A very successful retelling of three traditional stories from southern Asia. Mouse deer – a critter the introduction semi-handily tells us is neither mouse nor deer – is adamant he will not be caught by the tiger, and is proof enough at that. Neither will he fall foul of the crocodile in the local river – but when it comes to raiding the vegetable garden of a human farmer, has he possibly met his match? Aesopian simplicity, very pleasant artwork and a timeless approach to the stories' presentation all make this a volume worthy of strong consideration. Four and a half stars.
The Adventures of Mouse Deer was a delight! Mouse Deer is a smart little deer that uses his wits to protect himself from all the dangers of the country. Kids will laugh their way through these stories.
Mouse Deer is my hero. This book is absolutely gorgeous. I love seeing folktales from around the world. This little guy from Southeast Asia is such a delight
I loved this book . The illustrations were colorful and beautiful and the stories were well written and the morals easy to understand. Great book to teach children .
These folk tales feature Mouse Deer, a trickster along the lines of Kokopelli or Coyote. In three tales, Mouse Deer uses his smarts to outwit all sorts of animals in the jungle and lives to tease another day. This would be a great book to use as a comparison to other folk tales, trickster stories, or just to add some world diversity to your collection. The intro page tells us that these stories are from Indonesia and Malaysia. The Mouse Deer is a real creature, and is so insanely adorable that you could believe that it was invented just for a children’s story. The illustrations are vibrant and engaging.
