cry' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Dea discusses/includes
WOW!!! WHAT AN ABSOLUTELY GRIPPING PAGE TURNER WITH AN EXPLOSIVE ENDING!!
This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that really set the scene and put you in the picture leaving you feel the heat of the fires on your skin. The cover and the title suit the book perfectly.
The storyline is realistic and I was completely invested throughout. I absolutely loved reading this book in the series and I'm looking forward to going back to read book one along with any future books in this fantastic series. It is filled with murder, secrets, lies, mystery, tension, suspense and red herrings galore, especially one in particular! I was completely hooked and could not put it down even at 3am!!! The atmosphere was perfect and I was kept on the edge of my seat. It took me ages to work out the killer which is an accomplishment as it is getting harder and harder to surprise me with the amount of crime books I've read so a huge well done to Dea. There is so much going on, not too much to confuse you but the perfect amount to keep the suspense going from page one until the end.
I hope your busy writing the next book Dea as I, for one, cannot wait to find out what happens next!!
It is set over/includes multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.
Although this is the third book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
The characters are all strong, well developed and realistic. I really enjoyed getting to know the team in this book. I absolutely love Harlow who is a strong female lead. I always enjoy meeting strong women in books being female myself. I like the fact that she is full of sarcasm, kick butt but also shows a side that is vulnerable. Harlow has history that has affected her and it is nice to see someone who isn't constantly soldering on but is struggling with their past and getting through it. I enjoyed seeing her relationship with her partner Lucas grow and develop throughout the book. Lucas made me laugh on several occasions with his sarcasm but you can also see that he cares greatly for Harlow and worried about her. They both make a great team and I'm looking forward to meeting them again in the next book. Harlow's parents are horrific and I'm not surprised how they treated her has affected her so much I also really clicked with Dr Pagan and Racquel and am looking forward to meeting them again along with Sergeant Dirby. Although we didn't see much of Sergeant Dirby from how . A fantastic set of characters who I am looking forward to getting to know more!
Clear your schedules before starting this book as it is a true page turner!!
Congratulations Dea on yet an absolutely fantastic page turning success. This is exactly why you are in my favourite author club!! I cannot wait to read more of your previous and future books!!
Overall an absolutely action packed psychological thriller with an explosive ending that will keep you turning the pages until you've finished.
Genres covered in this book include Thriller, Women's Detective Fiction, Noir Crime, Serial Killers, Mystery, Police Procedural, Psychological Thriller, Suspense. and Psychological Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Melinda Leigh, Kendra Elliot, Robert Dugoni, PJ Tracy, Carol Wyer and anyone who loves a page turning psychological thriller.
282 pages.

A great addition to the Detective Harlow Durant series. Can't wait for book 4 and more!!!
Thank you #netgalley and #bookouture for the eARC.
Harlow is back in this exciting book 3 in the series. Harlow is once again on the search for a serial killer while trying to help Lucas find out what happened to his mother , grandmother and sister. Are these missing women all being murdered from the same killer ? So many twists in this very captivated thriller! Love this series and definitely would recommend reading this series!
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review!
This is Book 3 in the Detective Harlow Durant Series. I fell in love with this series after reading the first book, Find Me in the Dark. Their Final Cry explores a determined serial killer who may have been around for decades, Detective Harlow Durant’s memories popping up of her own past childhood of living with her father who is known as the “Seattle Sleeper,” and dealing with her partner Lucas’s own quest to solve his mother and grandmother’s disappearance.
Dea Poirier’s writing was excellent as always! I devoured this book just like I did the last two in this series!
Their Final Cry can be read as a stand-alone, but I HIGHLY suggest reading the first two books in the series: Find Me in the Dark and The Girls in the Fire.
A suspenseful, dark and intriguing plot is what you will get reading Their Final Cry. As the cases start to stack up, Harlow and Lucas have their work cut out for them piecing together the past to the present. Because….how can they be connected after all these years?????
Harlow and Lucas both have their own personal demons they are trying to come to terms with. It will certainly test their relationship.
Their Final Cry is a gripping and unputdownable read that I could not stop reading.
A fast paced series I highly recommend.
You are left with a cliffhanger which makes me want the next book in the series to come now!
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and author, Dea Poirier, for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Harlow Durant is taking some much-needed time for herself. But when she gets a call that her partner, Lucas Park, needs her, she heads back to New York, to the small upstate town of New Paltz, where Mazie Winters has been murdered and her body deposited on a seemingly unrelated crime scene. But as Harlow and Lucas begin to dig into Mazie’s murder, they start to question whether her death and the cold case Lucas has been working on are related after all. Their investigation opens old wounds for Lucas, whose mother disappeared years earlier and who was never found.
I liked The Girls in the Fire, second in this series. Their Final Cry is even better! The story unfolds mostly through Harlow’s eyes, going between present day and her childhood nineteen years earlier. We see more of what she went through growing up that informs her current mindset and attitudes. We also learn a bit about Lucas’s earlier experiences.
When the case dredges up old hurts for Lucas, Harlow has a choice. Does she shut down, or does she find a way to support the best partner she’s ever had? The struggle is real, and Harlow and Lucas’s relationship is tested.
The threat of a potential cop killer carries over from The Girls in the Fire. Is a serial killer targeting cops, and is Harlow next on his list? Or Lucas? And what’s the story with the journalist who tracks Harlow down and demands that she talk to him for the book he’s allegedly writing about her parents?
Tension is high on all fronts, and Poirier pulled me along with the story. This is a compelling read that’s hard to put down once you get started, and the ending left me hungry for the fourth in the series. I recommend Their Final Cry and the Harlow Durant series for anyone who enjoys a good thriller and likes staying up past their bedtime to see what happens next.
Book 3 in the Harlow Duran series.
Like the previous books in the series this follows the pattern of a current case interspersed with flashbacks from Harlow's past.
When a young girl's body is found dumped in front of an abandoned farmhouse Harlow and Lucas must decide if it's linked to a cold case they've been investigating. But how could it when the crimes happened decades apart.
This is another great page turner that kept me enthralled til that shocking ending. I cannot wait for the next one.
Their Final Cry is the third book in the Detective Harlow Durant series. Like the previous books it deals with some pretty nasty crimes and it also reveals more of Harlow's turbulent childhood with her evil father and abusive mother. This time we also get a glimpse into the past of Harlow's partner, Lucas. The mystery surrounding his mother and grandmother's disappearance being thrown up.
I really enjoyed this latest instalment. There are a few things that I think you have to suspend belief with. I'm not sure that someone with a past such as Harlow's would be able to investigate crimes such as these, even if she were legally allowed, from a mental health point of view, it's far from ideal. Then there's Lucas' involvement in the current investigation, I'm sure that there's no way that he could possibly be involved and I think that with his closeness to Harlow, even that would be unlikely. It doesn't matter though, as their part in all of this is what really drives the story, both in this book and the overall story that we keep being given glimpses of.
I'm sure that there's more to come for Harlow, we certainly have plenty of questions about her story and it's clear that her father has still got a role to play. I'm looking forward to seeing how all of that unfolds.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and given voluntarily
Rounded up from 4.5
This is the third in the Detective Harlow Durant series but can easily be read as a standalone.
After a long break, Harlow is called back by her boss to investigate the murder of a teenage girl in the same place skeletal remains are found. Yet more bodies come to light, this time Harlow's partner Lucas recognises the necklace one of the bodies is wearing. Could he finally get the answers he's been looking for about his mother's disappearance?
Another teenage girl goes missing, and it's a race against time to find the killer before they strike again.
I think this series is getting better and better!
Their Final Cry was packed with murder, mystery, twists and turns with plenty of high stakes for the detectives to deal with.
I still love the character of Harlow. She's smart, brave, yet still has a bit of a tough time letting go of her lone wolf tendencies. It's a shame that matter how much she tries, she can't quite put her past behind her, especially as nobody will let her forget she's the daughter of a notorious serial killer.
Her partner Lucas gets more of a starring role in this story and my heart honestly broke for him over his mother and grandmother's disappearance.
I don't want to say too much more in case I give away any spoilers, but I'm honestly still reeling from the ending of this book. I can't wait to see what the author will follow this up with!
If you're looking for a well written, well plotted crime thriller, I would highly recommend Their Final Cry to you.
Detective Harlow Durant and her partner Lucas Park are going to be working on different cases, but somehow they eventually just might connect. For Harlow, the body of 16-year-old Mazie Winters has been discovered, and it doesn’t take long before even more bodies are found. For Lucas, he is working on a case involving bodies that were found in a cellar, a case that had turned cold years ago.
Since the bodies were found at an abandoned farm, Harlow tries to find the farms’s owners. One thing she finds almost immediately is that the farm had more than one owner, and this was in rapid succession. More than that, there have been rumors that something had been going on at that farm, and now Harlow is determined to find answers.
This case reaches deep for both Harlow and Lucas. Harlow cannot help but remember her disturbing past and Lucas also is reminded of a great loss that he has never found closure for. Both Harlow and Lucas work vigorously to put the pieces of these difficult cases together, and time appears to be running out.
This excellent third book in the Detective Harlow Durant series is both mysterious and fast-paced. As Harlow’s past disturbs her more and more as the series progresses, we just get to know more about what she experienced as a child. This book also gives insight into Lucas’s tragic past as well. Even so, this book would work well as a standalone and is one that should not be missed. Dea Poirier has whet my appetite for the fourth book in the series, especially after the intriguing cliffhanger ending.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
